What is a noun? A noun is any word used to describe or refer to a person, place, animal, things etc. We can use a verb in the form of a noun too. Example – Anjali is doing the activity of dancing.
Here, the word dancing is used to describe the activity that Anjali is doing. Dancing is generally used as a verb such as “He is dancing.” This proves that a verb can be used as a noun too.
Similarly, a pronoun can also be used as a noun. Example – He is going to the playground. www.takshilalearning.com

Here, ‘he’ is a pronoun but it is also a person, and a noun is a word that refers to a person. This proves that a pronoun can be used as a noun too.
Examples of nouns are – Ajay, people, Ram, Sita, tiger, tree, plant, field, Russia, India, etc.
What are the types of nouns? There are the following types of nouns: 1. Proper nouns 2. Common nouns 3. Abstract nouns 4. Concrete nouns 5. Countable nouns 6. Uncountable nouns 7. Collective nouns 8. Compound nouns
What is a proper noun? Proper nouns are nouns that describe or refer to a unique person, animal or thing. The easiest way to spot a proper noun is to trace a capital letter in the beginning of a word.
Example 1 – Radha is singing a song.
Here, the word that starts with a capital letter is Radha. It is also a unique name given to a person as not everyone is Radha. Therefore, Radha is a proper noun.

Example 2 – I was driving to the Himalayas.
Here, there are two capital words but the only unique thing in the sentence is the name of the mountain range called Himalayas. Since it is unique, it also starts with a capital letter and hence, is termed as a proper noun.
What is a common noun? A common noun is a noun that applies to a large number of items, people, or locations. It refers to a specific type of product, person, or location.
Example 1 – Radha is singing a song.
Here the word Radha is a proper noun but the word ‘song’ is a common noun.
Example 2 – I was driving to the hills.
Here, there is no unique word starting with a capital letter and the location being discussed is also general and does not mention any specific names. Therefore, it is termed as a common noun.
How do we differentiate between a common noun and a proper noun?
Let’s take the same example as above – Radha is singing a song.
If we would have mentioned the name of the song she is singing, it would have been a proper noun but if we just point out that a song is being sung, then it becomes a common noun.
Identify the common nouns and proper nouns in the following sentences:
