Jasmine Hill Gardens and outdoor museum

Affectionately known as “Alabama’s Little Corner of Greece,” the gardens feature more than 20 acres of yearround floral beauty and classical Olympian sculpture. Jasmine Hill is one of the oldest gardens in Alabama. Originally their home, Ben and Mary Fitzpatrick transformed the hillside with plantings and Greek statuary collected from their trips abroad. Since 1971, the gardens have been supported by Jim and Elmore Inscoe who have continued the traditions established by the founders and created the 501(c)(3) Jasmine Hill Foundation. A visitor's center – a replica of a full-scale Temple of Hera – is located on the grounds. In addition, a reproduction of the temple’s ruins as they appear today is one of the site’s attractions. There are self-guided garden tours available, private event rentals and the availability of use by photographers for photo shoots. Jasmine Hill is open Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission for adults is $10, children 3 to 12 years old is $6 and 2 years old and under are free. The gardens are located at 3001 Jasmine Hill Rd. in Wetumpka. For more information, visit jasminehill.org.

Gene Jones Antique Tractor Museum

Located at 3121 Park Circle in Millbrook, the museum features vintage machinery and a sizeable collection of Native American artifacts. Visitors can view dozens of fully restored tractors once used on Alabama’s working farms and learn more about the history of agriculture. Tours of the museum are available by appointment by calling Gene Jones at 334-285-1700.

Robinson Springs Park

Located on Monument Drive in Millbrook, the park offers a small gazebo and several tables and benches. This historically significant area features an attractive water fountain and retention area to capture the fresh spring water that comes from an aquifer.

Movie Memories

Elmore County has been home to multiple popular movie-set locations and provided the backdrop for some lesser-known films. Wetumpka, Millbrook and Tallassee all provided onlocation sites for the 2003 major motion picture Tim Burton’s Big Fish. Visitors to the area might recognize the Bibbs Grave Bridge, the Bloom house, the historic First National Bank building, the Old Elmore County Courthouse and other locales. Jackson Lake Island in Millbrook is home to the town of Spectre in the movie. Two other modern movies were filmed in downtown Wetumpka, including The Rosa Parks Story – a CBS madefor-TV movie from 2001; and The Grass Harp – filmed in 1994. The Elms, an 1830s vintage home in Coosada, was the filming site for several scenes in the 2004 movie, Heaven’s Fall.

City Profiles WETUMPKA

Wetumpka, known as the city of natural beauty, is located on the banks of the Coosa River, which offers the convenience of fishing, boating and kayaking. Downtown Wetumpka has retained many historical elements and buildings and is continuing to add artwork and informational signs to educate on the significance of the area’s history. Wetumpka is the county seat of Elmore County, which is Alabama’s third fastest growing county. Its favorable location is within miles of bigger-city amenities and the State Capitol located in Montgomery. The town name comes from an Indian term meaning “rumbling waters,” and the town is rich in aboriginal history. The elevation rises to a high point of 540 feet on Bald Knob Mountain, which contains the remains of the meteorite crater that blasted into the area bedrock 85 million years ago. Find more information about the city and what it has to offer at cityofwetumpka.com or wetumpkachamber.com.

TALLASSEE

Tallassee contains small-town charm in a friendly atmosphere and sits in both Elmore and Tallapoosa counties. Its name originates from the Creek Indian word “Talisi.” There are currently three industrial park areas in Tallassee maintained by the Tallassee Industrial Development Board. Its members offer prospective companies a multi-purpose, multi-tenant facility of more than 43,000 square feet in which to expand companies or secure new industry. The Tallassee Community Development Board is a nonprofit that helps build the community and improves quality of life through events, fundraisers and fellowship. TCD also works with other organizations in revitalization of the area.

ECLECTIC

Eclectic is referred to as the “Star of Elmore County,” a family-oriented town just south of Lake Martin. A short drive to Montgomery, Wetumpka, Auburn or Alexander City, Eclectic is located in the heart of the county. The downtown area is growing with family-owned restaurants, bars, boutiques and coffee shops. There also is a senior center that holds social and game-based activities. For more information about the town of Eclectic, visit townofeclectic.com.

