Best of all, it is available free of charge. “It is really cool,” Dadeville Public Library Director Abbi Mangarelli said. “You can look at census data from 1940 and older.” Mangarelli has even looked up some of her and her husband’s family. “You can search immigration,” Mangarelli said. “I found where my husband’s family came off the boat from Italy. appy Thanksgiving! Enjoy your time with Family and Friends this holiday season. Make your own Cranberry Sauce with the help of the Pioneer Woman. Wash 12 oz of cranberries under cool water, and then dump into a medium saucepan. Pour in 1 cup of cranberry juice or whatever juice you choose. Pour in 1 cup real maple syrup. Add orange juice (you could also do orange zest, lemon zest, lemon juice – anything citrusy). Stir together and turn heat on high until it reaches a boil. Once it comes to a rolling boil, turn the heat down to medium low and continue cooking over lower heat for about 10 minutes or until the juice is thick. Turn off the heat. Stuffed with Love is back! The library is collecting new stuffed animals to donate to the Tri-County Children’s Advocacy Center. The Tri-County Children’s Advocacy Center provides free services to over 300 children per year who have been abused, neglected, or witnessed a violent crime. The councilors at the Advocacy center do an astonishing job of helping these kids. Once the interview is over the children can pick out a stuffed animal to take home. Stop in to the library to donate a Stuffed Animal the The library is closed Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 24-27 and will reopen on Monday, Nov. 28 for regular business.

and there is an educational component as well. We have been combining it with sport fishing. They have been looking at water quality. There has been a huge effort on aquatic education.” Alabama Scenic River Trail’s Joanne Ninesling agrees that River Kids is more than just getting children on the water. “River Kids is not just any project to bring attention to the rivers,” Ninesling said. “It is a project to teach water safety to the children. So many children are afraid to get on the water. They do not know the processes for getting on the water and that is one of the primary goals of River Kids is to teach safe access to the water. Ninesling is responsible for the grant application to RC&D. “I was lucky enough to run into the folks from the RC&D at the Harold Banks Canoe Trail opening,” Ninesling said. “I filled out a grant application for funding.” The grant from Coosa Valley RC&D for just over $5,000 has been used to purchase 15 kayaks, 15 paddles, floatation devices and a trailer.

River Kids may be in its first year but it is not limited to just limited to Tallapoosa County. “We now have 24 pilot counties and 35 trained instructors,” Nichols said. “We have transformed it into something that is now reaching people. This is our first official season. We started in May and just wrapped up. We have reached over 800 youth so far.” Nichols says the program is something locals can get involved in. “The program is being built at the local level,” Nichols explained. It is being built at the grassroots level with the help of government, corporations, private businesses and individuals in partnership. It has been a great success so far.” Coosa Valley RC&D’s Terry Martin credits others with programs ability to hand out grants. “We would not be able to do these grants were it not for our representatives like Mark Tuggle,” Martin said. “He really pushes for us to get these grants. What they do is protect and enhance our natural and human resources.” Alabama Scenic River Trail

Founder and President Frank Couch is very appreciative of the RC&D grants. “RC&D has been very supportive of us over our 10 years,” Couch said. “When we first started, we had a $12,000 bill for guide books. They came through for us and have helped us with other projects since. I can’t say enough thank yous.” In the last year, other grants from the Coosa Valley RC&D have been used in Tallapoosa County to print the Harold Banks Canoe Trail brochure, to help with a garden for the special education program at Benjamin Russell High School, the 4-H kayak program last summer, a radio project for county firefighters and honey bee education to name a few. The grant total for eight projects totaled over $42,000 from RC&D but was parlayed into a project total value of over $133,000. Martin hopes others will come to RC&D with their ideas. “We are always looking how to help others,” Martin said. “Almost anything conservation or humanities wise quickly rises to the top.”

