Presented project was made in my final year. It is a luxury home for the elderly.

Before I started putting together a project I’ve been thinking a lot about contemporary social values (mainly related to residence of individuals.) I have been asking myself what a luxurious means today. So I came to realization that if material values were more relevant in the past (especially during and after the time of world wars), space as a value replaced that values (known architects Lacaton & Vassal emphasize that the space and in particular the spaciousness are of the utmost importance for the modern person). Now, in my opinion, modern man, in the time of fluidity and fast flow of life, sees especially peace and tranquillity as a value (especially prominent for the elderly). In this manner I design a structure which enables different more and less intimate ambiences.
This project is located on the edge of urban tissue of Ljubljana. The duality of location dictates that the facility fits in the urban tissue on one hand and corresponds with the natural environment and terrene on the other.

Concept The public program of the home for elderly, as a transparent base, is placed to the foot of the hill and over it wood lamellas of residential units are positioned. The structure is designed in a way that space uninterruptedly flows true and above it.

In the transparent part of the building, which is oriented towards the city side, different facilities of the home for the elderly are found and arranged around the public atrium. Above it, near the main road the room are placed on the other side of the building, across the park, apartments for elderly are set.

Volumes are different by the materials. Transparent base is made with mainly concrete construction, wrapped in white transparent fabric. The construction of the lamellas is made from prefabricated wooden walls (the system of the enterprise Jelovica is adopted). The skin around it is a texture made from wooden panels (in which knitted rods are inserted.) The density of the panel is correlated to the function set behind the skin. For this project also physical model of the detail 1:1 has been required (of wooden panel in my case), which is (as our ‘Studio design’ is not yet finished) still under construction.

This project aims to heighten people’s awareness of the natural elements in barren city settings. This skin absorbs and filters the natural elements of wind, rain and sun into the space. The shelter creates a sensual experience. The project returns one’s thinking to the fundamental requirements of Architecture. In a sense, juxtaposed to current high-tech building design, the project may be viewed more as an art installation. It is a hands on experience of passive design.

The shelter will be located in a busy square, neglected side alley or sidewalk. The main goal is to introduce new calm zones within the fast paced city environment.

Influence It is interesting to discuss here, the process and research that was undertaken to reach this final design. Animal skins were investigated initially. The underlying mechanical and structural principles of the barnacle and crab were looked at more specifically for this project. The different components were separated and categorised producing various models for interpretation. These principles were then reintegrated and translated into an architecture.

Structure The design has triangulated aluminium framed structure. The supportive columns are extensions of this frame.

The protective layer of the skin (the roof) is made up of a series of diamond plates. The overall structure is made up of alternating ventilation and water models.

Beneath the diamonds a membrane is placed, which also forms the water collection sacks. These are attached at three corners to the structure by ropes. The ropes follow the seams of the sack and cause it to twist/unravel. This idea was derived from the formation of a flower.

Process empty Water is transferred via the diamond plates. The diamonds are fixed to aluminium rods with pin joints. As the amount of the water increases, the diamond will rotate and the water will be transferred. The wind enters every second unit between the diamond formations. It is predicted that in strong winds the diamonds will produce an interesting spectacle. Beneath each ventilation opening there is a suspended waterproof membrane that transfers excess water to the sacks. Under water modules sacks are placed. The sacks are made up of small components. In the centre of each component there is a hole in the waterproof material. The inner layer of a polymer material, is revealed. As water builds up in the sack the polymer material stretches. The fibres become more separated and water is released. The water is released into the space after longer period.

This project was made for the national public competition. Our aim was to design primary school, which includes nine different classes. In my opinion, that educational institutions should express certain amount of repression. In this manner buildings for educational institutions should be conceived as very clear and regular structures often functionally arranged. However, on the other hand this buildings are often pupils’ other home that is why they should also be pleasant. Buildings of this kind could be especially playful in their informal functional divisions, like in halls, lobbies, dining rooms, etc.

Also required function contributed to the composition of this building. A division of the primary volume is a result of formatting the necessary function assemblies and their prominent connections within the school complex. A play of sequences is perceived when we are marching through the main communication; the rhythm of masses and voids is established.

Material dialogue is established with a contraposition of more rigid building volumes and their connections. Rigid masses of envelope of the school programme are clasping more soft and playful forms of in-between space.

Ravnikar’s pavilion (third year, second semester) A few years ago there was a reunion of the birth one of the most prominent Slovenian architect Edvard Ravnikar. For this occasion our aim was to design a pavilion which would hold an exhibition of his work. Our aim was not just to design a pavilion on its own, but to make a connection between Ravnikar’s existing works, his exhibition and the context of the place. This building is located on the edge of the main park of Ljubljana called Tivoli (the location of the pavilion was determinate in advance). The geometry of the pavilion drives from the existing urban elements.

Body The shape of the pavilion works as a funnel, it redirects people from the transit underpass and leads them to more calm, solitary area. 88: pointed view
The pavilion is functionally divided into two parts. In the first underground there is held an exhibition of an old plans and documents. In the second, brighter part there are positioned obstacles that are not sensitive to daylight. The whole exhibition is conceived as a path that leads the observer true the life of the famous architect. It starts with his oldest work and finished it with his youngest one. At the end the observer is heldin front of the non passable glass barrier and his view is directed towards the factual exhibit - Ravnikar’s first creation.

Bones The shell of pavilion is made from concrete, also large concrete roof platforms are carried by steel beams. It is not the only function of those beams to span the great expanse, they are also skylights inserted in the beams. As we travel true layers of exhibition, the beams are getting thinner, the platforms are becoming smaller and our expectation is increasing. Expectation is emphasised also with the element of light, which leads us until the end.

Modular social housing (third year, first semester) A great problem in nowadays society is a bad quality of living circumstances and increased prices that one needs to pay in order to achieve an adequate dwelling. This problem is particularly prominent among the people with a lower income, as well as among young couples and young families. 103: privat exterior space as a value

The private exterior space largelycontributes to the quality of residence; therefore the horizontal building structure of terraced houses is more desirable then classic vertical block of flats. Terraced houses are also beneficial from urbanistic strand of view. Contemporary society is very flexible structure, therefore it is hard to satisfy individual’s desire, which are changing true his life period. Deriving from these principles a design for modular social housing was conceived.

Phases phase 1 In this project there was an association with a well known Slovenian company Jelovica, which is producing prefabricated wooden houses. This system enables rapidly generation of flexible structure. In an association with the company a new patent was developed. This social housing works as a modular growing formation. While the base of the structure remains unmodified the additional modules are adopted to the individual’s needs. The example represents one scenario of possible growing house. At first a basic loft for a couple is established. As the family is growing also the house is enlarging. The lofts, in which more public functions are adopted, comprise a row along the main road. Perpendicular to the base along the main communication different private rooms are added.

Perception The house is wrapped in a horizontal wooden texture. The envelope allows the wooden construction to accomplish its natural function and to breathe through time.