MILLBROOK

One of the fastest growing cities in the state, the City of Millbrook was formally incorporated only 40 years ago but has a rich history dating back to the 1700s. This region consists of Robinson Springs, Elmore, Coosada and Deatsville.

A booming residential building campaign is responsible for Millbrook’s high rate of population growth, along with its convenient location to Montgomery for added amenities. Commercial areas and local retailers, restaurants and hotels offer plenty of options for residents. There are small city comforts and community, along with a thriving recreational area. With parks, civic engagement, accessibility and an enhanced military presence, the town of Millbrook is on the verge of continued expansion. For more information, visit cityofmillbrook.org.

COOSADA

A small town within Elmore County, the Town of Coosada has a population of about 1,500. The area was named for an Indian tribe that settled in the area in the 1500s. It used to be an active railroad and pioneer town, and Coosada was the location of some of the earliest industrial activity in the South. It’s maintained its identity as the birthplace of heritage in Alabama. Historical attractions in the area include The Elms, the Indian Exhibit, Parker’s Island, the Indian Heritage Monument and William Wyatt Bibb’s gravesite, the first governor of Alabama. After being incorporated in 1967, the town has only had three mayors, and the city council is composed of longtime residents. For more information, visit townofcoosada.com.

ELMORE

Located in western Elmore County, the town has about 4 square miles total and a population of about 1,200. Originally incorporated in 1906, both the town and county are named after General John Archer Elmore. Re-incorporation began in 1997 since original records were never maintained. Elmore has several ongoing projects to modernize its amenities and make life more attractive for people moving to the area. For more information on the town and its resources, visit townofelmore.com.

DEATSVILLE

Although initially incorporated in 1903, Deatsville lapsed after the 1910 U.S. Census and reappeared incorporated in 2000. Just south of Millbrook, this small town has a population of roughly 1,200. Alabama state Route 143 passes through the town, which has a total area of 4.7 square miles. Deatsville’s town office is located at 6980 state Route 143, and it can be reach at 334-285-9881. Due to its proximity to Millbrook, the town does not have its own local government.

rom rapid rivers for a challenging paddle to a relaxing day cruising on a lake, Elmore County’s bodies of water expose a recreational paradise to residents and visitors. A wealth of water-related activities, events and sports are available year-round right in the backyard. Locals and tourists revel in the wide offerings provided by the Tallapoosa and Coosa rivers, along with Lake Jordan and Lake Martin. A dream land for sportsmen, these lakes offer boat rides, water sports, sailing, skiing, tubing and other water-related hobbies. The rivers promote canoeing, paddling, fishing and a bounty of events on their banks. Beginning at Jordan Dam, the Coosa River’s northern passage is filled with rock formations and contains a Class III-rapids called Moccasin’s Gap. This area is attractive to rafters, canoers and kayakers for both competition and leisure. The most well-known, long-lived competition is the Coosa River Whitewater Festival, which occurs at Moccasin’s Gap over a two-day period. It attracts paddlers from across the Southeast and is in its 33rd year. Coordinated by the Coosa River Paddling Club, racers battle for King of the Wave, among other technical scores and titles. The fun begins Friday night as registered competitors and spectators roll in to set up camp at Coosa Outdoor Center and open the event with music and mingling. Competition begins late Saturday morning when three skill judges critique the technical aspects of

Funds from the event are raised for the operation and maintenance of Corn Creek, a recently renovated park along the Coosa River offering recreational opportunities for swimming and picnicking. For information, contact Coosa Outdoor Center owner Lonnie Carden at 334-201-5510 or Coosa River Adventures’ Chris Carter at 334-514-0279. From April to October, river excursions are available throughout the Coosa Outdoor Center and Coosa River Adventures, both located in Wetumpka. These companies provide transportation to the launch sites and all the necessary supplies for a trek down the river. The Coosa River divides the historic district of Wetumpka from its residential side and joins the Tallapoosa River in Elmore County to form the Alabama River. Paddlers enjoy views of wildlife, such as osprey, eagles and great blue heron, along the way. For lake life, the options are bountiful. Jordan Dam was put into service in 1929, creating the 4,900-acre Lake Jordan. The bass, bream, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie and catfish abound in the lake, making it a popular spot for fishermen and fishing tournaments throughout the year. Many enjoy tailrace fishing at one of the many dams on Lake Jordan, including Walter Bouldin and Mitchell dams. The overall quality of fish-

