The Bosphorus Company of Pharmaceuticals Istanbul, Turkey The Bosphorus Company of Pharmaceuticals is a powerful private company with its headquarters office and production plant in Beylerbeyi, a coastal neighborhood on the Asian side of Istanbul. This conglomerate is a ‘fictional’ antagonist to the current power figures of the society, who hold and control all the means of accessing unaltered, accurate information. The Bosphorus Company utilizes its technology and location in the city into an anti-monument that simultaneously communicates the public sentiments to 2.5 million people crossing the Bosphorus Bridge every day. It does this by a series of chemical processes that turn the botanical plants on this urban anti-monument into a responsive, dynamic broadcasting tool. Located nestled on a hill facing one of the most crowded intercontinental routes in the country, this ‘anti-monument’ is a reminder to the sixteen million Istanbulites that they are not alone. So, the next time when all news outlets claim how great the Turkish economy is doing - and it just does not register with you, a trip over the bridge would be enough to see whether the botanical garden’s plants’ color has turned into the purple color of the stress hormone, cortisol, or not.
The Botanics Complex The Botanics Complex acts as a broadcasting medium, an urban anti-monument that disseminates unaltered information. The way how the hormones are collected and paired up with different colored pigments is used to make the plants that are fed with the particular colored plant meal to change their colors. Thus after a series of photosynthesis and biological food/sugar storage, their leaves and the other body parts store this pigmented hormone that causes the leaves to change color. Simply, let’s say that 1 USD raises up to 20 TRY. (Hope not, though) So the public would feel very stressed. Thus their bodies produce immense amounts of Cortisol Hormone, which is the stress hormone. This hormone is refused out of the organism and sent to the sewage system.
The citizens’ emotional data, hormones, is fetched from Istanbul’s sanitary system and chemically processed into individual pure hormones. Then these hormones are actively pushed through the pipes that feed the botanical plants. During an event when causes a great majority of the citizens to feel alike, say in a much-like economic crisis to Turkey’s long-deteriorating economy, the cortisol hormone would be simultaneously infused with the ‘purple’ pigment and then pushed up to the garden above. Just like the well-known celery experiment, the plants store this hormone-infused food in their leaves, which causes a temporary color change. The Public Authority For Environmental Acts Istanbul, Turkey The UN Climate Summit 2019 has again shown how ignorant the decision-making positions could be regarding scientific data and environmental agenda. Yet, these would be the same decision-makers sponsoring ‘environment-friendly’ campaigns to extend their base for political gain. Inspired by this unsentimental relationship of the decision-makers, particularly one embodied in the form of a highway sign on Henry Hudson Parkway in NYC; this project investigates a new social structure, in which the ‘capital owners’ and ‘politicians’ would have to comply with the scientific research. In 2050, pollution and overpopulation cause an exodus to the rural. Abandoned these market-driven production machines of the capital, mega-cities, a privately-funded, science-led, publicly-owned institution has emerged to develop methods and technologies that will help reclaim these megacities.
Toomer House Remodel, or 2.0, is based upon the first construction project that started in the hillside lot in Istanbul’s Etiler neighborhood. This condensed summer project uses the line weights, CAD drawings, and architectural design language in a beautiful, clean, and technical way. The material choices from BRICS blocks to the zinc cladding have been made in mind with local production and environmental impact throughout.
