Tallassee teen charged New bond hearing for with murder McDaniel set Jan. 27 By DAVID GRANGER Staff Writer
Malik Johnson, 18, of Tallassee is being held in Elmore County Jail on charges of murder and robbery in the Sunday death of Stephvon Johnson Adams, 26, also of Tallassee. Johnson was arrested Monday night after Adams’ body was found in the road near the intersection of New Quarters and Taylor Roads near Tallassee. “When deputies found Mr. Adams, it appeared that he had several gunshot wounds to the upper torso,” Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said Monday morning. “There was also a good amount of blood in the road and it was unclear whether he had been struck or that was from the gunshots.” Franklin said the only thing found on Adams was a set of keys in his pockets, which turned out to be crucial to his identification when at about 10 a.m. authorities received a call that a vehicle was partially blocking the roadway near the Friendship community,
approximately five miles from the original scene. Noticing that the vehicle in the roadway was a Jeep and that the keys found in Adams’ pocket were Jeep keys, deputies tried to pop the trunk with the key’s remote and, according to Franklin, “it popped right open. We knew then that this vehicle was involved.” Franklin said after deputies and members of the narcotics task force worked the case most of the day, Johnson was picked up at about 7 p.m. and taken in for questioning. “Within about two hours, it became apparent that he was involved,” Franklin said. “Later, he confessed that he had fired several gunshots at Adams with a .22 caliber handgun while they sat in the car. He said Adams then tried to exit the car and stumbled in front of it. Johnson said he slid across the console, took control of the car and ran over Adams multiple times.” Franklin said the argument between Johnson and Adams focused around money and drugs. He said Johnson’s charges included robbery because he allegedly took money and a cell phone from the victim. Johnson is a former Tallassee High School basketball star.

Matthew Clate McDaniel will have to wait until after the holidays to have a judge reconsider his release pending trial in the murder case against him. A new bond hearing has been set for Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Tallapoosa County Courthouse before Judge Kim Taylor. McDaniel, who is charged with murder in the Jan. 17 shooting death of Norman Dean Crayton, had been free on a $250,000 bond until Oct. 26 when Judge Taylor ordered McDaniel back to jail following his arrest in Auburn on misdemeanor criminal mischief charges. Since a revocation hearing on Oct. 26, McDaniel has remained in the Tallapoosa County Jail. As part of the revocation, Judge Taylor said that if legal issues in Auburn were handled and other safeguards were set up, he would reconsider the revocation. Defense attorney Davis Whittelsey filed a motion on Nov. 10 seeking a new bond hearing. According to court records, the signed order setting the Jan. 27 hearing date was entered by Taylor last Tuesday, Dec. 6. Whittelsey’s motion claims that an agreement has been negotiated in Auburn that requires McDaniel to serve 50 hours of community
service, and pay court costs and restitution in exchange for the case being “nolle prossed.” The motion also says that McDaniel’s behavior, damaging a gate arm in an Auburn parking deck, “arose out of the consumption and/or excess consumption of alcohol.” The motion further claims that if McDaniel is released on bond, he will: • Submit to the Court Referral office to follow any recommendations made by the office. • Submit to appropriate substance abuse counseling and/or treatment. • Wear an ankle monitoring device and/or other device that monitors defendant’s whereabouts. • Comply with a reasonable curfew. The motion to set bond with conditions is the latest legal move in a case that has been one of the most talked about cases in recent memory. McDaniel was arrested in the early morning hours of Jan. 17 after hunters found Crayton’s body in a wooded area off Barron’s Bridge Road south of Dadeville. McDaniel saw his case bound over to the Tallapoosa County Grand Jury after a June 28 preliminary hearing where investigators in the case testified that McDaniel admitted that he had shot and killed Crayton in the early morning hours of Jan. 17, but said it was self-defense.

