1990 OUTLOOK AND KEY MATCHUPS Pavel Bure ol lhe Soviel Union, Mats Sundin ol Sweden and Jaromlr Jagr ol Czechoslovakia are slill teenagers. yel lheir names are already household words in international hoci<ey circles. Nalionat Hoci<ey League general managers hope to sign the aforementioned trlumvlraIe as soon as possible, while their National Team coaches are Intern upon holding on 10 them al leasl through the 1992 Olympics In Albertville, France. Over lhe pasl two years, all three have been stalwarts of their teams at the World Junior Hockey Championships. All lhree got their nrst taste ol international hockey at its highesl level last spring al the World Hockey Championship In Bern, Swllzerland. Those three budding hockey superstars represe nl very well what the ice hockey cornpelilion at the 1990 Goodwill Games Is all abOul. This competllfon wlll leature the top naHonal teams and veteran players in international hockey, while also spotlighting a number ol athletes who certainty wTII play very pivotal roles al the 1992 Wlnter Games. The Goodwill Games will give nallonal team coaches the opportunlly to evaluate !heir talem while racing the very best competition in lhe world II ls important lo note lhal no athlete who played any portion ol any game In lhe Nallonal Hockey League during lhe1989·90 season will compele in Washington. CANADA Team Canada Is coached by Dave King, lhe head coach of Canada's full-lime, nalio11al•team program. While his Bern team was augmented by NHL stars like Steve Vzerman, who led lhe Wor1d Tournament In scoring and was named ils Best Forward, and Paul Colley, who was named 10 the Sec• ond All-Star learn, lhis team lor the Goodwill Games will not Include current NHL players. Canada will augment its current National Team roster wllh minor league players, jusl like lhe USA The players on King's currenl roSler, however, all have much lnternallonal hockey experience. This Canadian learn will be much dillerenl from Ihe one which swepl unbeaten throu_gh the prellmlnary round at Bern bul garnered no points in lhe medal round. The Canadians conducled a preparation camp July 18•24 In Calgary The camp featured 21 players 12 forwards, two goalkeepers and seven defensernen. The Canadians and Americans face a similar challenge of having to mold their te.ams while under lhe lire of compelilion

CZECHOSLOVAKIA Al feast two-thirds of the "Kid Line· lhal terrorized opponents In Bern wlll be intact tor the Goodwill compelilion, according to the preliminary roster provided by the Czech lederation. Jaromir Jagr. 18, will join Roben Relct,el, 19, as top otfensive lhreals In Washington. Reichel, who was rourth 1n scoring al Bern with 5 goals and 6 assists, was named to the lournamenl's Flrsl All-Star team. The Calgary Flames would like lo see him join former llnemate Robert Hollk In an NHL uniform. Holil< signed afler lhe World Tournameni to play wilh the Hartford Whalers, and Reichel has signed wllh Calgary. Ja_gr was lhe llflh player draJted In ihe 1990 NHL Entry Drall last month at Vancouver. He was chosen by ihe Pittsburgh Pengulns, whose new head coach Is Bob Johnson, lormer execullve director lor USA Hockey Goalkeeper Dominik Hasek, who was lhe Flrst-,eam All-Star al his posilion In Bern, will not join head coach Stanlslav Nevesely for lhe Goodwill Games. Hasek will play the 1990-91 season wilh lhe Chl• cago Black Hawks. Pelr Brlza, who has been on the Czeclh National Team roster for both the 1988 Olympics and 1989 World Tournamen1, will be lhe No. 1 goalkeeper. Amazingly, he did not play a single minule at ei• ther of the above compelilions. The 25-year-old veteran will be a key factor tor lhe Czechs. Vereran center Oto Hascak, who had a disappointing World Tournamenl wllh only 2 goals and 2 assists, ls lhe tone holdover from the exerienced Hascak, Robert Kron and Zdenko Cigar line. Young delenseman Jiri Slegr, an all•star at last winter's World Junior Toumamenl. could make a splash In Washington. Nevesely served as an assistant coach to Pavel Wohl at the World Tournament, where the Czechs linlshed lhlrd.

