Detroit Scholarship Foundation https://takechargefoundation.org/events/retreat/ On June 26, 2015, the Battier Take Charge Foundation hosted their first Weekend Retreat for scholarship recipients. Thirteen Take Charge scholars from around the country, including those currently receiving scholarships and who have already earned their degrees, were invited to Shane and Heidi’s lake house in Michigan, where they were treated to a weekend full of personal and professional development activities. The idea began as a way to get to know the students better, while providing them with additional support and resources to achieve their goals. The Foundation feels strongly about extending their relationships with and investment in their scholars, far beyond the financial support they are awarded as part of the program. Along with time spent building relationships with one another, the group participated in workshops with a life coach and college professors, and engaged in roundtable discussions with professionals from numerous fields, who also shared meals and experiences with them. The Scholars had a chance to have their stories heard, questions answered, and dreams encouraged, both from the Take Charge team and the outstanding group of leaders who came to facilitate the various sessions. On top of the structured sessions, the entire group had time to let loose and just enjoy being together. Game night and a sunset boat cruise on the lake were highlights. And of course, no experience with the Take Charge team would be complete without some karaoke! The crew showed off their vocal talents – or lack thereof? – with a late night singing session on the Battiers’ prized As the group said their goodbyes on Sunday, plans were already underway for a second retreat. Our goal is to host a weekend for the ever-growing contingent of Take Charge Scholars every other summer, to continue to
foster their growth and build deep, lasting relationships. If this first experience is any indication, the retreat program will become an invaluable element of the Take Charge Foundation scholarships.
