Denim and Diamonds Ball a big success By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

Nearly 150 guests filled the Rodeo Club in Dadeville Friday night for the sixth annual Denim and Diamonds Charity Ball. Sponsored by the Dadeville Chamber of Commerce as a fundraiser for the Lake Martin Area United Way, the night featured steak and baked potatoes from Poplar Dawgs, a silent auction with 52 wonderful items and the music of Lisa and the E-Lusion. “We do this every year for the Lake

Martin Area United Way,” Chamber President Michael Carter said. “It gives people the chance to get dressed up and have a little fun locally.” Among the multitude of items available at the silent auction included six tickets to the Troy game against Texas State, golf retreats from both StillWaters and Russell Lands, a case of wine from Hodges Vineyards, a miniature Red Bull refrigerator, a charcoal grill and a United States flag that flew over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Middlebrooks discusses vote on property tax

Student accused in bomb threat now suspended

Tallapoosa County Revenue Commissioner Eva Middlebrooks said many residents don’t have a clear understanding of recent changes in property tax assessments as well as the upcoming vote on a proposed property tax increase for those with property in the Tallapoosa County School District. Thursday Middlebrooks talked to the Dadeville Kiwanis Club and tried to clear up some of the issues and misconceptions. “One of the big changes that was made in 2017 was the new manual the state put out,” she said. “Tallapoosa County was one of the first places the manual went into effect because the state thought this would be a good place to test it.” Middlebrooks explained how there were some property tax increases seen across the board, as well as the recent installation of mandatory fire fees in Union and East Tallassee to help support their local See TAX • Page A8

An 11-year-old Dadeville Elementary School student is not on campus after calling in a bomb threat to Dadeville High School last week. “He is presently suspended from school pending alterative placement Monday,” Tallapoosa County School Superintendent Joe Windle said at Monday’s board meeting while updating the board of the incident. “He called it in from the bus ride to school.” Windle explained the decision of what to do with the student’s education until a January court date will be decided Monday. “He could be placed in the alterative school (on the Dadeville campus),” Windle said. “We may provide homeschool services, either a teacher goes to his home some or our online school.” Law enforcement officials responded quickly to the potential threat at Dadeville High School Wednesday

Keebler Park rain garden construction begins By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

Eight students from Dadeville High School, representing the FFA, Key Club and Beta Club arrived at Keebler Park after school Thursday afternoon, joining local resident Dianna Porter and FFA Advisor Rollie Wright to help get the new rain garden ready for planting. Since bringing her initial thoughts before the Dadeville City Council during the July 25 council meeting, Porter has been coming up with plan after plan for how to transform the park into a beautiful space that could become a major showpiece for the city of Dadeville. bear fruit, as instructors from the Edward Bell Career Tech Center in Camp Hill brought a drone up to the park in order to take pictures of the park and get a better feel of its layout. However, Thursday marked the beginning of landscaping work being done, as Dadeville city employees did some digging at the rain garden site, preparing some dirt and a mound of mulch for planting. “It makes me feel very pleased,” Porter said as the students began spreading mulch and shaping the pile of dirt. “A lot of planning went into this. It makes me feel good that we have come this far and have this kind of involvement from the community and the See KEEBLER • Page A8

Dear Editor, This Thanksgiving Day, as we gather with family and friends to count our blessings, let’s give thanks for the bounty we enjoy not just on this holiday, but every day. The safe, plentiful food that is available to us, and the products used to produce the clothing, housing, medicines, fuel and other products we use on a daily basis, didn’t just appear in a store. They got there thanks to a tremendous partnership of farmers and ranchers, processors, brokers, truckers, shippers, advertisers, wholesalers and retailers.

Rural and urban residents are “Partners in Progress” who produce the products, consume the products, and make them readily available through an efficient production and marketing chain. Farmers and ranchers are just the beginning of that chain. Farm workers, researchers, processors, shippers, truck drivers, inspectors, wholesalers, agribusinesses, marketers, advertisers, retailers and consumers all play important roles in the incredible productivity that has made our nation’s food and fiber system the envy of the world. This week, as we celebrate

