Chino Valley is a mecca for offroading, camping, hiking, and finding secret swimming holes. We also have a beautiful vineyard with wine tasting, an amazing micro-brewery, and the best bbq in the state. Did we mention we also have a famous outdoor gun range?
Prescott Frontier Days® recently launched the Ride With Us podcast, hosted by Greg Mengarelli. In this recent episode, Greg sits down with Jason Owens to talk about his life, experience, and how he became the Office Manager of Prescott’s most significant event.
I want to welcome you to the Summer issue of Cougar Country.
My name is John Scholl and as the outgoing Superintendent of Chino Valley Schools. We just completed a school year where about 160 well-prepared graduates from Chino Valley High School will be moving on to careers and further education, fulfilling the motto, “Success begins with a CVHS diploma”. Most of the District staff is off for the summer but there is still a lot going on. We have summer school for CVHS students along with an invitation-only special needs program at Heritage Middle School. Something new for us this summer is Cougar Camp, a six-week fee-based summer camp for students aged 5 – 11 at Del Rio School. At our CVHS campus through July 25th we also offer free breakfast and lunch to all children in the communities of Chino Valley and Paulden who are 18 years and younger.
About six months ago, the CVUSD governing board selected the current CVUSD Assistant Superintendent, Cindy Daniels, to take over the reins of the District starting July 1st. I want to thank Cindy for supporting me as Superintendent over the past 8 years and want to wish her luck! I know the District is in good hands. As I pass the District on to Cindy, I pass this superintendent’s letter on to her as well.
Thanks,
John! It is an honor to be handed the reins.
Prior to school beginning on August 5th we have many activities planned. On May 29, the Board and the District Leadership Team met to evaluate the current state of the District and to create a strategic plan for success of students and employees. The guiding theme for the 24-25 school year, because a group of cougars is called a pride, is “One Pride: Together We Are Chino Valley!” It is our sincere desire to fully align all District operations for the success of each child. We have set goals for academic achievement, safety, hiring, transportation, facilities, IT, career and technical education, community relations, finance, and character development, all carefully crafted to facilitate academic success and preparation for life. As we pursue excellence, everyone will become familiar with these three terms: Celebrate, Monitor, and Adjust. At each board meeting throughout the year, we will be celebrating progress toward goals, deciding what to further monitor, and what may need some adjustment.
On July 31 all staff will gather to celebrate the achievements of each department and campus, to participate in annual training, and to learn about the ways they can be valuable members of the pride. We are excited and optimistic about the upcoming school year and to those who are new, we say “Welcome to the Pride!”
Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) is looking for both full-time and part-time bus drivers. Driving a school bus for Chino Valley Unified School District offers a unique opportunity to contribute positively to the community while ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
Cindy Daniels takes the Superintendent position in the Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) starting July 01, 2024. Daniels has been the Assistant Superintendent of CVUSD for 16 years and has over 35 years of experience working in education. Her experience in education and in the Town of Chino Valley provided incredible insight into what lies ahead for CVUSD.
Cindy took some time to answer a few questions about her new role with CVUSD, her vision for the future, and a little about herself.
Talking Glass Media: What do you look forward to/are most excited about in your new role with Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD)?
Cindy Daniels: I am looking forward to the opportunity to help set the direction for CVUSD and lead the District in strategic planning. I genuinely see my role as a bridge to what CVUSD is now, and to what it will become for students, staff, and the community. Many things about public education have changed over the course of my 35-year career including access to technology in the
classroom, public support for k-12 educational systems, educational choices for parents/families, and the lack of teaching and administrative applicants for jobs.
When I first started in education, there was fierce competition for jobs and it was not uncommon to start your career as a substitute teacher. I am very excited about being out front in the promotion and showcasing of all the amazing educational opportunities we have for students. I am excited about officially being the District’s #1 cheerleader! I firmly believe that when people know more about us, they will want to be part of CVUSD as staff members, students, or volunteers.
TGM: What plans do you have for CVUSD?
CD: In my role as superintendent we will be making a strong effort to communicate with our community. We realize that many folks are new to Chino and are unfamiliar with all the wonderful things our schools have to offer. We aim to change that. We have a strong brand and strong values that honor our country and community.
We also are very focused on creating graduates who are workforce-ready.
