An Artisan Tradition Since 1956
Tai Ping was founded in British Hong Kong in 1956 by brothers Lawrence and Horace Kadoorie and a group of international friends with the noble aims of developing industry and providing employment to migrant workers. While a small textile presence existed in the colony before Tai Ping, it was entrepreneurial Chinese refugees who modernised the industry with advanced equipment and expertise.
During this time, many international companies were setting up operations in Hong Kong, so it’s fitting that Tai Ping’s founding Board reflected the colony’s most prominent immigrant communities – Chinese, European and American – with the Kadoorie brothers acting as a bridge between them.
A humble 2-storey villa was the original home of Tai Ping, but a purpose-built factory soon followed as demand increased from around the world.
For more than six decades, Tai Ping has celebrated the philanthropic values of its founders by upholding a tradition of compassion for employees and community.
The Artistry of Tai Ping
The complexity of Tai Ping creations calls for exceptional artisanal skills. The standard of excellence that has defined the Tai Ping brand since 1956 is evidence not only in the company’s exquisitely handcrafted products but also in the spirit and commitment of its workers at all levels of design and execution.
On a daily basis, Tai Ping artisans transform the most complicated custom designs into works of art that exceed the expectations of discerning customers worldwide. Tai Ping’s ethos of community, longevity and employee care began in the company’s first workshop in 1956 and it proudly continues today.
Choose Responsibly
Operating ethically and responsibly have been a cornerstone of Tai Ping’s guiding principles since its founding in 1956, where caring for people and respecting the environment have always gone hand in hand.
Company-owned manufacturing facilities not only operate under rigorous sustainability standards, but they also offer a safe, enriching atmosphere for employees. True compassion for the wellbeing of people extends beyond the workplace to include families, communities and the world. Tai Ping invests the same level of care in creating its bespoke, artisanal products as it does in managing natural resources and safeguarding its employees and associates.
Tai Ping demands the highest ethical and environmental standards throughout its global business operations and within its supply chain, and strongly encourages customers to do the same. Choosing responsibly means making informed, responsible buying decisions.

Custom-Tufted
Tai Ping is renowned globally for its exceptional skill and craftsmanship in creating custom-tufted carpets.
During Tai Ping’s early years in Hong Kong, the company developed the first motorized hand tufting gun which forever changed the way carpets were made throughout the industry. Over the decades, this tradition of innovation has continued with Tai Ping technicians, engineers and artisans continually testing and perfecting a wide range of new techniques and technologies. Innovation, combined with unparalleled handicraft skills passed from one generation to the next, enable the company to bring each designer’s vision to life in amazing multi-dimensional carpets.
Teams of Tai Ping tufters work on carpets of varying complexities, but only the most experienced artisans – with the highest level of training and experience – will be called upon to create the most intricate carpet designs.
Pass-Tufted
Like other tufted constructions, tufts are inserted into a backing material to create pass-tufted carpets. However, instead of using a single needle to stitch one tuft at a time, the pass machine has an 18-inch row of needles – usually about 8-10 needles per inch. The backing material is fed through the machine to create a long strip or pass of tufted carpet, and the passes are created side-by-side. One pass of plain cut-pile or plain loop-pile carpet is 18 inches wide.
Pass-tufted carpets are produced through a semi-manual process that works on the same principles as broadloom machine tufting. Passtufted carpet is built up in strips or ‘passes’, so it is especially suited to long narrow rooms, corridors and irregular shaped rooms or spaces. Passtufted carpets are also a good choice for spaces requiring very wide carpet, up to 19 metres. The pass machine can be programmed to leave spaces during the tufting process so carpet can be made to fit around pillars or odd shapes, thereby minimizing yarn wastage while reducing the need to join pieces of carpet together.
Whether adorning a private residence, a luxury hotel or a high-end boutique store, pass-tufted designs deliver an unbroken landscape of soft, consistent texture to offer an enhanced sensation of space.
Broadloom and Tiles
Broadloom carpet is produced by machines that insert thousands of yarn tufts per minute into a mesh of non-woven primary backing. The machines are similar in size to a woven-jacquard loom, but they work like a domestic sewing machine. Across the width of the machine there are horizontal bars with hundreds of needles, each threaded with one end of yarn. The needles are fed yarn from creels or from a beam located behind the machine.
Tai Ping’s high-end Broadloom carpet is a luxury product that offers a reliable level of durability and good acoustic insulation. High-end Broadloom carpet can be cut pile, loop pile or a mixture of the two, but design options and colour options are more limited than with woven or hand-tufted carpets.
Tai Ping’s high-end Broadloom can also be cut as carpet tiles. Tiles are easy to transport and install, making them suitable for replacing carpet in occupied office spaces. Carpet tiles can be easily lifted to access underfloor cabling and technology, or to replace stained and damaged tiles. Tai Ping’s wool carpet tile products have an attached cushion backing so there is no need to purchase underlay.