“This fundraiser has a huge impact for the United Way,” Lake Martin Area United Way Executive Director Sharon Fuller said. “We’re here to have fun and give back to the community.” The Dadeville Chamber of Commerce uses this event not only to raise money for a charitable organization, but also to show the people of Dadeville how hard the chamber tries to work in the community, according to Carter. “We like being able to offer events like this,” he said. “Our hope is to make it bigger every year.” Not only does the chamber enjoy sponsoring this event, but members of the community are just as excited when the date rolls around each year. “A lot of people come back every time,” Fuller said. “People get excited about coming. It helps bring the county together. We even have people coming from as far away as Birmingham and Pensacola.” Friday night, Fuller said 175 tickets had been sold, demonstrating how enthused people were to be able to help the United Way and have fun at the same time. After getting their fill of steak and baked potatoes, guests got to dance to the music of Lisa and the E-Lusion. Starting the music with “Mustang Sally,” the band played a number of classic hits as couples and groups began to hit the dance floor and enjoy moving to the beat. Financially, the charity ball was a success in bringing in support to the United Way as it continues to raise money for its 28 agencies. At last count, the silent auction brought in just under $4,000, Tina Parker with the United Way said. This amount may not seem like a lot, but it is invaluable in helping the groups that partner with United Way provide the multitude of services they provide to those in need. Carter wanted to thank Poplar Dawgs for providing Friday night’s meal, while Fuller expressed gratitude for everyone coming out to support the “Team United” campaign. “It’s great getting to work with the Chamber on this,” Fuller said. “Everything went well tonight.”

OurView

We have much to thankful for

I

t was almost 400 years ago when New World settlers sailed the Mayflower from Europe to our shores seeking religious freedom. These pilgrims were risking their lives, coming to a new land full of uncertainty and peril … but free of religious persecution. By the fall of 1621, almost half of the 102 original pilgrims had succumbed to the hardships of life in America. It was after the harvest when the remaining pilgrims and 91 Native Americans came together to rest and share the three-day feast we celebrate today as Thanksgiving. Four hundred years ago, American pilgrims were truly thankful for their lives and their new allies. Without the help of the Native Americans who shared their food, the pilgrims would have likely starved that winter. Much has changed in the last 400 years. Today in America obesity is more likely to kill than starvation. The relationship between Native Americans and those who settled America has changed and changed again, and until recently it hasn’t gone well for the home team. Today it is not rest that we need, but exercise. Today in the United States, our religious freedoms are guaranteed by our constitution, yet many of us are unchurched. Today we live in under appreciated abundance. Our perils and our blessings have changed drastically, but the basic human need for giving thanks has not. Since that first Thanksgiving meal almost four centuries ago, the true meaning of this holiday has been about the celebration of life around a common table, about sharing and valuing one another. We have so many blessings and so much to be thankful for as Americans, but few are as important as our relationships with each other. We here at TPI are thankful to be serving such a wonderful community and for all of you who share your time by reading our products, turning to us for news. We hope our readers have a meaningful, happy Thanksgiving this year.

Our baby is home at long last O

ver the past few weeks, my articles haven’t been appearing regularly in the paper. Quite a few people have let me know that they’ve missed them. Most have even said it’s the first thing they turn to when they get their paper. If you are one of those people, thank you. I appreciate your support. It all started with a very sad situation. As I was sitting at my desk writing my article, I got a call informing me that Lucy’s horse had broken its leg and would need to be put down. I had to quit what I was doing and go wake her up to inform her of the tragic news. Lucy was seven months pregnant at the time, so that was stress she did not need. Somehow, she made it through. The next week was totally different and totally on me. I played in a golf tournament but figured I could get the article written before or after. Throw in my unexpected chores associated with the pregnancy along with my horrid golf game, and I was late—too late to get it written. The next morning, my world changed forever. I’ve written about it in detail previously, but in a nutshell, it goes like this: Lucy had the baby seven and a half weeks early in the back of an ambulance en route to Birmingham on Friday the thirteenth. Nothing in her life, my life, or our life ever goes off quite as planned, and that’s okay. Abigail, our little princess, did really well right from the start. She was just little and needed her lungs and heart to get a little stronger before we could bring her home. She

Training

A Tallapoosa County Sheriff Deputy, above, played the role of an active shooter while his co-workers sought to apprehend him in an active shooter training exercise at the Maxwell Gunter Recreation Area. The exercise had staff at the park calling in the incident after shots were fired at the building, bottom. The deputies teamed up with an officer from the Dadeville Police Department to clear the property and apprehend the shooter.