Council discusses impact of Mott’s fire By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer
A month after the sky around Dadeville was glowing orange on Thanksgiving night from a fire at Mott’s Woodyard – the fire is still burning. Just driving around the North Loop, one can see smoke still coming from the mounds of mulch created by contractor removing timber from the Sabal Trail Pipeline right of way. At a recent Dadeville City Council
meeting, the fire and efforts to control it were discussed as Dadeville Fire Chief Keith Wilkerson gave his monthly report to the council. “In November we had a busy month, we had 22 calls,” Wilkerson told the council. “A lot of them were dealing with the fire on the North Loop.” Wilkerson explained to the council that he has been meeting with the contractor. “I have met with the guy that has stuff piled up over there and about
what they going to do to control the smoke. He is supposed to get back with me.” Dadeville Mayor Wayne Smith said he wants to make sure that the city is not left with a mess. “We still have a little smoldering over there,” Smith said. “We want to see that he stays on top it and it does not become a nuisance. The smoke has died down.” Cliff Williams / The Record The smoke may have died down, Smoke still disseminates from a pile of mulch burned in a but driving around the North Loop November fi re at Mott’s Woodyard. Thomas sentenced to life for kidnapping, strangulation By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer
Fifth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Tom Young Jr. sentenced Eddie Donnell Thomas to life Monday after his conviction on charges from a Tallassee burglary, kidnapping and strangulation. Four years ago there wasn’t a single Advanced Placement Course offered at any of the schools in the Tallapoosa County School System. Thursday the Tallapoosa County School System was honored as the only system in the state to earn a spot on the 7th Annual AP District Honor Roll. In a release from the Alabama Department of Education, it was announced that the local system was one of just 433 school districts in the United States and Canada to earn the designation from the AP College Board. “That’s a long way to come in just four years,” said Tallapoosa County Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe Windle. “Four years ago we didn’t offer the classes and had no students taking them. So, to be honored with this is really something that we are proud of.” To be included on the 7th Annual Honor Roll, Tallapoosa County Schools was required to, since 2014, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the number of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Congratulations to our county schools for receiving AP honor
I
t’s been said in a variety of ways that children are our future. This week a local school system was honored for investing in that future. It’s with great pleasure this week we were able to report that the Tallapoosa County School system was honored as the only system in the state to earn a spot on the 7th Annual AP District Honor Roll. Tallapoosa County Schools was one of 433 school districts in the United States and Canada to earn the designation from the board. According to the release from ALDOE, “reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP. That’s stellar progress considering four years ago there wasn’t a single Advanced Placement Course offered at any of the schools in the Tallapoosa County School System. “That’s a long way to come in just four years,” said Tallapoosa County Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe Windle. “Four years ago we didn’t offer the classes and had no students taking them. So, to be honored with this is really something that we are proud of.” In 2016, more than 4,000 colleges and universities around the world received AP scores for college credit, advanced placement, or both, and/or consideration in the admission process. We should take pride in the fact that not only are we pushing out college ready students, we’re also increasing access to better education opportunities locally. “Congratulations to all the teachers and administrators in this district who have worked so tirelessly to both expand access to AP and also to help students succeed on the AP Exams,” said Trevor Packer, the College Board’s head of AP and Instruction. “These teachers and administrators are delivering real opportunity in their schools and classrooms, and students are rising to the challenge.” We too want to thank the teachers and administrators for all of their hard work pouring into our youth. We believe in you, our students and their futures.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
hristmas. It’s means many things to many people. Mostly, it means the birth of Jesus and conjures up the Biblical story of the wise men following a star to the divine child lying in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes. But Christmas also means the exhange of gifts with those we love and looks of wonder on the faces of our children, grandchildren and other loved ones on a magical Christmas morning. I was fortunate to be raised in a household that placed importance on both of those aspects of the season. My parents made sure we knew what the season was really about, but would also go to the ends of the earth to find the presents on our lists. Rarely do I recall a request that wasn’t filled. My Christmases were all wonderful in the most literal sense of that word. My grandmother and grandfather weren’t as well-to-do as my parents, but my grandmother never disappointed. She made and gave homemade gifts that I realize today were the best of all. Once, not able to afford to buy me a stuffed toy, she made me a stuffed kangaroo, complete with a baby stuffed kangaroo inside its pouch. But Christmas wasn’t without its tragedies. Like the time I got a Wilt Chamberlain-autographed basketball and on my first
DAVID GRANGER Managing Editor
