Gender equality and mental health are at the forefront of our plans in the construction industry So much more can be done, but it’s about finding the resources and best ways to implement that With regards to gender equality, we’re starting to see more and more companies offer maternity leave not only for the primary care person, but the secondary care person as well which is a huge move forward in construction We’re also starting to see companies place a high importance on health and wellbeing programs to support workers mental health I can foresee a lot more happening in these spaces in the future
I value having opportunities to continuously learn new skills, knowing that I’m able to develop my knowledge further and further each day
What working schedule enables you to perform at your best?
I loved every minute of working there but due to a small HR team, there wasn’t enough progression beyond the role I was already in That’s when I connected with Talentpath to help me get to that next level of my career

It was not long after finishing my degree that I entered the corporate workforce as a HR Coordinator for a hotel group Although I had my degree, it was the hands-on experience working in hospitality that made me a standout candidate for the employer I was thrown into the deep end very quickly thanks to COVID, but it also meant I had experience learning a variety of new things in a fast-paced environment
I also love that CV Services values the importance of training and bringing up the next generation through apprenticeship and trainee programs We have quite a few employees that have started with us as apprentices and are now in management roles This strong focus creates a great working environment where everyone supports each other
What unique benefits or initiatives in a workplace do you value? Something so simple as having free breakfast and coffee always available is life changing Not only is it convenient and cost-effective, but having a cafeteria gives you a chance to chat with colleagues you might not have otherwise Also being paid the market rate is an underrated yet important factor that I really value If you could travel back to the beginning of your career and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be? I sort of fell into Human Resources; it wasn’t something I set out to do at first I was studying Mechanical Engineering, and a short-term opportunity came up through a friend of a friend in maritime services for their HR team
A hybrid work model is a standard expectation these days, but what I value more in 2022 is collaborative engagement with my team, face-toface Humans are social creatures, we thrive off connection, so frequent social events and initiatives are always a great idea in a workplace
From that one experience, I decided to drop out of my Engineering degree and complete my undergraduate degree in Business instead

I had the privilege of working in the UK for some global organisations in my early twenties before moving back to Brisbane where I started working at a national infrastructure services company I was working within their blasting team during a period of high growth, so it was a lot of fun I moved on to the world’s largest heavy vehicle machinery group before having the opportunity to join Ingenia Communities (Ingenia) I certainly feel like I’ve found a really great home in Ingenia It’s a very familyfriendly, value-based company that truly cares about its customers and employees
What is the best part of being a People and Culture Manager? I love being able to partner with a business, focusing on building strategies and coaching opportunities with my peers and leadership team It always comes back to the people and how I can really help them excel and exceed in the best way for them
For me having opportunities outside of my day-to-day role to explore things that you’re interested in outside of your job scope is special
How did you get into Human Resources?
We are already seeing it in the HR space, but we are moving away from a technical approach and more towards a people-focused approach to HR

After graduating with my degree in Human Resources Management, I started working for an agricultural recruitment and HR services company for just over a year It was a fantastic opportunity to learn the ins and outs of both recruitment and HR in a consultancy capacity After moving into another role specialising in workers’ compensation, I soon realised that I wanted to get into the generalist HR space and was lucky enough to land a role at a national car hire company Pretty quickly after landing that role I was offered another role at a scale-up business, where I built the HR function from the ground up
Knowing I have had a positive impact on the people, and they are going to have a positive impact on the business moving forward

I was a high school dropout at a very early age so it was important for me to regain traction in my life and make something of myself Having a young daughter, it was also equally as important that I be a great role model and mentor from a young age I kept persistent with my goals and attitude, landing my first corporate role at the head office of a bank in New Zealand I had an impressive career there, starting as a Junior and leaving the bank as a Senior Product Manager 12 years later After spending more than a decade in a banking environment, I was curious to see what else was out there I proceeded to move into mortgage lending, sales, and high-level operational management roles before connecting with Talentpath for my first contract role Initially, I came on board just to help with a project for 6 weeks, but they didn’t want me to leave I then embarked on a National Sales Enablement position and took over all the projects at the time I later moved into Business Development Management before taking some time off for myself to recoup and reset When I decided to reenter the workforce, I connected with Talentpath again and started a temporary role as a Relationship Manager at a national membership-based organisation It turned into a permanent position, and I quickly progressed from Relationships Manager to Regional Manager within a year I moved onto a pivotal role at a state hospitality body that changed the trajectory of my career This experience progressed me in ways I never thought it could, being able to connect with so many great people whilst finding my passion for hospitality and entertainment Unfortunately, due to COVID I was made redundant, but I left knowing I had found a lifelong passion that would help shape the future of my career Now I’m at Entertainment Group as their Business Development & Partnership Manager – QLD Being amongst the industry I love, having conversations with people I care about and helping businesses grow and flourish is really the perfect combination for me I lucked out!

