About USA Boxing U

SA Boxing is the Na tional Governing Body (NGB) for amateur boxing in the Unites States. The orga nization is responsible for the administration, development and promotion of the sport throughout the country. USA Boxing is given this authority by the Amateur Sports Act passed in 1978 (now known as the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act). The law was created to incorporate the USOC and aims "to promote and coordinate amateur athletic activ ity in the United States, to recognize certain rights for United States amateur athletes, to provide for the resolu tion of disputes involving national governing body for amateur boxing in 1980. Activities are administered at the local level by 56 Local Boxing Committees (LBCs). USA Boxing is represented in every region of the United States. In addition to the local Boxing Committees, USA Boxing has five group member organizations: the Golden Gloves, the Silver Gloves, the Police Athletic League, the National Colle giate Boxing Association and the Native American Sports Council. For up-to-date information on USA Boxing, check out the organization's website at www.usaboxing.org. The website includes event results, rankings, athlete biogra phies, membership applications and contact information for LBCs, a calendar of events as well as news on ama teur boxing.

Historv

Since its inception as an organized sport in 1888, Olympic-style or amateur boxing has enjoyed a rich tra dition of excellence in the United States. The sport has provided competitive opportunities for thousands of young men and now young women. When Olympic-style boxing was organized as one of the first sports in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the sport's popularity was mainly limited to the United States. In the early years, amateur boxing's rules were based primarily on the rules of professional boxing at the turn of the cen tury. Since then, the popularity of Olympic-style boxing has spread worldwide and the sport has developed its own identity and rules independent of professional box ing. In 1946, the International Amateur Boxing Associa tion (AIBA), was formed, creating an international gov erning body for amateur boxing. Throughout the devel opment process, the U.S. has been a world leader in the creating competitive opportunities, enhancing the sport's image and making boxing safer for all participants. Since the sport's Olympic inclusion in 1904, U.S. box ers have won 106 medals: 4 7 gold, 23 silver and 36 bronze.
