ADAM GROUP – The History The family firm of ADAMJEE LUKMAJEE & CO, was established in 1883. As the family grew and diversified the ADAM GROUP OF COMPANIES was founded by our Chairman Dr. S A Gulamhusein. The initial business of the Adam Group was supplying Tea chests, Panels and Batons to tea estates in Sri Lanka. These components were imported from Malaysia. There were 10 employees at the start and this business was conducted under Adamtex established in 1970 In 1972 Adam’s Expo was incorporated in a 1000sq ft office at No.57, Chatham Street, Colombo 01 with a staff strength of 20 with 3 telephone lines. Initial business was export of tea, coconut products and spices and all overseas communication done via cable and telegram.
ADAM GROUP – The History In 1973 Adametals was incorporated in our own premises at 279 Vauxhall street with 05 wire nail machines and 01 Barb wire manufacturing machine. Raw material was imported from South Africa. In 1978 Adam Apparels was started at 26/2 Wardy road, Dehiwala about 10km away from the capital of Sri Lanka with 35 sewing machines and 45 employees to manufacture garments for export. In 1980 Colombo hardware was incorporated (Presently called Adammetal sales Center) to carry out sales of imported hardware items to the wholesale & retail market. In 1982 Adam Gems was Incorporated with 02 gem cutting machines and 5 employees. Initial operations were the import of rough diamonds from India which were then cut and polished and re exported to various markets. In 1993 Spice of Life was Incorporated to process, pack and export Sri Lankan spices.
ADAM GROUP – The History In 1993 Giorgio Morandi (Pvt) Ltd was incorporated with an American collaborator to manufacture high quality garments for export. This factory was situated in the Central province of Sri Lanka and consisted of 550 employees. In 1995 the Adam Group bought controlling interest of one of the oldest public quoted trading companies in Sri Lanka, Ceylon & Foreign Trades (CFT) which was established in 1949 and became a publicly quoted company in 1978. Located on a 480 perch warehousing complex in the heart of Colombo’s commercial hub. CFT has been trading for over 50 years and exports to customers in Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, South and Central America, Russia and the United States. In 2000 the Adam Group bought Adamjee Extractions Pvt Ltd. A state of the art solvent extraction plant (a one of its kind in Sri Lanka) for the production of various vegetable oils. In 2002 Network Communications Pvt Ltd was incorporated for the purposes of VOIP termination of national inbound voices services and origination of Sri lankan voice services, after the group acquired 1 of 32 licenses issued to operate an external gateway for international telecommunication.
