Woman survives vicious crash By RON COLQUITT For The Record

Dadeville police have identified the woman who was injured in a horrific crash Friday when her Toyota Camry collided with a tractor-trailer rig. Police chief David Barbour said Felicia Dianna Edwards, 24, of Camp Hill was the driver of the car that ended up pinned under the tractor-trailer rig in the accident shortly after noon on U.S. Highway 280 near LaFayette Street in Dadeville. Edwards remained at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika Wednesday. Citing confidentiality laws, hospital officials would not release Edwards’ condition. She was reported in stable condition as of Monday afternoon, according to police. Dadeville police Lt. Chris Williams told The Record earlier this week bad weather may have played a role in the crash. “She is one lucky lady,” said Patterson Truck Parts and Towing company driver Chris Deason, who helped free Edwards from her mangled car by using a heavyduty tow truck designed to lift and tow loaded tractor-trailer rigs. “The door post had her pinned down in the passenger seat and the truck’s tire was on top of her,” Deason told The Record. “I first saw her eyes when I crawled in around the tire to hook up the cables. I saw her face and couldn’t believe she was alive.” Ricky Patterson, owner of the towing company, added, “She is very lucky from the pictures I have seen. Usually, there is not a survivor.”

Dadeville students have special art time By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

Working in conjunction with members of the Dadeville-based art guild Everything’s Art, students from all six grades at Dadeville Elementary School had a special art session Monday morning. “We had between 50 and 60 students in total, from kindergarten to fifth grade,” Rick Hidding with Everything’s Art said. “The students had one hour to create their art based on Alabama’s bicentennial. There was no faculty there, it was just the students creating art.” Hidding said the guild provided all the art supplies the students needed, while the

students were given free reign to create any kind of art they felt inspired to make. All of the art centered around Alabama celebrating its bicentennial, a subject Hidding said was easier for the older students to grasp, while the younger students were told it was Alabama’s 200th birthday. “Virtually everything the students created (Monday) was painted, colored or sketched except for one third-grader,” Hidding said. “She brought her own paper and made a camellia with it, so we could call that a sculpture.” At the end of the hour, Hidding said the students’ artworks were photographed to be entered into an art contest Everything’s Art See ART • Page A5

Keep trash where it belongs in the garbage can

F

or years John Thompson has been preaching about cleaning up after ourselves. Everyone knows how clean the lake is but it appears some could not care less about where our drinking water comes from and where our children and grandchildren play. Thompson has given himself tirelessly to help educate the public and especially youth about the importance of properly throwing trash away. Trash thrown on the ground can have adverse affects on everything, including Lake Martin. The little bit of oil someone allows to escape on the ground can quickly get into a stream and into the lake. The wrapper or bottle thrown from the window of a car creates not only an eyesore but can hurt wildlife and possibly make it to the lake as well. For well over a decade, Thompson’s efforts have led to the removal of tons of trash, including tires, chairs, bottles and cans from the lake. In recent years, trash walks under Thompson’s leadership have seen tons of garbage carelessly dumped picked up by volunteers. Just last Saturday, 11 volunteers picked up 33 bags of trash from roadsides in the area. Many of these volunteers are the same ones who go out time and time again to make the area look presentable. The Record commends Thompson and the volunteers who give of their time for us. The Record also wants to challenge a new group of volunteers to step up and clean up. It is easy. Just grab a bag and start walking, picking up trash along the way. You don’t need to wait for the organized events. Get your neighbor or friend and walk down your street. Get your Sunday School class to take an outing together just walking, chatting and picking up trash. But it can be even easier — just don’t dump or throw out trash to begin with. The Record encourages those who think about throwing a wrapper out of the car window to think twice. How long would it be before you get home or to a place with a trash can to properly dispose of it?

