Welcome to the 47th Annual 2017-2018 Northern California Area Emmy® Awards Gala. This evening celebrates our chapter’s broadcast excellence and professional camaraderie. We congratulate the 531 individual nominees. Truly, work awarded an Emmy® statuette by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) attests an outstanding achievement. Tonight, we honor the most talented journalists and media crafts people in this region. As Local Chapter president, I am proud to represent vibrant professionals in Northern California, Reno, and Hawaii. Emmy® Gala Chair Uilani Gray has reprised her role as organizer of this event. Thank you to Chapter Award Committee Chair Wayne Freedman and the National Award Chair Linda Giannecchini. They have guided the long and rigorous competition that culminates tonight. My special appreciation goes to Patty Zubov, Luis Godinez, Keith Sanders and Kevin Wing, who secured sponsors and marketed the Gala. As always, a special salute to our longtime Executive Director Darryl Compton, He manages the countless details that go into making this event. This dazzling night depends on the many outstanding resources of our Emmy® Gala Committee. Thank you for all your hours of phone calls, emails, meetings, site surveys, and plain hard work. I hope you have a wonderful evening. Tonight is special because you have made it special. Your toil, labor, and dedication to excellence contribute to this great occasion. We come here, our most important event of the year, because of, and to honor you. Have a great evening. Steve Shlisky

The San Francisco/Northern California Chapter annually honors outstanding individual, news and program achievements in Northern California, Hawaii and Reno. There can be one award, more than one award, or no award presented in each category. Our chapter had a record year for entries from 2017. The English contest had 784 entries in 62 categories. The Spanish contest had 218 entries in 42 categories.

Entrants submitted and uploaded their work on-line through EmmyÂŽ Express. This year, our judges represented NATAS chapters in Boston/New England, Chicago/Midwest, Heartland (Denver), Lone Star (Texas), Mid-Atlantic (Philadelphia), and the Sun Coast (Miami). A minimum of seven peers scored each entry for content, creativity, and execution. Each was worth 10 points, for a maximum total of 30. In craft categories, judges scored for creativity and execution only, with 20 being a perfect mark. After viewing all entries in a category, every judge certified his or her scores and submitted the ballot directly to our accountant for processing. Later, that accountant provided The Awards Committee with a tabulated sheet containing columns of scores, each representing a category. The committee determined nominees based on national guidelines for excellence. They awarded statuettes to the highest scores or, in rare cases, more than one exceptionally deserving score. At no time did the Awards Committee know which categories they were considering. They nominated 218 entries in the English contest, and 81 entries for the Spanish.

Vocalist Marina Crouse
Marina Crouse is one of the most notable rising talents on the San Francisco/Bay Area music scene. Her early classical training is reflected in her powerful and versatile vocal style that creates a genuine excitement in every performance. Blessed with an incredibly expressive voice early in life, Marina Crouse applies her distinctive talents to a wide range of material while delivering an emotional authenticity that consistently cuts deep. “When I sing,” she says, “I feel like I break myself open and let a little piece of myself come out. I’m reaching out to people with hopes to connect on a personal level. And when we do, that to me is better than anything else.”

Emmy® Etiquette Congratulations, 2018 Emmy® nominees! Your gala committee needs your help in streamlining an inevitably long show. 1. We will announce category recipients simultaneously. When you hear your name, please enter the stage from audience left. There, Mr. or Ms. Emmy will present you with a statuette and direct you to your podium. When you conclude, we will drop your lights and illuminate recipients at the second podium. After they finish, Mr. and Ms. Emmy will escort you from the stage.
2018 Induction Luncheon Saturday, October 20, Park Central, SF
2. Each nominee has submitted the name of a designated spokesperson. When the host announces a recipient, he or she will introduce him or her. If your spokesperson is a no-show, another qualified party may accept the statuette in their place. Other named, receiving parties may join your spokesperson on the stage, but please, no additional speeches. 3. If you did not submit a spokesperson, then the host will simply announce the award recipient and move on to the next category. 4. We will limit all speeches to 30 seconds. After that, the musicians will begin to play and your podium lights will dim. Don’t get caught doing pantomime in the dark. 5. If you have already given a speech or are not the designated spokesperson, we will not turn on the microphone. 6. Please note that the statuette you receive on stage has no names on it, and will not be the one you take home. Please return it after we escort you from the podium. 7. From backstage after your speech, we will take you to the Red Carpet where you will receive and sign for your engraved statuette. Talk as long as you like while we interview you for the Webcast and take your formal picture. 8. After that, you’re free!

