Electricity and Circuits – Class 6, Science 1. Define a circuit. Draw the labeled diagram and its different components. Ans. A circuit is a path along which an electric current passes. It consists of several different electrical components, which are listed below:
There is a cell or a battery in the circuit used as a source of electric current.
There is an electric switch used to regulate the flow of current. It is also called the ‘key.’ The current flows in the circuit when the switch is ‘on,’ and it does not flow when the switch is ‘off.’ A bulb is connected to the circuit to confirm the current flow. The circuit is complete when it lights up, indicating that the current flows.
On the other hand, when the bulb does not glow, the circuit is said to be incomplete, i.e., the current is not flowing.
An essential component of the circuit is the connecting wire, which connects all the circuit components to make the current flow.
2. Discuss open and closed circuits with the help of diagrams. Ans. A circuit gets called closed when it is complete in every way, meaning that its connections are intact. The current passes through it after turning it on, and the bulb illuminates. Electricity And Circuits – closed circuits
When connections are not intact, i.e., broken, a circuit is considered open or not complete. The bulb does not light up when the switch gets turned on in an open circuit. It indicates that there is no current flowing in the circuit. It may get caused by damaged wires or a circuit with improperly connected components. Electricity And Circuits – open circuits
3. Discuss various protection precautions and procedures when electrical appliances are in use. Ans. Electricity is beneficial to humans. It has improved the quality of our lives by making them more enjoyable, luxurious, and convenient. On the other hand, it can be just as dangerous. It can result in serious accidents, injuries, and even

death. As a result, it is advisable to take the following precautions and safety measures when using electrical appliances: 1. Never touch electrical switches or gadgets when any body part is moist. 2. Wear rubber hand gloves and stand on a dry wooden or plastic platform if any repair work on any electrical items needs to get done. 3. Playing with electrical sockets or cables is never a good idea. 4. In the event of a short circuit or a spark in a switch, use a plastic or wooden stick to turn off the main switch quickly. 5. Never use water to put out a fire caused by electric lines. Turn off the power, then extinguish the fire using dry sand.
Now that we know so much about electricity and circuits, let’s test our knowledge by answering a few quick questions. 1. Fill in the blanks: 1. 1. __________ is the device used to break an electric circuit. 2. There are __________ terminals in an electric cell. 3. An electric bulb has a ___________ that is connected to its terminals. 4. __________ is two (or more) cells combination.
2. State True/False: 1. 1. The bulb is the source of electricity in an electric circuit. 2. A sheet of thermocol may carry an electric current. 3. Paper is an excellent electrical conductor. 4. Metals allow electric current to pass through them. 5. In place of metal wires, circuit may be created with a jute thread.