better assist in a response. “Anytime that we exercise with law enforcement we learn things,” said Maxwell Gunter Installation Program Officer Craig Rainey. “We need to do this to provide better support for them to support us.” It was the first such exercise with law enforcement from the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department and the Dadeville Police Department in the first joint exercise with officials from Maxwell Gunter to train for an active shooter. “We have a new requirement to exercise at our off site locations,” Rainey said. “They would be the folks we would call.” Given the distance to the main post, the sheriff’s department would be the first response to a situation at the recreation area. Tuesday morning four deputies and one officer from the Dadeville Police Department could be seen clearing buildings while following an active shooter, finally cornering him the bathhouse on the property. Officers were able to negotiate the shooter into surrendering. Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Ray Arrington explained the exercise where a disgruntled person showed up on the property. “When the shooter started making pop shots someone from in the building made the call,” Arrington said. “Dispatch treated it as an active shooter.” All this was done under the eyes of training officers who were taking notes like Arrington who saw some things to improve on. “Overall they did OK,” Arrington said. “There are some things we need to point out to them.” Some of those tips are move to the shooter quicker to tips on the initial arrival on scene to the tactical movements. Like the real thing, responding law enforcement knew very little when Tuesday morning. “When the deputy gets on scene he gives back information,” Arrington said. “When he first gets on the scene, he has to evaluate the scene. He is listening for shots. We are trained to go to the threat to stop that threat. An officer wants to get on scene and take the threat out. The way I see it, every shot that is fired is someone who died.” Arrington said there are differences between training exercises and the real thing, but training is still the way to go. “In a real situation, your adrenaline gets going and you get tunnel vision,” Arrington said. “You revert back to training. You got to train to be effective at it (response). So you train, train, train.” Rainey was pleased with what he saw Tuesday morning in the joint exercise. “We validated some things,” he said. “We learned some things. Yeah, we had fun.” For Arrington, the exercise serves as a reminder of the danger first responders face everyday. “It is always in the back of your mind,” Arrington said. “You don’t know what your day holds. You leave your home and take every call serious as it comes.”

Thanksgiving is a National holiday which is set aside to give thanks for the many blessings you have received in the past year and the ones you have to look forward to in the year to come. Every year in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November, families gather for a day of giving thanks, feasting, and family time. The history of Thanksgiving Day dates back to 1621. A group known as the Pilgrims sailed IURP (XURSH WR WKH 1HZ :RUOG RQ WKH 0D\Ă€RZHU LQ VHDUFK RI JUHDWHU UHOLJLRXV IUHHGRPV 7KH\ ODQGHG DW a place they named Plymouth Rock (Modern day Plymouth, Massachusetts). County schools welcome new board member By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer At its annual meeting, the Tallapoosa County Board of Education saw newly appointed member Betty Carol Graham get sworn in, got a demonstration of the new bus tracking system and heard the system’s finances were in good order thanks to the sales tax. “It’s a special meeting,” Superintendent Joe Windle said. “We get to induct a new board member.” The board recently agreed to purchase a subscription service to N-Side to track the system’s buses. “We think it is a step forward,” Windle said. “If we have an incident on a bus, we know where that bus is. This is safety to the next step.” Alan Bentley with N-Side was on hand to demonstrate the system. He explained the system can track in real time the school buses locations, speeds and fuel consumption. The

system makes easier determining which routes students should on because of the way their system brings in Google Maps. Windle is proud the system also protects drivers. “Our drivers get hit with false accusations like speeding,” Windle said. “It gives us real time information to answer questions.” Bentley said the information is also recorded and the system has the ability to send alerts when buses travel outside a set range or detect a rapid acceleration or deceleration. The board approved the monthly financial report and the fiscal year 2017 financial statement and learned things are looking up for the system. “We had a great sales tax year,” Windle said. “Best year ever. Reserve, we have met the requirement for the first time in 10 to 12 years. We now have one and a half months in reserve.” Tallapoosa County Schools Chief Financial Officer Tommy Thweatt said part of the

system’s success was due to state funding in school transportation but the system would likely see that scaled back to some degree forcing the system to use local money to fully fund the program. Windle was proud of the projects they had completed, such as the roof at Dadeville Elementary School, the visitor bleachers at the Dadeville football field, the lights at the Reeltown football field, the softball pressbox and concession stand at Reeltown High School, the roof on the band room at Horseshoe Bend High School and the air conditioning at the Horseshoe Bend School Cafeteria kitchen. “We incurred no debt on those projects,” Windle said. The projects were paid for from the newest 1-cent sales tax passed by the Tallapoosa County Commission. Windle was silent about the upcoming Dec. 12 3-mil ad valorem tax vote though the school board attorney briefly stated the vote