When COVID hit in 2020 it really changed the workforce landscape for a lot of people in a negative way, but I was fortunate to have found a role as a Wellness officer, checking in on people in hotel quarantine It was a unique role to say the least, especially since something like that hadn’t existed prior to 2020 I enjoyed helping people through what was such a difficult time for so many Fast forward to the beginning of 2022 and hotel quarantine was slowly being phased out I started looking for a permanent opportunity that still allowed me to help people on a daily basis A friend of mine told me about the role with Allianz Partners, so I had my interview with Talentpath and successfully started my journey as a Customer Service Agent

What does recognition look like to you?
It’s like being a mum to 100 girls! No day is ever the same, it’s fast-paced, very diverse, and before I know it it’s time to go home! It’s important to me to have this feeling of making a difference to someone’s day and I get that in my role I know the impact I have on these girls will be remembered well beyond their schooling life Some of us were lucky to have teachers or key figures growing up that gave us the encouragement to be the best we can be I feel like I have that responsibility to these girls
Tell us what your ideal work environment looks like.
I spent a few years in mining as an Office Manager and it was quite stressful They moved their head office from Brisbane to Sydney, but it was a blessing in disguise It forced me to really think about what I wanted to do with my future, and so I started studying Social Work at university Whilst starting my degree, I had a few contract roles which were all wonderful roles to work in, but it still wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do By chance, I was contacted by Talentpath for a full-time opportunity at Somerville House as an Administrative Assistant for the Boarding School I wanted to find a role that was within the field of my studying, so I had a few apprehensions when this role came up, but as soon as I met with HR I knew Somerville House was the right place for me There is so much social work involved in being an Administrative Assistant to the girls in boarding, and the school as a workplace is inspiring to say the least There is longlasting value in helping boarding school students through such an integral time in their lives, learning and growing in their home away from home

The value of education is priceless I finished high school in Year 10 and didn’t go to university until now, so I do wonder if an earlier education could’ve changed the direction of my career My advice to my children and all young people is that knowledge is key Having a degree can make a big difference, but even just being ready to learn and push yourself gives you the foundation for the rest of your life Even if you don’t end up using your qualifications, it’s the experience that shapes you Never stop learning

My career journey began after a realisation that I wasn’t growing and progressing the way I wanted to in my role at the time I was working in analytics with a national construction company and had been in that role for about six years Being in that role for so long, I was interested in learning something new and moving into an operational role within the business Unfortunately, there was not enough scope to facilitate a role there, so I was offered a redundancy which I took It was only six weeks before I was contacted by Talentpath for a temporary assignment with Wilson Security The opportunity was perfect for me before I jumped back into a permanent position elsewhere I was technically there as an Administration Assistant until December 2021, at which time a role became vacant after an internal promotion in the business As I was eager to move into an operations role, I put my hand up for a vacant Accounts Payable role and was offered it on a permanent basis
Believe in yourself more, you are capable of so much more than you think!
An ideal professional life to me is having a sense of purpose and productivity in my career, but also having the ability to switch off and enjoy my personal life stress-free I’m very much a person who truly cares about my team and company, so I’ll always go above and beyond when I need to But in general, having a good balance of both work and play is ideal
Putting people first I am all about building strong, genuine connections with my colleagues and I definitely feel that Wilson Security prioritises relationship building as well In addition to this, one of Wilson Security’s values is being team orientated As I’ve already mentioned, I love being part of a team, so this alignment is great for me

Always be open to opportunities but also learn when to walk away from situations that don't feel right for you
We will start to see a lot more computerisation and automation in security and in business admin Technology in security is advancing quite quickly and we’re seeing features like facial recognition become more prevalent in new products Automation is going to make things like processing invoices easier and faster, it’s really exciting

