From the Itemization (Page 3), it can be seen that Yakima Softball Association has been a most active organi zation on the Yakima sports scene, continually striving to improve its product - low-cost recreation for the players and low-cost entertainment for spectators. This has been accomplished by a continuous publicity effort, the addi tion of awards for individual accomplishment, sponsorship of an annual invitational tournament and of important championship events, and by a systematic program of phy3ical improvements to the Larson Park softball plant In cooperation with the Metropolitan Park District of Yakima. Naturally, in any operation, financial considerations hav, e an important bearing on success. In league play, team sponsors pay all costs through the entry fees, which cover game officials, balls used, field supplies, lights and ad ministrative costs which include trophies, printing of schedules and team registrations. In tournaments, the entry fees provide only about half the funds needed to cover expenses, arid therefore we ask spectators for doriations oc casionaliy during tournaments to meet those costs. The improvement of Larson Park comes under a different income category. Five years ago we begari to assess each player a fee for membership in the YSA with the explicit purpose of providmg funds for making the No. 1 field a better place to play. The outfield fence was the first project; it cost over $600 for materials and YSA members pro vided all the labor to construct IL A portable consession bJoth was next used to supplement the income during tour naments, and its profits were added to the membership fees so that, after sponsoring several tournaments, we were able to construct the large backstop which now graces the field. Its cost was almost $1300, part of which was provi ded by the Park District. The next Item on our Improvement agenda for Larson Park was to be completion of the enclosure of the No, l playing field with chain-link fencing. However the condition of our portable concession booth made It mandatory that this be deferred temporarilt, and the Board of Directors voted In January to give first priority to a permanent con• (Continued an pag-e 7)

Marv has, regrettably for the YSA, now moved to Bellingham; his Impact on the Association was much greater than t,is short tenure on the board would indicate, and his energy was an Inspiration to all who worked with him on the project. In order to avoid financing charges for the payment of the concession unit, the board, acting under authority of the membership, voted lo advance 1963 team entry fees, adding them to a $1000 carryover from 1962 and to the 1963 player memberships, to pay cash for the construction.
