PETAL PORTRAITS

In The Petal Series, Tal Shpantzer both enhances and challenges the traditional relationship, symbolism and depiction of flowers associated with female subjects. Inspired by the Dadaist movement and the works of Anna Therese Johanne Höch - critic of the mass culture beauty industry and pioneer of the art form known as photomontage - Tal Shpantzer blends fashion conceptualization, fine art painting stylistics and documentary photography techniques to construct a fictional scenario in which the pain and pleasure of personal experiences emerge with eerie and foreboding qualities.

“I am captivated by the dialogues that emerge through each woman and petal portrait. A raw and unpretentious moment can reveal complexities, evoke imagined histories, and hidden truths,” she says.

The series, currently constituted of 50 photographs, is rooted in Ms. Shpantzer’s own experience with the reconfiguration of personal memory after a period of amnesia. The imagery of personal struggle when faced with altered notions of time & space.