2 Montgomery men arrested after wild, high-speed chase

Threat

By MITCH SNEED Editor

A quick response by Jacksons Gap Police to a residential alarm call interrupted a burglary in progress and led to a multi-jurisdictional, high-speed chase with shots fired last Friday and early Saturday morning. According to Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett, two Montgomery men are in the Tallapoosa County Jail on attempted murder charges after what turned out to be a wild sequence of events. The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department and the Jacksons Gap Police Department are still actively McCall investigating at least three residential burglaries in the Shady Bay area of Jacksons Gap. “On Friday, Nov. 17 at approximately 11 p.m. the Jackson’s Gap Police Department responded to an alarm call at one of the residences,” Abbett said. Sword “Shortly after arriving Jacksons Gap Police unit gave pursuit to the suspect vehicle. During the pursuit the suspects fired multiple gunshots at the unit which disabled the unit.” Jacksons Gap Police Department Chief B.C. Cooper’s vehicle was hit by gunfire, one of the rounds taking out the radiator on the vehicle. Luckily, Cooper was not seriously injured in the incident. The suspects fled in what turned out to be a stolen vehicle and the chase reached speeds in excess of 100 mph. For a time, the suspects traveled the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of Highway 280, before crossing over just before reaching the River Bridge. “From County Road 40 there near the golf course, there were driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic,” Abbett said. “It’s a miracle that someone wasn’t killed.” As the chase advanced, multiple agencies got involved. Those agencies included the Alexander City Police Department, Eclectic Police Department, Wetumpka Police Department, Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department and the Elmore County Sheriff’s Department. The pursuit finally ended when the vehicle wrecked after spike strips were used on Alabama Highway 170 in Elmore County near Eclectic. After the crash, Aubrey Demonte McCall, 20, of 2730 Endicott Drive, Montgomery, and Andrew Sword, 17, also of 2730 Endicott Drive, Montgomery were arrested. Both men have been charged with attempted murder and placed in the Tallapoosa County Jail. Bond was set at $100,000 for both McCall and Sword. Court records show that McCall was arrested in February for receiving stolen property. Sword’s record shows that he was out on bond for armed robbery and burglary and despite being just 17, had eight charges in his adult criminal history. Property from the residential burglaries were recovered from the vehicle that was reported stolen from Montgomery. Abbett said that the incident is disturbing in light of a burglary spree two years ago involving Montgomery suspects. “This time of year many of the lake property owners don’t come to the lake as often and the secluded nature of many of those homes mean that they aren’t visible to a lot of people,” Abbett said. “We hope this isn’t the start of another issue like we had before with some people thinking they can come here and find an easy target. “That’s why we ask people to do what they can to deter these kinds of incidents. Obviously security cameras and alarms help, as they did in this case. But things like increased lighting, having neighbors look out for each other and checking on the property regularly – those all help as well.”

might need to be talked about if the governor decides to postpone the election due to the controversy in the U.S. Senate race. No one from the public signed up to speak to the board in its annual meeting but the board did reelect Martin Johnson as chair and Michael Carter as vice chair. Treadwell also informed the board the lawsuit filed in federal court by former Councill Middle School Principal Melanie McKinney would be dismissed. The board also: • approved the resignation of Dadeville Elementary School teacher Teresa Brunetti. • approved the employment of Travis Spraggins at Horseshoe Bend School and Jennifer Sprayberry at Dadeville Elementary School. • appoved a purchased services agreement with Darlene Jones to work as a para-pro in special education at Reeltown Elementary. • approved revisions to the Child Nutrition Program’s policies and wellness program.

“ “Vote No” to the property tax signs have started to show up in Tallapoosa County eencouraging residents to vote against a 3-mil ad valorem tax for education. Eva Middlebrooks, below, was on hand at Thursday’s Dadeville Kiwanis Club meeting to M ttalk taxes with the group.

vvolunteer fire departments. “I also want to take some time to talk about the property tax vote coming uup,” she said. “I know you’ve seen the signs popping up along the roadways ssaying ‘Vote No.’ I feel there’s been a lot of confusion on what this increase would mean.” w Middlebrooks explained how the three mill property tax increase would work should it be approved during the special election in December. w “For every $100,000 in appraised property, this would mean an annual iincrease in property taxes of $30,” she said. Middlebrooks also said she believed that, should the three mill property ttax increase be approved by voters, the one-cent sales tax would come off tthe board, but if the increase is shot down, the sales tax would remain for the ttime being, until the Tallapoosa County Commission chose to either approve iits continuation or stop its collection. It is also important to note that the pproperty tax proposal that will be on the ballot is only for property owners in tthe Tallapoosa County school district and does not include Alexander City. Middlebrooks concluded her talk Thursday afternoon by discussing the ttimetable for property re-evaluation and some of the homestead property tax eexemptions available. “Everybody got re-evaluated this past summer,” she said. “Normally, pproperty gets evaluated every four years. We have the county split up into ssections and take one section each year for re-evaluating.” With regards to homestead property tax exemptions, Middlebrooks said tthere are four main types of exemptions. These include a standard exemption ffor people under the age of 65, the Act 91-A exemption for blind people, tthe Act 91-B exemption for residents over the age of 65, and the Act 48 eexemption for senior citizens or people who have retired due to disability. “To apply for exemptions for next year, you have until Dec. 1,” she said. ““If you are over 65, you will get something.”

