Arterial lacerations, penetrating chest wounds, blast trauma, and other kinetic injuries can quickly become life-threatening. Seconds may mean the difference between life and death. In the early years of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), combat medics often carried trauma shears and hook knives for patient exposure, however, switching between them was cumbersome, inefficient, and often impossible in the heat of battle. In 2005, Ripshears, LLC came up with a better idea: combine the two cutting tools into one, hence the first RIPSHEARS prototype was born. We spent the next few years refining our design and materials, and establishing domestic production capability in between rigorous training and deployment cycles before hitting the market with the RS-1 RIPPER and RS-2 RIPSHEARS models in 2010.

Our Trade Agreement Act (TAA)-compliant 420J surgical stainless-steel shears feature a titanium carbon nitride (TiCN) coating for exceptional durability, corrosion-resistance, lubricity, and edge retention. TiCN is 800% harder than the underlying stainless steel to which it is chemically bonded, is far superior to fluoride or black oxide coatings for personnel operating in maritime, jungle, desert, arctic, or other austere environments, and will ensure reliable service long after other brands have rusted and failed. RIPSHEARS rapidly cut through multiple textile layers to expose underlying wounds without endangering the patient, and easily dispatch denim, leather, wetsuits, drysuits, aramid fibers (Nomex, Kevlar), chemical biological radiological nuclear explosive (CBRNE) uniforms, bunker gear, seat belts, nylon webbing, and bandages. RS-1, RS-2, and RS-3 models feature an integrated oxygen (O2) wrench.