A House in Forest Hills Queens, New York, NY Archi-Tectonics Professional Project Designed by Grosvenor Atterbury & Frederick Law Olmsted, the Forest Hills Housing project has been a prominent frontier for the suburban housing boom. This project is one of the first to implement prefabricated construction techniques - which later became an industry standard. This renovation project approaches the building’s heritage with respect, aiming to achieve much with light design decisions. As part of the summer internship in Archi-Tectonics, NYC; I was responsible for a wide array of duties, from surveying, drafting, conceptual and architectural design, interior design - including custom furniture design & furniture specs, engineering solutions, legal obligations, and architectural representation and visualization. Collaborations include: Department of Buildings, for building codes, zoning documents, legal works. 2LS Engineering, for structural, electrical and mechanical engineering solutions. apartments for a shorter amount of time. This is the time the “Panel-Block Apartment Buildings” boomed they were everywhere, rising up from the greeneries of mikrorayons with their cold, low-quality, out-ofscale bodies. Thus today, a once-thriving mikrorayon of Moscow, Chertanovo Severnoye, is one of the most dangerous places to live in the city, just like its many other successors. Many share the same repeated patterns in where they failed: Absence of social condensers, enormous blocks that disregard entirely the concept of scale, desolated neighborhoods at specific hours, lack of eyes on the streets, and several more.
The Algorithm to Save The Suburbs Welcome to the Soviet Suburbia Once an icon of the progressive ideals of the Soviet Union, the dreams of equal opportunities and quality housing for all ended up becoming endless fields of concrete blocks. Although these very ideals have started the much-admired Russian Constructivist movement, the population boom following the Union’s international success has forced the country’s leaders to found a viable, scalable solution to provide every Soviet citizen with an equal quality of living. Hence were born the Khrushchyovkas: On the contrary to its detached single-family housing counterparts in America, these panel block apartments were much denser and significantly more effective and cheaper to build. Yet, with an unprecedented need for public housing, this ‘Soviet Panel Apartment Block Experiment’ ended up as mechanic, repetitive and dorm-like functioning bete-noire neighborhoods. Sixty years later, at a time when accessing public and urban data is easier than ever, what do the emerging technologies and transdisciplinary architectural practices have to offer for reclaiming these long-neglected Sleeping Districts of today? If so, can an algorithm or computers help to rebuild them into the thriving neighborhoods of the future?
As the 2ND year studio, the goal was to interact as much as we could with the surrounding parcel owners and build a sustainable residential project with a sub-function. During the studio, each lot was supposed to create a narrative, a scenario, a set of characters and their roles and as a result, come up with a list of requirements. Connecting two unreachable points between parcels 20 and 22, and letting them use the project building as a shortcut was the main idea of the project. As a characteristic, the building evolved around a socially important point of view and the most recognizable look became this staircase looking almost like an amphitheater. The building was owned by a Maker couple and they would’ve invite interested people to their houses for them to use their workshops and tools: Some sort of a communal housing project, just like a maker campus. These people would live here for a short period of time, while the original two owners temporarily reside in the building. Presentation 5 posters 1 model AA
BBVA Compass Bank Auburn, Alabama This project is awarded with 2nd Place in Concrete Competition 2018 in Auburn University CADC. The perfect example of an American College Town, Auburn’s downtown, recently went under several renovation projects. The existing BBVA Bank building was located right at the south-eastern corner of two of the city’s busiest avenues, placing it in a significantly prominent position in the city’s urban front. As part of Auburn University’s fifth-semester Architectural Design Studio, this project aims to bring the European urban fabric to the beloved, car-centric suburbs. Inspired by the dense urban cores and diverse street dynamics of cities like London, Rome, and Paris, this project aims to create a social condenser by enriching the street-level commercial function by including a hybrid commercial tenant: a coffee-shop

