EMILY BRONTË’S
GOTHIC TALE OF TORTURED LOVE IS BROUGHT
TO THE STAGE IN ALL ITS TURBULENT, PASSIONATE GLORY.
Long before Twilight stirred the emotions, Wuthering Heights embodied the eternal pull between good and evil, dark and light, and heaven and hell. This exhilarating and vibrant adaptation of the literary classic brings to life the all-encompassing love between the silent, brooding Heathcliff and the emotionally unstable Catherine. Their destructive relationship is one of the most enduring love stories of English literature. First broadcast as a Radio 4 drama for Woman’s Hour in 2003, writer Lucy Gough has now adapted the work for the stage.

The One Eyed Man Project IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TALIESIN ARTS CENTRE AND SHERMAN CYMRU Tickets: £3. Over 18s only. HOW’S GOOD? BAD? INDIFFERENT? Whichever, probably the last thing you feel like doing is putting on your glad rags, wolfing your tea and heading off out for the evening. So, why am I suggesting that you do? Because I think I can offer you something unique... Philip Ralph is offering you the chance to do something different. What you see will never be repeated anywhere. Unscripted, unplanned, it’s for you and you alone. Just bring yourself, an open mind and a yen for something different. Philip will be there with no idea what to talk about but a genuine desire to think about life and the world from a totally unconventional angle. You could see The One Eyed Man twice in a night. You could see it in three different venues. You could see it once and complain to your MP. I genuinely don’t care what you think about the government, the X Factor or the royal wedding. But I do care what you feel passionately about, what you dream about and what you know in your bones to be true. Three different venues, two shows a night - no script, no pre-planning, no rules. It’s about you, me and the day we’ve all just lived through. How can you resist? Philip Ralph, associate artist with Volcano Theatre Company, is an acclaimed writer for television, film and theatre as well as prolific actor and performer. Catrin Finch Tickets: £16 Concessions: £15
QUEEN OF HARPS, CATRIN FINCH VISITS TALIESIN as a part of a tour showcasing her superb new album, Annwn. Annwn is a collection of traditional Welsh music, newlyarranged by Catrin in an electro-modern, occasionally jazzy, style. Accompanied by a four piece band, she uses groundbreaking effects to produce stunning results for this project. In Welsh mythology Annwn is the ‘otherworld’ and a key place in the tales of the Mabinogion. Ruled by Arawn, it was essentially a world of delights and eternal youth, where disease was absent and food ever-abundant. Catrin has always had a great interest in Welsh mythology and traditional Welsh music. Inspired by the fabulous stories of Mabinogion, this latest musical journey conjures images of worlds created by authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

On the Streets Dir: Penny Woolcock UK 2010 1hr 30mins Shot over eight months with rough sleepers and vulnerably housed people, giving the seen but unheard residents of London’s streets a voice. "Food is the least of our problems," says Derek, a contributor, and over the months making her film, Woolcock realised the problems of homeless people have very little to do with the lack of a roof over their heads or a bed to sleep in. Their problems come from their past lives, and are less easy to remedy. Introduced by the director (TBC).
The Housing Maze: Young people's stories On The Streets will be preceded by a short animation illustrating the types of issues young people face in finding safe and secure housing. Morning Glory (12A) Dir: Roger Michell USA 2010 1hr 47mins Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Jeff Goldblum From the director of Venus and Notting Hill. Newly hired as a producer on a national morning-news program called Daybreak, Becky Fuller decides to revitalize the low-rated show by bringing in legendary anchorman Mike Pomeroy. Pomeroy, however, refuses to do pieces like celebrity gossip and fashion, and clashes with his co-host Colleen Peck. Meanwhile, Becky's romance with a colleague begins to unravel, leaving her struggling to save her relationship, her job and Daybreak itself. A charming comedy from the writer of The Devil Wears Prada. Tuesday 3rd May
Biutiful (15) Dir: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu Mexico/Spain 2010 2hrs 27mins Spanish with English subtitles Javier Bardem, Hanaa Boucharib, Maricel Alvarez Biutiful is the stunning fourth feature from the acclaimed director of Babel, 21 Grams, and Amores Perros. Displaying the hallmarks of his unique, humanist brand of filmmaking, his latest work once again portrays and tackles the eternal dialogue of mortality. Academy Award winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) is simply sensational as Uxbal, a small–time grifter trying to find his way through the moral maze of contemporary Barcelona while supporting his two young children. Biutiful is a moving tale of life, loss and the eternal love that exists between a father and his children. As compassionate as it is hard–hitting, this is Inarritu at his most direct and assured. Powerful, provocative and intensely personal, Biutiful will get under your skin and stay there. Academy Award nominee, BAFTA nominee 24

The Fighter (15) Dir: David O’Russell USA 2010 1hr 55mins Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams The Fighter tells the story of boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward and his trainer brother Dick Eklund, chronicling the brothers' early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Massachusetts, through Eklund's battle with drugs and Ward's eventual world championship in London. It is the inspirational tale of these two brothers who, against all the odds, come together to train for the historic title bout that will unite their fractured family, redeem their pasts and, at last, give their hard-luck town the pride it has been waiting for. Academy Award nominee, Golden Globe winner, BAFTA nominee “An exhilarating fight flick that, like its scappy central character, is impossible not to root for” EMPIRE 25