Government shutdowns have negligible effects Our Mission

T

rump is going to shut down the government! We’re all doomed! Many have admired the wit and wisdom of Samuel Clemens and Will Rogers, both of whom made astute and profound observations about politicians and other ill-reputed characters during their respective eras. We need more humor during the Trump era to counteract the utter cataclysmic pronouncements and prophecies drummed up by the Uber left media and political establishment. If a fraction of Trump haters’ predictions had come to pass, we’d be living in the worst economic depression in history; fighting World War III on four fronts (North Korea, Iran, Russia and China); the polar icecaps would have melted, flooding coastlines around the world; and no one would have access to healthcare anywhere in America. And yet, the naive around us continue to fear and dread the very worst predictions because Trump is a really bad person. Establishment politicians and national media sensationalize government shutdowns to frighten the most vulnerable and naive among us. In 2011, stories circulated the government would shut down unless compromises were made. The president at the time falsely alarmed vulnerable and naive Americans in a CBS interview. Scott Pelley: “Can you tell the folks at home that, no matter what happens,

DANIEL L. GARDNER Columnist the Social Security checks are going to go out on August the 3rd? There are about $20 billion worth of Social Security checks that have to go out the day after the government is supposedly going to go into default.” Obama: “Well, this is not just a matter of Social Security checks. These are veterans’ checks, these are folks on disability and their checks. There are about 70 million checks that go out each month.” Pelley: “Can you guarantee, as president, that those checks will go out on August the 3rd?” Obama: “I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven’t resolved this issue because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it.” Before anyone panics, in every government shutdown to date, all the checks mentioned above have always gone out on time to recipients. In fact, no one has ever not received a government check due to a shutdown and no one has ever lost a job due to a shutdown. Why would politicians and media frighten vulnerable and naive people with such rhetoric? Why would politicians and media outright lie in order to gain support for their narra-

tives? Congress is debating a bill to keep the government open. President Trump has asked Congress to add about $3 billion more for border security, which includes money to build a wall on our Mexican border. Democrats and the media say the additional money is a huge waste of taxpayer money! What a hoot! How much money has Nancy Pelosi wasted on her own personal federal air transportation to and from California? How much taxpayer money has gone to settle sexual harassment claims against members of Congress? Do Democrats really want to talk about wasting $3 billion in a $854 billion spending bill? Samuel Clemens said, “Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.” Will Rogers said, “A flock of Democrats will replace a mess of Republicans. It won’t mean a thing. They will go in like all the rest of ’em. Go in on promises and come out on alibis.” Democrats warning about wasting $3 billion? Got to see the humor in that! Daniel L. Gardner is a syndicated columnist who lives in Mississippi. You may contact him at PJandMe2@gmail.com or interact with him on the Clarion-Ledger website at www.clarionledger.com.

Keep pets safe this holiday season

Dear Editor, This holiday season, American Humane — the country’s first national humane organization — wants to remind pet owners to ensure the holidays are just as merry and bright for their furry friends. As you deck the halls, keep in mind that many decorations can be dangerous for pets: garland, ribbons, pine needles,

and some types of festive plants — like mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias — can all pose serious health threats if ingested. Pet owners should also remember to hang breakable ornaments out of reach of wagging tails or curious cats, as broken decorations can be harmful if swallowed or stepped on with tiny paws. As tasty treats fill holiday tables, I make sure my own dog Daisy is

kept away from chocolate candy and baked goods with chocolate — although tempting to her indiscriminate palate, they can be lethal to pets. With a few precautions, your own four-legged family members can have a holly, jolly holiday season too. Dr. Robin Ganzert President and CEO American Humane Washington, D.C.

is holding in conjunction with the bicentennial celebrations. The contest is open to all students in the Tallapoosa County School System, and any artistic medium can be used to create the work. All entries have to be submitted to Everything’s Art by Jan. 8, with the winning entries being put on display at Raining Dogs Gallery during the month of February. Although some of the students did

not finish and took their art home with them to finish, Hidding said he saw a great deal of talent from the Dadeville Elementary students. He said everyone was enthusiastic about Monday’s special event, with the school making Everything’s Art feel welcome throughout the day. “We would like to do this next year too,” Hidding said. “We would like to make this a regular thing.”