morning after an anonymous caller phoned the school, claiming there was a bomb in the building that was about to blow up. The school was placed on lockdown while the building was swept for any explosives before allowing students to enter and proceed with their regular school day. While the investigation is still ongoing, the Tallapoosa County School system said the incident was handled following the district’s protocol. “First and foremost is the safety of our students,” Director of Student Services Casey Davis said. “Our procedures were followed.” The first step is that 911 is called and the proper authorities are brought in to help handle the situation. While authorities are en route to the location in question, school representatives assess the situation and determine what is best for the safety of the students, according to Davis. “The police were on the scene almost immediately,” Davis said. “Once the first responders were there, it became their scene and shifts to their protocols. As far as I know, their protocols were followed.” Davis also said that the county school system did post on social media about the incident Wednesday afternoon. Dadeville Police Chief David Barbour said the student was arrested shortly after the threat was called in and that the issue was handled before the school day began. The student was arrested Wednesday for making a terrorist threat before being released to his parents, Barbour said, adding that the case would be handled in juvenile court. j In addition to potential charges stemming from making this threat, the Tallapoosa County School system was also taking action against the student. “I can’t speak specifically on the student’s punishment, but the student is being dealt with according to the Tallapoosa County Student Code of Conduct,” Davis said.

students.” Once the dirt had been shaped into a retaining wall and the mulch had been spread enough to allow for planting, the first plants were placed along the top of the dirt wall. Porter had brought plants with her that would be planted in the mulch, but as the mulch was still warm from trying to compost, she said they would wait to plant them until after the weekend rains had cooled the mulch off. As he helped spread the mulch and shape the dirt, Wright said he was happy to be able to take part in helping organize student involvement for this project. “She (Porter) approached me about getting involved with this,” Wright said. “As soon as I heard about this project, I knew it was a good idea. “The FFA, we do little things around the high school, like maintaining the plants at the football field entrance, but this is our first big project. It’s a great opportunity to get to work on things like this.” With the level of effort and enthusiasm the students showed as they raked the mulch out into a larger area for planting and shaped the dirt to form the water retaining wall, it was clearly evident that they were excited and happy to be taking part in this project. Porter went on to say that more plants would be added to the rain garden over the next couple of months, especially once spring rolls around. Even though this is just the first step in her overall plan for the beautification of Keebler Park, Porter was thrilled to see these first steps taking place with the help of the students who joined her Thursday afternoon to begin planting. “To see your ideas start to come alive, especially with the community’s help, it’s really big,” Porter said.

Iron Bowl has great history of ‘what ifs’ W

hat if T.J. Yeldon stepped out of bounds at the Auburn 39-yard line with no time remaining rather than a split second? The Kick Six never would have happened. Replays of Chris Davis skirting the sidelines and racing 109 yards for the winning touchdown in 2013 would not resurface over and over again. Auburn Network radio broadcasters Rod Bramblett and Stan White would have never called the most remarkable moment in Iron Bowl history. What if? A split second here. An inch there. A controversial call one year. A spectacular feat of clutch athleticism the next year. The Iron Bowl has brought us some of the greatest moments in college football history. Some were simply great plays. Some might have come with a sprinkle of magic dust. Some came at critical moments that changed the outcome in games played between evenly-matched teams. What if Alabama quarterback Ken Stabler slipped in the mud that soggy day at Legion Field in 1967? Instead of slithering for a long, game-winning touchdown run, he could have slipped. People fall when it’s wet. Evidently, snakes do not. What if Auburn receiver Thomas Gossom wasn’t inaccurately called for stepping out of bounds before catching what would have been the go-ahead touchdown against Alabama in 1974? Auburn would have gone ahead 20-17 in the fourth quarter and Alabama’s ninegame win streak over the Tigers from 1973-81 would have been sliced in half. What if Bo Over the Top in 1982 came a centimeter short? The Tiger legend barely crossed the goal line. Otherwise, Alabama’s nine-year run would have stretched to 10. See MCADORY • Page B2

