My wife, Meridith, and I have a 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son, and we’ve all fallen in love with the area. The educational opportunities afforded by the Alexander City Schools system continue to exceed expectations. With recent capital upgrades and plans for a new high school in the near future, it’s an exciting time for our commu nity’s educational system.

The chamber of commerce believes strongly in retaining our young talent and cultivating their entrepreneurial spirits. The Wildcat Entrepreneurs Academy is a yearlong program that teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own real businesses. WEA guides high school students through the process of starting and running a legitimate business or social movement over the course of a full academic year. The Alexander City Chamber is proud to provide the Gateway to Education Scholarship Assistance Program, an education/workforce development initiative that provides up to 64 credit hours of free tuition to Benjamin Russell High School graduating seniors attending Central Alabama Community College. Since 2006, Gateway has paid more than $2 million in tuition for 1,000-plus graduates of BRHS. There is no other program like Gateway in the state, and it’s another unique asset that makes our community great. Our family relishes the quality time we are blessed to spend on Lake Martin. With 880 miles of pristine shoreline, it is the most beautiful lake in the Southeast. Exploring Lake Martin is endless fun that provides unlimited tranquility, entertainment and memories. Lake destinations like Chimney Rock, Peanut Point and Wind Creek State Park are just a few of the sites to explore, although spending an afternoon on one of the island beaches is our personal favorite. Our family has just as much fun off the water in the Alexander City community, too. We love downtown Alexander City and consider it a unique treasure. A huge thanks to our Main Street organization, which promotes our historical down town area. With the great shopping, delicious food and quaint beauty, there is always something to enjoy in our downtown. My family loves that throughout the year there is always something to do in Alexander City and the Lake Martin com munity. The chamber hosts its annual Sun Festival each June, which encompasses 40-plus events over 10 days. It’s the perfect lead into Jazz Fest, a free two-day music festival held on the second weekend in June, which celebrated its 32nd anniversary in 2022. Friday night’s festivities take place in downtown Alexander City at Strand Park; then, the concert series moves to The Amp on Lake Martin on Saturday night. The goals of these events are to unite our community while attract ing tourists throughout the region. We are delighted by the thousands of people who attend these annual events that showcase our wonderful city. The chamber also oversees an extremely popular and progressive organization known as the Lake Martin Young Professionals. The group coordinates, collaborates and promotes events around Lake Martin that are social, volunteer or informational in nature. They connect the younger crowd in the area with activities to improve the careers and social lives of its members. Even if you aren’t “young” or “profes sional,” you are still welcome to partake in LMYP events like the Polar Plunge, Trivia Nights and Strand Sessions, a live concert series held in Strand Park on the first Thursday of every month from April through August. While our community enjoys a good time, it’s not all play. I’d like to personally invite you to the Lake Martin Innovation Center, conveniently located off U.S. Route 280 in Alexander City. This state-of-the-art business incubator promotes and nurtures start-ups and entrepreneurs, as well as existing busi nesses. The Innovation Center also offers co-working space for a minimal monthly rate, including 24/7 access to the facility, high-speed fiber internet, private conference rooms, compli mentary coffee and much more.