The Dadeville Record

Christmas is one of the biggest holidays of the year. It is celebrated every year on December 25 by people around the globe. Christmas holds many traditions. A tradition is a custom that is passed down through a family over time. For some families, celebrating the birth of Christ is the most important part of the holiday. Hanging wreaths and holly in homes and businesses, decorating Christmas trees, and hanging strands of bright Christmas lights outdoors are popular at this time of year. Baking cookies that are given as gifts or left for Santa Claus to eat are popular with children and adults. Cooking special foods that remind us of our families, singing Christmas Carols, and sending out cards are also traditions for many people. Christmas is known as the season of giving. Exchanging gifts with loved ones is perhaps the most popular tradition on Christmas. Children anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus who leaves them gifts on Christmas Eve. This legend began several hundred years ago with Saint Nicholas, a man who was credited with performing many miracles. In Germany, he is known as Kris Kringle. In many other parts of the World, including the U.S., he is known as Santa Claus. His legend spread across Europe and then to the rest of the World because he gave children gifts and performed miracles on Christmas Eve! Merry Christmas!

REBELS SPLIT WITH COOSA Rebels upend Cougars in area girls hoops tilt

Lizi Arbogast / The Record

Reeltown’s Fred Willis looks for a way around Central Coosa defenders Jovon Richardson (14) and Josh McGhee (42) on Thursday night.

By GRIFFIN PRITCHARD For The Record

After matching the hometown Reeltown Rebels shot for shot early in Thursday’s Class 2A Area 8 tilt, Central Coosa’s girls basketball team fell short down the stretch. Reeltown picked up a 46-30 victory to put its first mark in the win column this season. According to Rebel coach Will Solomon, the win was a product of their 55-18 loss to Benjamin Russell earlier in the season. “I was really pleased with our intensity tonight and the way we played as a team,” Solomon said. “We didn’t have a real good outing last Friday against Benjamin Russell. We came back on Monday and Tuesday and worked through some things. I feel like we are playing more as a team right now.” The Rebels (1-4, 1-0) jumped ahead 13-8 following a Kenzie Hornsby 3. Eryn Wells added a 2-pointer to the Reeltown tally. “We hit a couple of 3s and we were able to get inside a couple of times and score,” said Solomon. “Then we stepped up our transition game and forced them to turn the ball over and take bad shots.” Hornsby sank 2 of 3 free throws after being fouled outside the arch. On Hornsby’s miss, Makayla Langston grabbed the rebound and converted it into points. Langston finished the night with six points and nine rebounds. Hornsby and Mikia Jones contributed seven points each. The Rebels were led by Taniya Haynes and her 21 points, which went along with five rebounds. “I think the biggest thing for (Haynes) is what she does See REBELS • Page B2

Second-half Coosa surge stymies Rebels By GRIFFIIN PRTICHARD For The Record

Jadarius Brown came off the bench and got hot in the second half, scoring 15 points on five 3-point shots as the Cougars turned a double-digit halftime lead into a 61-40 Class 2A Area 8 victory Thursday night in Reeltown. Brown — the Cougars’ sixth man Thursday night as they were working without starting guard Noel Jones — stepped in and played his role to a T, according to Central Coosa coach Jeremy Freeman. “It’s always good to have someone that can come in off the bench and score,” Freeman said. “But that’s his job and that’s something we are working

on to make sure he becomes consistent and confident out there doing that. But he also has to do his job on the other end of the court as well.” Defense proved to be the difference Thursday as different Cougar combinations stepped in to contest and harass Rebel shooters from one end of the floor to the other. “That’s what we pride ourselves in; your defense is going to win it,” Freeman said. “Make your free throws and force turnovers. I tell them all the time I get more excited about a great defensive play than I do a dunk or a 3-pointer or anything like that. Defense is something the other team has to be responsible for.” The Rebels (0-5, 0-1) trailed