Public and private boat ramps provide access to Lake Jordan, and two popular areas are Bonner’s Point Landing on the west side of the lake and Rotary Landing on the east. Boating, jet skiing and water sports also are popular activities on the lake. Lake Jordan Marina is filled with everything needed for a good time on the water, including fuel, groceries, gift items, swimwear and watersport apparel, boating accessories, dock hardware, camp supplies and more. The water is calm, and there also is access to the Alabama River. Cost is $3 per person for the day, and overnight camping is available for $10 per person per night. Partially in Elmore County, and mostly in Tallapoosa County, Lake Martin offers 41,150 acres of water for continuous play. With lakeside restaurants, endless events, and plenty of wide-open water for activities, Lake Martin is a popular attraction. Developed in the 1920s with the construction of Martin Dam, Lake Martin is home to multi-million dollar lake homes and nearly 880 miles of undeveloped

The dozens of islands throughout Lake Martin feature various events and activities, from Big Beach’s sandy shoreline to Goat Island’s animal namesake inhabitants. Pets in Need of Fur-ever Homes Humane Society of Elmore County cares for rescue animals

A

t the Humane Society of Elmore County, Executive Director Rea Cord, along with her employees and volunteers, works diligently to save the lives of animals, pair up loving homes with new furry friends and protect the public. This nonprofit organization has been operational for more than 30 years and cares for more than 4,000 domestic animals annually as an open-admission shelter throughout Elmore County. “Adoption is always a good thing. If you’re looking for a new pet, please check your shelters first because we need lots of good homes for lots of needy animals,” said Cord. The process of matching a pet to an appropriate Executive Director Rea Cord cares for thousands of animals each year

home is an important tool at the shelter. Cord said one of the biggest reasons pets are surrendered is that the lifestyle and habitat of the owners is not suitable for pets. “We want to help people make a better choice, and we evaluate the pets before they go up for adoption. We help educate the public, so that it’s a good match,” said Cord. One approach to prevent unwanted animals and an overabundance of intake at the shelter is to spay and neuter pets. During the summer months, an average day could mean increasing intake by 20-30 pets, especially due to unwanted kitten litters. “If people did that our lives would be easier.

2018-19 NEWCOMER'S GUIDE Prevention is very important to us,” Cord said. “Taking care of your own pet is a good thing.” Public safety is first and foremost the most important goal for the organization, said Cord. The shelter is a resource to take in animals that have become hurt, a danger or a nuisance. The containment law in Elmore County prevents dogs from roaming at large, but there is still a fair problem with livestock escaping, said Cord. “Poor fencing or older fencing can cause a great hazard. This does not protect the property, the livestock or the rest of the public,” she added. While the shelter takes in domesticated animals, it cannot care for wildlife; however, shelter personnel can provide contact information for licensed wildlife rehabilitators with the ability and knowledge to assist those finding orphaned and injured wildlife. “If you must surrender an animal, be sure to tell us as much as possible about its behavior and medical history to help find an appropriate home,” explained Cord. The Humane Society is funded through donations from private individuals and businesses; fundraising activities; adoption fees; grants and contracts with the cities and county, along with earnings from its Tails End Thrift Store. The three main fundraising events held throughout the year are the Getting Down with the Dawgs Drawdown; Wags & Whiskers Silent Auction and Bark in the Park. The shelter also receives incredible support from other groups that hold fundraising activities on behalf of the shelter, including Cruisin’ fer Critters by the Predators Riding Club and the Run for the Roses Derby Party held in May by a group of shelter-loving people, said Cord. Both monetary contributions and donations of various supplies are needed to continue the shelter's mission. Volunteers also are needed at both the shelter and the