The factory uses the sewage system as a resource of hormones and water. The enormous amounts of Cortisol is separated and stored in the hormone tanks. Since the amount of hormone is relatively so much more than the others in the particular event time, the tank will fill up faster - thus causing this specific hormone to be the dominant one to be used. Let’s assume that this hormone is paired up with Quinacridone, which is an organic violet pigment. So the violet is directly associated with stress, a.k.a. Cortisol. Violet colored plant meal is given to the plants, plants will do their jobs and store the violet pigmented sugars & foods & water in their cells. Causing their green color to turn into Quinacridone color, which is violet.
All in an effort to give Auburn a more walkable, inviting and lively downtown. As an outcome, these pushed out curvy forms became the main entrance points. The voids became the social areas, where people can hang out or be in the private and talk to their colleagues. This is how its made.

Rarities: Adaptive Re-Use
Welcome to the Soviet Suburbia, once promising a much brighter lifestyle to generations, the dream of Soviet suburbs are now nothing but endless fields of concrete blocks that are all derivatives of each other. As future folks, a new methodology is a must to create the new generation of suburbs that works not as a sleeping district but a quality, living organism. Can such a computer, such a tool, be used to create the perfect neighborhoods of the future?

The post-anthropogenic conditions have fundamentally changed the social structures, forcing the remaining few communities to build resilient, dynamic habitats to persevere and ameliorate the environmental consequences of current economic and political practices. This mini-project anticipates one of the possible habitats in which the people live under the contaminated soil to clean the heavy metals and toxic materials by utilizing phytoremediating plants.
What would the spatial tectonics of architecture if money had to follow science first and always? How sentimental would this compliance be? Due to the increasingly unforeseeable environmental catastrophes exacerbated by the profit-first market practices, the exodus from the cities to the rural has left mega-cities abandoned. Broken these market-driven production machines, this privately funded institution develops methods to help reclaim our mega-cities.

Bringing the European urban fabric to such an exemplary American college-town, this project aims to enrich the commercial function of the existing bank building with a third-place on the street level. While a bank needs a space for their customers to wait for their lines or processes, it could also be a great place to sit down, drink coffee and check e-mails while waiting. All in effort to give Auburn a walkable, enjoyable downtown.

CREATING A GOOD-HEARTED CONGLOMERATE The Bosphorus Company of Pharmaceuticals is located near the Bosphorus Bridge, in Beylerbeyi. Its location gives this landlord a significant visual capital. By creating a fictional, good-hearted conglomerate against the equally-powerful figures of society, I aimed to imagine the architecture of ‘How would it be like if this company have actually had this piece of land, and used it for the same purpose?’ As I dived deeper in this universe, a consistent graphic language, logos and color choices have emerged.

AN ARCHITECTURE THAT IS CELEBRATING ITS OWN VISUAL CAPITAL Every day and every night, The Bosphorus Company of Pharmaceuticals will strive to use its resources for the betterment of self and society. This anti-monument will stand strong and proud against all the mainstream broadcasting of the dominant. The pharmaceutical gardens will feed the emotions of the people of this city. This ever-changing, unaltered organic media is programmed to dye the plants’ leaves in the emotion’s color. Thus, this production garden will also serve people as a reminder: What you feel is what they feel. We are not alone. We are in this all together.

COMMUNICATING PUBLIC THOUGHTS
Hormones are the chemical equivalent of emotions. These chemical molecules can be collected from the city’s sanitary system as trace-products of the human excretory system.
After chemically separating these hormones, each of them is infused with a pigment of a distinct color. Hence, each human emotion would be color-coded to distinguish one from another visually.
When a hormone becomes produced significantly more than the others, this excess hormone is pumped up to the gardens above, where plants will produce energy and store the pigments in their leaves.
Nested on a hill facing the Bosphorus Bridge where 2.5 million people cross each day, an intercontinental road trip would be enough for an objective pulse-check on the citizens.
THE BOSPHORUS COMPANY OF PHARMACEUTICALS
As of today, The Bosphorus Company of Pharmaceuticals moves to the new production campus for its new headquarters in Beylerbeyi, Istanbul. Starting from the first day, the botanical facility will activate its integrated sewage treatment plant to fetch human emotional data from the sewage sludge. The six different types of hormones, the chemicals responsible for human expressions, can, in fact, be separated and chemically processed into an architectural medium that can communicate the public’s genuine sentiments.

4 CREATING A RIVER THAT FLOWS ALONG WITH THE SPIRAL The ramp creates an effortless way of transporting raw materials - plant parts like leaves or flowers, into the decantation pool directly. Gardeners collect the crucial leaves that are full of hormones and drop them into the river flow, which carries them right to where the extracting happens.
5 PLANTING THE BOTANICAL PLOTS The botanical plots are inspired by the tea gardens, which are usually planted as long rows that run parallel to each other. This way, it is easy to keep track of them while also having a designated pathway for the gardeners & visitors.