Reeltown falters in Round 2 vs. Sulligent, 35-25 By LIZI ARBOGAST Sports Editor

After getting itself into a 14-point hole early in Friday night’s Class 2A second round game, Reeltown’s football team did all it could to fight and claw its way out of it. It even took a lead on Sulligent midway through the third quarter, but the Rebels couldn’t quite hold down

the Blue Devils in a 35-25 loss. “The first half, we just didn’t do what we were coached to do,” Reeltown coach Matt Johnson said. “The second half, the guys came out and did a great job defensively; that was just a product of them being a really good team. Our guys battled back and played tough. We only have six seniors, but those are six seniors that are really tough to lose.” Reeltown finishes the season with

a 7-5 record, while Sulligent (111) advances to face defending state champion Fyffe in the quarterfinals. On the first two possessions of Friday’s game, it looked like it was going to be a long night for Reeltown. The Rebels had negative-9 yards on their first drive, while Sulligent methodically moved the ball downfield and Tyreke Metcalfe capped it off with an 8-yard score. On the ensuing kickoff, things went

from bad to worse for Reeltown, as it fumbled the kickoff and Sulligent recovered on the Rebel 29. Five plays later, the Blue Devils found the end zone again and led 14-0 just eight minutes into the game. “We didn’t have the right focus at the time,” Reeltown running back Kolby Coan said. “We came out, and they were just ready to play and we weren’t.” See REBELS • Page B2

the federal grant totaling $200,000. The remainder of cost, or the local share, will be the responsibility of the county commission, according to Beck. “I would expect that all or most of our share would be in-kind work,” Beck said. “The commission workforce will do preparation on the track that equal to the local share amount. Basically, they’ll be doing some grading and moving dirt, bringing dirt in to prepare the area; that’s what the in-kind work would be.” Currently, the Dadeville track is made of crusher run, which is a mix finer than gravel. Having a new track will also allow the Tiger team to have long jump and triple jump pit unlike the current makeshift sand pits, according to Hand. If the new track has eight lanes, it will also allow Dadeville to host home meets. For the Tigers, Thweatt is hoping this will jumpstart an already successful track and field program. “I think it’ll make them even better than what they are now,” Thweatt said. “They’ve been good for several years, eight to 10 years even, but never had the facility to work with. For instance, they won first place in the hurdles (at state last year) and they don’t even have a hurdle down there.” In addition, the other two county schools, Reeltown and Horseshoe Bend, will be permitted to use the facilities, and it will continue to be open to the public.

Work is set to begin as soon as possible on the resurfacing of Dadeville High School’s track, which will also serve as a multi-use track for the community.

“Anytime you’re in a relatively rural community, resources can be difficult to get,” Beck said. “The Dadeville track program has been very, very successful with very limited resources, and this gives that group of kids and people dedicated to give it more facilities the ability to continue to compete. It’ll also act as a community walking trail, which was one of the conditions of the grant.

“Commissioner Thweatt was very adamant in pursuing this for the folks in Dadeville. She deserves the lion’s share of the credit for getting this done.” According to Thweatt, the in-kind work will begin as soon as the grant money is officially received, and she’s hoping to have most of the work done prior to the winter weather. If not, the project will be completed this spring.

Rebels From there, Reeltown got back to its bread and butter. The Rebels went into their Wishbone formation and looked like a well-oiled machine, driving the ball 65 yards in nine plays and five minutes and finishing it off with an 18-yard touchdown run from Tre Tre Hughley. Once again, special teams made a difference. Reeltown elected for an onside kick, which Cameron Faison recovered, and a few plays later, the Rebels were in the end zone again. “They had their best athlete back there deep, and when we kicked it back there deep, he had a real good return,” Johnson said. “We

were going to go to pooch kicking it, and we found a weakness there that we really didn’t expect. We kept going back to it, and it worked out good for us.” A missed point-after attempt put Reeltown on its heels, though, as it still trailed 14-13 after the RaRa Wright score. But a battle ensued from there. Sulligent scored another touchdown late in the second quarter, and Reeltown immediately responded with a 2-yard touchdown run from Wright. Because they were down by a point, though, the Rebels went for two and the pass failed. Reeltown finally took

a lead in the third quarter. Hughley busted out a 78-yard run, the longest of the night for either team, to take the Rebels into the red zone and Wright finished it off with his third touchdown of the night. But that was all Reeltown could muster, as Sulligent scored twice more to set the final score. Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for Reeltown. Hughley totaled 141 yards on nine carries and had two tackles for a loss, while Coan added 30 rushing yards. Wright had 27 yards and three touchdowns on just six attempts. And although Reeltown

wishes it could be moving on, it has a lot to look forward to with a ton of skill players and key defenders returning next season. “That does a lot for us,” Coan said. “With a couple of them being sophomores and having two more years ahead of them, that helps out a lot.” Johnson said, “The bar has continued to be raised. We got beat the first round last year, second round this year, so we’re going to continue to raise the bar. We’ve got a young group of skill guys that we have big things for, but that bitter taste just stays in your mouth until you get back out here and do it again.”