19 thrift store, which supports the Humane Society tremendously, said Cord. “We do have a lot of volunteers within the shelter to assist with photographing of animals; bathing pets; spending time with the animals. Our biggest volunteer need is for our thrift store where we have many opportunities and a flexible schedule to help. Plus, volunteers can still come over and visit the pets at any time,” she added. Adoption fees are $100 for dogs and $50 for cats under 1-year old. Cats older than 1-year could be adopted by approved adopters for a donation fee of their choosing. The cost covers spaying or neutering, basic immunizations, de-worming, microchip implant, heartworm check, rabies vaccination if the animal is old enough and a free health exam by the shelter’s participating veterinarian. The shelter is open There is an increase for adoptions Monday in unwanted kitten litters through Friday from during summer months 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If interested in adoption, stop by the Humane Society of Elmore County at 255 Central Plank Rd. in Wetumpka or call at 334-567-3377. Tales of the Past Local museums and displays embrace rich history of Elmore County's earlier years PHOTO BY BARRY CHRIETZBERG

E

lmore County is deeply steeped in history from its formation, original settlers, local town legends and historical events. In 1866, the county was officially created from parts of Autauga, Coosa, Montgomery and Tallapoosa counties. It was named after John Archer Elmore, a veteran of the American Revolution and an early settler of Alabama. Many of these stories and facts about the county’s rich history are found at the Elmore County Museum in downtown Wetumpka. Director Sharon Fox, a genealogist for 28 years, is enthusiastic and eager to spread her wealth of knowledge about the area’s historical figures and events. The exhibits Fox fashions for visitors to the museum are intriguing and captivating. Various stations and displays are set up throughout the building to detail artifacts of past events. The museum’s permanent collection includes paintings of former Wetumpka residents, authentic Civil War and world war uniforms, period clothing, musical instruments, a progression of textile tools and kitchen utensils used nearly 200 years ago. Fox is active in the local historical society, which helps fund the museum. Located at 112 S. Main St. in Wetumpka, the museum is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and The Elmore County Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For Museum displays information, call 334-567-5097. authentic artifacts from About a mile down the road is the the Civil War and world wars Elmore County Museum of Black History, established in 1986 as a landmark. The Elmore County Association of Black Heritage preserved the building and maintains the museum, which is filled with permanent collections of schools, churches and black families that have donated artifacts. The museum, located at 1004 Lancaster St., can be toured by appointment by calling Frazine Taylor at 334-567-8395 or Gwen Turner at 334-567-5330. Tallasee is home to another historical society that locates, preserves and protects the rich history of its town as well. The Talisi Historical Preservation Society’s home base is the former Mill Superindendent’s House, which was built in the

early 1900s. The historical society saved the building from being torn down, and the home features original pine floors, transoms and tile work. “Our mission is to preserve and teach local history through the arts, primarily theater,” said Jeanna Kervin. The historical theater’s first play, Tecumseh, was performed at the 200th commemoration of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 2014. Its latest production, Dear Mama: Letters and Music from World War II, an original script written by a Tallassee native and member of the THPS, was held at the newly renovated Mt. Vernon Theatre. Call 334-224-3522 for information. Perched between the Coosa and Tallapoosa rivers sits Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson Park, a 180acre historic site in Wetumpka. It is home to a recreated 1751 Fort Toulouse, Creek Indian houses and a partially restored 1814 American Fort Jackson. The state park attracts thousands of visitors each year with recreational and educational experiences. In November, the park hosts the state’s most authentic living history event, Alabama Frontier Days, which offers a unique look at the culture of pioneer life in the South. Each spring, a French and Indian War Encampment is held at the park includes camps, demonstrations, a mock battle and reenactments. The park also features campgrounds with RV hookups, hiking trails, an arboretum, picnic areas, a boat launch and a visitor’s center with a gift shop. The Friends of the Fort organization helps to fund maintenance and programs at Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson. The historic property of the Alabama Historical Commission, is located at 2521 W. Fort Toulouse Rd. in Wetumpka, and its hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week. For more information, visit ahc.alabama.gov. Elmore County’s rich history is preserved well throughout the many exhibits, programs and organizations that focus on its significance. There is no lack of information for those seeking to learn more about the area’s past.

