View From The Rim

By Mary Bennington / Executive Director

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. — John Muir

s fall flows into winter, this quote seems fitting! This autumn has provided so many beautiful crisp days with nature’s stunning display of fireworks in the trees and the deep blues only found in the depths of Tahoe. I hope you all got an opportunity to enjoy some time outdoors and reap the benefits of connecting with nature, wherever you are.

2012 was a year to remember! This year alone, nearly 800 volunteers dedicated over 17,000 hours both on and off the trail. More than 2,000 people participated in our trail use programs, including 800 youth from all over the region. Approximately 7.5 miles of new trail were built at the Daggett Summit Project, connecting Kingsbury North and South trailheads and adding a new connector trail to the urban trailhead located at the Van Sickle Bi-State Park in Stateline. We also completed 2.5 miles of trail connecting Galena Waterfall and Relay Ridge on the Rim to Reno project accessed from our Mt. Rose trailhead. In September I once again had the privilege of sharing the incredible journey of our Annual Thru Hike. Each step along the way offered stunning vistas, challenging passes, breath-taking lakes and, best of all, new friendships to last a lifetime. Whenever I spend time out on this “trail like no other” I feel gratitude for the efforts of the many volunteers who built it and continue to maintain it. And as this year draws to a close, I am again thankful for the opportunity to work with such generous volunteers, staff and board. Although we are facing the challenge of reduced state and federal funding for our projects, I’m confident that we will continue to accomplish our mission with the support of all of you - our members and partners!

I hope to see you out on the trail in 2013!

National Winter Trails Day – January 12th, 2013 Save the date and pray for snow! January 12th, 2013 marks the 18th annual National Winter Trails Day (NWTD). Join the Tahoe Rim Trail Association for a fun-filled day in the snow. Each year, thanks to the help of many Tahoe area community partners, the TRTA coordinates a wide variety of activities focused on safe and fun outdoor recreation during the winter season. Event highlights include snowshoe treks, cross country ski demonstrations, interpretive hikes, informational presentations, snow related games for the kids, raffle prizes, warm drinks and tasty snacks. This NWTD will be held on the north shore at the west end of Tahoe Meadows. Online registration will be available December 3rd, 2012 at www.tahoerimtrail.org. If you are interested in volunteering for this event or need more information, please contact Hayley Walker at (775) 298-0238 or programs@tahoerimtrail.org.

The Dirt on Trail Operations

Tahoe Rim Trail Association Officers and Directors

ith the last of our trail tools safely stowed away to hibernate until spring, our 2012 trail building and maintenance season has officially come to a close. As I reflect back on the season, the word tat keeps coming to mind is ‘thankful’. Here at the TRTA we are privileged to have had an incredible group of crew leaders who worked week in and week out (and in some cases day in and day out) around the Tahoe Basin to build and enhance the trail. We were also extremely fortunate to have the help and support of over 660 volunteers who spent some of their free time with us out on the trail moving rocks, widening tread, lopping brush, pulling out manzanita roots, hauling duff, and in general improving the trail. This season the TRTA assumed the massive undertaking of completing two major trail projects and also addressing critical maintenance needs. To accomplish all of this we held four workdays each week. Our crew leaders and volunteers rose to the occasion and met the challenge! Every scheduled work day was a success. Over the course of the summer and fall only one workday was cancelled and that was due to Mother Nature’s first snowfall of the year! We are truly blessed and enjoyed working with all of our volunteers. We hope you all come back for more next year! A final thank you this season goes to our partners! The folks at the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and Nevada State Parks helped tremendously this trail season with the planning, implementation, and celebration of our trail work.

2012 Accomplishments

O

n the Rim to Reno Project, accessed from the Mt. Rose Summit Trailhead, we built 2.5 miles of new single-track trail which connect the Galena Waterfall to the top of Relay Ridge. In the past, hikers on this section of trail had to walk on a dirt access road for approximately 4 miles.

At the south end of the lake, on the Daggett Summit Reroute Project, two major sections were completed. First, new trail connection between Kingsbury North and Kingsbury South, including the crossing of Hwy 207, now

allows users to stay on single track, enjoy many new vistas and avoid the 4 miles of paved roads! We also completed the Van Sickle Connector Trail. This important 3.5 mile section of trail provides access from the urban trailhead at the Van Sickle Bi-State Park located just south of the casinos in Stateline to the Tahoe Rim Trail at Kingsbury South. In addition, a reroute was completed at the Kingsbury South Trailhead; trail users no longer have to hike straight up the ski run in an area that is often wet and muddy late into the season and now have a beautiful forested trail. Maintenance work was completed on both Barker Pass North and Barker Pass South during the TRTA’s Backcountry Camps. Work north of Barker Pass focused on widening the trail, while work south of Barker Pass focused on repairing trail signage and removing encroaching brush. Other maintenance projects included work at Star Lake to remove logs that had jammed up at the outlet’s crossing, brushing and tread repair north of Spooner Summit, and the removal of over 100 downed trees by our talented and vigilant team of sawyers.

News For Next Season

N

ever a group to rest on our laurels, the Trail Operations Committee has already started to scope out our next trail season. For those of you waiting on pins and needles to hear about priorities for next year, here is a sneak peak! A main focus of our trail building time and talent will be dedicated to finishing the Daggett North East Loop. This loop trail is the final piece in the Daggett Summit Reroute Project! There is only about a mile of trail left, to create a 6.5 mile loop from the Kingsbury North Trailhead. The trail offers many scenic vistas and is a fantastic display of the talent of our crew! Other major priorities include repairing and replacing signage around the lake and working with a crew from the Student Conservation Association to address maintenance needs in Desolation Wilderness.