What if Bo didn’t go the wrong way in 1984? With the game on the line at the Tide 1, Jackson was supposed to throw a block on the right side — clearing a running lane for Brent Fullwood on fourth down. Instead, Bo blocked left, Fullwood was unprotected. Alabama won, 17-15. Then again, what if Pat Dye elected to kick the easy field goal? Just saying. What if Van Tiffin doesn’t make the 52-yard field goal on the last play to beat Auburn 25-23 in 1985? Fifty-two yards? Who did he think he was? Daniel Carlson? What if Frank Sanders didn’t make that acrobatic catch near the goal line on fourth and long in 1993? Trailing 14-5 in the third quarter, Auburn would have turned the ball over on downs and its improbable 11-0 season would have gone up in smoke. What if Alabama coach Mike DuBose doesn’t call a screen pass to Ed Scissum in the final moments of the 1997 game? Alabama led 17-15 and Auburn had no time outs. Maybe a simple running play, or QB kneel, would kill the clock. Nah. Scissum caught the pass, was left exposed, was drilled by Montavius Houston and fumbled. Auburn won with a last-second field goal, 18-17. What if Mark Ingram doesn’t fumble the ball out of the Auburn end zone in 2010? Auburn’s Antonio Coleman punched the ball out, creating a touchback. Alabama could have led 31-0. We know what happened next. What crazy, memorable moment will occur Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium? If history has anything to say about it, we’re due another one. Iron Bowl pick: If Auburn can run on Alabama like it did against Georgia, you’ve got to like the Tigers’ chances. But that’s going to be much easier said than done. Alabama’s running attack presents more problems than Auburn has encountered all season. Not just Damien Harris or Bo Scarbrough, but Jalen Hurts can tuck and run better than most. Missildine sentenced to 10 years in prison, for now By MITCH SNEED Editor Judge Ray Martin sentenced a mother who was convicted of chemical endangerment of a child resulting in death to 10 years in prison Friday, but left the door open for some alterations. After hearing from a tearful 33-year-old Bethany Brown Missildine, her mother and defense attorney Jason Jackson and District Attorney Jeremy Duerr, Martin admitted the difficulty he faced when confronted with a law with very specific, harsh sentencing guidelines and a case that had extenuating circumstances. In Alabama, chemical endangerment of a child resulting in death is a Class A felony and carries a sentence from 10 up to 99 years

in prison. “The legislature passed a law that says if you expose a child to a dangerous chemical it’s a crime,” Martin said. “But if a death occurs as a result is it a much different crime. …The law is very specific, it’s a Class A felony. So because there was a death, the law takes a distinct hard turn with a 10 to 99 years or life sentence. They intended it to be a severe punishment. This case is different, but the law is what it is.” Jackson had asked Martin to consider giving a probated sentence, but Martin denied that request. Martin sentenced Missildine to 10 years in prison, but gave Jackson and Duerr 30 days to enter a motion where he could consider a split or alternate sentence. “If the attorneys could work

together on this over a period of up to 30 days, I will consider a motion for a split sentence or any other alternative that may be workable under the guidelines. I know this is a little unusual, but this case is different.” A split sentence would mean that Missidine would serve 10 years, but it could be time that is spent part in prison and part on probation. Bentley Cole Missildine of Alexander City died at Russell Medical on Dec. 27, 2014, shortly after officers were called to a home on Barrett Road. The Alexander City Police Department launched an investigation into the death. As a result of the toddler’s unexpected death, an autopsy was performed. Toxicology reports performed during that process were not complete until June 2015. Those

tests indicated the boy’s death was due to “methadone toxicity.” Bethany Missildine was arrested a short time later and then indicted for chemical endangerment of a child resulting in death. Testimony at trial showed evidence that Missildine was taking methadone to help battle an addiction problem and had left a dose on a chest of drawers in a bedroom and the child apparently got to it and ingested it with without anyone knowing. Missildine talked through tears as she addressed the judge before the sentence was handed down. “I’m sorry and I take full responsibility for my irresponsible actions that day,” Missildine said. “There is not a day that goes by when I don’t think to myself ‘why’ and ‘how could I have left that there

where he could get it.’ I live with that every day.” Jackson pointed out how Bethany had turned her life around following the tragedy and called the death “a tragic, tragic accident.” Duerr called the case one of the toughest he has ever had to deal with as a prosecutor. “It’s a tragedy,” Duerr said. “Like Kevin Hall said after the trial, there are no winners in this case. The state may have gotten a guilty verdict, but both sides lose because the child is not here. It’s just sad all the way around. …I was sworn into to uphold the law. I have a duty to Bentley and everyone in Tallapoosa County to seek justice for him. …I don’t know what is fair. I know the court is competent enough to impose a sentence that is fair and just.”

