February 2021

HI HI, My dear design friends, Welcome to a new issue of Talk Carpet Magazine. This month we’re taking you on a tour of the Spring Summer 2021 fashion trends, giving you tons of fashion inspiration. Our mood boards are taking color and pattern ideas from this season’s runway looks. It is great to see how fashion brands got creative showing their collections outside of the traditional crowded shows. In that same spirit, we did some out-of-the-box thinking for our custom carpet patterns. We took it upon us to design matching runway carpets for some of the spring-summer looks. They make for some very cool and fashionable corridor carpets. On the travel side, we’re doing a round-up of our favorites in several categories. After six months of traveling, we felt it time to take a pause and look back at all the marvelous things we discovered. Enjoy & stay awesome, Christophe Prosper Rammant, Creative Director

Beauties of Interior Design: our hotel favorites from the last six months We are continually looking for places to visit with a personality that exhibits or tells a story about their surroundings.

The L’Arlatan Hotel in Arles A Swiss billionaire, Maya Hoffman, turns an old private residence into a gigantic 6000 square meter masterpiece. The L’Arlatan hotel is covered with an eruption of color, light, and contemporary architecture. Each chamber and entrance is a work of art that is unique. In designing the boutique hotel, Mexico-based Cuban artist Jorge Pardo sought to preserve L’Arlatan’s history while infusing a new creative spirit. L’Arlatan Hotel takes travelers through history, culture, and senses on an extraordinary, magical journey. 4

Lily of the Valley in Saint Tropez Lily of the Valley is located in the hills of Saint Tropez, overlooking the Gigaro beaches. This new hotspot opened in July of 2019 and is designed by the legendary Philippe Starck. This hotel sits 20 minutes away from Saint-Tropez, making it the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Saint Tropez’s marina and beach clubs. Lily of the Valley aims to provide a wellness reset for their guests. Providing wellnesscentric activities, like private yoga sessions, expert-led hikes, waterskiing, and more. The hotel shades, including fawn and beige, are all neutral. With mostly wood for the floors, walls, and furniture, material choice is largely raw.

Casa de Sao Lourenco in Serra da Estrella Sitting proudly in Portugal’s highest mountaintops, this hotel has one of the best panoramic views. Casa De Sao Lourenco is a lodge nestled in the peaks of Portugal’s remote Serra da Estrela range. Burel, a wool style unique to the Serra da Estrela region, is one of the hotel’s central themes. Walls, hand-painted panels, art installations, and intricate ceiling constructions covered by Burel wool. This inn gives the feeling of a Mountain SPA where the simple themes are the fresh air of the altitude and the panorama’s elegance.

August Hotel in Antwerp The August hotel is quickly rising as one of the top places to stay in Antwerp. A former Augustinian cloister becomes a modern-day sanctuary. Developed by Vincent Van Duysen, this hotel features an elegant interior with fantastic dining and hospitality experience. The August hotel features pared-back finishes to give the spotlight to the architecture of the building. Furnished in various raw and warm materials, this hotel blends scandi chic and modern perfectly. The hotel experience has stopped being a single-dimensional place to stay. Still, it is the place that offers tourists the chance to get in touch with the culture of the region they visit, to open up new areas of awareness, to feel, to explore, to relax, and even to reflect on ourselves through new experiences.

Reform Transition is a brand new gradient carpet tile collection We introduce you to Reform Transition by ege Carpets, a gradient carpet tile collection. A unique concept designed by Manganese Editions that blends sustainability with luxury.

Seed The Seed design reflects the beginning stage of a plant. When multiple seeds land into the ground and start planting roots, it creates these little speckles in the soil. The design is decorated in porous shapes that imitate the image of a plant seed. There are seven colors available in three organic color palettes, including shades of green, gray, and black.

Leaf Leaf is the second design of the Transition Collection. It beautifully portrays the leaf’s transitional phases of a plant. With an appearance more like clusters, the design makes it feel like you are walking on a pile of foliage.

Fibre Lastly, Fibre is a pattern that mimics the last seasonal cycle of a plant: when it loses its leaves and turns into a withered and wilted skeleton of a plant. This process is reflected in the carpet through the sharp block-like patterns throughout. With brighter tones to choose from, it signifies a place for a new life to emerge.

