On-going work. In collaboration with Pooja Chordia Uttara Chockalingam
In the face of large-scale redevelopment and the conspicuous absence of a Heritage Act, the architectural identity of the city faces imminent and irreversible erasure. While change is inevitable, it must be premised on not just the circumstances of the ‘present’, but on the continuity of context that histories provide. It is in acknowledgement of this most pressing need, that the Vanishing Heritage Project was conceived. It is the endeavor of this Project to document current status of ‘heritage structures’, map their histories and superimpose them to create palimpsest of the architectural legacy of the city. The project specifically targets the neighborhoods of Mylapore and Royapettah, for their historical worth the localities predate the city of Chennai itself) and their extant but dwindling heritage treasures.