Local churches prepare for Community Thanksgiving Dinner By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

Thanksgiving is a time for families to come together and be thankful for what they have every day. For those in the community who may not have a family to gather with, there is a way they can still celebrate the holiday in a traditional manner. Several churches are working together to provide the community with a free Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lunchroom of Benjamin Russell High School. “River of Life oversees it, but five churches help with cooking and preparing food and several others have members who volunteer to serve,” River of Life Church Administrator Theresa Waldrop said. “It’s a big group effort.” Along with River of Life, Marshall Street Church of God, West End Church, Liberty Life Christian Center and Passion Church bring plenty of traditional Thanksgiving fare, while a number of others help set up, serve and clean up the dinner. Last year, Waldrop said around 125 people came to the high school lunchroom and celebrated Thanksgiving during the community dinner, while more than 400 plates were delivered around town. “We deliver to the fire station, the police station, and some of the area nursing homes,” Waldrop said. “We also send plates to Hillabee Towers and one of the other senior living centers.” She added that several people who work with Meals on Wheels had chosen to volunteer this year, and so people who

receive food through the organization would be among those getting a Thanksgiving dinner plate. People can also call the church if they know someone who may not be able to get to the high school and could use a plate. “Those who receive deliveries always respond positively and are thankful for the food,” Waldrop said. “The police and fire departments usually call afterwards and thank us again for thinking of them. “A lot of the people we see in the lunchroom express how thankful they are for us providing this food, giving them the chance to celebrate the holiday like everybody else.” Waldrop said that personally, she feels it is a great blessing to get to do this and how she wants to be a blessing to the community. “If I had my way and money was no problem, I would have a soup kitchen every week,” she added. Thursday’s meal will include turkey, ham, cranberry sauce, a variety of vegetables, dessert and a drink, according to Waldrop. She said people would be welcome to sit down and eat there in the lunchroom or could choose to take their food to go if they desire. For those wanting to volunteer to help out with the dinner, River of Life’s phone number is 256-392-4950. Waldrop said anyone was welcome to help out for a couple of hours or the entire day if they so wanted, beginning when the food starts to arrive at 8 a.m. “Feel free to come by and get a plate. It doesn’t cost anything and you don’t need a ticket to get in,” she said. “We’ll be there and we want to help as many people as we can.”

concern for boating safety and the people who boat on Lake Martin. I thank you for your generous donation.” Thompson explained why the radar and compass unit is so valuable. “Lake Martin is a large lake,” Thompson said. “We have radar and compass units on our vessels along the coastline but not inland. It (Lake Martin) is a large lake and continues to grow with people building homes and weekends are becoming more and more congested. Our job is to make sure everyone has fun and goes home safely to their loved one. This radar unit will allow us to navigate more safely and quickly at night and inclement weather conditions. I am extremely excited about this. It is a fantastic donation.”

HOBO board member Gene Cody was thankful of the efforts of law enforcement. “We thank you all so much for what you do,” Cody said. In addition to thank the HOBOs, law enforcement officials thanked local volunteer rescue squads like Alex City Search and Rescue Squad, the Lake Martin Search and Rescue Squad and the Tallaco K-9 Search and Rescue Squad. “They perform an invaluable service,” Thompson said. “When we get the call for an accident or natural disaster, we need our counterparts in these organizations. They are invaluable. They are true partners in our job on these waterways. We couldn’t do our job without them.”

Local Boys and Girls Club provides positive after-school environment By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

It has been argued that providing students from elementary to high school with a variety of after-school activities and groups to be a part of can help make these students more successful in the classroom and less likely to take part in things like gangs. For children in the Alexander City school system, one such outlet is the Boys and Girls Club of the Lake Martin Area. Headquartered on Cherokee Road, the group offers students a place to come after school, get help with homework and develop a wide range of valuable personal traits. “The mission of the Boys and Girls Club of the Lake Martin Area is to help youth of all backgrounds with emphasis on youth of all minorities build confidence, develop character and acquire the skills needed to grow into productive, civic minded and responsible adults,” Club Director Melissa Reynolds said. “Our programs and services address the social, educational, vocational and character development of boys and girls. The BGCLMA targets youth and families in communities from public housing and low-income neighborhoods.” Working with children ages 5 to 18, there are five core services the Boys and Girls Club provides to each student that comes through the program. These include character and leadership development, education and career development, the arts, health and life skills and sports, fitness and recreation. “Core Services are the basic areas of activity, which meet the diverse needs, interests, and inclinations of all the members,” Reynolds said. “Core Services provide program continuity; they are the activities and services which are most identified as ‘typical’ by youth, parents and the public.” By teaching participants about participation, computer technology, an appreciation of the arts, personal hygiene and disease prevention, while also being able to take part in team and individual sports, the Boys and Girls Club helps each member unlock his or

As a United Way agency, the Boys and Girls Club receives valuable funding through the Lake Martin Area United Way.