shot with it, impaled it on a splinter protruding from our backyard basketball goal’s creosote supporting post. It stuck there, letting out a sickening deflating whimper. Then there was the time my brother received a BB gun with – as he would soon discover – a plastic stock. When he set it on a heater at my grandmother’s house, he came back to a literal hot mess. There were the baseball gloves, the footballs, the Auburn football uniforms and the bicycles through the years. There were tears shed when things broke too quickly, usually on Christmas Day. In my family, there were fruit and fireworks and giant candy canes. Between the candy canes and the Lifesavers books (remember those?), dentists made millions. And there were those odd, almost forgotten gifts that should’ve never been. There were the Creepy Crawlers, where children like me were encouraged to use high heat to turn liquid into jelly-like bugs and other critters. Who can forget lawn darts and the havoc they created (Thankfully, I never owned any, so I’m here today to
write this column.)? Or clackers, the ultimate in arm-bruisers? With the love and care of my parents and grandparents, I survived it all. Now, it’s my turn. I see now why my mother and father would search high and low for gifts for us. I see now why my grandmother would sew until her fingers bled to create something especially for me. I see now why my father’s step grew jauntier when he tucked a little more than he had originally intended into the Salvation Army kettle. I see now why Mom took so much pleasure in buying a toy for a tot she didn’t know. It’s plain and simple and basic and something all of us have but always need more of. It’s love. When I see the eyes of my three grandchildren light up, when I feel their arms around my neck in appreciation, when I hear their shrieks of joy, I am loved. Which brings us right back to the first word of this column. Christmas. It’s as pure as the season’s first snow, as magical as a reindeer’s flight. Christmas is love. Merry Christmas, everyone! ‘Easy as pie is just a phrase’
ver the past few weeks, I’ve tried new things. I went crappie fishing. I cooked a drunk chicken on the grill. Heck, I even cranked up a chainsaw and cut my own wood. One would think my natural progression would have had me wrestling a bear or barking for the Yak woman this week, but that was not the case. Instead, I decided to do something easy. I donned an apron and made a pie. I’m a pretty darn good cook; however, other than brownies and Rice Crispy treats, I’d never attempted to make any other kind of dessert. When a friend gave me a handful of homegrown lemons, I knew I had to do something special with them, which is when the idea of making a homemade lemon meringue pie was hatched. Speaking of hatched, I had all the ingredients necessary, with the exception of eggs — and cornstarch – I mean, seriously, who has cornstarch in their pantry? I didn’t even know corn had starch. Anyone who has cornstarch on hand likely has a can of Crisco on the oven and an impressive Cool Whip bowl collection in the cabinets. At this point, all I’m missing is the can of Crisco. I knew it was not going to be as easy as I’d hoped when I discovered I no longer had a glass pie plate. I used to have a couple of them, but
JODY FULLER Guest Columnist
they apparently got lost over the last couple of years. I was certain I had an aluminum pie pan somewhere, and I did, but it was out in my garden nailed to a pole. So, it was back to square one, or, better yet, one square glass dish. It wasn’t pretty, but I was going to make it work. The lemon filling was rather easy to prepare. The only puzzling aspect for me was the zesting of the lemon. I mean, it was downright Pythagorean Theorem puzzling, but after a little online tutorial, I had it down. The key was not to cut into the white part of the peel. That would have made the whole baking adventure, bittersweet—pun intended. The most important element in creating an aesthetically pleasing lemon meringue pie is the meringue itself. Yes, indeed; it’s all about the cow slobber, and the cow slobber is all about the eggs. Believe it or not, I’d never separated an egg, so I had to Google. It took 44 years, but I can finally check that block. It turned out to be fairly simple process. A little piece of shell fell into one of
the bowls, but fortunately I learned in Mrs. Swarthout’s high school cooking class how to fish out the tiny pieces of eggshell simply by using the larger shell. It almost acts like a magnet. It’s really simple. In fact, it’s easy as pie. Wait—Hold that thought. The instructions called for me to whip the egg whites until they became foamy, but that never happened. If I had whipped for five more minutes, I would have been foamy at the mouth. It was a lot of work with no payoff. The recipe called for white sugar, but I used cane sugar. I don’t know if that was detrimental to the development of my cow slobber or not, but the cow slobber was not to be. Nope. My lemon pie was topped with cow slime. Pie ain’t easy, so I retract my previous statement. After a quick trip to the oven, my pie was ready. I’ll be honest; it was the most pitiful looking, meringuemissing, square pie I’ve ever laid my eyes on, but, truthfully, it tasted pretty darn good. Next time, I think I’ll skip the cow slobber altogether and just go with Cool Whip. That should make the whole process easy as pie. Besides, I could use the bowl. Plus you have to appreciate the students who saw the merit in taking these classes and stepped up and worked hard to find success. “Let’s face it, some students would look at the classes and the test and the end as difficult and figure it would be more in their best interest to take the traditional route and excel there. But we have found students across all demographic lines that have joined the program and are doing well. It is a great honor and we are excited about the progress that has been made.” According to the release from ALDOE, “reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP. National data from 2016 show that among Black/African American, Hispanic, and Native American students with a high degree of readiness for AP, only about half are participating. “The first step to getting more of these students to participate is to give them access. Tallapoosa County Schools is committed to expanding the availability of AP courses among prepared and motivated students of all backgrounds.” “Congratulations