Submarine (15) Dir: Richard Ayoade UK 2010 1hr 37mins Sally Hawkins, Paddy Considine, Noah Taylor, Craig Roberts Based on the hilarious debut novel by Swansea’s own Joe Dunthorne, Submarine is the comic coming of age story of 15 year old Oliver Tate. In his head, he’s a cool literate genius, in reality he’s socially inept and unpopular. He’s set himself two tasks for the summer - to lose his virginity, before it becomes legal, to Jordana - a pyromaniac bully, and to prevent his mum from leaving his dad for her capoiera teacher. Submarine has already enjoyed success at the Toronto and Sundance film festivals and is sure to be a big hit here in Swansea. “The most refreshing, urgent and original debut the British film industry has seen in years” TELEGRAPH

Robinson in Ruins (U) Dir: Patrick Keiller UK 2010 1hr 41mins Vanessa Redgrave Robinson in Ruins marks the eagerly awaited return to feature filmmaking by Patrick Keiller, imaginative social commentator and Britain's foremost cinematic essayist. An experimental mockumentary, the third in a series concerning the work of a non-existent character named Robinson. Over footage of pastoral scenes in the countryside, dilapidated buildings in London, abandoned campsites and evidence of environmental projects of the past (successful and otherwise), the narrator discusses the themes of Robinson's previous films, how they tie in with her study of corporate and governmental responsibility to the Earth and British society, and how it all connects with the global economic crisis of 2008. Keiller will be on hand to introduce the film, presented in association with Swansea University’s Centre for Urban Theory (CUT), Centre for the Study of Culture and Politics (C-SCAP), and the journal Romance Studies. 26

A Religiosa Portuguesa/ The Portuguese Nun (Cert TBC) Dir: Eugène Green France/Portugal 2009 2hrs 9mins French/Portuguese with English subtitles Leonor Baldaque, Francisco Moscos, Diogo Dória A young French actress of Portuguese parentage visits Lisbon for the first time. She is there to act in a film inspired by Guilleragues’ Letters of a Portuguese Nun. She is soon fascinated by a nun who comes to pray every night at the Nossa Senhora do Monte Chapel on Graça Hill. During her stay, the young woman has a number of encounters, which, much like her previous existence, seem ephemeral and without consequence. But one night, after finally speaking with the nun, she glimpses her destiny and the meaning of her life. Having garnered rave reviews, this captivating film is as much a love story to the city of Lisbon as it is an enigmatic, eccentric drama, graced with a beautiful fado score.

Barney's Version (15) Dir: Richard J. Lewis Canada/Italy 2010 2hrs 12mins Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, Rosamund Pike, Minnie Driver Based on Mordecai Richler's award winning novel, Barney's Version is the warm, wise and witty story of the politically incorrect life of Barney Panofsky. The film spans three wives, three decades and two continents. There is his first wife, Clara, a flame-haired, flagrantly unfaithful free spirit. The second Mrs. P. is a wealthy Jewish heiress who shops and talks incessantly. It is at their lavish wedding that Barney meets, and starts pursuing, Miriam, his third wife, the mother of his two children, and his true love. Barney’s is a gloriously full life, played out here on a grand scale, including a show-stealing turn from Dustin Hoffman. Howl (15) Dir: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman USA 2010 1hr 24mins James Franco, Mary Louise Parker, David Strathairn, Jeff Daniels Starring James Franco in a careerdefining performance as Allen Ginsberg, Howl is the story of how the young poet’s seminal work broke down societal barriers in the face of an infamous public obscenity trial. In his famously confessional style, Ginsberg - poet, counter-culture icon, and chronicler of the Beat Generation - recounts the road trips, love affairs, and search for personal liberation that led to Howl, the most timeless work of his career. Howl interweaves three stories: the unfolding of the landmark 1957 obscenity trial; an imaginative animated ride through the prophetic masterpiece; and a unique portrait of a man who found new ways to express himself, and in doing so, changed his own life and galvanized a generation. 28

Son of Babylon (12A) Dir: Mohammed Al Daredji Iraq/UK/France/Netherlands/UAE/Egypt/Palestine 2009 1hr 40mins Arabic/Kurdish with English subtitles Shazada Hussein, Yasser Talib April 2003, three weeks after the fall of Saddam. From the mountains of Kurdistan to the sands of Babylon, they hitch rides with strangers and cross paths with fellow pilgrims on an all too similar quest. As a grandmother struggles to accept the truth, Ahmed retraces the footsteps of a father he never knew. This is a journey that will not only connect them to the past, but will determine their lives forever. A heartfelt film from Iraqi director Al Daredji. “A sensitive, stoical, compassionate film” OBSERVER 31

John Piper IN ASSOCIATION WITH GOLDMARK GALLERY John Egerton Christmas Piper is a unique and pivotal figure in the history of 20th Century British art. No other artist since Turner has done more to celebrate the British landscape and its architecture. Sensing the threat of destruction in the advent of war and possible invasion, Piper’s work made a significant shift from international modernism to more naturalistic scenes. Piper developed a preciousness for Britain’s heritage, focussing on location and a sense of place, history and identity, belonging and memory, all elements that have come to be synonymous with his work. Of all the artists active in Britain during the twentieth century, John Piper was probably the most versatile, working in every medium available to him. This exhibition is brought to Oriel Ceri Richards Gallery by Goldmark Gallery, which has been exhibiting and selling 20th Century and contemporary art for three decades. It features a selection of artist’s prints spanning Piper’s fertile and diverse career celebrating his country’s Romantic heritage. During the exhibition we will be screening An Empty Stage; a Goldmark Gallery film which explores the extraordinary life of this outstanding British artist.

Mike Hill EBB AND FLOW Having worked as a background artist for animated film and as an illustrator, this is the first major exhibition of Mike’s work. A keen naturalist since childhood, the core theme and inspiration running through the work is nature and the natural environment, with the sea at its heart. The sea as a force, that ebbs and flows, lives and breathes, shapes and transforms, becalms and exhilarates, a constant source of ideas.