National Winter Trails Day & Public Snowshoe Treks

hile we can’t deny the truth of Edith Sitwell’s words – “winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth… for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home” – here at the TRTA we know there’s a lot more to winter than that! Winter is also challenging, invigorating and dazzling. We’re excited by an impending winter storm and ignited by a fresh, bluebird day. Enjoy Tahoe’s winter wonderland with us by joining any of our Winter Snowshoe Treks. Beginning with our outdoor family event “National Winter Trails Day” on January 12th, (see related article) we’ve lined up excursions into the backcountry for snowshoers of all abilities. On National Winter Trails Day we celebrate winter recreation in the Tahoe Basin, as well as promote winter safety. There will be many partnering organizations and businesses that help to make this fun day in the snow a huge success. Enjoy our “members only” Full Moon Snowshoes every month. Located at different locations around the basin, these guided snowshoe treks will give you an opportunity to adventure into the same forests you’ve grown to love during the summer, after they’ve been covered in a heavy blanket of snow. Visit our website to register your friends and family today (www.tahoerimtrail.org). And, for the braver souls, consider participating in Snow Camping 101. For more information about any of these activities, contact Tom by email at tomr@tahoerimtrail. org or phone at (775) 298-0285.

Recap of Summer Programs rom our office windows, you can see a stand of golden aspens across the street, shimmering in a chilly breeze. Every so often, one of these trees will drop a single leaf, and we’ll watch as it dances its way down to the pine needle covered ground. The autumn season promises time to rest and reflect. In the Trail Use department, we can’t help but look back upon the enormous successes achieved during the summer season.

F

Our volunteer guides, trail ambassadors and other dedicated volunteers and community partners supported more than 3,000 hours of programming – from Thru Hikes, Public Hikes and Segment Hikes, to Backpacking 101 and Ambassador Patrols. No wonder we were able to reach over 750 participants during this season alone! Participants were treated to Wildflower Walks and Geology Strolls, epic vistas and sweeping mountaintop panoramas. From the reports from our volunteers and staff 4

who assist out on the trail, this summer was full of achievement, exercise and camaraderie. This summer also saw incredible successes with our Youth Backcountry Camp (YBCC) programs. For the first time ever, we held 3-day, 5-day AND 6-day programs. Not only did we repeat the successes from previous years in the Mt. Rose Wilderness, but we also developed a new route through the alpine lakes and talus slopes of Desolation Wilderness. Reaching 37 teens and at-risk youth, this summer laid the foundation for even more expansive programming next summer. As winter storms begin to set their sights on Tahoe, the Trail Use department is hunkering down and preparing for our forthcoming snowshoe season. It won’t be long before Tahoe is under snow and our backcountry trails begin to work their magic on visitors once again.

What's all the talk about?

ave you joined in on the talks? More than 300 people have attended a Trail Talk in the Reno-Tahoe and Carson Valley areas in 2012. We hosted Trail Talks just about everywhere, including in homes of our members and volunteers, at three local libraries, the TRTA office and on the Tahoe Rim Trail itself. So what is a Trail Talk? These hour-long informational events are designed to get trail enthusiasts together to mingle, tell stories, enjoy refreshments, and share their visions

for the trail and association. Over the years we’ve found that, although most people know about the trail, not too many know about the Association or the many opportunities we offer to get people out using and maintaining this amazing resource! If you’d like to host a Trail Talk in your home or attend a Trail Talk in your area we’d like to hear from you! Contact Shannon at shannons@tahoerimtrail.org or visit the website for a full listing of upcoming Trail Talks.

Trail Story…

Hike your own hike. any of you sent us your stories from Around the Rim which we shared at our Annual Meeting in midOctober. We’d like to share an excerpt from Jeremy Gregersen’s Thru Hike story and a very valuable lesson he learned about hiking your own hike.

M

In a beautiful part of my trip around Tahoe, in the Desolation Wilderness, I met a 74-year-old grandmother who had already hiked over 1,000 miles from the Mexican border on the Pacific Crest Trail. Her ultimate destination was the Canadian border. Two years ago, she had solo hiked the 2,184-mile Appalachian Trail. When I asked her the secret to her endurance, she simply said, “You have to hike your own hike.” In hiking,

as in academics, or in life in general, one has to go at one’s own tempo, set and meet realistic goals, ignore the pace and preoccupations of the crowd, and most importantly, long-distance hikers and college-bound students alike must rely largely on their own determination to finish what they have so hopefully begun. Just as no one can hike your hike, so that you don’t have to, no one can gain for you the knowledge and wisdom that comes with determined academic effort. Jeremy is a Middle School Principal at The Meadows School in Las Vegas, NV. He Thru Hiked the TRT this summer and is 165 mile club member #1289.

We would like to thank our 2012 Business & Corporate Members who’ve invested in the future of the Tahoe Rim Trail!

165 Mile Club Members of 2012 Congratulations to all of you who completed the Tahoe Rim Trail in 2012! Some of you took your time to accomplish this goal, completing the trail in segments over several years. Many of you completed the trail as a thru hike, some finishing in only several days, others at a leisurely pace over a couple of weeks. Our hope is that, whatever your approach to completing the trail, the experience enriched your life, expanded your appreciation of the amazing beauty of the Lake Tahoe area, and 1274 . 1275 . 1276 . 1277 . 1278 . 1279 . 1280 . 1281 . 1282 . 1283 . 1284 . 1285 . 1286 . 1287 . 1288 . 1289 . 1290 . 1291 . 1292 . 1293 . 1294 . 1295 . 1296 . 1297 . 1298 . 1299 . 1300 . 1301 . 1302 . 1303 . 1304 . 1305 . 1306 . 1307 . 1308 .