There were a number of new ways Williams said they did this. The school organized what she called a Lighthouse team made up of administration, faculty and staff that meet once a week. She said they brainstorm new directions for the students each week, and coordinate ways to instill the concepts in the students, largely through student led activities. Williams said some of those concepts were personal traits like proactive goal setting, working as a team and understanding other points of view – or working well with others. She said the students have started keeping

leadership notebooks in their classrooms. In the notebooks she said they set personal and academic goals and measure their progress toward those goals at the end of each semester. Williams said they have a tree in the lobby of the school where they log the students’ “random acts of kindness.” One of the larger changes came by way of a student led televised broadcast called the Tiger Network News, or TN&N. She said the students go through the “7 Habits” and talk about a number of things going on throughout the school, like the lunch menu. Williams said the

students watch the broadcast on a television in each classroom, She said they had recently acquired a green screen to act out scenarios. “The great thing about this program is that it was really encouraged and supported by our central office,” Williams

said, referring to Superintendent Joseph Windle. Williams said Windle and a district representative will be present at the Nov. 30 ceremony in the school’s gymnasium where students would perform skits, sing and release balloons.

Don’t let fire T ruin your Thanksgiving

T

hanksgiving is a time that is supposed to be about appreciation, family and building lasting positive memories. But this week the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office reminded us that for many reasons, Thanksgiving can be a time that is ripe for tragedy as well. Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires, with three times as many fires occurring on that day. Fire officials say it is easy to get distracted or lose track of what’s going on in the kitchen when busy or inexperienced cooks are trying to prepare several dishes while entertaining family and friends. The Alabama Department of Insurance State Fire Marshal’s Division offers these tips for a safer Thanksgiving Day: • Always stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling or broiling food. If you have to leave the kitchen for even a short time, turn off the stove. • Keep anything that can catch fire such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains away from the stovetop. • Turn pot handles toward the center of the stove. • Keep the number of people in your kitchen to a minimum, especially children. Crowded kitchens cause confusion and often result in burns. • In the event of a stovetop fire, carefully slide a cookie sheet or lid over the pan and turn off the stove. Never attempt to carry a hot pan to the sink. • If you have a fire in the oven, close the oven door and turn off the heat. Once the oxygen is depleted, the fire will go out. Wait until the oven is completely cooled before opening the door again. This applies to microwave ovens, too. Many of these ideas are common sense, but it never hurts to have a gentle reminder as we prepare our massive holiday meal. Have a happy, safe Thanksgiving.

he newsroom is crazy this time of year, not like it isn’t crazy most of the time anyway. But around a holiday, we have to work ahead and the three papers we do on some days of the week becomes five and we often need a map to see where we are and what comes next. But even with the craziness, I still feel like I am the luckiest man on earth. Since it’s the time for giving thanks, I thought I’d share I am thankful for the hand that I have been dealt. I have been blessed in so many ways, despite being a person who has made so many mistakes and bad choices. I am living proof that God smiles on dumb animals. I am so thankful for my family. My mom and dad are no longer here on earth, but the knowledge that they shared with me has served me well. The example they set for me showed me the proper way to treat people with respect. Above all, I am thankful that they taught me how to live, love and laugh and make the most of what I have been given. I can’t thank them enough. I am thankful for having someone special in my like – a person who understands you and puts up with you – is a blessing. I am thankful to have that special someone in my life. I am thankful to have two incredible daughters who are so much like me that it is frightening. In addition to being my babies, they are also my best friends. Through thousands of softball tournaments, NSYNC concerts, countless movies and mini catastrophes