The lookbook titled The Sixth Sense shows six transitional parts, each with different themes according to the season. We are particularly drawn to the sixth The Royal Family of the Basement theme. This section features casual streetwear fashion styled with elegant jewelry and royal sashes. The ready-to-wear collection blends classic and modern, showing the transformation of Takahashi’s brand. It is the inspiration for our mood board featuring a green gradient carpet. Just as the collection shows the transitional phase with his modern and bold designs, we use the leaf design from the new Reform Transition collection by ege carpets. The Leaf is a design by Manganese Editions that portrays foliage’s growth and decay throughout the various seasonal changes. The Leaf designs blend multi-tonal colors through gradient carpet tiles. From organic forest green to a golden brown, the colors show the transitional hues of a leaf from when they grow on a branch to when they fall on the ground. Like Takahashi’s designs featuring monochrome sweatsuits layered with bold statement jewelry, the Leaf design is in one color tone that can be blended with complementary colors. You can also mix two or three complementary colors to show a smooth gradient flow across your carpet flooring.

Feel at home With Alma In Stockholm, Alma is amongst those local community and coworking concepts that we would like to see expand internationally. Several original window paintings and drawings remain in the building, as a nod to the building’s past as design school. As a result, it adds a slight historical node to the coworking space. The interiors are very welcoming and well-balanced, with a distinctly Scandinavian theme. The paint palette includes soothing colors such as greys, blues, and teals. Alma has cultural programmings, drinks, cuisine, art, music, product design, and interactive architecture. Alma was developed by the very same people it caters, all pulled together by Alma Founder and Artistic Director Fredrik at the center, creating welcoming environments where members feel more at home. 14

Plaid patchwork carpet inspired by the avant garde

Vivienne Westwood Vivienne Westwood is known for incorporating modern punk into her luxury fashion brand.

We are in love with Westwood’s iconic SS21 collection virtual debut. Posing herself for this new collection, Westwood appears in red plaid and mesh stockings to represent her rebellious creativity. In our fashion February special, we are creating a runway carpet to match the SS2021 Vivienne Westwood looks. Doesn’t this plaid patchwork carpet look stunning as a corridor carpet?

Uniquely shot by her husband Andreas Kronthaler on an iPhone, the fashion collection features a new twist on her designs. Vivienne Westwoods collection represents minimalism, with a brand message that tells people to buy only what they need. She creates unique and timeless apparel using a small number of materials on each piece. Being eco-conscious is a core value for the company. Westwood uses thin cotton, linen, and sheath fabrics to create her clothing. She also uses recyclable materials that are organically FSC Certified. Similarly, we translate the bold plaid designs into our custom carpet pattern. The different types of plaids we use in our patchwork carpet make the floor stylish and fun, just like Vivienne’s British punk fashion. Traditional red and green plaid, overlaid with more modern versions, creates a contemporary design for this commercial carpet.

Using Biophilic Interior Design to Bring the Outside Inside Over the last year, we’ve seen new interior design ideas go outside to accommodate the influx of outdoor dining. Our human love of nature – biophilia – is an innate desire, and that’s where the term biophilic interior design derives. Biophilic design is the interior design trend of bringing the outdoors inside. The outdoors in this context can mean colors, textures, materials, plant life, lighting choices, and more. We’ve had the opportunity to see this trend firsthand at places like Cordoba, Spain, at the Palacio de Viana Courtyards filled with climbing vines, or Mama Shelter Patio in Marseille, France, with their eclectic rooftop.

We adore Restaurant Botanica in Madrid, Spain, where plants and herbs are part of the décor and design; and Le Jardin Secret hotel in Brussels, Belgium, where large bay windows bring hidden outdoor gardens inside.

Hobo Hotel and Ett Hem’s natural elements in Stockholm, Sweden, where potted plants filled every inch of space, are surreal. At the same time, Downtown Camper hotel is unforgettable with its moss-covered pillars and wood branch chairs. The biophilic design of those spaces makes us feel we were a part of nature and the environment around us. Instead of separating from the design, we are immersed in it.

Bold fashion has returned to the mainstream with honest clothes that have practical magic about them. Designers such as Dries Van Noten and Emilio Pucci are both masters of color and print. They have long been advocates for eccentric everyday clothing. Younger designers such as Molly Goddard, Christopher John Rogers, and Matty Bovan are now getting on board. We are recreating the everyday exuberance of Emilio Pucci on our fashion materials palette. Combining gold and silver tones in our carpet design and using it as the background, we were able to make the palette stand out. Pairing the carpet with multiple contract products to bring it to life. With our brand new Transition Mix Tiles, you are able to create a smooth flow of color. Gradient carpet tiles transition by blending a color combination of your choice. A dark to a light color combination would best create a smooth transition of colors. These tiles will definitely vamp up your interiors project. Reform Transition is available in carpet tile, planks, special tile shapes, area rugs, and wall-to-wall carpets. Mix tiles are available in only 48x48 cm.