The reservoir was created when Alabama Power Company built a dam at a landmark known as Cherokee Bluffs on the Tallapoosa River. Put into service on New Year’s Eve 1926, the 2,000-foot-long dam at 168 feet in height holds back 31 miles of water. Its four turbines gener ate enough electricity to power thousands of homes. During World War II, Martin Dam supplied electricity to the country’s eastern seaboard, including Washington D.C., and was No. 7 on the list of enemy targets in the U.S. Following the war, the lake became a recreation area. Mill houses in town were moved to the lake and served as fishing cabins and weekend abodes. Boating and water ski ing grew in popularity, but fluctuating water levels barred the area’s growth, as the lake level could change by 20 feet or more without notice. There was no standard regulation of water levels until the 1970s when a contingent of businessmen took their concerns to Washington. They saw the potential for the lake to generate quality of life, as well as electricity. When the power company’s license to operate the dam was renewed in 1972, it included a projected summer pool level of 490 feet with a 10-foot drawdown of the water level in winter. By the mid-1990s, homes dotted the shorelines and a few businesses had sprung up to cater to homeowners and vaca tioners on the lake. Three nonprofit advocacy organizations formed during that time, and their work profoundly impacts your enjoy ment of the lake. Lake Martin Homeowners and Boat Owners Association addresses safety concerns and legisla tion; Lake Watch of Lake Martin monitors water quality; and Lake Martin Resource Association maintains hazard buoys, coordinates cleanups and more. Learn more about these organizations in the Boating & Fishing article on page 12 of this newcomers’ guide. In 2008, the power company’s license was up for renewal again. This time, it was clear that Lake Martin was the prominent economic engine for the area, and efforts were made to extend the summer pool by six weeks and reduce the winter drawdown to 7 feet, which would facilitate lake access to a large number of boat ramps and private docks throughout the winter. When the initial environmental impact study was released in 2014, the requested provisions were not included, but local media and stakeholders turned out en masse at a public hearing to voice their concerns. More than 600 homeown ers and business owners crowded the hearing venue, and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission personnel were overwhelmed with the response. The public outcry prompt

ed more research and modeling, and when the license was issued in December 2015, it included a mandated 7-foot drawdown and a conditional fall extension of the summer poolOncelevel.every six years, the winter pool level is drawn down 10 feet to kill off invasive weeds and provide access for dock maintenance and repairs. Winter 2021-2022 was the most recent 10-foot drawdown; the next 10-foot drawdown is scheduled for 2027-2028. A conditional fall extension is declared or denied on Sept. 1 of each year. If enough water is retained throughout the Tallapoosa and Coosa river basins, Alabama Power will maintain the summer pool level until Oct. 15. If the season has been a dry one and water levels are not at peak through out the river systems, the winter drawdown would begin on Sept.Another1. provision of the new license involves water level measurement. While previous measurement standards measured the summer pool level at 490 feet, the adoption of mean sea level feet was found to be more accurate at 491 feet. The water level did not change, but the measurement method did. Summer pool remains at 491 msl feet, and the winter pool level is 484 msl feet in normal years. In a 10-foot drawdown year, the winter level would be 481 msl feet.Alabama Power regulates all construction on Lake Martin. Permits are required for dock and boathouse main tenance and construction, seawall or rip-wrap placement and

Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trails Association boasts 26 miles along four footpath only trail locations near the east and south shorelines of Lake Martin. The Overlook trails were constructed in 2004 and feature stands of longleaf pine, native azaleas and charming mountain laurel teacup blossoms in season. Up the road from Overlook Park, the James M. Scott Deadening Trail features unique rock forma tions, including the Needle’s Eye and Jasmine Bluff, and a spectacular view of Lake Martin’s most popular landmark, Chimney Rock on Acapulco Rock Island.

Russell Lands has set aside some 25,000 acres of woods and streams for the preservation of nature for future genera tions at Lake Martin. The diverse habitat provides an excel lent venue for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding and serves as a staging area for Russell Lands’ naturalist programs and guided hikes. The woods are maintained as a working forest to help protect Lake Martin and ensure that it will retain its standing as one of the country’s cleanest lakes. Fishing License If you are an Alabama resident 65 years of age or older, you are exempt from the freshwater fish ing license requirement. Get out there and go fish ing!Everyone else must obtain a freshwater fish ing license. This is easy to do online at outdooral abama.com. Click on the fishing tab and then on the red Purchase Licenses button. Scroll down to the Freshwater bar and choose Resident Freshwater Fishing under the annual options; then, continue. A hard card is not required. Follow instructions for additional donations and checkout, and print your license or save it on your cellphone. Then, just grab a rod and go! All recreational licenses expire on Aug. 31, so you’ll need to repeat the process on Sept. 1.

