social analogies the greyhound experiment final graduation project 2013 Script writing The process of writing/ scripting was documented and notated.
The starting point of the project is vaguely described in the brief as following: Through studies of the existing context of the river and its architectural relations with the city, and of cinematic media, we will develop proposals for a new architecture that connects the two sides of the river but also introduces new programmatic elements to it. By researching into the cinematic history of Newcastle, I established the starting point to be from the movie 'Get Carter' due to its importance in acknowledging the culture and lifestyle of the North-East in the 70's.
Through studies of the existing context of the river and its architectural relations with the city, and of cinematic media, I developed a proposal for a new architecture that connects the two sides of the river but also introduces new programmatic elements to it.
The first phase of the project was making a script which in the first instance incorporates the cinematic features of 'Get Carter' with the site through a series of connections and projections.
'There is no architecture without action, no architecture without event, no architecture without program. Rather than composing fictional events or sequences, it seemed more informative to act upon existing ones.' Get Carter - 1971, directed by Mike Hodges One of the first successful gangster movies to be based outside of London

Film sequences and notating the film stills
The cinematic function of the bridge traverses the programme in parallel and cross sections, creating a filming effect similar to muybridge's animal locomotion; through a series of analysis of the current filming element implemented in greyhound races, the positioning of the filming tracks or cameras is at times dictated by the programme and at times decided upon to reproduce the linear nature of the races
The film was visually dissected and analysed in a series of drawings and later reconfigured and recomposed into architectural language.

This process has been done using large models such as the wooden one shown on the left and by exploring various configuration to create spaces. The resulting shapes and forms are then modelled more delicately with card. A second process running in parallel with the 3d model making is tracing over the notations and models and exploring their spatiality in 2D.

The programme provides spaces for entertainment and performance, it tries to recreate the working mens clubs where the society would share each others’ joy and sadness.
Greyhounds - Over - Tyne The final product of the processes described is an ensemble of constructions, buildings which accommodate two parallel functions: greyhound racing track and the working mens club. The notation has been translated and transcripted as hidden elements within the design, in harmony with the programme to fulfill the requirements of space and inhabitation.

Sculptural interventions in the city
Once the notations went through interpretations/ reconfigurations, the final design was formed to respond to local needs and the requirements of the proposed brief.