Four creative restaurants that feed our interior design appetite These four creative restaurants in Belgium and Spain left us more than satisfied. With top-quality cuisine and stunning interior design, these restaurants are a multi-sensory experience to remember.

El Nacional Located in the center of Barcelona is a unique multi-restaurant cuisine experience, El Nacional. This luxury food hall combines four concepts into one grand venue providing different experiences within the same location. Using reclaimed materials, the Lázaro Rosa-Violán interior design team managed to fuse four restaurants and four bars into one cohesive modernist garage venue.

Le Pristine Opened just June of last year by three star Michelin chef Sergio Herman, Le Pristine has quickly grown to be one of Antwerps hottest spots. We were pleasantly surprised to see what Space Copenhagen designers created with this stunning interior using the exposed concrete columns and brick walls as a backdrop for their theme. Dutch designers Maarten Baas and Bertjan Pot collaborated on a whimsical reception desk and lined it with exposed light bulbs to greet guests. Featuring a dark color palette of green, black, and grey may seem somber. But it is offset with pops of color and unique light displays that bring intrigue.

Le Leopard Le Leopard sits within French fashion house Darial, both housed in a once abandoned modernist textile warehouse in Barcelona’s BarLe Dreta de l’Eixample neighborhood. The brasserie features chic French-Italian haute cuisine amid a lavish interior inspired by the 1963 film “The Leopard.” The interior design inspires awe with gold-leaf ceilings, and red velvet banquettes. The hidden garden, with vaulted ceilings and concrete design elements, doubles as a temporary exhibition space for collaborations with contemporary artists and leaves you feeling like you’ve found a secret paradise in the middle of Barcelona’s trendiest neighborhood. 24

Buddy Buddy This small 70-meter café and nut butter shop is a design lover’s dream. The cafe has a very unique design concept split dramatically right down the middle. Devised by Amsterdam studio HOP Architects, Buddy Buddy features a two-tone interior. The far side is a setting with metallic red paint, high barstools, and bronze mirrors. The other side of the cafe features milky-white colors and large, open windows with lower seating options. However, the most dramatic feature is the intersection of the two. In the middle of the cafe, the color meets in sharp contrast and provides the perfect dramatic background for images.

Chanels signature tweed translated onto this

pink carpet design We are obsessed with Chanel’s new SS21 Ready-To-Wear Collection, which premiered at the Grand Palais during Paris Fashion Week.

Chanel’s new creative director Virginie Viard amazed us with a Hollywood-inspired fashion show. We are creating a custom runway carpet to match Chanel’s looks. Doesn’t that pink carpet design look marvelous as a corridor carpet? Maintaining the iconic Chanel look, Viard showcases many tweed outfits in combinations such as baby pink and black, which are perfect for this spring season. Throughout the collection, she brings back some of Chanel’s vintage silhouettes but with a modern twist. She uses embellished floral charms and belts as elegant accessories. Chanel’s assembly of different pink shades features crop tops and robe dresses lined with black trim. Bright pink monochrome suits with shoulder pads and blush pink tweed blazers are also featured. All of the pink tweed showcased is the primary inspiration for this custom design.

Christian Lacroix Carpets Bring Fun and Innovative Design to this office We recently had the honor to collaborate with architecture and interior design firm Eastlake Studio.

28

Ta l k C a r p e t . c o m

P r o j e c t

They selected one of our Christian Lacroix carpets for the expansion of design tech company ActiveCampaign’s headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. The office is a showcase of the power of using color, texture, and layout to create a great space. The company had expanded to three continents and reached maximum capacity in their Chicago offices. Instead of moving, they re-envisioned the area. Eastlake Studio did the original design in 2017, so they knew there was an opportunity to re-imagine the floorplan and gain square footage. The plan was to take the open floor plan and create various gathering areas filled with lush motifs, impactful branding, and memorable spaces. As a significant part of the interior, the flooring had a big job. It had to seemingly separate the open floor plan while adding to each space’s uniqueness without overwhelming but still supplying interest. Eastlake Studio selected our Atelier collection carpets for their variety of textures, designs, and themes inspired by the fashion icon Mr. Christian Lacroix. Selected to complement each room, the collection ranges from the Lacroix Mineral design theme of beach stones and quarry tiles; the Gravure motifs inspired by antique engravings of birds, butterflies, and mountains landscapes in Provence; and the Textile theme with the look of foreign fabrics, patchwork, velvet, and paisley. The specific carpet that is featured in this project is our velours red from the Christian Lacroix collection.

