3 Concept Developments for Staircase The present facade of Nakwon market complex looks like a giant wall with gray color. - Concept Development #1 - Collage Wall
The only element organizing the facade is the name of the building and movie poster playing now. Thus, it can make people stuffy and cramped while they walk around this street. Not only to solve this problem but also to celebrate 10th anniversary of ‘Cinematheque Seoul Art Cinema’, the facade will be decorated with artist’s artworks attaching on the glass panel so that it can be changed periodically. The main theme of artworks is music and movie which represent space programs of Nakwon market complex. Eventually, these artworks can stimulate unconscious memories of music and movie

Signing System - Option 1 by Yu-seob Jung
The staircase to the theatre is designed as an archive for the actors and directors who love ‘Cinematheque Seoul Art Cinema’. The purpose of this space is to transcribe the meaning of the ‘movie’ for eternity and emphasize the theatre by renovating the space. The actors and movie directors will choose their favorite films and write down their reason why they like the films. Furthermore, these works will be designed as artworks by graphic designers to revitalize this space.

‘Cinematheque movement’ started at the beginning of the 20th century in Europe. Thus, the concept of this space is designed with the ethos of the age which this movement brought about. Mondrian’s basic idea was that there are universal essentials which penetrate through all things within what we see and the essentials are ultimately in balance with harmony. Therefore, he tried to put the essential elements within everything into his artworks. Through simplifying everything, Mondrian left only three primary colors, red, blue, and black and white with the lines crossing at right angles like an example above. The lobby also is applied with these basic modelings, lines, faces, and basic colors.

Sinchon is filled with too many commercial facilities and shops even though it is known as one of the most popular university towns in South Korea. For this reason, university students who have to lead diverse and free cultures cannot play a leading role to form cultural stream since they have been swept by cultures of older generations. According to this, the culture of university students cannot develop well and has been just vested in another part of the commercialization. Thus, the necessity for students to satisfy their own cultural needs is getting much bigger than before these days.
Background
Site Analysis What kinds of culuture do Korean students have ?
Even though Sinchon has been a shelter for university students for a long time, there is almost no university campus culture around Sinchon for now. Since Sinchon has been commercialized g? kin drin severely these days, it is hard to find a place for students to fulfill their cultural needs. The main cultures do-minated between students these day in university towns in Korea are drinking alcohol or disporting at clubs. However, these activities cannot be seen positive to people and university students seem to be subordinate to commercialization. The place which can contains what students want is very necessary to make changes of their activities and cultures which are solidified by commercialization.

University Railroad Commercial Area N Site
That earth-berm is definetly The element which intensifies this phenomenon of blocking communication commercialization of Sinchon deeply is a railroad between Sinchon and the university! crossing Sinchon street. This exists as an obstacle blocking communication be-tween universities and Sinchon. This project is to suggest a space not only fulfilling students’ free and diverse cultural needs but also solving complex problems Sinchon has owing to the railroad by renovating this place which is a dead space cutting off students from the main street

The Main Flexible Theatre will be designed for avantgarde and experimental theatre performances. As such the technical equipment in this room this room will require a considerable degree of flexibility to enable the space to be utilised to its full potential. All equipment will be state of the art. To allow the maximum artistic value for this space, the design is seen as a simple, large, single room in which a number of towers interlock to form an endless variety of performance spaces. These can be traditional end stage or thrust to totally free form. The design will show a predominantly rectangular form

: Personal Work
This project is to introduce my own design studio on the limited area of 15m x 15m including required programs such as a foyer, conference room, library, pantry, work spaces and etc. The building of the project should be no more thant 200㎡.There are requirements for the project to introduce my own design philosophy, and arrange an atrium, and a garden. The purpose of the project is to show my idea freely by designing my own studio from mass design to materials. Thus, contents of the project show not only my architectural expression and building but also a font for text, studio logo, my own color and sample images. This portfolio consists of these contents to find space and define myself.
Logo OFFICE NAME : NOHOUSE STUDIO
The basic floor plan follows the shape of the logo which has a circular structure with one hole at the centre. The main characteristic of this shape has a circular circulation system revolving around the hole which can be a courtyard.
NECESSITY TO MINIMIZE IMPACT ON NATURE
CIRCULAR STRUCTURE
high-densification of metropolis and new building constructions and reconstructed building followed by new town development are actively in progress in South Korea. In this process, consideration to minimize impact on environment to protect human and nature is needed before development

CIRCULAR STRUCTURE
PERMANENCY, CONTINUITY
SUSTAINABILITY, ECO-FRIENDLY
Continuity and permanency can be translated as substainalbe and eco-frienldy meaning at the architectural context.
I extract metaphysical meanings, continuity and permanency, from the circular structure of the logo. the circulation system which people can freely roam around the interior eternally can be translated as meanings of continuity.
As the logo means substainability, NOHOUSE Design Studio willrepresent the eco-friendly architecture.
CONTINUITY & PERMANENCY
SUSTAINABLE & ECO-FRIENDLY
This logo is oriented from alphabet ‘N’ which is an initial of my last name, ‘NOH’. I combined two ‘N’s , general lower case one and the other which is rotated 180°. The completed logo is seen as a circular structure which can be translated with the meaning of permanency and continuity. Developing this meaning as an architectural context, it is said that the design studio has a goal to build buildings which can put stesses on sustainability and eco-friendly elements as the most imperative things. In addition, the colors of logo are composed with only black and white and it strongly emphasize the simplicity

Even though this mass would be an enough space for the office as it is, the mass will be divided into two parts, a western part and eastern part, and they will be contrasted in the way of presenting a transparent material and solid mass fully covered with the recycled glass material and minimal openings.