THESE PIPES ARE OUT OF SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE, THE SAME MATERIAL THAT’S USED IN DIALYSIS MACHINES. WITH THIS, THE PLANT MEAL IS GIVEN TO THE PLANTS ORGANICALLY BASED ON SIMPLE DIFFUSION & OSMOSIS PRINCIPALS. THESE VERTICAL STORAGE ELEMENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE WITH KEEPING THE DIFFERENT ORGANIC MATERIALS, HORMONES IN THIS CASE, IN A CONCENTRATED FORM. THIS CONDENSED PURE HORMONAL MATERIAL WILL BE REFERRED AS *RELATED HORMONE* PLANT-MEAL IN FURTHER STEPS. ONCE A PARTICULAR HORMONE CAPSULE IS FULL, OR IN SEVERAL OCCASIONS, MORE THAN THE OTHER ONES, THAT PARTICULAR PLANT-MEAL IS PUMPED UP TO THE BOTANICS COMPLEX FOR PLANTS TO BE FED.

DEODORIZATION PROCESS BEFORE PUMPED UP TO THE BOTANICS COMPLEX ABOVE, THE CONCENTRATED PLANT-MEAL HAS TO BE DEODORIZED FROM THE SEWAGE ODOR. FOR THIS PURPOSE, ALL THE HORMONE CAPSULES ARE COVERED WITH ACTIVATED CHARCOAL SURFACES FROM THE INSIDE. IN THE PROCESS OF CONCENTRATING, THE SEWAGE LIQUID IS ALSO BEING DEODORIZED AT THE SAME TIME.
UPON COMPLETION OF THE CENTRIFUGING PROCESS HORMONES ARE STORED IN THIS MASSIVE TANK IN LINE WITH THEIR RESPECTIVE MOLECULE WEIGHTS.

BEFORE ANY FURTHER PROCESSING, THE REST OF THE SLUDGE AND THE ORGANIC COMPONENTS (HORMONES) NEED TO BE DECOMPOSED. AFTER FURTHER BIOLOGICAL DEGRADATION PROCESS, THE HORMONES AND THE REST OF THE LIQUID ARE SENT TO ‘THE CENTRIFUGE’, WHERE THE MATERIALS ARE DECOMPOSED INTO THEIR PUREST FORMS AFTER A VERY FAST PHYSICAL ACCELERATION PROCESS.

TO ACHIEVE THIS, NATURALLY OCCURRING MICROORGANISMS ARE CULTIVATED IN THE TANKS TO CONSUME MOST OF THE ORGANIC MATERIAL THAT’S IN SEWAGE. ONCE THE BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT PROCESS IS ENDED, THE SEWAGE MATERIAL IS NEARLY ELIMINATED FROM 95-98% OF THE UNWANTED MATERIAL.

IN THIS CASE, THE MELATONIN HORMONE IS MIXED UP WITH RED PIGMENT (LYCOPENE, ALSO FOUND ON TOMATOES AND RED CARROTS). WHEN MELATONIN PLANT-MEAL IS SENT TO THE GENETICALLY PRODUCED PLANTS, THEY USE THIS PRODUCE IN THEIR NATURAL PHOTOSYNTHESIS PROCESS. THIS CAUSE A CHANGE IN THE COLOR OF THEIR LEAVES AS THIS MELATONIN INFUSED PLANTMEAL IS MULTIPLIED AND STORED IN THEIR LEAVES AS STORAGE MOLECULES. WHEN ALL THE PLANTS ARE FED WITH A PLANT-MEAL THAT’S DERIVED FROM THE ORGANIC MATERIAL PRODUCED BY THE CITY POPULATION AS A REACTION AND THEY CHANGE COLOR AS A REACTION TO THIS EMOTIONAL RESPONSE, YOU HAVE A MASS-SCALE DYNAMIC MONUMENT THAT REFLECTS THE EMOTIONAL STATE OF THE PEOPLE COMPOSING A NATION.