MITCH SNEED Editor

– they have never failed to make me smile when I think of them. I look at them today and realize that they are my greatest accomplishment. I am thankful to have so many incredible friends who have stood beside me when I did things that had some running for cover. I’m not talking about friends of the social media variety – I mean the friends who will be there no matter what. They say you learn who your real friends are when they see you at your worst, and I found that I had some of the best people in the world on my friends list. I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to make this community my home. Getting the opportunity to live, work and deliver the news here is a dream come true. I have enjoyed meeting the great people who live here, and working to tell their stories and the news that are important to our readers. I can’t thank the people here enough for giving us tips, ideas and feedback. That is what makes what we do here possible. I say it all the time, but I have the best job in the world. Sure, there are days when the hours get long and the workload is heavy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have found a job that isn’t work, just like my high school principal Julian Mock who passed away earlier this year told me to seek out. I am so thankful for being led here in my professional

life. Part of what makes this job so great is that staff here is made up of hard-working, dedicated people with the same mission. We want to make this paper the best it can be. There hasn’t been a single time when they weren’t willing to work the extra hour or go the extra mile to get the best story out to readers. That attitude goes from the top down here at Tallapoosa Publishers. I can’t thank Kenneth Boone enough for allowing me to be a part of the team he has assembled here. I am thankful to have everything I need and almost everything I could ever ask for. I don’t go to bed hungry, and I don’t worry if the lights will be on when I wake up. I have my health, even though some days I feel all the miles I have put on this 55-year-old body. I know I talk about my dad’s sayings and wisdom often in this space, but today one of the best things he ever told me seems fitting. These words came while he laid in a hospital bed in Asheville, North Carolina, the day before he died. “When you get to a place in life where you are happy with where you are, who you are with, what you have and what you do – it is something else,” Dad said. “That’s contentment and the kind of happy that most people never get to feel. If you get that feeling, make sure you just smile, think of me and hit those knees to thank God for letting you have that feeling.” I am thankful. It’s time for me to hit my knees. A trip to Jordan for our troops

I

’m writing this column from 38,000 feet in the air somewhere over the Atlantic. I’m sitting in coach, so I feel like a T-Rex trying to write this thing. It’s not the most pleasant of writing conditions, but the show must go on, as did our show when we all of a sudden found ourselves a man down. The GIs of Comedy were booked to entertain troops at an undisclosed location in Jordan. We usually hit multiple countries and installations on our overseas tours, but this one was different. We had just one stop, so it was going to be a turn and burn. I met P.J. and Walter, the other two guys on the tour, at the airport in Atlanta. Walter texted me to ask how far out I was. I don’t think he realized I only lived 90 minutes from the airport. I think I’d just rolled out of bed when I texted him back. P.J. and Walter had been traveling all day. They were tired before I even got started. The itinerary had us traveling from Atlanta to Philadelphia to Paris to Amman. For me, that was around 24 hours of travel time. For P.J., it was around 36. Walter, well, Walter got stuck in Philadelphia due to a passport issue. It expires in February, but in order to enter Jordan, there must be at least six months

JODY FULLER Guest Columnist

remaining on the passport. We sure hated to lose him, but at the same time, we are glad the snafu happened in Philly rather than the other side of the world. When we landed in Jordan, we had to pay the equivalent of $60.00 for a visa. Those guys at immigration control are always a little sketchy and are never in a hurry. The fastest he moved throughout our encounter involved his finger and his nose, but I’ll just stop right there. Speaking of picking, it was too late in the evening for U.S. personnel to pick us up, so we had to take a taxi to our hotel. The taxi drivers were on us like seagulls on a clumsy kid with crackers. If you’ve ever driven in that part of the world, then you know it is absolute chaos. If you have yet to experience the phenomenon, just think of the worst high-speed traffic you have ever seen and multiply it by infinity and you’ll be half way there. It’s not for the faint of heart, but the babies riding on the dashboards don’t seem to be fazed by it a bit.