12-8 after the end of the first period and then fell behind 34-18 at intermission. Trey O’Neal, who had 11 points through the first quarter and a half, left the game midway through the second period with an injury and did not play in the second half. Keke Hughely and Fred Willis finished the night with seven points each. Coming out of the break, the Cougars (7-1, 3-0) pushed their lead to 21 points and in the fourth period, threatened to blow the game open before Freeman began clearing his bench. Coosa’s Omar Gaddis finished the night with 11 points. Teammates Jovon Richardson and CorJavion Marbury posted

a combined 17. The Cougars will travel to Montgomery after Christmas to take part in the Dwight Madison Roundball Classic at Carver. “It’s going to be teams from the state of Georgia and Alabama and a mix of classifications all the way from us being the smallest to some 6As and one of the teams from Georgia is from their higher classifications as well,” Freeman said. “You want to get exposure and see what’s going on somewhere else, but you take pride in competing. We want to win, but if we don’t, we want to see what the other schools are doing that we may be able to do to help us reach our ultimate goal of winning a state championship.”

It’s shaping up to be a good hoops season

E

veryone enters a new sports season with high hopes of going undefeated and winning a state championship. However, for a lot of teams, those goals are just a pipe dream. I always think it’s best for coaches to set their expectations as realistically as possible. That’s not to say a coach or a team should ever give up or expect to lose, but setting a goal of winning state when a team isn’t likely to go over .500 is unnecessary. I really liked what Dadeville wrestling coach Fred Ford had to say about his objectives for the season. “We really have a lot of personal goals,” he said during the preseason. “We have several student-athletes that are on the team and they want to accomplish something — whether it’s discipline, weight loss, if it’s getting in better shape or for our crossover sports, for football to get a little more aggressive and learning leverage, they have a lot of personal goals. “That’s going to have to be what we judge ourselves on at the end of the day. Are we hitting the marks of what we’re trying to accomplish?” While there are a few teams around the area that will need to focus on constant improvement and measuring success in their own See ARBOGAST • Page B2

Alabama duck hunters hope for repeat of last season

ways, it does seem to be shaping up to be a good winter season, especially on the basketball court. The first installment of the Alabama Sports Writers Association high school basketball rankings were released earlier this week, and quite a few teams in the Tallapoosa Publishers Inc. coverage area made the top-10 cut. Central Coosa’s boys team was ranked the highest for area schools for AHSAA squads. The boys, who were 6-1 at the time of voting, were ranked No. 4. As of Friday afternoon, the Coosa boys had moved to 7-1 with their only loss to undefeated LaFayette. Also sitting in the top 10 were Dadeville’s boys at No. 9 in Class 3A and Tallassee’s boys at No. 8 in 5A. For AISA teams, Edgewood was ranked in the top 10 for both boys and girls — the boys were at No. 4 and the girls No. 10. Although it’s hard to put much stock in the very first rankings of the year, it does give a good idea of how things are going to shake out after the opening weeks of the season. And there are quite a few teams around our coverage area to keep your eyes out for, even if they didn’t make the opening ranks. Benjamin Russell’s girls team has jumped out to a 5-0 start as of Friday afternoon, and the Wildcats have been absolutely annihilating their opponents. They had an average margin of victory of 36.6 points per game through their first five. Another team to watch is Horseshoe Bend’s girls, who are on fire lately. After starting the season with back-to-back losses, the Generals have reeled off six straight wins including big wins over 2A Area 9 opponent Woodland. Over in Elmore County, there’s a pair of boys teams who could make some noise. Stanhope Elmore’s boys team is 8-2 with its only losses coming against Tallassee by five points and Brewbaker Tech, which has scored at least 75 points in three of its four games this year. And although Wetumpka sits at just 2-7, it’s looked a lot better since the return of its starters who were busy on the football field. The Indians have won two in a row since then. Obviously it’s still extremely early in the season, and we’re still about two months away from the postseason. But it’s certainly shaping up to be an exciting basketball season around Tallapoosa County, and I’m ready to watch it continue to heat up.

