Welcome to the spring edition of Cougar Country, a publication focusing on the Chino Valley Unified School District, the Town of Chino Valley, and the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce. I want to mention all three entities because their success is dependent on each other. The District’s partnership with both the Town and Chamber, I believe, strengthens all three organizations and allows all of us to better serve the public.

The Spring continues to be a very busy time for Chino Valley Schools. We are on our race to the finish as we approach the last day of school on May 21st and Chino Valley High School graduation on May 22nd. As has been the custom the last several years, graduation will be held at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley at 7:00 p.m. The Findlay Toyota Center is a great location for graduation as it provides plenty of seating for attendees, you can actually hear the speakers and the graduates’ names announced, and it gets everyone out of the Chino Spring wind. Please join us to celebrate our seniors’ accomplishments as we send them off to bigger and better things.

Our spring sports are in full swing so to speak. Chino Valley High School Baseball and softball will be in season along with track and field. Heritage Middle School will have boys’ and girls’ soccer along with track and field which also includes our Del Rio School 5th graders.

As we approach the end of the school year, we begin honoring the

accomplishments of our students in various ways. Each school will be having their individual award programs with the CVHS Senior Scholarships and Award Night scheduled for May 8th at 6:00 p.m. in the CVHS East Gym which follows the freshman, sophomore, and junior awards earlier that day.

For many years, the district has promoted reading through the Million Word Challenge. The Million Word Challenge challenges students to read 1 million words during the school year. There are incentive parties throughout the year to continue to promote the program and students that do read 1 million words receive Amazon gift cards and have an opportunity to win an Amazon tablet. We will be honoring our Million Word readers at the MWC Banquet which is scheduled for May 6th at 5:30 p.m. in the Del Rio School cafeteria.

Lastly, this will be my last superintendent letter as I will be retiring effective the end of the school year in June. I want to take this opportunity to thank the staff, students, parents, and the Chino Valley and Paulden communities for their support over the past 27 years. I could not have asked for a better experience in Chino Valley Schools during my tenure as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, business manager, and finally superintendent. I am very excited to pass the reigns on to Cindy Daniels, who currently serves as the District’s assistant superintendent, who has been in the District and community for 15 years.

For more information about Chino Valley Schools, please visit the District website at www.chinovalleyschools.com. You can follow what is happening in school board meetings by going to the district’s YouTube page at CVSchools AZ.

I want to thank you for taking time out to look through this edition of Cougar Country. Your support is important to insure the success of Chino Valley Schools in educating the children of Chino Valley and Paulden.

Sincerely,

AT HERITAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Heritage Middle School students expressed interest in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Drones) but the school lacked funds to launch a safe and informative drone program. Recognizing an opportunity, teacher Rob Lynch at HMS took steps to get the funding needed to get the Drone Club off the ground and help get students flying high!