We were picked up the next morning at 11 by our people. They took us out for lunch, and I have to be honest. The lamb patty covered in caramelized onions and caulk may have been the worst thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. Fortunately, I filled up on bread and hummus. They took good care of us. The show itself went amazingly well. P.J. and I did this same base two years ago, so we knew it would be a good time. The venue is just too cool. Instead of doing 35 minutes apiece had we had Walter, each of us did almost an hour before coming back up together for story time. By all accounts, it was a great show. There’s nothing more special than entertaining troops who are so far from home. It will never get old, and I will never take it for granted. I’m just a kid from Alabama who had a dream, but per the usual, I’m ready to get home. One day, maybe we’ll have all our troops home, too. Until then, we’ll keep on going over to see them. premise beer and wine license.” The measure carried with Mathis being the sole descending vote. Steve Thomas of CDG, the firm handling the grant for the courthouse project, about where in the process the project was. Thomas explained that no round about could be approved without a traffic study and the project is limited to sidewalks, lighting and landscaping between the curb and the buildings. Thomas also explained that this is the second time that Dadeville had been awarded a grant for this project and that the town handed it back and that if it happened again would created problems. “To hand it back again would be greatly frowned on,” Thomas said. “They basically said if it happens again that the city would never get a similar grant.” Thomas said for the project to be started to meet the state deadlines, the town would need to start design work next month. “We have to start next month,” Thomas said. “That would allow the Alabama Department of Transportation to review the plans and us to make necessary changes before putting it out for bid.” Thomas anticipated it going to bid in October and selected a contractor in November of next year, the last month to get the project started to meet the state deadline. The project has been combined with the same project from the Tallapoosa

County Commission. Emma Jean Thweatt was at the meeting to express the commission’s wishes. “This is our last chance to do anything for downtown Dadeville,” Thweatt said. “Otherwise we are going to become Jacksons Gap or Camp Hill.” Paul Monroe informed the council that title searches had been completed on 44 properties that have been selected to be part of the demolition grant project. Monroe gave a history of the project to date and asked if the council wanted to proceed with property owners volunteering for the program or for some form of mandatory compliance. Many on the council thought the voluntary procedure had been previously voted on but went ahead and voted again to go with the voluntary program though Teneeshia GoodmanJohnson voted against the voluntary program. “We have some in my district that will never come into compliance,” Johnson said. “I think we need to put something out there to take care of some of these properties.” Mathis was adamantly for the volunteer program. “I want to make it voluntary,” Mathis said. “Otherwise you will end up with a property owner on their property with a shotgun when the bulldozer comes.” Monroe also informed the council that the grant project at the industrial park would be closed out in the next month with the state. The council approved

a one time raised, which amounts to a holiday bonus to city employees based on years service to the city. “We appreciate our employees,” Mayor Wayne Smith said. “This is a way to show our appreciation for all that they do.” The one time raise amounts to a total of $8,550 and averages about $300 per employee. The Dadeville City Council also: • approved the minutes from the organizational meeting and the last meeting. • approved the hiring of a new police officer to replace one resigning to go back to college. • approved the purchase of bullet proof vests for the police department with a federal grant. The city’s match is $5,000. • moved the meeting time of the council to 6 p.m. and pre-meeting to 5:30 p.m. to allow more participation from citizens. • learned that the new location of the Ice House received ALDOT approval. • instructed building inspector Michael Richardson to send friendly letters to the property owners of Fred’s and Dollar General asking what improvements they plan to make to their parking lots. • appointed Dewanna Giles and Harvey Canaday to the Housing Authority Board at the recommendation of Stanley Johnson. • learned that Charter and AT&T are moving there wires to the newly installed Alabama Power poles in the central part of town.