“Jet Ski Getaway” Giveaway
Visit
Awards shows are long. Even the Oscars show earlier this year made an attempt to shorten the show by offering a shiny green Jet Ski to the person with the shortest acceptance speech! Plus a stay at the Day’s Inn at Arizona’s Lake Havasu… Tonight, our Emmy® Awards show is borrowing that idea: the shortest speech tonight wins, not a jet ski — but a “Jet Ski Getaway” — at our own Lake Tahoe! Up for grabs: Jet Ski rentals for one hour for you and three friends - thanks to High Sierra Waterski School. AND, dinner lakeside at the Sunnyside Restaurant. AND (our accommodations are a little classier): two rooms, two nights at the European-style Granlibakken Resort Tahoe. You must be present to win. When your name is called, if you’re not at your seat, you may have gone home with a statuette, but without the Grand Prize of a Jet Ski adventure for four, dinner for four, and 2 nights’ stay at North Lake Tahoe!

The Governors’ Award: Victor Lee Presented by Wayne Freedman Reporter KGO ABC 7 (Silver Circle 2002) ABC7 reporter Vic Lee is more than a Northern California institution. San Francisco journalists universally regard him as the most eminent dean of their craft. Decades ago, Vic set a such a high standard of excellence that most professionals can only aspire to it. Vic’s journalistic genes run deep. He is bi-lingual, having been born in Shanghai and raised in Tokyo. He is the son of a well-known correspondent, author, and television commentator who was assigned to Japan during the occupation after World War II. His mother was an actor in Chinese opera. Vic graduated from San Jose State University, interned with the New York Times, spent two years with United Press International, spent 34 years with KRON-TV, and has been with ABC7 since 2006. Vic has covered the Charles Manson trial, Richard Nixon in the Western White House, The Philippine Revolution, Hong Kong’s handover, the Kobe earthquake, The 1988 Olympics in Korea, and made many trips to Japan where he reported on business, education, and social issues for KRON and the NBC News Channel. He says his most memorable and grueling trip was a month-long assignment to Sudan and Ethiopia, touring refugee camps and documenting the African Famine and Civil War. At ABC7, Vic has redefined and re-invented the crime beat. Vic Lee is to San Francisco television news what Tony Bennett is to its music. Yes, he deserves the Governor’s Award. It is also true that the Governor’s Award deserves him.

The Governors’ Citation: Kim Stephens Kopi Sotiropulos Presenter Jim Turpin News Director KMPH Fox 26
the Fresno market. She is an Emmy Award recipient and a proud member of the prestigious NATAS Silver Circle. Kim received the Governors’ Service Medallion in 2017. She also teaches news writing at Fresno State, and Catechism at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Clovis. “Waking up at 2:00 a.m. is not a joy, I’ll be honest. But I love being off by noon so I can help inspire and teach our future broadcasters, and get to my boys’ basketball and baseball games. I’m always tired, but working on such a fun show in the morning is a kick. I learn something new every day. Working with a nice, creative crew makes it all worthwhile!” Kopi Sotiropulos of KMPH Fox 26 admits that he got into television news because his wife told him he needed a steady job. At the time, it seemed a logical move for an actor who had spent ten years in Hollywood. Kopi majored in broadcasting at San Francisco State University, then found work at KMPH in Visalia the very same month that station began broadcasting. He wrote copy, produced, shot, edited, performed in commercials and promos, and hosted Dialing for Dollars. “I never gave away as much as Regis does, but my jackets were more exciting than his,” says Kopi. Then, the Hollywood bug bit. Kopi worked with Eddie Murphy, David Letterman, Michael Keaton, Mary Tyler Moore, Bill Bixby, Goldie Hawn, Michael Landon, Linda Evans, David Jansen---the list goes on. Or, maybe we have it backwards. Those people can say they worked with Kopi Sotiropulos, who gave up Hollywood to become Fresno’s most beloved weatherman. That’s impressive for an immigrant from the Peloponnesian Peninsula of Greece who came to this country not knowing a word of English. “Start your day with a smile,’ Kopi likes to say. Once you meet him, it is impossible to imagine his face without one.
K
im Stephens is a television marathoner. With Kopi Sotiropulos, she broadcasts more than five hours each morning on Great Day at Fox 26 in Fresno. Kim and Kopi are Fresno fixtures. Like many media professionals, Kim began her career as a nomad. After graduating from Chico State University in 1988, she started at KERO in Bakersfield, worked at KERN radio, then moved to WBIR and WVLT in Knoxville, Tennessee. While there, she earned a Masters Degree. Kim moved back to KNTV in 2000, spent time reporting technology, business, and anchoring on weekends. She signed on at Fox 26 in 2003, and has anchored Great Day since 2003. Kim serves on the NATAS Board of Governors as Vice President for