7

FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY The Germans played without long-time natf:onal coach Xavier Unslnn during the World Toumamem at Bern aNer he was sent home dUring lhe event due to Illness. Erich Kuhnhaci<i, who relieved Unsinn, ls lhe head coach of the GoodwiU Games learn. Unsinn·s troubles stemmed mainly from lhe, fact lhat West Germany was in danger of finishing eighth al lhe World Tournamenl and thus dropping to the B Pool lor 1991 world competttion. Coached by Kuhnhadd, lhe Germans deleated challenger Norway, 4·0 In their final game of the tournament, to place sev enth and retain their standing amongsl the top eight nal'lons for 1991. Klaus Meri<, who compiled a 5.58 goals-against average as lhe baokup goalkeeper al Bern, will be the fronl-llne neImlnder In Washington. Defenseman Udlo Kfessllng, who had 2 goals and 1 assf!il aI Bern, rs the leading reJumlng scorer from lhe 1990 World Toumamem. He is a veleran inlemational performer. Oespile lhe fact I hat they are bringing a relatively young squad lo the Goodwill Games, the Germans can1 be counted out. This is the nation that knocked lhe Americans oul of Ihe medal round at the 1988 Winter Olympics with a 4-1 upset victory.

FINLAND

Hocl<ey is certainly the No. 1 team sport In Finland, and In recent years the Finns have enjoyed success at Iha iniemational tel/el, winning the sliver medal at the Calgary Winter Olympics and de feating the Soviets in the process. The Finns, coached by PenIt1 Mallkainen, were sixth at Bern. Malikainen will roach this Goodwill Games squad, as well. Ii should be noted that the 1991 World Chafll)lonship TournamenJ will be conducted at Tur1<u and Helsinki, Finland. like the Soviet Union, Finland Is secure In goal. Sakarl Lindfors played in seven games at Bem, complllng a 2.38 goals-against average. He served as a backup on the 1988 Olympic squad. Veterans Karl Jalonen, 30, and Arto Ruotanen, 29, will stabilize lhe Finnish squad at forward and delense, respectively, Talented center Esa Keskinen, a lour-year National Team veteran, had 4 assls1s at Bem, while Paull Jarvinen Is the leading returning scorer from the World Tournament wllh 4 goals and 1 assist. Simo Saarinen and Ruotanen are the team's lop duo on defense. Saarinen, a 1982 New Yor1t Rangers draft choice, had hls career all but end on Nov. 11, 1984, when he colllded wilh a goal post In a Rangers game vs. the Los Angeles Klngs. and damaged his knee so badly thaJ he was our for the remainder of the 1984-85 campaign and the whole next season. 11 was his eighth and last NHL game, bUl he has re turned to be a regular member of the Ftnnlsh National Team. A player to waleh Is 20-year-old rlghl winger 1eemu Selanne, the first-round dralt choice of the Wlnnlpeg Jets in 1988 (10Ih overall), who had t,1s 1989-90 season cul short when he suffered a broken leg In the 11 lh game of Jhe Finnish EJlre League season.

8

SOVIET UNION The Soviel Union won s record 22nd world championship al Bern last May. Belore the tournameni it was thought lhal perhaps the Soviel National Team would be severty challenged for lhe gold medal. A number of Head Coach Viktor TikhonoV's veteran stars, like defenseman Viaoheslav Fetisov and winger Sergei Makarov, played las1 season in the National Hockey League. For once, it was though!, the So viets would be adding seled players when they became available from the NHL clubs - and at the last min ute. Perhaps the Big Red Machine would not be as well oiled as usual. Alas. the Soviets were never really challenged at Bern. In lhe medal-round games against top threats Sweden, Canada and Czechoslovakia, the Soviets outscored their opponents 15-1. The USSR fin ished In third place In the preliminary round with a record ol 5-1-1. •1 don't lhlnk there was any doubt the rest of us were playing lor silver," said Sweden's Hakan Loob. Soviet goalkeeper Artur lrbe, a 23-year-old Latvian, was named the toumanmenl's best al his posftion. He yielded 13 goals in 1O games. In a short-duration tournament llke lhe Goodwill Games. a hol goalkeeper like lrbe could be lhe dlllerenoe for Tikhonov's squad. Delenseman Mikhail Tatarinov contributed 3 goals and 8 assists al Bern and was named lhe outstanding Oerenseman. He joined Felisov, who will not play In lhe Goodwill Games, as a Firsl-Team de• lenseman. Andrei Khomutov, who was second to Canada's. Steve Yzerman In tournament scoring with 11 goals and 5 assists, also will not be a member of lhe Soviet ¢earn. He and veteran llnemate Vyacheslav Bykov are linlshlng their careers In Swilzerland and are be1ng replaced here by younger players. How much lhose young players conlnbule, while replacing veterans like Byk.ov, Khomu1ov and Fellsov, will be a key lor lhe Soviets. Pavel Bure and highly-touted winger Valeri Kamensky, bolh Second-Team All-Stars al Bern, will be forced lo take up much of the slack. Sergei Fedorov, Dmilrl Khrislich and Alexei Zt,amnov are young lorwards who could step to the lorelronl at lhe Goodwill Games. SWEDEN The Swedes have one ol lhe strongest programs for developing young players in lhe world, and II will apparenlly be 1ested In Washington. To begin wllh, the Swedish preliminary roster does no! Include any of lhe three goalkeepers who played al Bern. The Swedes also will be wllhoul lhelr top lhree scorers from Bern, Kenl NIisson and Ha kan Loob, both ex-NHLers, and ve1eran lnternallonal star Thomas Rundkvist. NIisson and defenseman And· ers Eldebrink, another intemallonal veleran, were Second-Team AII-Slars al lhe World Tournament. Eldebrink will nol play at the Goodwill Games. eilher. All ol lhis means lhal young stars like Mais Sundin and Johan Garpenlov will have to assume greater roles. Garpenlov had 4 goals and 4 assists in his World Championship debut al Bern. Sundin was the lirsl European ever to be drafted No. , overall by ihe NHL when the Quebec Nordiques selected him In 1989. Robert BUrakowsl<y, who was U,e Swedish Ellie League's scoring champion last season, was one of lhe llnal players cut lrom lhe nalional team lasl spring, and he may have somelhlng lo prove lo Head Coach Conny Evensson. Head Coach Tommy Sandlln dlrecled to Swedes lo second place al Bern. Sweden actually ended up with Iha silver by goal dillerenllal - they linished minus-1 In lhe medal round, compared 10 Czechoslova kia's mlnus-4. Evensson Is a veteran international mentor,

SWITZERLAND The Swiss, who placed eighlh at Calgary, will return 10 the A Pool !or the 1991 World Tournament after having won the 1990 World B Pool competition. Switzerland did qulle well at lhe 1988 Olympics. deleatlng Finland and coming close lo upseIs ol Canada and Sweden. Compared with other European c:ounlrles, l'he salaries tor top hockey players are highest In Switzel1and, and crowds at games lhe biggest. Yet on lhe lntemalional level, lhe Swiss haven't been a lac, lor for two decades. Their Eme League has prodtJoed some oulslanding players, but never enough to make lhe Swiss competitive with nations l1ke Sweden or Czechoslovakia. Among those exciting players are center Thomas Vrabec, who Is the team's top scoring threat, fleet winger Felix Hollensteln and goalkeeper Renato Toslo, who has a knack for making the easy saves look difflcult. Switzerland Is coached by Hans Lindberg, former coach of the Swedish National Team. UNITED STATES The United Siates is coached by Universily ol Wisconsin head man Jett Sauer, who led !he Badgers to the 1990 NCAA DMslon I championship - his second al Wisconsin. Sauer is asslsled by Sieve Cedorchuk ol Boston College, who has World Junior experience at lhe USA helm, and Ron Wilson, ct lhe Milwaukee Admirals of the lnlernatlonal League, who has a vasl array or intemallonal hockey experienc es. The U.S. conlingem ls made up ol top college players and professional hockey prospects currently playing in the minor leagues. Team USA was selecled at a lrainlng/selecllon camp that began July 15 In Colorado Springs, CO. The camp eo.cted July 20 when the U.S. departed for Oakland and an exhibition contest July 21 vs. lhe Soviet Union. The two teams mel again the following nlghl In Portland, OR. The key !or Team USA, as ii always Is In lntema1lonal c:ompelilion, will be how soon the team can come together as a unit. Coached by Tim Taylor, the Americans won lheir llnal six games at Bern to fin ish an encouraging flllh, That team had a similar makeup to this one, and did not have much time to prepare. Sauer Is a veteran of the lntematk>nal wars, having served as an assistant coach to Olympic mentor Dave Pe terson on lhe 1985, '86 and '87 Nallonai Teams. Many of the players, lie 1988 Olympians Gu,y Gosselin and Jim Johannson, have many years ol lnternallonal compelilion under their belts.