The bridge you cross everyday shapes your mind. The place we walk, laugh, live and grow in shape your mind. The school you walk into would shape it, the bus you take would shape it, even the names of them you see on a sign would, eventually, shape your mind so subtly and unconsciously that you will think that you will forget that you’ve ever been molded into it. The uncontrolled power brings a particular freedom to the ones who own it: To own and control the minds of the others who live under your power. Imagine this: You have such an immense control that you can change the name of the bridge millions of people cross everyday, into your own political propaganda. If you could -only- skew millions of minds -if only by 1%- in the direction that could benefit you, how great that would be! This practice is pretty common among the power figures of the society. In Turkey, almost all the mainstream media channels, TVs, websites and newspapers; are controlled by a single group. Outside of Turkey, most of the ‘democracies’ have still certain mechanisms that resembling these practices too. Nevertheless, even the dominant tech companies, like Google, Apple or Facebook, enjoy similar unlimited powers that would enable them to alter the stream of information in line with their economical gains. Neither commercial practices, political agendas or even computers are completely unbiased. But, if we as the future architects, designers, and thinkers, try to solve this issue by democratizing the future built environments. Such environments that will spread true, unaltered knowledge and give equal opportunities that will foster social empowerment and equity between all the classes within the social strata.

The United States of Whatever’s Left
AND THE FREE WILLINGLY PHYTOREMEDIATING PEOPLE OF IT In a quite foreseeable future, the post-anthropocene world has left people to build ever-resilient dynamic architectures to survive
THE UNITED STATES OF WHATEVER'S LEFT
In the post-global warming world, the economy machine is rendered broken. The vast majority of people have lost their lives due to hunger, drought, or pollution. The current democracies yielded to semi-autonomous communities as the land became hostile for agriculture. People came together, and free-willingly agreed on phytoremediation. Whatever’s left of the nation’s wealth has been restructured to recultivate farmlands to end this crippling food crisis. These ‘earth decontaminating colonies’ stay below the surface, detoxifying the soil in their worm-like remediator machines, which double as a house and triple as a farm. These machines bore tunnels under the once fertile lands until reaching an optimal location. In such case, the phytoremediating plants are re-catalyzed and carefully grown with their roots facing outwards of the exterior shell. This way, these plants’ ever-expanding roots absorb toxic material like zinc, arsenic, or even worse, uranium; and convert them into less harmful things such as Sour Patch Kids - still dangerous, yet tolerable. Although slow and painful, the wartime like mobilization and resilience that these steel boring machines are designed within the mind, they offer future generations an optimistic resolution: One day, when enough is cleaned away, I will finally dig up to the surface again - just to see how green looks under the sunlight. Oh, wait, what does the sunlight look like?

The Public Authority For Environmental Acts BROUGHT TO YOU BY J.P. MORGAN CHASE & CO.
This privately sponsored public institution from 2050 develops strategies to mitigate climate change & its effects The UN Climate Summit 2019 has again shown how ignorant the decision-making positions could be regarding scientific data and environmental agenda. Abandoned these market-driven production machines of the capital, mega-cities, a privately-funded, science-led, publicly-owned institution has emerged to develop methods and technologies that will help reclaim these mega-cities. Here, the investors come and ask to sponsor the research and remediation actions. In return, they will have their ‘propaganda’ on the saline-water resistant sunflower colonies that clean the waters. So when these cities become inhabitable, they would be the ones who let it happen. THIS PROJECT IS LOCATED IN THE GOLDEN HORN, ISTANBUL, TURKEY

These spaces are communication offices inside of the research center between researchers and the financiers.
SCIENTISTS
The College for Anthropocene Generations
The Environment Parliament & Tender Rooms
The children of the public members are eligible to attend this institution where researchers teach their students with rather more relevant curricula: The next gen of environmental scientists.
This is where scientists make their points, explain their research, announce their action plan and required budget, and try to get the best bid from the investors.
Obligatory Weekly Waste Contribution Program A.K.A. “The Novel Garbage Tax” In order to keep using the facilities, each member is obliged to deposit a certain amount of waste they collect in the city every week. This waste is then taken to the recycling facility, where it is used to produce various end-products from recycled paper to energy.
The Farmlands & Scientists’ Piers for The Halophytes
THE PUBLIC The Public Authority gives an opportunity to the dwellers who don’t have a chance to leave the city: Instead of going to their day jobs, they can farm the colonies, have a word in the parliament and send their kids to the new Anthropocene colleges in exchange to their expected deposits of household trash of a certain amount every week.
In this section of the campus, the members grow plants that are part of the experiment. The Farmlands are an ever-growing accumulation of agricultural land that is being converted from the empty parking lots and idle parklands that is surrounding the coastline of Golden Horn.
THE CAPITAL Global corporations, bureaucrats, shareholders, and private investors are the financial supporters of this institution. They try to make the biggest bids in the tenders to get the biggest advertising space on the colonies. Ultimately, these advertisements will boost their reputation in an ever-increasingly environmentally-aware society. Thus the capital aims to increase its popularity and profits in the future by sponsoring this institution.

