There is an empty chair at the scoring table of the State High School Class A Boys Basketball Tourna ment this year. It belongs to Gareth Giles, a former Superintendent of Schools at South Bend whose an nual visits to the state championships in Tacoma typified those of thousands a r o u n d t h e s t a t e of Washington. Gary served the WIAA, even after his retirement, in supervising the A tournament each year. As a former coach, school administrator and WIAA president, he was a master in arriving at the appropriate decision. Gary's number one concern always rested with the students and the athletes. His friendliness and ge nuine love affair with the tournament cast its in fluence throughout the crowds, the officials, the games, the fans. It almost seemed like it was Gary Giles' tourna ment. The press sensed it, tournament officials look ed to him for direction and leadership, the players and coaches personified his attitude and obvious ap preciation of being a part of the state finals. Gary Giles personified the specialness that belong ed to the A tournament. To him the event was much more than an athletic showcase. It was a gathering of friends from every corner of the state, friends who had something in common, friends who shared in the thrills and agony of cheering for their home town heros, friends who cherished seeing each other again, friends who shared in memories of yesteryear and the promises of tomorrow. There will be an empty chair at the scoring table of the boys tournament this year, exactly where Gary Giles would be sitting had he not passed away in September. There is no doubt in the minds of tournament "regulars" that Gary will be there in spirit throughout the championships, loving every minute of every game.

Two-For-One Tournament All over America basketball fans will be watching this year's state A tournament at the Tacoma Dome. The scrutiny comes about because of a WIAA decision to play two games, boys and girls, at the same time under one roof. It just happens to be the world's largest wood-beamed span of its kind. There will be no penalty for "double dribble" in this tour nament with 52 games scheduled in a four-day, double elimination setting. There will be 32 teams in all, 16 girls and 16 boys. Six schools have both boys and girls entered in the com petition and those fans following both will walk only 80 feet from one court to another. You are sitting in on history. The attempt may go down as one of the most innovative tournaments ever, or ... let's not even think about it! There will be plenty of curiosity about simultaneous games being played and the most avid of fans actually will be able to find a seat in the Tacoma Dome to watch two games at once. One thing is certain. The biggest crowds in A tournament history can be accomodated here in the Tacoma Dome. Yes, you'll see it all. At the very special admission rate of "two for one."