What does supporting diversity and inclusion mean to you? It means giving everybody a fair go and understanding that different strengths come in many different forms I have ADHD and sometimes I find it hard to sit still, but I’m incredibly productive and very good at organisation Workplaces need to understand that there is strength in embracing diversity in your workforce, and that acknowledging those strengths will get the best out of your team
Think back to when you first started out in your career. How have your values changed since then? I’ve had a varied career journey - I’m a believer in trying everything at least once! I started out in the beauty industry and then moved into hospitality before making my way into an admin & sales role It was around this time I also started studying nursing, but COVID had just hit and things were getting a little crazy, so studying something like nursing where a lot of practical elements are in medical facilities was a huge challenge I decided to leave nursing for the time being, but I was still longing for an opportunity where I could make a difference I spoke to Talentpath about the role at Rosies – Friends on the Street and I instantly connected with the organisation and opportunity I really love that I can give back to the community and contribute to a greater purpose through my role We’re a Not-For-Profit that help people who are homeless by providing companionship, hospitality as well as things like blankets and toiletries to make life on the s treets a little bit more comfortable for them It’s fulfilling knowing I make a difference
As clichéd as it is, finding purpose in what you’re doing and being very true to yourself is integral to a fulfilling professional life Sometimes as young adults, we can try to fit into societal norms and end up doing things we don’t really want to be doing I’ve worked in roles that probably weren’t the right fit for me, and it wasn’t until I started my current role that I realised work can be more than just a job - it can be fulfilling, purposeful and truly enjoyable I realised that I needed to be in an organisation and career path that aligned with who I was and what I valued in life Being able to connect with people fuels me, so I prioritise finding ways to do that meaningfully in both my work and personal life

I have a structured approach to my role, although my day-to-day tasks are still quite varied For the first two weeks of the month, I am deep into problem-solving issues and ad-hoc tasks such as account reconciliations and process improvements, and the other half of the month is when I do my monthly routine tasks that are required as an Accountant Although I follow this structure, I always make room for flexibility and time-sensitive priorities such as quarterly reports

Career Path Tell us about your career journey so far. While studying at University, I worked part-time at Tiffany & Co where I had a manager who consistently supported my dreams to work in PR or marketing Knowing that he cared about my future was really encouraging and eventually led me to an opportunity to join the Tiffany & Co PR and Marketing team as an intern After completing the internship, I started to think about my next steps I made a LinkedIn account, browsed companies that I was really interested in working for, and set up job alerts for these companies I always wanted to work for Disney or Nickelodeon and, eventually, I received a notification that Nickelodeon had posted a job ad for an available Marketing Assistant position I got so excited and thought ‘I must get this job!’ Knowing it’s a kid's TV company centred around playfulness and fun, I decided to take that approach with my application My cover letter was written in the form of a story, starting with ‘once upon a time’, and in addition to applying online, I sent a hard copy of my resume in a box that I had decorated as a piñata Inside, I included hand-cut green confetti, so that when you opened the box, my resume was amongst the ‘Slime’ - something that Nickelodeon is known for LinkedIn indicated that hundreds of people had applied for the role, so making my application different helped me stand out from the crowd and get the job After receiving the life-changing call from HR, I packed up my life and moved from Brisbane down to Sydney I worked my way up from Marketing Assistant to Marketing Coordinator before Nickelodeon’s parent company, Viacom, merged with CBS Not long after the merger, I was promoted again to Marketing Executive working across Nickelodeon and Network 10, then picked up a mat leave cover position as the Marketing Manager for MTV and Comedy Central In my time at this company, I was again fortunate enough to have managers that really believed in me and continued to be career mentors to me after my departure

A lot of hard work! Can you tell me about your journey that led you to becoming a Change & Experience Manager?
What do you enjoy most about your day-to-day role?
Change is evermore integral in shaping the way we impact our people and communities Being able to influence more investment in change is important to me and my organisation’s future I’m always challenging how we think about flexibility, continuous improvement, efficiency and how I can best represent the wider community of my workplace How can your workplace support your growth and development?
In my current role I feel there is a strong connection between output and the customer Knowing that my team can make a tangible difference in the world and impact vulnerable communities is very humbling and rewarding
What unique benefits or initiatives in a workplace do you value? I value consistency and transparency and I find if I get that, I function better in my role In terms of aspects that keep me motivated, it’s about flexibility
I had to get up to speed very quickly with the New Zealand way of doing things I took a role as a Contact Centre Agent for a national vehicle glass company, but after two days of training, I was approached by the Centre Manager who saw potential in me to take on a Sales Manager role I took the role and ended up successfully running that centre, managing 29 people I then went on to work in several national organisations across the areas of operations, business analysis and workforce compliance before making my way to Australia to join UnitingCare as a Contact Centre ManagerChange & Experience Change & Experience is about change, but also about managing customer experience, improving employee experiences and having impact on the business in a holistic, sustainable way I have been very blessed with my career, but my key driver has been my hard-working father, instilling a glass-half-full attitude in me
If you could travel back to the beginning of your career and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
We have harnessed technology to enable that ability to work at times that work for us I am a firm believer in output over time spent