...TO SCIENCE POLITICS...
...WITH OUR BEST SENTIMENTS
In this narrative, the capital owners have to listen to and respect the scientists’ studies, research, methods, and opinions. This is the architecture of an alternative realm where a shift towards science politics is a must.
These and many other types of propaganda and advertisements are distributed all over the country, to spread the action and gain public ‘appreciation’
THE PUBLIC AUTHORITY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTS
HALOPHYTE RHIZOFILTRATING SUNFLOWERS Sunflowers have been used for many times in order to fight with pollutants and toxic chemicals that were released after such events like a nuclear explosion, just like the one back in 1997 in Chernobyl, or more recently in Fukushima. Halophyte sunflowers have been in research and development for long periods of time. For instance, during the remediation works of Chernobyl, halophyte sunflowers have been extensively used for cleaning the water on special containers, or boats. These boats contain a certain amount of nutrients to keep the sunflowers working. This way, this hydroponic remediation process’ longevity is ensured.
The main goal of “The Public Authority for Environmental Acts” institution is to create a new generation of people who will live in the age in which the humankind is directly affecting the nature. This anthropogenic generation will have the scientific knowledge and the practical skills to resist, rewind and even prevent future environmental catastrophes by actively participating in the research, experiment and decision-making practices that has a direct impact on their daily lives and the climate and environment they are living in.
Highly concentrated, complex, flexible and interconnected spaces aim to augment institutional relations between the investors, scientists and the public, making sure that everyone engages in decision making. Whether it is depositing a weekly of daily amount of waste the first thing in the morning or eating lunch with the head researcher, the dean and the CEO of a top venture capital firm in the same table of the eatery of this institution as a member: Bringing all for the betterment of the planet and the society by practice.

The office building The parliament & college Elevation from north Sections - Top to Bottom:
The pods are the smallest architectural unit of the project; as well as the most mobile piece of the system. They keep the phytoremediating halophyte plants, A.K.A. sun owers, within a secure enclave.
The Working Mechanism, Explained The podgrids are steel frames, in which the pods can be placed. One podgrid contains fifteen pods, making it easy for a forklift to transfer them.
The end-product of this institution. The epicenter and the ‘masterpiece’ of what all these people are working around the clock for. Floating platforms are released from the institution’s docklands, as explained, to be carried by a drone to their appointed position in the Bosphorus. After some time, the salt-water breaks up the 100% recyclable and dissolvable platform enclave, and the sun owers got eaten by the fish. Possibly. If there’s any left anyway.
While the building houses scientists, capitalists, and the people doing their everyday thing, they are also obliged to deposit a certain amount of repurposable waste every week. These silos, located conveniently in the middle of the common area, collect, store, and recycle the organic waste, sludge, or paper dough to reuse them as paper, ink, or energy.
THE PUBLIC AUTHORITY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTS
These towers are where the last resort before the plants are sent out to the waters. A forklift brings the pod grid from the upper level onto the boat unfolder. The pre-folded and compressed ‘platform’ enclave, made out of waterproof coated durable recycled paper, is then mechanically unfolded and assembled in the assembly line. After this process is complete, the platform is pushed down in the water, along with the other instances in the sun ower colonies.

Welcome to the Soviet Suburbia! Once an icon of the progressive ideals of the Soviet Union, the dreams of equal opportunities and quality housing for all ended up becoming endless fields of concrete blocks. Sixty years later, at a time when accessing public and urban data is easier than ever, what do the emerging technologies and interdisciplinary architectural practices have to offer for reclaiming these long-neglected Sleeping Districts of today? If so, can an algorithm or computers help to rebuild them into the thriving neighborhoods of the future?