lmore County is bursting with natural scenery, trails of all intensity levels and tons of opportunities to embrace the outdoors. Whether it’s a stroll along a river or an intense voyage through the woods, the trails and parks in the county have something to offer everyone. The Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association has been working since 2015 to create and expand offerings of nature’s beauty to the public through the construction of trails that are open to the public and free of charge. The organization has built __ miles of foot-path-only trails just south of Martin Dam on the Forever Wild Gothard-Yates Lake Wildlife Management Area, which includes nearly 6,000 acres of pine-hardwood hills and creek valleys on Yates Lake. The latest expansion of this system is the John B. Scott Trail, a 4.7-mile route offering views from the bluff along the Tallapoosa River, as well as picturesque views of nature. Overall a moderate trek, the trail does include two difficult sections. This area provides convenient access to Cherokee Bluffs – the only designated sport climbing area in Central Alabama. The bluffs can be accessed from the John B. Scott trail about 800 feet south of the parking lot and up the wooden steps near the climbers’ logo. Route #7 Roof-a-lufagus is on the cliff line and loops back to the steps. The Cherokee Bluffs Dam Railroad Trail follows the old railroad bed that was built in the early 1920s and used during the construction of Martin Dam. The trail includes 2.7-mile Lowline Railroad Trail and the 1/2-mile Highline Railroad Trail. Lowline trail hikers could either loop back to the parking lot or continue the rigorous trip up Saddle Rock Mountain – the highest point in Elmore County. With the help of Alabama Power Company and the Elmore County Commission, CRATA volunteers have built kiosks and trail signs, developed maps, put in a bridge, placed stepping-stones, graded the parking lot – which includes free public boat ramp access – and installed a gate for safe navigation. Also, surveillance equipment has been installed to minimize vandalism. The trails close at sunset, which gives hikers plenty of time to observe wildlife, flora and fauna along the routes. The Forever Wild WMA allows for hunting, fishing, bird watching, canoeing and wildlife viewing and serves as a nature preserve for educational studies. The trailhead is located on Gold Mine Road off Highway 50 on the west side of Yates Lake, south of Martin Dam. For more information, maps and directions, visit crata.org. Directly south of the CRATA trails lies Tallassee’s Talisi Riverwalk Trail, open to pedestrians and bicyclists. The path follows the existing

terrain of the land along the edge of Lake Talisi. Additional elements are included for a smooth, safe, and handicap accessible 1-mile trek. For the more adventurous, the Swayback Bridge Trail on Lake Jordan offers 12 miles of rugged hiking, mountain biking and trail-running paths that vary in intensity. This area is one of the most popular destinations for trail enthusiasts and was implemented by the Trail of Legends Association in 1998. TOLA is a nonprofit organization that designed a system of crisscrossed trails through Elmore County as a resource for the public. Located off U.S. Highway 231, the area contains four loop trails through dense forest and along hilly banks of the lake. Swayback is free to the public, but no horses or motorized vehicle are permitted. This trail section in Wetumpka is home to two annual events: Attack on Swayback and the Coosa River Challenge, are friendly enough for novices but also challenging for avid adventurers. For a tamer journey, in the same area, Gold Star Park offers a 3/4-mile concrete path that strolls under the Bibb Graves Bridge and along the Coosa River. Open for walking, jogging and family cycling, this park is often used for events in downtown Wetumpka, including festivals, vendors and music. It can be accessed from varying spots along

Main Street. The park provides opportunities to view bird species and highlights the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail. It also contains a gazebo, boat ramp access and a playground. Fishing is permitted on the river, but no dogs are allowed on the trail. In Millbrook, the Alabama Wildlife Federation is home to 5 miles of trails available for conservation education at the Alabama Nature Center in Lanark. The 350-acre property is used for training programs and nature hikes along the many fields, streams, wetlands and ponds throughout the property. The self-guided trail system offers interpretive signs along the way to help visitors identify encountered wildlife. Hikers could even bring lunch to enjoy under the ANC pavilion. Weekday conservation programs provide entertainment and education, and guided hikes one of ANC’s world-class biologists are available. For a full list of AWF’s events and offerings, visit alabamawildlife.org. In Elmore County, residents have a plethora of options to run, hike, climb and ride their way around town to view the sights, enjoy nature or spend quality time with friends and family.