Lake Watch Lake Martin takes a proactive approach to preserving and improving the quality of Lake Martin’s water. Lake Watch trains and provides sup plies to volunteer water monitors who regularly test the water for toxins and harmful bacteria. Lake Watch also maintains a local online swim alert sys tem, so anyone recre ating at Lake Martin could check the health status of the water at a number of popular area beaches, docks and swimming holes. The Alexander City Parks and Recreation Department offers many youth sports leagues, as well as other classes. “We are really a quality-of-life department,” explained Nick Hand, athletic supervisor with Alexander City Parks and Recreation. “We try to do anything we can to give the kids things to do.”

Programs in Dadeville Dadeville has many opportunities for kids to get involved in sports and activities to help them settle into the community. Two programs that are impacting a lot of the kids in the area are Dadeville Dixie Youth and Dadeville Youth Football and Cheerleading.DadevilleDixie Youth is a youth sports pro gram focused on helping kids learn and grow their skills. The program offers leagues for children ages 3 to 12 in T-ball, baseball and softball. The programs have grown over the last sev eral years, said Mike Simmons, the head coach and vice president of Dadeville Dixie Youth. “We had more kids sign up this year than we have in the past,” Simmons explained. Because of the progress the program has made, kids from surrounding areas, including Horseshoe Bend and Eclectic, are commuting to join the teams. Simmons’ heart is to give back to the community, and he is not alone – all the Dadeville Dixie Youth board members are invested in the kids. Their goal is to provide every child in the area with a way to get better at these sports and give them a chance to earn college scholar ships.“One coach changed my life,” Simmons said. “If I can make a difference in one kid’s life, that’s all that matters.”

The department is com munity-focused, with mem bers and volunteers who go the extra mile with their time and efforts. Youth sports offered by the department include baseball, both boys and girls basketball, cheerlead ing, football, soccer and softball. Along with these sports, the department is considering starting a flag football league, depend ing on kids’ interest in the sport.The parks and rec team frequently polls children to see what sports and activi ties they might be interest ed in trying. Hand said the parks and rec team’s desire is to gather the kids together and get them to get out and enjoy each other – to enjoy a structured, organized event. He explained that parents are typically more comfortable with more structure for their children – an environment where the kids are learning while having fun. Not only does the department host sports leagues, but it also conducts post-season camps. “We have had recent success with post-season sporting events and training,” Hand said. Many of the kids want to keep playing and training, even in the off-season. The department also provides sup port for the schools’ sports camps, as well as other com munity events held by other organizations. But sports are not the only thing the department has available for kids. “There is always something going on,” Hand said. Swimming lessons are offered during the summer, and a new life-skills class is opening soon. The parks and recre ation director, Sonny Wilson, shared that a class for chil dren ages 10 and up would be held to teach basic skills, such as how to change a tire, check the oil in a car and use a measuring tape.

The 11- to 12-year-old boys have won the state championship three years in a row. Other coaches are now recognizing their talent and remembering the names of the players. This team will be competing in the World Series this year, going in unde feated in both the district and the state. Simmons is very proud of his team and their hard work. “They have a lot of heart. They’re good teammates,” he said.While the current cut-off is 12 years old, Simmons is looking to open a Babe Ruth League next year for kids ages 13 to 15 years old. AAlexanderCity is a dog-friendly place to be. If you are new to town, or a new dog owner, there are a few things you need to know. There is a dog park at the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex between state Route 22 and Elkahatchee Road. Check it out if you have a pup that loves to run and play. The new fencing, seating and dog attractions make it the per fect place to let your dog burn off some energy. There is plenty of space for your furry friend to run around and get the zoomies out. Dogs are welcome on a leash at Strand Park in down town Alexander City, as well as The Town Green at Russell Crossroads and Wind Creek State Park. Just remember to always keep your pup on a leash and clean up after your pet. Keeping a bag dispenser on the leash is a great way to always be prepared. There are a few regulations you will need to be aware of and follow. The most important are that all dog owners must clean up after their pets (Ord. No. 2012-03, § 39), and all dogs must be on a leash or confined in a home, yard, etc., at all times (Ord. No. 2012-03, § 43). All dog owners must register their pets with animal control to receive a license and accompanying license tag, which is to be worn by the dog. In order to receive a license, you must have your dog’s rabies tag/certification (Ord. No. 2012-03, § 35). When the license is issued, animal control will provide a serially numbered tag or decal with the year the license was issued on it. Every dog is required to have its own license and tag, as the serial number will coordinate with the dog listed on the license (Ord. No. 2012-03, § 36). All dogs must wear both the rabies vaccination tag and the license tag on the collar/harness (Ord. No. 2012-03, § 37).Any dog that is trained for guard dog protection must be registered with the city police department, chief of police and animal control. DARE Power Park Located just 6 miles west of Dadeville lies the sandy beach cove of DARE Power Park. Owned and operated by Alabama Power Company, is open seasonally for picnics and recreation. APC Shoreline Recreation Leader Josh Yerby shared that two of his favorite amenities at the park are the adventure playground and the paved walking trail along the shoreline. The 30-acre park has three shaded pavilions, 13 picnic

