Historv
Since its inception as an organized sport in 1888, Olympic-style or amateur boxing has enjoyed a rich tra dition of excellence in the United States. The sport has provided competitive opportunities for thousands of young men and now young women. When Olympic-style boxing was organized as one of the first sports in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the sport's popularity was mainly limited to the United States. In the early years, amateur boxing's rules were based primarily on the rules of professional boxing at the turn of the cen tury. Since then, the popularity of Olympic-style boxing has spread worldwide and the sport has developed its own identity and rules independent of professional box ing. In 1946, the International Amateur Boxing Associa tion (AIBA), was formed, creating an international gov erning body for amateur boxing. Throughout the devel opment process, the U.S. has been a world leader in the creating competitive opportunities, enhancing the sport's image and making boxing safer for all participants. Since the sport's Olympic inclusion in 1904, U.S. box ers have won 106 medals: 4 7 gold, 23 silver and 36 bronze.
