Irish Pat McMurtry recalls early Gloves
By ST AN FARBER Tacoma's Irish Pat McMurtry won a championship robe at the Tacoma Athletic Commission's first Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament in 1949. . . "There were 70 fighters entered m eight weight classifications," recalled McMurtr, who turned age 62 Jan. 5, "and I had to wm four fights, three by decision, to win the 160pound championship." Now, fighters aren't permitted to fight more than once a day. The Tacoma Golden Gloves took root when McMurtry's trainer, Homer Amundsen, met with Al Whitman, then president of Washington National Bank, and Ray Kelly over 1unch one day. "Portland and Seattle have successful Golden Gloves tournaments," Amundsen said. "Why not Tacoma?" A few months later, punches were exchanged f ar into the night in the . Thursday-Friday tournament at the Jam packed Tacoma National Guard Armory. . ,, "We began at 8 o'clock both nights, McMurtry recalled. "Thursday, we finished about 1 a.m. and Friday, after midnight. "It was getting pretty late. Al Whitman stepped into the ring and asked the crowd if they wanted to continue, or if they wanted to come back and finish the next day." The fans voiced their opinion loud and clear: they wanted the fights to continue that night. "They had cots in the armory so guys culd get some rest between bouts," McMurtry said. McMurtry didn't make the 1950 tournament - he was enrolled as a freshman boxer at Spokane's Gonzaga University. He transferred to the College of Puget Sound to join the Loggers' boxing team and won the 1951 Tacoma 175-pound title Pat thought he would win the 1951 Golden Boy award. "I remember being in the locker room before the champions entered the ring at the end. One of the organizers came over to me and told me I'd won the Golden Boy award. When we got into the ring, however, they _ gave it to Pete Rademacher, a heavyweight from Yakima. "Afterward, I asked the TAC guy what happned. He shrugged his sholders and said, 'l,It wouldn't look good to give it to a Tacoma boy. Being Golden Boy meant a lot to me. I'11 never forget that." McMurtry said he told the Tacoma officials he would go on to Seattle and win the Golden Boy award.
Pat McMurtry "It was a bigger tournament (Seattle)," McMurtry said. He lived up to his promise. Today, there is no Seattle Golden Gloves tournament. McMurtry and Rademacher weren't pals at the Golden Gloves tournament, because Rademacher beat Pat's brother, Mike. But they later became good friends and roomd together at the national tournament m Boston. Soon afterward the 1951 Tacoma and Seattle Golden Gloves, he was a fighting Marine in Korea and went on to win the All-Marine title. A broken hand cut short his bid to win the All-Service championship As a professional fighter, McMurtry rose to No. 5 in the world among heavyweights and, after retiring as an active pugilist in 1959, he became a top-flight referee, working six world title fights, two in Australia. "Tacoma always has had good boxers," said McMurtry. Mike McMurtry, never won a Tacoma Golden Gloves trophy (although he won others elsewhere), was intercollegiate boxing champion at Idaho State. Looking back at early Tacoma Go!den Gloves, Irish Pat noted that the program hsted admission prices at $1. 85 ringside, $1.50 reserve seats, $1.25 general admission and 75 cents for students. He also noted that there were 16 welterweights entered in the 1951 tournament. He recalled that Canada usually produced good team entries. And he noted that more stringent eligibility rules prevented him, as a college freshman, from having a shot at the 1952 U.S. Olympic boxing team. Looking ahead, McMurtry said he may get involved in judging professional boxing cards. Whatever, boxing has been good to Irish Pat McMurtry - and Irish Pat McMurtry has been good for boxing.