What do you enjoy most about Change?
I studied Communications at university thinking I was going to be a journalist! During my final year I was selected to take part in the intern program at the ABC which almost guaranteed me a position in the graduate cadet program the following year But towards the end of that year the program was axed due to a change in government Although I was devastated at the time, not going down the journalism path was pivotal in my growth and career journey I took it upon myself to book a flight to Sydney and found myself working in a communications role for the Federal Government I started to realise there were more similarities than differences between journalism and communications and continued to pursue a career in communications One day I was chatting to a friend in Western Australia who was trying to convince me to move over She worked in the resources field and couldn’t stop talking about how much she loved it Her convincing worked, and shortly after I made the move Moving was one of the best decisions I made – not only did I get to have a vast career in the resources field, I also met my wonderful husband and later started our family I moved into resources and construction where I performed a number of communication roles for the next 10 years I found that I was doing lots of work on projects specifically around major changes or acquisitions and thought ‘this could be a career path for me’ I truly find joy in helping people – it feels like change is the best bit of all my different experiences rolled into one! I continued to expand my career in change through various permanent and contracting roles before coming full circle and returning to the resources industry as an Organisational Change Manager in a contract role I’ve always been open to moving industries throughout my life, and I think without those experiences I wouldn’t have the richness in my career
How do you believe people should be rewarded and recognised at work?
Great question! So many leaders find it so hard to recognise their team members for the work that they contribute Not being recognised is such a detractor for engagement Just a simple recognition at the beginning of the meeting can be just as impactful as a pay rise

Back yourself! Have some confidence in your ability and your own capability As a young woman it was easy to lose confidence in my skills If I could give myself an injection of confidence back then, it would’ve probably given me more opportunities to excel

Definitely helping people My favourite thing to do is help people both at work and in my personal life: In my spare time I'm an end-of-life doula I love being able to provide that sense of certainty and assurance to people who really do need it both professionally and personally

Some people prefer working from home to look after children or for their mental health, and others enjoy working best in an office environment five days a week As the CEO, implementing a flexible work policy was a bit daunting at first, but we’ve seen an increase in employee happiness and productivity, so it has definitely been worth it
Can you give me a brief overview of your journey to becoming CEO & Head of Product at Conpago?
The tech start-up world is continuously changing and improving It’s a very exciting industry to be involved in At Conpago, we’ve built a great environment and company culture that is open and flexible That’s what I love about start-ups – the culture is very fluid and is fueled by our team Another exciting part of a start-up is being able to act on opportunities fast There is no red tape when it comes to getting things approved or through management, so you can achieve some amazing things really quickly
Conpago started off as part of a research project at QUT on how to combat isolation in older Australians We began with a hardware device to help isolated elderly people feel connected to real people and supported when they need it Conpago has gone through a journey to find out what the market wants and after user testing, we realised hardware wasn’t the route for us, so we changed to a software solution instead In the start-up world you must be agile, and whilst we’re shifting our focus slightly our mission remains the same Conpago has moved into the care sector and now we’re purely a B2B business across aged care and retirement organisations, with plans to extend into NDIS A tech start-up isn’t for the faint hearted, and one of the biggest challenges for us is introducing a technology product that is easy enough for elderly people to pick up and use I was elected to become CEO & Head of Product by the Executive Board two years ago, and prior to that I was a Product Manager It’s a tough gig being a CEO, but very rewarding too I come from a project management background which has proven to be a great skillset to have under my belt Regardless of the industry you’re in, the ability to project manage always prevails I’ve always loved the technology space but haven’t had any previous tech experience, so I took it upon myself to soak up as much as possible on the job Every day presents a new learning opportunity, in the start-up world you never stop learning!