With that history Fifth Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Duerr asked that Thomas be sentenced outside of the guidelines for the crimes under the habitual offender status, an argument Assistant District Attorney Mike Weldon presented to Young Monday. “He has a track record,” Weldon said. “He has done nothing but crime after crime after crime. At this point, I don’t know if he can do anything but commit another crime.” At the Dec. 5 trial, a jury took 17 minutes to find Thomas guilty where the victim testified, a video showing the encounter was shown and a U.S. Marshall who help apprehend Thomas testified. The video showed Thomas busting through a door of a Washington Boulevard home in Tallassee May 3 of this year, moving hastily across the room to a victim known to Thomas

to all the teachers and administrators in this district who have worked so tirelessly to both expand access to AP and also to help students succeed on the AP Exams,” said Trevor Packer, the College Board’s head of AP and Instruction. “These teachers and administrators are delivering real opportunity in their schools and classrooms, and students are rising to the challenge.” According to information supplied by the College Board, “helping more students learn at a higher level and earn higher AP scores is an objective of all members of the AP community, from AP teachers to district and school administrators, to college professors. Many districts are experimenting with initiatives and strategies to determine how they can expand access and improve student performance at the same time. In 2016, more than 4,000 colleges and universities around the world received AP scores for college credit, advanced placement, or both, and/ or consideration in the admission process. Inclusion on the AP District Honor Roll is based on a review of three years of AP data, from 2014 to 2016, looking across 37 AP Exams, including world language and culture. The following criteria were used. According to the College Board, districts must: • Increase
participation/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts, and at least 11% in small districts; • Increase or maintain the percentage of exams taken by black/African American, Hispanic/ Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native students; and • Improve or maintain performance levels when comparing the 2016 percentage of students scoring a 3 or higher to the 2014 percentage, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70 percent of its AP students earn a 3 or higher.

about a few she found troubling in the county. Mann said with a disparity like the one between Elmore and Tallapoosa counties her immediate response was to compare their unemployment rates. There was a largely economic underpinning that determined a majority of the factors that contributed to a child’s health and their access to health care. Mann said the child poverty rate of Tallapoosa was nearly double Elmore County and well over the state average. She said Tallapoosa County’s child poverty rate was 37.1 percent which is nearly 10 percent higher than the state average, while Elmore County was 18.9 percent. Another area she said the children in the county underperformed in was the fourth-grade reading proficiency tests. Mann said it tied into the child variable impacted “every area of a child’s life.” According to her information little under 28 percent of fourth-grade age children in the county are reading at proficient levels for their age group, meaning that roughly 72 percent are behind. “If they’re behind now they may continue to be behind,” said Mann. The state average Mann said was about 38 percent, again the county fell roughly 10 percent behind. The county’s teenagers also scored poorly in another one of the nine indicators, “teens not in school and not working.” From what she called the base year the rate of teens not in school and not working according to the Data Book has nearly doubled from 12.3 percent in 2000 to 21.5 percent from the years 2010-2014, while overall she said the state had seen some improvement. “Children under 18 in a single parent home,” was another area that Mann said the county fell behind the state average. It increased nearly 10 percent in 2000 when it was at 32 percent to about 41 percent in its 2010. According to the Data Book it stands roughly seven points higher than the state average. The offices of local pediatrician Dr. Billy Sellers have been in the area since 1981. In that time Sellers has seen some of
the county’s children through a number of major changes that have affected the area economically. He said the community had been good to his practice but said, “I do think that in many ways we over the last few years – especially since we lost the dominant employer – there have been a lot of things that have changed, not all for the better.” Sellers said he had not seen the Data Book’s findings, but despite this he mentioned a number of the same factors it listed as problematic both for state and the county in child healthcare. “One of the things that’s happened to us is that our demographics have changed over the past few years,” said Sellers. It was one of the main points that Mann said was occurring state and nationwide. Mann said her organization has found disparate states of healthcare received by infants and children of different races. “The other shift we’re seeing is a shift in the makeup of the child population,” Mann said. “Children of color will become the majority of the child pop in the next three to five years.” She said that trend stands for both the state and nation, and by 2030 they will makeup the majority of the workforce. Mann said African American babies are dying at a rate three times that of white babies and two times the rate of babies of any of color. “Those are some startling outcomes,” Mann said. This is happening in conjunction with what she said was a 24,000 decrease in the state’s child population, which Mann said meant a smaller group of workers taking care of a larger aging society. The top three ranking counties were, Shelby, Madison and Limestone counties, while the worst ranked was Wilcox County. Neighboring counties Clay, Coosa and Macon were listed at 20, 53 and 54 out the 67 counties in the state. The child health advocacy group VOICES for Alabama’s Children has published the Alabama Kids Count Data Book annually for over 20 years as a way to bring awareness to the state of “Alabama’s children,” county by county.