TEAMS Canada The Goodwill Games will provide Team Canada General Manager and Head Coach, Dave King, wtth a great opponunlly lo evaluale prime candidates for lhe 1992 Winier Olympic Games in Albertville, France. Canada's National Team will be comprised of young players who are on 1he verge ol playing in lhe NHL The goallendlng posilion will fealure Warren Sharples, who was a s1and oul al lhe University of Michigan last season. On defense, promising youngsters Jason Haner, Greg Andrusak and Ken MacArthur. will be support ed by Nalional Team veteran, Brad Schlegel. The offense will be anchored around NCAA All-S1ars Pal Murray (Michigan Slate Univershy), Joe Juneau (RPI), Kenl Manderville (Cornell) and Russ Romanluk (Univerisly of North Dakola). A GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING ICE HOCKEY Background: Few sports offer the spectator more quick-paced excitement than lee hockey. Much ol lhe game's appeal has to do with the speed at which actions occur on lhe Ice. Players generate velocities up to 30 mph, and the puck (a disc of vulcanized rubber lhree Inches In diameter, an Inch thick and weighing six ounces) moves almost three tlmes lhal fast. Because of Its speed, Ice hockey somellmes baffles the novice spectator, but vlewing lhe game Is simple If one follows the action surrounding the puck. The dimensions or the rink vary from 185-200 feet tong and 85 feet wide. The International rink Is 2oox1 oo_ The rink is divided Into zones by two blue fines and a cemer red line. The portion of the Ice In which the goal Is situated is called lhe defending zone of the earn defending that goal, and the at tacking zone of its opponent. The central zone, between the blue lines, is called the neulral zone. and the ponlon ol lhe Ice farthest from the defended zone is the attacking zone. Each team consists ol 22 players (20 sl<alers and 2 goalkeepers for lhe Goodwill Games, wllh a third goalkeeper In reserve), six of whom - three forwards (a cenler and two wings), two delensemen and a goalkeeper - may be on the ice at the same time. Because of lhe high fatigue factor, lhe lhree for wards, collectively called a line, are subs111uled for ffrequently; generally In 60· lo 90-seoond Intervals. They usually come oul ol and enter the game as a group. Defensemen also are usually substituted for as a pair. There Is no limit to the number of substitutions, or the lhe number ol limes a player may enter the game. The referee does not have to be notified or a substitution, and players may be changed while play ls in progress.

Rules To Know:

Understanding a few basic rules makes for an Involved specIa1or. An ott•side violation occurs when an offensive player precedes ihe puck across the blue line inlo his offensive zone. When lhe puck Is passed from a team's defensive zone to a player ol the same team who is beyond lhe center red fine, an off-side pass Is called. An lclng violation occurs when a team. with bolh squads at full strength, shoots the puck from behind the center red line over Its opponenl's goal line. Rule Infractions in hockey, unlike most sports, are penalized by Ihe violating player shtlng on lhe penalty bench, lhus leaving lhe player's team with less than a lull cofll)lement of players on the ice (shorthanded). There are six classes of penallies: Minor, bench minor, major, misconduct, malch and penally shot, For minor, bench minor, major and malch penalties, the offending learn must play a player short tor a period of two (minor or bench minor), live (major or match) or 1 0 minutes [match). Misconduct penalties Involve the removal o I a player from the game for a period of 1 0 minutes, but a substitute is permitted to immediately replace the player penalized. The most common infractions, such as tripping, slashing, charging, inlerference, boarding, elbowing, cross checking and high sticking, call for minor penallies (two minutes).

Skills To Watch For:

While waIchlng the game ol ice hockey, you'll notice lhat a player must kriow how to skate well In order to succeed In other skllls. An ice hockey player must be able to do on skates what he might normally do on a dry surface in street shoes. That concept is one or the things lhal makes lhe game of lee hockey unique. Stickhandting is called I.he most Tmpor1ant olfensive skill, because II ls done for the purpose ol an offensive player (with the puek) trying to elude a defensive player. The more developed stickhan• dlers are able to control the puck without looking down.

77

Better players are able to shoot the puck while in stride, off eilh.er leg, off the pass, in the mlddle of a skating or stickhandflng maneuver, or whlfe being harassed by a defender. While accuracy and power are lmpor1a111 in goal scoring, they are perha,ps secondary to the surprise or a quick or sudden shot. Passing Is very likely the most dlllicull or the puck control skills, because h requires coordination between two people moving at high speeds and line tuning in order that the puck and pass re• celver arrive together. Remember that each pass that Is made by a team should Improve the team·s position in the attack or continue the auack. Defense is an lmpor1an1 aspect of Ice hockey and checking, an impor1ant derenslve skill, involves three facets: Taking the puck away from an opponent (stici< checking), preventing an opponent from being fn a favorable position to gain control of the puck (covering) and taking the man away from the puck (body checking). To be effective in all Instances of checking, the defensive player must develop the skating abllfty to maintain his body In the proper posftion. Goalkeeping Is often called a ·game within a game.· The goalkeeper, whose first prerequisite Is to want to play the posilion, must keep In mind that lhe most lmpor1an1 skill In stopping the puck Is learning to play the angles. Quickness Is a greal asset, but ihe goalkeeper must be In the right posi tion to make the save. remembering lhat most goals: are scored on rebounds, tip-Ins or screen shots. The fundamentals of skallng, sUckhandllng, shooting, passing, checking and goalkeeping are the things which remain the same al all levels of play. They are what make Ice hockey the fasl and exc,IUng spor1 Ii ls today.