conversations with managing partner of Copper’s Grill Don Arthur. Arthur gave them, along with Dadeville High School Key Club members, an insider’s look at the rapidly revolving world of restaurant management. He talked about all of the changes made in the restaurant’s first year and announced some big changes to come. Kiwanian John Durr introduced Hiett and Arthur to the room. Durr talked about his time meeting with Hiett before he purchased Stillwaters and how he had strongly encouraged the move due to the near state of disrepair the course had fallen into. Hiett purchased the course last year after living in the Stillwaters community for about three years and owned a golf-course maintenance company. “These two guys in my opinion are responsible for a revival that is going on in Stillwaters,” said Durr, before asking Hiett to the podium. He talked about the changes underway at the course, and the number of

changes that had been made so far. In just a little over a year he said could not believe the increase in interest in the course. “Everybody told me if this thing was open we’d play golf or come eat at the restaurant, it’s sure enough happened,” said Hiett. Hiett said there were two sides to Stillwaters – the golf and the restaurant – and he

went over a brief history of the course’s own brief history. He talked about hiring the course’s PGA professional Rob Witherington, and how he was introduced to Arthur before fielding questions from the members. He answered questions about how drought conditions were affecting the greens, and what was going on in the golf industry.

years for all the public libraries in the state,” Mangarelli explained. “It is great. We could not afford it by ourselves.” Mangarelli explained there are a few differences between the library edition and Ancestry.com people can purchase. “You can’t save like if you bought Ancestry. com,” Mangarelli said. “There you can save records to your account. With the library edition, you can download records or print them but you can not save to Ancestry. com.” The library allows for free use of the computers and charges 25 cents per page to print them out but Mangarelli offered another solution to those want to keep the records they find. “We will be happy to help anyone save them to flash drives,” Mangarelli explained. “Or we can help set up email so they can email themselves.” Mangarelli did offer some advice that will make searching for ancestors easier. “Prepare a list of names before you come,” Mangarelli said. “Start with your grandparents’ names. If you know things like when they were born or where they lived for certain time period. And we are here to help if you get stuck. In addition to the having Ancestry.com Library edition, the Dadeville Public Library has other tools to help. The library holds an entire collection of the Heritage Books for the State of Alabama and Tap Roots. “We even have publications from individuals,” Mangarelli said. “They would leave us a copy after putting something together while researching their family.”

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Every year in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November families gather for a day of giving thanks, feasting, and family time. Thanksgiving is a National holiday which is set aside to give thanks for the many blessings you have received in the past year and the ones you have to look forward to in the year to come. The history of Thanksgiving Day dates all the way back to 1621 when a group known as the Pilgrims sailed from Europe to America on a ship named the 0D\Ă€RZHU WKH\ ZHUH VHHNLQJ UHOLJLRXV IUHHGRP :KLOH WKH QHZ $PHULFDQ VHWtlers in Plymouth, Massachusetts, tried to establish colonies, they endured great KDUGVKLSV 7KH ORFDO ,QGLDQV WKH :DPSDQRDJ 7ULEH VDZ WKH 3LOJULPV LQ GHVSHUate need of food and shelter. The Sobering Truth: Don’t Drink & Drive Millions of people die each year due to alcohol- related automobile accidents. Many people simply do not realize how much alcohol affects one’s ability to operate a motor vehicle. Others mistakenly feel they won’t be among the many people who cause injuries to themselves or other motorists when operating a vehicle in an impaired state. Thanksgiving is the next major holiday on the horizon, and statistics have overwhelmingly shown that this is the most widely-travelled holiday of the year. This trend also falls on the heels of what is known as “Black Wednesday,” or the busiest night of the year for bars. There are a number of reasons for this including visiting family, social gatherings, stress relief, and the fact that very few people are required to work the following day. If your plans this holiday weekend involve alcohol, the best way to avoid a DUI arrest or causing injury to yourself or others is to travel with a designated driver, store the phone number for the local taxi service in your phone, celebrate at home or stay with a friend.