People work to make a living. Most of the work is done at an office. Encouraging services, companies, and start-ups to have their HQs in the area prevents white-collars from leaving the mikrorayon, thus no more sleeping district.
Places where people can get away from their home and working places. This can be a friendly coffee shop, a bookstore, or any social space they feel comfortable spending a lot of time.
The neighborhood’s desolation in the daytime and the lack of people flow leave streets empty and insecure. For people who are on the streets, a natural flow would naturally keep the exteriors safer.

Where are those good old neighbors and neighborhoods? One of the most important factors that give dwellers a sense of security is trust, and knowing who their neighbors are. Isn’t it?
Commercial spaces contribute to a neighborhood that keeps drawing foot-load and staying lively during the day. That is why most of the dense European urban cores are very successful! Sprinkle them all in between apartments!
One of the most prominent qualities of Soviet Housing Projects is the sense of enormous scale. Although panel block apts are quite regular in size, they were mostly constructed in attached groups of 4 or 6.
Libraries are an excellent example of a non-commercial third place. They not only create a sense of community while improving the quality of education near the neighborhood.
The Moscow Suburbs resemble archipelagos. The only difference is that instead of being separated by water, these urban islands are separated by highways and wide avenues that are tram stops going through them.
Besides periodical sports events, non-commercial sports facilities are also an excellent example of functional areas that can improve the overall quality of health within the site and the time spent outside.
Although today’s urban cores need green spaces more than ever, if not well-maintained and in excessive amounts, they can become hostile for the residents.

BBVA Compass Bank in Auburn, Alabama MEET ME IN THE BANK! This award-winning project re-imagines the street dynamics of Auburn’s car-centric downtown by diversifying its building program with tenants, activities and social connections. Inspired by the dense urban cores and diverse street dynamics of cities like London, Rome, and Paris, this project aims to create a social condenser by enriching the street-level commercial function by including a hybrid commercial tenant: a coffee-shop! All in an effort to give Auburn a more walkable, inviting and lively downtown.

A House in Forest Hills, NY LET THE SUNLIGHT IN! Located in Forest Hills, America’s first Garden City Housing Project, this historical townhouse project promises a peaceful family living Designed by Grosvenor Atterbury & Frederick Law Olmsted, the Forest Hills Housing project has been a prominent frontier for the suburban housing boom. This project is one of the first to implement prefabricated construction techniques - which later became an industry standard. This renovation project approaches the building’s heritage with respect, aiming to achieve much with light design decisions. As a part of my summer internship in Archi-Tectonics, NYC, I was responsible for a wide array of duties, from surveying, drafting, conceptual and architectural design, interior design - including custom furniture design & furniture specs, engineering solutions, legal obligations, and architectural representation and visualization. The institutions and companies I worked with include: Department of Buildings, for building codes, zoning documents, legal works. 2LS Engineering, for structural, electrical and mechanical engineering solutions. An Urban Anti-Monument Istanbul, Turkey The bridge you cross everyday shapes your mind. Nevertheless, even the dominant tech companies, like Google, Apple or Facebook, enjoy similar unlimited powers that would enable them to alter the stream of information in line with their profits.
The Riverbank State Park The Bosphorus Company of Pharmaceuticals’ graphics language is inspired by the Riverbank State Park in Henry Hudson Pkwy in New York City. In fact, every project in this book is inspired by the unconscious stream of thought of mine. This book is my very own thought registry. Starting with ‘The Bosphorus Company of Pharmaceuticals’ to ‘The Public Authority for Environmental Acts,’ you are invited to my observations, projections and optimistic resolutions to the problems I have encountered at some point in my life. The places I visit, the music I listen to, the people I meet, the book I read - what you see on the left, you’ll find them in some way throughout the portfolio. The works you’ll see in these next few pages are the ultimate and most refined end-products of all my stream of consciousness. A therapy of some sorts... Emotions don’t lie. So doesn’t biology. At a time when the political figures gain immense control over mainstream media, they also hold the means that may enable them to skew news, facts and other types of information.
Sunflowers have been used for many times in order to fight with pollutants and toxic chemicals that were released after such events like a nuclear explosion, just like the one back in 1997 in Chernobyl, or more recently in Fukushima.

