School of Public Policy Spring 2018 Duration: 6 Weeks Medium: Pencil on Paper, ProCreate, Photoshop, AutoCad Architecture, and Revit Objective: Design the new School of Public Policy building for University of Maryland with regards to site contexts. Location: University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742 The School of Public Policy building has its own presence and identity that follows the site context of Colonial Revival buildings. The Colonial Revival Style was adopted at the University of Maryland, particularly to its colonial and post-revolutionary history. The building is directly adjacent to the Lee building and is aligned with the Marie Mount building. Specifically, the building is methodically framing the significant open space known as the Memorial Chapel Lawn. The building’s massing, material choice, and detailing exhibits a carefully considered response to the adjacent buildings. In addition, the building’s design consists of two different styles of pediments on each side of the entrance to emphasize its centrality.

Purple Line Tram Stop Spring 2017 Duration: 2 Weeks Medium: ProCreate, Photoshop, and AutoCad Architecture. Objective: Design a tram stop as the new metro purple line on the University of Maryland campus that also caters as a public place. Location: College Park, MD, Intersection of Baltimore Ave and Rossborough Ln The Purple Line Tram Stop will act as a gateway to every program that is around the University of Maryland, while also accommodating as a public and outdoor space. The tram stop allows for innovation and new commercial expansion. The main idea of this design was to create a sculptural object that acts as a tram stop. Developing two curved reinforced concrete elements on each side created an area that has two defined spaces. The curve element that is on the right-hand side acts a bike rack area, while the left-hand side consists of a retail area. In addition, the seating and kiosk spaces are in the middle region. The tram stop is supported by 8 columns that are equally separated and adjacent to one another. The effect of the columns precisely frames one of the entrances to the Ritchie Coliseum.

Transformation Studies: Case Study of Vanna Venturi House Spring 2017 Duration: 3 Weeks Medium: AutoCad, and Model Making. Objective: Design a primary space, a sequence of movement, and a tectonic expression of the work in a speculative framework inspired by the precedent study. Location: N/A The design strategy begun with a precedent interpretation from the analysis of Vanna Venturi House designed by Robert Venturi. The design consists of primary space, a sequence of movement, and a tectonic expression of the work in speculative framework. The design displays clear diagrams and models that communicate conceptual understanding of the project through translation into a new model. In the model diagrams, two spaces are interlocking with each other, which creates a staircase for circulation. Overall, a new idea and design is able to be created by critically analyzing and rethinking the original precedent.

Origami Structure Spring 2017 Duration: 5 Days Medium: Paper. Objective: Construct a structure made from paper and glue that can carry the heaviest load, while still able to fold back to a flat plane. Location: College Park, MD Origami designs and constructions allow artists to produce an array of shapes and forms using only paper. Simple material has the ability to be reshaped or combined to form tools or machines to fulfill a need. This origami structure competition involved designing and building a foldable and smart origami construction made from paper. The design intent was to divide 30 sheets of 8.5 X 11 paper into 16 small rectangular pieces of paper, and ultimately manipulate the dimensions to form multiple tiny origami pieces. These origami pieces consisted of three simple folds, which were horizontal, vertical, and diagonal. The final diagonal fold helped create a void within each fold, so the origami pieces could securely interlock with each other without the use of any glue.