The snowstorm that skirted just north of the state recently should be good news for Alabama’s duck hunters. The waterfowl seasons in Alabama are always weatherdependent. If it’s cold and snowy north of us, the birds will migrate in significant numbers into Alabama. Without the cold or precipitation to cover their food sources, the birds won’t make it this far south. Seth Maddox, Migratory Gamebird Program Coordinator with the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) Division, said duck numbers should be increasing soon even though the numbers were down when the annual aerial survey took place the week before the season opened. “We were down a little bit on our preseason counts,” Maddox said. “We had a few cold fronts and a lot of rain. That spread the birds out a lot. I think it pushed some of the early migrators further south. That left us with a decent amount of birds but not a good number for opening weekend.” Maddox said the long-term weather forecast bodes well for waterfowl hunters in Alabama. “It’s shaping up to be similar to last year,” he said. “They’re predicting several disturbances up in the Arctic region with some polar vortexes, which will give us some cold weather. Last year, we had some sub-freezing temperatures — below-average temperatures — for a week or so throughout the season. I think that’s going to end up giving us a season similar to last season.” That would be great news for waterfowlers, considering the harvest for the 2017-2018 season was up 85 percent over the similar period a year earlier. “That’s a significant increase,” Maddox said. “We had about 14 days during the season where temperatures stayed below freezing. That cold weather and snow north of us really pushed birds into Alabama.” Maddox said the wood duck harvest last season was especially high, which means a good many woodies came from the north. “The cold weather pushed lots

The most likely duck spots in Alabama include the Tennessee River basin in north Alabama, the Mobile-Tensaw Delta in south Alabama as well as the Lake Eufaula area and west central Alabama in the Demopolis area and other lakes on the Tombigbee River and Millers Ferry on the Alabama River near Camden. The number of duck hunters in Alabama has apparently peaked with no downturn in the past several years. “The number of licensed duck hunters seems to be holding steady around 30,000 for the last three to four years,” Maddox said. “That’s a good thing.” Maddox said WFF has plans Seth Maddox / Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division to expand enhancements for This group of young hunters had a successful outing during Alabama’s the waterfowl population in the Youth Waterfowl Special Hunt. coming years. “We’ve got big plans ahead, be a pleasant surprise with 7,000 of wood ducks down,” he said. partnering with Ducks Unlimited, “We get some migration of wood birds counted, which is higher to spend some substantial ducks from northern states every than the five-year average. expenditures over the next “There were a bunch of year. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You generally get your way. In fact, part of your stubbornness might come from past experiences that involved successfully holding out in order to get more of what you wanted. A friend inspires you to go for what you want. Tonight: Use care with spending. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You feel as though you’re in your element. If you keep going and don’t stop, fatigue could overcome you. Dadeville street department receives new limb truck By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

The Dadeville street department will be picking up limbs and cut brush off the side of the city’s roads in a new limb truck which was delivered Wednesday morning. “It arrived here in Dadeville shortly before 11 a.m.,” city clerk Debbie Minor said. “Everybody was very excited for it to be here.” The 2019 Ford F-750 Brush Hawg

Grapple Loader was a much-needed piece of equipment for the street department, according to street superintendent Eugene Collum. “We’re really excited to get it in,” Collum said. “We’ve been needing a new truck for a while now.” Collum said the new truck is better than the previous one, although a few things are slightly different in the new vehicle. The new truck can carry 26 cubic yards of material, compared to

24 cubic yards in the previous truck. Outside of these changes, the most noticeable being several levers in the cab moving in the opposite direction from the former truck, Collum said things were similar overall. “The product manager stayed for over an hour, training our employees on the truck,” Minor said. Collum added, “The manager was really good at explaining everything to us.” Minor said the

The two also said the truck was ready to be put into service immediately. “It has a number of new features on it,” Minor said. “It should be easier to service Prevents 4 out of 5 HPV than our previous

After analyzing the area where Highway 22 widens to four lanes through town, ALDOT recommended upping the speed limit in front of where the former New Site School was located from 35 to 45 mph. After reading the ordinance prepared by the state, the council unanimously approved the state’s recommendation, making the speed on Highway 22 uniform through the fourlane section of roadway. The New Site Town Council also handled the following items: • The council approved a resolution to obtain a grant for repaving the walking trail behind town hall. Blasingame said an engineering study found the cost to complete the project would be $141,000, while the grant will cover 80 percent of the cost, or approximately $112,800. “Everything is looking good,â€?