Colours of Minimalism As we can see the simplicity from the logo, basic colours for designing studio will be very simple colours, black and white. This colour selection is to weigh more on plainness and simplicity than flamboyance or extravagance. It can be defined as minimalism limiting excessive expression and leaving only what has to be left.

Thus, I want to limit the color variation into grayscale as much as I can.
The facades of the volumes will be clad with vitreous-ceramic slabs made from recycled glass with additives and sintered at a temperature of roughly 1,000℃. With an energy comsumption well below that required for the production of glass, this process allows the manufacture of equally hard, easy-to-clean, translucent and opaque products. After polishing, a sense of depth is achieved that is not possible with glass. Depending on the incidence of light, changesoccur in the coloration and the overall appearance of the facade, thus accentuating the sculptural effect of the volumes. To conclude, this recycled material achieve not only minimizing the consumption of energy but also introducing unique appearances of the building around surroudings with maintaining the concept of minimalism.

Basically, 1st floor is the public space which is for visitors and clients. For this reason, the reception is put on very near to the entrance to welcome visitors and they will be introduced to exhibition area and waiting area. Each space is divided by floor leveling between spaces which conduct different functions. This can make people recognize that they experience different spaces inside the circular office.

2nd floor functions as a private space which means this space is for the employees. Thus, there is a place for employees to have a rest like pantry and a working area.Western part of the building is covered with glass curtain wall so that it can infowthe sunlight actively. Eastern part of the building is the main working area which consists of copy room and working stations. Even though the eastern facade is covered with solid wall, the courtyard at the centre can function to inflow sunlight.

Busan is the second largest city in South Korea. This city has flat ground surrounded by mountains along the eastern and southern coastlines. Along the northwest, Nakdong river, the longest river in South Korea, creates a border for Busan. With the exception of the west having a wide area of flat and gentle ground around the lower parts of the Nakdong River, all other areas are mountanous. This provides a relatively small area of flat ground in relation to the population resulting in a lot of residents being in hilly district.

of these capital projects towards an increasing detachment between the expression of function and the iconic expressions, it is important to pose this question when addressing a project of this scale. Opera projects have traditionally suffered this division between the object and its “mask” : from the Paris Opera through the Sydney opera, to Oslo and Guangzhou, we have seen a progressive detachment between functional and the iconographic envelopes, with the production of very substantial areas of poche space in the projects. Those useless volumes are the register of such detachment. David S.Ingalls Rink, Yale University (Eero Saarinen)

Structural Concept
Minimizing the Structure, Acting as an Acoustic
Structure - Structure Diagram
The structural concept for the Busan Opera Complex is aimed to engage its structural performance with an iconographic one,

avoiding the duplication of the functional shell and the “iconographic” that is common to so many public projects today. By

using a structural system - the catenary- which mini-mizes the structure and acts also as an acousitc form towards the inside,

while producing an expressive form that resonates with the culture of Busan, we are aiming to return to a holistic strategy of consistency between the different aspects of the design. A catenary is fundamentally a structural device to cover a large space without intermediate supports with a minimum of material. It is therefore an ideal structural method to cover large spaces, like the ones we have to provide for the Opera Theater and its stage with overhead machinery. But most importantly, it produces an image which is resonant with the ocean surface that is so close to the heart of the Busan culture. The geometry of the catenary surfaces covering the bulk of the building’s mass offers an unexpected interest by producing a geometrical pattern not dissimilar with the surface of the ocean during storm. But it is not only the surface of the sea that comes to our mind : perhaps it is a

reminiscence of the mountains that surround Busan. Or may be a traditional Korean Village and the pattern of Hanok roofs

In planning the stage configurations the paramount consideration is the ease of operation for performance. The new Opera Theatre in Busan will have the functional and traditional advantages of the wagon stage coupled with state of the art technology which has particular importance for touring productions visiting conventional houses. The stages form a cruciform plan with one full and one half side near cruciform plan allows for full stage sets to be present from the beginning of the performance.

The project is one of the practical experiments of joinery systems for the maser project at Oslo National Academy of the Arts. The aim is to design joints without using any type of adhesives. By designing a variety of these joineries with simple ideas, more complex objects are expected to be designed based on knowledge and know-hows from practices. The values obtained from the practices are playfulness to work with ‘form’ and accuracy needed to build good joineries for bigger-scaled objects.

The project is developed from experiments of simple joinery systems. The aim is to construct structures with functions by using the joinery systems which is personally developed previously. The first object designed is a structure for a small shelf. It is missing two plates that can be put on top and bottom parts of the stucture. This structure is using only one way of joining and can be extended by repeating this joinery system. The other is a structure for a table which used many different types of joining beams together. This is also missing a plate on the top to show how the structure looks like. The characteristics of both objects are possilbe to be assembled and disassembled so that they can be put everywhere users want and they are spaceefficient when they are stored.

For the final project, We settle several rules we have to follow while perfoming, in a space we all together design. We design the space made of paper, which represent a city as a metapor which is vulnerable and susceptilbe to people outside the boudary. It means people living in the city are always observed by others around themselves and are interacting with them in a certain rule they make.