The satisfaction of volunteering is immense By RAPHORD FARRINGTON Guest Columnist
A
re you having company for the Christmas Holidays? Tell them to take a hike! That’s right, take your Christmas guests to Smith Mountain and hike up to the restored tower. It is a place you can see the most beautiful sunrise and sunsets in the world, anytime of the day you will see views of Lake Martin you have never experienced, and your guest will be talking about it for years, what a great Christmas memory. By the way as you enjoy please don’t leave any litter behind. All this beauty is taken care of by volunteers.
Which brings me to my next thoughts, a volunteer is defined as a person who offers to do something of his own freewill, to offer to do or give of one’s own freewill. So many of the good things in this country are done or accomplished by volunteers – those who see a need and act. Did you see the Dadeville Christmas Parade? I wonder how many volunteers were involved? Just about everyone who participated was a volunteer. My favorite participant was the van from a local extended care home that had three or four beautiful senior ladies waving and smiling. I didn’t realize the joy and satisfaction of volunteering until about 10 years ago. The greatest
benefit is to the volunteer. You don’t need a spotlight, an announcement or news release. The greatest joy comes from your heart as you have given of your own freewill. Of course the smiles and response from those you help is just a bonus. Have you ever volunteered at Loaves and Fishes? They need help every week. How about our senior care centers, hospital, schools, church, Girls Ranch, or your neighbor? And I’m sure there are dozens of other places. Try it you’ll like it and you meet the nicest people. I hope each and everyone of you have a “Merry Christmas.” Next time headlights, yard signs, and your garbage can!

helped with food drives at Thanksgiving and toy drives for Christmas. And that is not all. “We are partnering with the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and its Innovation Center along with several other Horseshoe Bend regional community groups. It is very important for Sabal Trail to put its best foot forward and establish itself as a good neighbor and community member.” State Representative Mark Tuggle is impressed with the new community partner. “It is amazing to see what they have done,” Tuggle said. “Just look at their commitment to the Lake Martin Innovation Center. That will go a long way.” In addition to being a part of the community, Sabal Trail and its contractors adding to the local economy. According to Sabal Trail in Alabama since construction began Sept. 1, approximately $4.5 million has been spent in the communities for materials and services like fuel, welding supplies, equipment leases and repairs, security, fencing, sanitation, gravel and sand, office supplies, housing and retail and eating establishments. Tuggle says look no further than Ruby Tuesday in Alexander City to see the effect of the project. “You can go by there almost any weeknight and its wrapped up,” Tuggle said. “Most of the hotels are doing great also.” Tuggle along with the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce’s Ed Collari worked with Alabama State Parks’ Greg Lein to make sure Wind Creek State Park could take advantage of the influx of construction workers. “These workers often travel and live out of RVs,” Tuggle said. “We wanted to make sure that Wind

Creek State Park would be able to take advantage of it. Greg was able to work some longer-term slots at Wind Creek at a reduced rate to encourage the workers to stay there. It will not affect the summer season as they will have moved on by then.” Wind Creek State Park has more than 60 sites occupied by the contractors. The pipeline starts in Alexander City and will travel about 515 miles to the Orlando, Florida area. more piles could be smoldering as evidence by smoke coming from the piles of mulch on the opposite side of the tracks form the fire. Smith wants the contractor to take the lead in making sure that the fire is completely extinguished while council members want to know who is covering the costs associated with fighting the fire. “I appreciate the fire and police departments for what they did out there,” Council member Roy Mathis said. “There were also four gentlemen from the forestry commission that spent there Thanksgiving out there. They did a good job.” “Is that company going to be responsible for water use?” Council Member Dick Harrelson asked. “There has been some discussion about billing them for it but we are still kind of talking about it,” Smith said. “But in addition to the water there were a lot of man hours out there. “We are asking him to get it completely out and what are the measures he will use in the future to prevent it from happening again. It is my understanding that they are winding up this section and starting to move on – but he is not going to leave a mess for the citizens of Dadeville.”