Wind Creek State Park Wind Creek State Park is an amazing 1,444-acre park that hugs the Lake Martin shoreline just south of Alexander City. With entrance fees of $5 or less and annual passes available, this park is perfect for a quick day trip, a weekend getaway or a longer camping trip. There is so much to do once you enter the park, from hiking trails to guided horseback rides, ziplining tours, boat rentals, the swimming beach, a putt-putt course and great picnic“Weareas.have a large picnic area that has tables and grills spread throughout,” said Bruce Adams, park superintendent. There also is a community archery range and beautiful views of the lake from the silo tower. “A must-do, if you’ve never been to Wind Creek State Park, is the silo tower,” said Adams. “But you have to be ready to climb.” With 586 campsites, Wind Creek State Park is one of the largest state-operated campgrounds in the United States. The park also has cabins available – even three dog-friendly cab ins – as well as equestrian camping areas. Pennington Park’s biggest event of the year is Christmas in the Park, a huge holiday event involving the whole com munity and spanning nearly two months. Anyone who wants to participate can sign up for a 10-foot by 10-foot spot on which to build a Christmas display. Participants are encouraged to be unique and use their setup to represent their businesses and tell their stories. Last year, a total of 25,000 lights were set up in the park. This year the Pfitzners’ have a goal of 45,000 lights with more than 100 displays. The community will spend the month of November cov ering the park with displays; and then, on the Nov. 22, the Pfitzners will host The Grand Lighting of Pennington Park. Everyone will gather for hot cocoa and cookies, a choir will be singing, and at a time unknown to the crowd, the lights will be turned on. “We had an audible gasp last Christmas,” Pfitzner said. “It was just incredible.”

All throughout the year, Pennington Park hosts fun and exciting events. From the Easter Egg Dash to Art in the Park and the Farmers Market series in the summer, there is always something lively going on.

Pennington Park

In 2017, Kurt Pfitzner and his wife, Leigh, purchased the only remaining undeveloped plot of land in the heart of Dadeville with the dream of turning it into a venue for quality of life in the community. After a year of cleaning, building a pavilion and planting flower berms, the Pfitzners started hosting events. Since the first set of events in 2019, Pennington Park has become a treasure to the city of Dadeville. Truly fol lowing their motto, “A Park for all Seasons, a Venue for all Reasons,” the Pfitzners allow the community free use of the park for a plethora of events – weddings, baby showers and gender reveals, reunions and more – along with the ones they host for the community.

Horseshoe Bend National Park

In addition to educational programs, display and a bookstore inside the visitor center, the park offers guests a 3-mile self-tour around the battlefield, including a visit to Jackson’s vantage point during the conflict.

Hiking, picnicking and nature study are encouraged at the park. Bicycle riding is allowed on the loop road, and fishing is allowed at the Miller Bridge boat ramp. The boat ramp is a popular put-in point on the Harold Banks Canoe Trail, a 25-mile stretch of the Tallapoosa River that features wildlife viewings, shoals and unique plantlife. Horseshoe Bend National Military Park was estab lished to commemorate the 1814 battle in which Major Gen. Andrew Jackson’s army attacked 1,000 Red Stick Creek warriors fortified in a horseshoe-shaped bend of the Tallapoosa River. More than 800 Red Sticks perished in the battle that ended the Creek War and led to the cession of 23 million acres to the United States.