The Parcel 21 Sile, Istanbul Foundation Studio Parcel 21 project is located in one of the north-easternmost boroughs of Istanbul, Şile and the name Parcel 21 comes from the 30 different parcels the other project members got from a large empty area that is planned to be an off-the-scale mass housing project is going to be constructed in real life. The building was owned by a Maker couple and they would invite interested people to their houses for them to use their workshops and tools: Just like a university campus, but for makers!

cessful methodology to be ignored to supply cheaper apartments for a shorter amount of time. This is the time the “Panel-Block Apartment Buildings” boomed they were everywhere, rising up from the greeneries of mikrorayons with their cold, low-quality, out-ofscale bodies. Once-thriving mikrorayon, Chertanovo Severnoye, is one of the most dangerous places to live in the city, just like its many other successors. Many share the same repeated patterns in where they failed: Absence of social condensers, enormous blocks that disregard entirely the concept of scale, desolated neighborhoods at specific hours, lack of eyes on the streets, and several more.

In the first lecture & workshop set we have worked on Grasshopper & Laser Cutting - Contouring tools to create a 3D topography out of cardboard. One of the end results was also The Wiggle Chair by Frank Gehry. With the best co-founders: Esra Öner & Serra Keklik
Although we never lost touch, I had finally met my old friend Petri in person. All these reflections reminded me of how I never lost that creative urge to build things that touched people’s lives; it only grew stronger in me as I discovered myself and my purpose in college. Happy to be back home, I left the plane feeling a sudden excitement about the next chapters in my life.
Hardworking Sunflowers? The Algorithm That Will Save The Suburbs!
A series of workshops and lectures to introduce first and second year architecture students with computational design
Baking Models aims to spread the know-how of digital fabrication techniques in architectural education, as well as disseminate theoretical and historical knowledge about the previous and current digital ‘revolutions’, predominantly in the design and architecture industry.
be passionate about and build global connections along the way. This would bring me closer to my goal: Becoming an entrepreneur architect and building intelligent systems to solve urban issues around the world. As the plane was descending for Istanbul, I was happy that I’d finally come to Finland thanks to this travel grant for a VR game workshop.

Phytoremediation is an established phenomenon that utilizes specialized or genetically modified plants to filter and remove toxic substances and excess contamination. Driven by the ever-increasingly pressing environmental changes, the last decade has seen exponential growth in the number of publications made on a particular sub-set of these plants: hyper-accumulators. Most notably executed after the Chernobyl explosion, Sunflowers helped a long way as scientists struggle to find cheaper, more sustainable, and more deployable agents that can be used for environmental remediation. As the mega-cities started demanding an ever-growing portion from the crust of the earth, can the built-environment disciplines find ways of utilizing these hard-working cleaning agents to reduce the toxic burden of our urban centers? Until we can finally manage to convert and rebuild our cities into zero-energy, environmentally friendly places; the hybrid methods present a realistic potential for the short run. In light of this investigation, a similar hybrid strategy would be a good fit to tackle with the effects of climate change and pollution in the context of the mega-city of 16 million people that is Istanbul.
The Fulbright Scholarship 2020 Letter From The Director Mr. Taha Erdem Ozturk has been nominated as a principal finalist for the 2021-2022 Turkish Fulbright Student Program. Subject to successful placement, he is eligible for Fulbright funding up to a maximum amount of $50,000 which will be renewed for a second year of study, given that the student is in good academic standing, to cover study costs calculated at the Fulbright rate. Calculated study costs will take any university cost-sharing into account, and if the Fulbright calculated study costs are below the maximum grant amount, the finalist will only be eligible for the lesser amount. If you have any questions about Mr. Taha Erdem Ozturk’s Fulbright funding, you may contact the Turkish Fulbright Commission for further information. The Fulbright Student Program requires all grantees to return to their home countries upon the completion of their academic exchange activities in the United States.