An interesting year of local politics approaches The 12 sites of Social Security
H
istorically speaking, Alabamians have been more interested in the governor’s race than presidential politics. For years, from 1876 to 1964, we were a totally Democratic state, more so out of tradition than philosophically. The hatred for the radical Republican Reconstruction shackles invoked on the South made an indelible mark on white southern voters. It was so instilled, that there are a good many stories told throughout the South where a dying grandfather would gather his children and grandchildren around his deathbed and gaspingly admonish them, “Two things I’m gonna tell y’all before I die – don’t ever sell the family farm and don’t ever vote for a damn Republican.” That all changed in November of 1964. Barry Goldwater and the Republicans became the party of segregation and the white southern voter fled the Democratic Party en mass. As the fall election of 1964 approached, the talk in the old country stores around Alabama was that a good many good old boys were going to vote straight Republican even if their daddies did turn over in their graves. Well folks, there were a good many papas turning over in their graves all over the South. The entire South changed parties on that day 52 years ago. Since we were a solid Democratic state for 90 years, we really had no say in the presidential selection process. We are in the same position today, being a solid Republican state. Therefore, it makes sense that we would have more interest in gubernatorial politics than presidential rhetoric because we have much more of a say in that contest. In addition, all of our other offices are up for election in the race for governor year, including all 67 sheriffs, all
Inside the Statehouse By Steve Flowers 140 members of the legislature, and all other constitutional offices such as attorney general, agriculture commissioner, secretary of state and treasurer. Indeed, for most of our past there were more votes cast in the Democratic Primary for Governor of Alabama than in a presidential contest. Today, our voting proclivity runs more along the national percentage. We also have the vsame tendency to vote more against someone than for someone. George Wallace used to always say give me a good boogeyman to run against. Well, lest you forget Hillary Clinton was the best boogeyman to vilify before Barack Obama. He was the hated villain for an eight year interlude. Now Bill and Hillary have taken back their rightful place as the face of the despised national Democratic Party among white southerners. Therefore, as this year began, I thought it would be a yawner, a sleeper year for good old Alabama politics. However, we have had some good theater. Not to be outdone by the colorful campaign of Donald Trump, who was a continuous circus or vaudeville act, our local Alabama characters have put on quite a show. It began with the ethics trial of former House Speaker Mike Hubbard, which was a lengthy, detailed, fully vetted and well run process. Hubbard was found guilty by a Lee County jury, which he represented in the legislature. He will ultimately go to jail, a state prison, which
is woefully overcrowded and dangerous. While the Hubbard story was anticipated and expected, the saga of good ole Dr. Robert Bentley has remained in the news continuously throughout the entire year. His former buddy, Spencer Collier, has filed a lawsuit against the Governor and his girlfriend. Now comes a second suit and revelations by his former Security Chief Ray Lewis which is juicier and adds to and confirms Collier’s story. This will probably keep the salacious story alive for another year or more. Bentley has been relegated to an irrelevant punch line or joke. He would not have been so adversely ridiculed if he had not been perceived as a family values man, churchman, retired doctor and looked like an old grandfather. There is an old saying in politics that if you ride a white horse you better not get mud on it because it shows up. Another truism is sex sells. Ain’t Alabama politics fun? Wow – what a year! Now we will get ready for the 2018 gubernatorial year, and to top it off, we have also got an open Senate seat up for grabs. We will have a governor’s race and an open U.S. Senate race in the same year. Those races have begun. Since winning the Republican primary is tantamount to election in Alabama, we elect a new governor and new U.S. Senator in June of 2018, which is less than 18 months from now. See you next week. Steve Flowers is Alabama’s leading political columnist. His weekly column appears in over 60 Alabama newspapers. He served 16 years in the state legislature.