“The three covered pavilions are available for rent/reser vation but are first come first serve,” said Yerby. Pavilion reservations can be made by calling the park attendant office at 256-825-8386 during operating hours or by calling 205-664-6418.

Alexander City Theatre II ACT II provides live community theatre productions, free to the public, throughout each year, with a spectacu lar lineup of shows that offer something for everyone. Open auditions are held for the acting parts; however, volunteers are needed and welcome to assist with props, set construction, make-up, wardrobe and dozens of sup portive tasks. “We are very excited about our shows. A Midsummer Camp’s Dream featured 32 children from our commu nity at the end of summer. We have our cemetery tour in October – an outdoor event that will give everyone a chance to see people from the past come to life to tell the story of the founding of our town. Our Christmas performance will be The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and our spring production will be Inherit the Wind. Plus, we will definitely have another children’s performance next summer,” said Karen Kison, president of ACT II.

The Alex City Arts Council has been a part of the Lake Martin cultural scene for more than 50 years. The nonprofit organization brings highly respected travel ing musicians and theatrical performances to Alexander City, and the slate of entertainment for this season will not disappoint. On Oct. 20, the council will present Einstein!, a critically-acclaimed solo show about the early years of the genius’ life. Women Icons of Country – A Salute to Patsy, Loretta and Tammy will be per formed on Nov. 17. Valentine’s Day will get everyone in the swing of things with The Glenn Miller Orchestra, and the music will play on as patrons experience the dance, music and song of Celtic Angels Ireland on March 21. The nonprofit AACA offers an amazing opportunity for seasoned artists, as well as those who just dabble, to meet on the third Thursday of each month at the Sportsplex Senior Center in Alexander City. Dues are $20 per year, and the club encourages anyone interested to visit them and see what’s going on. Meetings begin at 10 a.m., and from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., the club pro vides an open studio for members and non-members to engage with one another while they work. “We really have a beautiful group who come to us from all over the state. We recognize that all art is good, whether it’s on canvas or wood or a jewelry piece or mixed-media. For instance, we made a club quilt last year that shows all our artists that we hope to display. We also want to help new artists purchase the correct materials, and we are happy to guide them,” said June Dean, spokesperson for AACA. The Lake Martin Area United Way, with the support of Alexander City residents and businesses, raises approxi mately a half-million dollars each year to assist 27 partner organizations. Besides needing volunteers to help in the office by answering phones and sorting dona tions, the organization needs help with its annual fashion show and silent auc tion fundraiser. This popular event has become part of the city’s social scene each fall and includes the participation of downtown Alexander City businesses. LMAUW also coordinates an annual Day of Action for Coosa and Tallapoosa counties, where community members volunteer in an all-hands-on-deck approach to repair, clean up and improve local schools and other locations. . Renew Our Rivers Opportunities abound for the Lake Martin community to work together in keeping roadsides and lake shore lines clean and litter free. Lake Martin Resource Association maintains part nerships with Wind Creek State Park, Lake Martin Dock Company, Alabama Power, Russell Lands, Green for Life, TowBoatUS, and Lake and Lake Martin Living magazines for the annual Renew Our Rivers cleanup. Volunteers have removed more than 160 tons of trash from the lake and surrounding roadsides since 2003. Items removed include tires, household items, abandoned boats and trash. . Volunteer Connection of Central Alabama Volunteer Connections of Central Alabama offers services and volunteer opportunities throughout the year. June is their major fundraiser, a bazaar featuring a flea market, baked goods, plant sale and book sale, which really kicks off the fall and winter season. Beginning in September, the VCCA offers Lunch and Learn for interested community members to bring a sack lunch and hear speakers on a wide range of topics. Volunteers are needed to serve complementary tea and dessert. Also in September, the agency trains volunteers to aid residents with the com plex Medicare Part D program. VCCA also trains volunteers to earn IRS certi fication to prepare taxes for the elderly and low-income individuals, to help with intake forms and file preparation.
