THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY COMMUNITY STUDIO PROJECT This architecture explores a marriage of the Catholic Church program with the pedestrian/family-friendly, people-focused environment of the West Don Lands neighbourhood. Located at the Bayview-Mill intersection, the church attains a proud stance in its immediate urban environment by emphasizing contrast of its physical elements amongst the various human senses. team date duration class instructor

THE CENTRE FOR STUDY ON MATTER MIGRATION IN WATER BASINS FROM A JOINT DESIGN PROJECT WITH STUDENTS FROM CHINA THREE GORGES UNIVERSITY The Centre for Study on Matter Migration in Water Basins takes its form in a centralized shape where the artificial raining tower becomes the focal point of the whole system. Other functions such as water tanks, labs, filtration systems, office spaces, greenhouse and outdoor experimental spaces are distributed either on the outer edge or separated from the main buildings. The building is symmetrical emphasizes verticality. date June 2012 duration 2 weeks class ASC720 China Architecture Studio instructor Zaiyi Liao

EZ-DRIVER 2013 EXTREME REDESIGN 3D PRINTING COMPETITION: TOP 10 FINALIST Extreme Redesign Competition asks its participants to reinvent products, compensating existing defects. EZ-Driver allows continuous turning of the screwdriver, making the use of a screwdriver more convenient. When using a conventional screwdriver, users were compelled to repeat multiple steps of holds and turns until screws were completely tightened. The EZ-Driver, however, has two phases: conventional mode, which can be used when it is necessary to screw or unscrew near corners or edges, as well as a turning mode, of which the shank can be pulled out and pivoted to enable the turning of a knob. 34

UNDERSCAPE 2014 NXT CITY PRIZE COMPETITION: TOP 8 FINALIST Underscape defines problems of open public plaza and aims to maximize its use. Unless there are events being held, public plazas are underused because there are not enough seating and shades. This project improves flexibility of seating areas in Dundas Square by deploying benches underground with adjustable canopies. When the square needs open space for public events, the canopies can be folded down to a ground level, allowing pedestrians to walk on top of it. Inversely, Underscape provides ample seating and shades when no events are being held. The walls and canopies are oriented towards the south to deliver shades. The form derives from the size of the existing granite slabs on Dundas Square. The periphery of the pit is covered with pebbles with a patch of grass in the centre. This feature creates a strong visual link through the glass window on the canopy, bringing nature back into densely populated urban area. At night, the enclosed Underscape provides lighting from the below to generate dynamic experience for the users. team Taehoon Kim Jaepil Yoo Gunil Choi date July 2014 duration 1 week

THE RAMP 2012 AC-CA CASABLANCA MARKETPLACE COMPETITION The site of the proposed development is located a manageable distance from the Medina along Boulevard Tahar El Alaoui and the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco. Considering the floating population of the marketplace, the team has decided to maximize the total proposed area of 790m2: the marketplace has been lifted aboveground and pathways are unobstructed to allow continuous movements. The two ramps are the focal pieces and they intertwine and share architectural spaces such as roofs and ceilings. Additionally, non-linear shared spaces as open areas and the stage allow dynamic spatial sequences.

REVITALIGHT 2013 NUIT BLANCHE Through responsive technology, the installation will acknowledge the participants’ presence. It provides a dynamic experience in the existing site for the passersby, but will also serve a purpose for the user to highly engage with the space through the use of motion sensors embedded in the installation. By integrating technology and aesthetic in urban context where population density is high, RevitaLight aims to inspire and interest the public in adaptive design features, as well as to increase the value of unused spaces. Therefore, pedestrians will engage in a unique sensory experience during the night with this kinetic installation, reflecting the scale and spirit of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche. team Taehoon Kim, Daehee Kim, Benyi Hu, Lisa Chien, Jeff Lei, Chao Fan date October 5, 2013 duration 8 weeks location Bata Shoe Museum, Toronto, ON class ASC755 Digital Tools instructor Vincent Hui