Visual Elements: favorite pattern inspiration sighted on our recent trips A pattern is a repetition of specific visual elements. When we think of patterns, we think of the standard repetition, but there are different variations of how designs can appear.

Mima Museum The Mima Museum in Brussels holds an exhibit that displays anthropomorphic contemporary artwork. The pop culture exhibition shows multiple graphics that incorporate animal drawings, graffiti, and tattoos. Interior designer Piet Parra is a visual artist and fashion designer who uses colorful aesthetics to portray humans as animals. His expertise is graphic art, so he paints cartoon characters on the windows, including birds, monkeys, and bugs.

Valerie Traan Gallery Additionally, the Valerie Traan Gallery is in Antwerps historical center, and the exhibit displays minimalist art and architecture. Her gallery is titled objects and subjects, and her art explores homelike interior design spaces. Valerie makes the art gallery look like her own house, arranging the gallery rooms to look like bedrooms and kitchens. The gallery is in a completely white backdrop with irregular strokes of brown and pistachio colors. Valerie uses neutral tones to make her exhibition emit a warm atmosphere. What an awesome pattern inspiration. 36

Ace And Tate Ace and Tate shop is an Amsterdam eyeglasses company in Antwerp. The shop collaborates with the startup company Plasticiet for Belgium to be eco-friendly. The brand uses sustainable materials such as recycled plastic and acetate instead of oil-based plastic. Their shop’s interior design space is beautifully colored in blue, yellow, green, and red.

Modernist Barcelona Antoni Gaudi is a master of patterns and designs. Thanks to Gaudi, Barcelona is a center for modernist architecture and art. The Casa Batllo is a landmark that best represents its rich history and beautiful design elements. The bold blue tile pattern covering the walls and floors brightens the whole interior space. Park Guell has some of the best views of Barcelona. The park perfectly reflects the harmony of nature and architecture. Josep Maria Jujol designs the bench and has it wrapped around the perimeter of the plaza. Ceramic shards of all colors cover the entire bench randomly. The roof terrace at La Pedrera-Casa Milà is a unique visit. Walking around it is like being in a museum full of sculptures. The rooftop uses cast iron and a stone base for the walls. The patterns and colors are in the earthy gold color to make the roof seem more sacred and ancient.

We are utterly obsessed with Thebe Magugu’s Spring 2021 collection. This collection has hidden spy themes he incorporates into his abstract designs. The Raf Simons’ SS21 womenswear show is nothing less than impressive. For his Prada debut, he amazes us with a truly stunning presentation. We’re super excited to design a matching runway carpet. Doesn’t our moss carpet look so cool in that corridor?

Texture inspiration found in everyday places along our travels Textures are a powerful technique for creating exciting and unique design projects. The texture is the surface quality or feel of an object and can be found anywhere you look.

Pink Salt Lakes The first is the Pink Salt Lakes in Camargue, France. Nestled deep in the rural area of France lies this fantastic tourist attraction. The salt lakes, aka Salin d’Aigues-Mortes, is the largest salt marsh in the Mediterranean. The lakes are one of the biggest salt producers in Europe, and the high salt content makes the lake water turn pink. The sandy textured salt molecules are pink because of the beta carotene inside the algae. Dunaliella Salina is the algae that make the water pink as it grows, just like how it makes flamingos pink.

Burel Wool Factory Isabel Costa’s Burel Wool Factory is a company that makes burel, a Portuguese fabric dating back to the 19th century. Originally from Burel Mountain sheep’s wool, burel is naturally handcrafted to make various fabrics. The factory is in the Manteigas village in Portugal and even saved Portugal’s economy from failing in 2000. Burel wool is tightly woven to create all kinds of items, such as clothing, furniture, and plaids.

Design Museum Ghent Additionally, the Design Museum in Ghent is showcasing an exhibit called Kleureyck. The exhibition displays eight color groups as part of the experience to commemorate Jan Van Eyck and his artwork. Curator Siegrid Demyttenaere and eleven interior designers create an installation for the Ghent altarpiece, and it shows the different layers of design practices.
