One way in which Samantha and Alyssa have learned the values of stewardship is through their involvement with the National Parks’ Junior Ranger Program. Each year, the Phorests visit a different National Park and the girls complete a host of activities which teach them about their natural surroundings and how they can protect and preserve these special places. To date, they’ve completed over 100 Junior Ranger Parks programs. As a result, the girls have begun to take ownership of the places they visit; especially the Tahoe Rim Trail. This year, Samantha and Alyssa have decided to become TRTA Ambassadors along with John and Angela. Together they will make their way around the Tahoe Rim Trail sharing the importance of Leave No Trace Wilderness Ethics and assisting other trail users. When asked why trails and the outdoors mean so much to them the girls respond, “We get to see cool things in the wilderness and we’re able to spend time with our family.” 6

We had the pleasure of meeting this young and vibrant family in 2014 when they took on the 2014 Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge. Hiking and the outdoors has always played an important role in their family. Ever since their girls were toddlers, John and Angela have made it a priority to expose Alyssa and Samantha to the great outdoors. Since then, they’ve been instilling the values of stewardship in their girls and it’s paying off!

Summer 2015 Volunteer Guide

Leave your mark on the legacy of one of the greatest trail systems in the world by volunteering with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association.

National Trails Day To mark the 23rd Annual National Trails Day the Tahoe Rim Trail Association is pulling out all the stops. June 6th will be an all hands on deck type of day with trailbuilding, guided hikes, outreach events, and the Trail Challenge Kick Off. National Trails Day is the country’s largest celebration of trails sponsored by the American Hiking Society. For our 2015 celebration, we have moved back to the South Shore of Lake Tahoe and are partnering with the City of South Lake Tahoe to promote the fantastic trail system in the Tahoe Basin we are privileged to call our backyard! The TRTA will have events based out of Explore Tahoe in the Heavenly Village and the VanSickle Bi State Park. For more information about National Trails Day or to sign up for our volunteer trail building project or one of our two guided hikes please visit tahoerimtrail.org.

Work Days

Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from June 6th through October 15th the TRTA’s volunteer trail crews will be out building and maintaining the Tahoe Rim Trail. Please consider giving back to the trail you love by joining their illustrious ranks and digging in to ensure the Tahoe Rim Trail remains a world class trail for future generations. Workdays are a great way to burn some calories, learn new skills, meet new people, and experience new places on the TRT. No experience is necessary! Information on project locations and registration is available at www.tahoerimtrail.org.

Backcountry Camps

Camp out with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association! Summer on the Tahoe Rim Trail would not be complete without our world famous Backcountry Trail Camps. Volunteers spend two to three days working on the trail and enjoying nights out under the stars. This year the TRTA has several options for folks looking to camp

out with us including two basic campouts near Snow Valley Peak in July, two of our traditional ‘Cadillac’ versions of Backcountry Camps near Armstrong Pass in August, and one overnight backpacking trail project in September. For all of these events the Tahoe Rim Trail and our fantastic volunteer camp cooks will be providing all of the meals. Pre-registration is required for these free events. For more information or to register visit our website.

Camp Cooks

If you are like us, you get hangry if not well fed! To keep all of our backcountry campers happy and working hard on the trail we enlist the support of volunteer cooks. Volunteer cooks can fill a range of roles from simply showing up and cooking meals at camp to taking the reins and planning, shopping, prepping, and leading others in the camp kitchen. Whatever your interest and skill level, we’ll train and support you with whatever you need. Volunteer camp cooks are the most important (and appreciated) person at camp, please consider joining us! For more information please contact Justine at justinel@tahoerimtrail.org.

Thru Hike Trail Angels

If you have experienced meeting a Trail Angel while on an extended backcountry trip, then you know the joy of a water resupply after miles of dry trail or taste of fresh fruit after days in the backcountry! TRTA’s team of amazing Trail Angels provides this support to our two annual Thru Hikes. Join our team and be that friendly face that provides our Thru Hikers with fresh food, cold beverages, and news from the outside world. For more information email Lindseys@tahoerimtrail.org.