We have a staff committed to excellence. We know that parents have choices and we want to be their district of choice. We honor our past, but we are in the business of creating future-ready students. We will be increasing our career preparation programs and will be offering career exploration opportunities as early as kindergarten. We feel that this gives parents and the community confidence that we are being strategic about how we prepare children to successfully meet the challenges of tomorrow.
What is good for kids, is also good for society. I’m nearing the end of my career and have no interest in making a name for myself. What I am interested in is making a name for Chino Valley Schools.
When parents, grandparents, students, and the community think about public education, we want them to think, “I know our kids and our future are in good hands, because Chino Schools are making sure that students are prepared.” I want them to feel confident that their tax dollars and their children are in the conscientious care of good stewards.
TGM: How has your role in the Chino Valley Education Foundation (CVEF) impacted your role as Assistant Superintendent? Do you think holding the new role as Superintendent will have a positive effect?
CD: I have been blessed to be a founding member
of CVEF. I think there has been a strong symbiosis between my service on the CVEF Board and my role as Assistant Superintendent. It allows me to help the CVEF Board fulfill its mission of serving the students, families, and staff of CVUSD effectively.
I intend to remain on the CVEF Board and feel that District representation is crucial to helping both entities accomplish their respective missions. My favorite thing to do as a CVEF Board member is the meeting minutes…just kidding! My favorite thing is being the chairperson of the scholarship subcommittee.
I love my job and love CVUSD! There is no other place I would rather be.
Each year, in addition to preparing the applications, assembling them, and leading the committee in its decision-making process, I usually end up helping one or two seniors with their college applications, other scholarship applications, etc. It has been immensely rewarding to help young people realize their dreams and to know that my assistance made it possible. Administriva is not particularly fulfilling (paperwork, reports, etc.) but working directly with kids! Wowza! That keeps me energized!
TGM: What would you like to share about yourself with parents, students, and the community of Chino Valley?
CD: Well, one good thing about living in the Quad Cities area for 29 years, and in Chino in particular for 18 years, is that many people already know me.
My faith is very important to me and has sustained me through the many trials of life. I did not grow up as a child of privilege and that has made me compassionate and sensitive to the needs of our students and community. I am the proud mother of two CVHS graduates who used their CVHS diplomas and dual enrollment opportunities to go on and earn college degrees.
My son, Alex Daniels (CVHS Class of 2017) works in IT for Yavapai County, and my daughter Addie (Daniels) Hopp (CVHS Class of 2019), and her husband Ethan Hopp are Civil Engineers with Kimley-Horn in Prescott. When I am not in the office, you will find me out at the schools, hiking on area trails, or faithfully cheering on my Arizona Wildcats!
COUGAR FANS, WE HAVE YOU COVERED ON & OFF THE FIELD!
The Chino Valley High School Athletic Department is an extension of the high school curriculum that provides activities for the growth and development of our student-athletes. The administration believes that interscholastic athletics contributes significantly to preparing our studentathletes for becoming productive, contributing citizens of our community and society. A comprehensive program of athletic activities expresses our commitment to ensure the development of physical fitness and personal health, the acquisition of competent performances, and the achievement of excellence in the student’s chosen sport.
In addition, our aim is to develop a student-athlete with an improved self-image, the ability to learn a new skill, and an intrinsic motivation for growth and development. We want to see a student-athlete who will demonstrate a willingness to accept responsibility for their actions, measure themselves against standards of quality, express ideas and solutions to problems, and value fair play, honesty, and cooperation. We wish to excel in athletics, just as we desire to excel in all activities and functions in the name of the school.
94 STUDENTS — FROM PRESCOTT, CHINO VALLEY AND NORTHPOINT HIGH SCHOOLS – TOOK PART IN “EXPERIENCE THE ARTS,” A TEN-YEAR YAVAPAI COLLEGE TRADITION.
MO R E ON SIGNALSAZ .C O M
They crisscrossed the campus in ‘field trip’ formation, shuffling between studio and kiln; metal shop, wood shop, and computer lab. But once they settled in, students from three area high schools grabbed the tools at hand and let their imaginations fly.
Offered every spring by YC’s Art Department, “Experience the Arts” gives each student two classes stocked with tools and an experienced instructor to guide them. They test their instincts, challenge their expressive powers, and leave with a personal project or two – and a deeper appreciation of the arts.