The best advice I’ve received for the tech start-up space is to work on agile systems and pick a tech stack carefully if you want to scale with the team and resources you have In addition to this, mentors have told me time and time again to ‘hire smart’ It’s something I’ve only recently started to understand being CEO Wherever you are on your journey, it’s important to know that the people you hire are invested in the business In saying this, take advice from elders and mentors with a grain of salt! In the end you are the only one in control of the decisions you make
As the founder I'm pouring every single bit of myself into this company, but I understand that my employees' motivations won’t be the same, and that is more than fine What is important to me is knowing that each employee has a sense of ownership in their role, because in the end a CEO is only as good as their team We’re going on this journey together
What does supporting diversity and inclusion look like to you in the workplace?
What is your best advice for someone wanting to start a career in technology and the start-up space?
It’s different for everyone As cliché as it is, I read a Simon Sinek’s book about finding your ‘why’ Looking inwards, I found that being able to help and see others succeed is my ‘why’ What I get excited about in my role is creating a work environment that sets my team up for success
We spent a lot of time workshopping this at Skedulo recently It seems obvious but we started by asking our team how they liked to be recognised What was interesting was yes, some people liked to be recognised publicly and others didn’t, but we found out that our team wanted peer-to-peer recognition more than anything else Our solution was to create a framework within our team messaging app to give recognition to their peers every week We’re seeing a lot more acknowledgement and recognition, which also means more conversations about all the great things people are doing Before, it was up to a manager to start the momentum, but now it’s the group pushing it forward which is more important to our team anyway
What is your best advice for someone wanting to start a career in technology? Take this with a grain of salt, but in 2022 I don’t think you need a university degree to succeed in tech Skedulo doesn’t place a huge emphasis on a degree, especially as the content hasn’t really changed much from when I was studying more than 15 years ago Bootcamps and short courses are probably going to benefit you more than a 4 year degree, purely because you get more of a feel for what working in tech is like If you’re fresh out of high school, I recommend giving a short course a go before jumping straight into university Also, there are so many online learning courses these days! I taught myself how to build Flutter mobile apps through an online course Upskilling and self-learning in your own time shows you have passion, which is important in tech How do you believe people should be rewarded and recognised in your workplace?

I never had grand plans to become a Vice President of Engineering, I just liked coding a lot! The beginning of my journey actually began in a kitchen I started a chef apprenticeship straight out of high school but about halfway through I had a realisation that I didn’t want to pursue it long-term Alongside guidance from a mentor, I started to ask myself what I loved doing as a kid and believe it or not, one of my hobbies was writing basic computer games! I really enjoyed doing something creative and loved being able to create things that people can use Yes, you created delicious food as a Chef, but after the food is eaten it’s gone Technology allows you to create something with long-lasting impact I entered university as a mature-age student studying a bachelor of IT At the time, studying opened a world of possibilities By chance, we had a company host a seminar on an undergraduate program where you were paired with an IT business for work experience whilst completing your degree I applied, got an offer, and accepted a graduate role in Government, relocating to Canberra shortly after The weather in Brisbane is hard to beat, and after spending a bit of time in Government I built up a network of connections that eventually helped me find a role in Brisbane I continued to grow my career, moving from very hands on positions to senior positions and then eventually into leadership People in technology commonly move into management after working their way up, but like any leadership role you need a high level of people skills to excel Whether someone in my team chose to go down a leadership path or wanted to further their technical skills – I'm very supportive and passionate about creating a clear pathway for those in tech At Skedulo we work with external academies and learning houses to provide a foot in the door for not only young people starting out in their careers, but mature students like myself who have decided to make a career switch I started at Skedulo when we were a small team of six, and I’ve grown with the company organically The challenges that come with a growing company push me through my career, and I love that
What do you enjoy most about working in the tech space?

Bengt: I’d say the same about Matt, we’re a great team together, and collaboration is very important when you’re a developer so being able to find people that you gel with is really important I’ll also say that you wouldn’t be good a developer if you didn't have soft skills! Being able to communicate effectively and understanding briefs make your life as a developer ten times easier
Matt: I’ve learned a hell of a lot from so many clever people in the tech space It's a very challenging job for me, so when you meet someone that is really good, you want to learn and absorb as much knowledge as possible It’s not often that I’m nice to Bengt (laughs), but I consider him to be one of those people I like to bounce ideas off him and it's easy to collaborate with him Although programmers aren’t known for their communication skills, tech people are actually quite modest and normal people

Matt: Back in England I completed high school and headed straight into the family engineering business Living close to London and being interested in finance, I had a vision of being a Stockbroker, so I got my foot in the door running errands before working my way up to an Admin role Before I could progress any further, I was made redundant due to the stock market crash in the late 80s At a crossroads, I went back to college to study computers I studied whilst working for the family business for a while, but it wasn’t until I was 27 that I took tech seriously 20 years later and I haven’t looked back since What skills do you think are important to have in tech?
Bengt: My journey started before the web existed! After completing a university degree in technology fresh out of school in Sweden, I worked in various tech roles within the travel industry I made the move to Australia in the late 90s at a time when tech was booming I was fortunate to work in a diverse range of industries, meeting Matt along the way We’ve now worked together at a few organisations (including my current role), so you could say we get along!
What does a fulfilling professional life look like to you?
What do you love most about working in tech?
Matt: The freedom to practice and learn new things Obviously you have responsibilities to your role, but what I love about working at Minor DKL is that they provide us we freedom to try new things A fulfilling professional life is not necessarily about money, it’s the learning opportunities and working in an environment where you’re encouraged to better yourself and be challenged