Chief David Barbour of the Dadeville Police Department stresses, “As the time nears to gather with family and friends, please act responsibly and don’t drive if you’ve consumed alcohol. By working together, we can keep people safe on the roads this season.” Whatever your reason for travel, it’s important to remember to keep your eyes open and remain alert while driving for the next several weeks, as the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is one of the most deadly and likewise one of the most heavily-patrolled times of the entire calendar. Expect sobriety checks throughout your community as this has led to a reduction in alcohol-related accidents by approximately 9%. According to Chief Willie Robinson, ACPD, “Drinking alcohol interferes with coordination and judgement and the affects can last for hours, sometimes into the next morning.” Chief Robinson urges drivers to be safe on the roads this week as the consequences can last a lifetime.

Ben’s sermon was titled “Disciples Give Ultimate Allegiance to Christ” which was excellent. It was the day known as “The Festival of the Lord”, like the end of the calendar year for Christians. Christ reigns supreme. In Christ all things will be fulfilled. To Christ alone comes the supreme allegiance in our lives. Behold the glory of the eternal Christ, who rules above the earth. As subjects of Christ the King, we are disciples who evangelize in word and deed. Disciples resist grief and practice generosity, yet they also wrestle with God. Don’t we judge ourselves and others on a regular basis? Disciples live by faith! Red Ridge Methodist Church News: Rev. Messer will begin a series from the Book of Isaiah. The sermon this Sunday is titled “Out of the Darkness.” Isaiah 2:1-5. God gave Isaiah the gift of seeing the future. God made a covenant with his people and will never break it. Chapters 4-5 describe

9820. THOUGHT FOR TODAY: It’s better to walk alone, than with a

a wonderful future of Peace when instruments of war will be converted to instruments of farming, when we will be taught God’s laws and will obey them. We can enjoy many benefits of obedience now as we apply God’s word to our lives. This is the beginning of the Advent season. Advent is the season during which Christians of various denominations spiritually prepare to celebrate Christmas. It takes place yearly from the 4th Sunday before Christmas through the 24th. The theme of the first lighting of the Advent Wreath is The Promise of Peace. The choir’s anthem is from the Cantata “Believe” “O Come O Come Emmanuel”. Choir rehearsal for the Christmas cantata Dec. 4 at 9:30 a.m. continues. It is the time of the year to purchase a Christmas gift or gifts for DHR children who would have no Christmas and for nursing home patients that have no family. Cindy Pierce has distributed names for DHR purchases and Beth Cox for nursing home recipients. Mark Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. for the Ladies Luncheon. Happy Thanksgiving to all. RR is located at 8091 County Road 34, Dadeville. Paul Messer is pastor. For information call 256-825-

DADEVILLE VARSITY BASKETBALL PREVIEW

Tigers starting season with young team By CATHY HIGGINS Sports Editor

The Dadeville Tigers will be hitting the hardwood this season with a relatively young lineup of athletes on the roster. In addition to three seniors and six juniors on the team, three freshmen and one eighth-grader will play from time to time. “Some of my B-team members will dress out with varsity when the B-team doesn’t have a game,” said Dadeville head basketball coach Rodney Taylor. “We’ve got a good group of young kids. They’re inexperienced but they’ve got good attitudes.” While the coach sees the athletes’ potential for this season, he intends to use their varsity experience this season as a building block for the future. “The more we can expose them to playing on a varsity team this year it’s going to help us in the next few years to come,” Taylor said. It also helps the Tigers now as Dadeville senior small forward Jalentski Jackson is unable to play due to a fractured foot. “He just made the team this year but he’s not able to practice,” Taylor said. Plus, junior small forward Donquavious Tucker is contending with an ankle injury he got during football season. “But he’s playing through that pretty well,” Taylor said. Tucker is also expected to help lead the Tigers to a successful season. So is junior guard Jalen Sullivan. “But pretty much all of them have to contribute,” Taylor said. That contribution includes each team member challenging the others to be better on the court. “I’m really looking for a group effort that they work together, push each other and help each other,” Taylor said. That’s vital as Dadeville’s team is still refining its offense. “If we can attack the basket either off the high drive or the pick and the roll, I think it’ll

Still, the coach is aiming high for the Tigers. “If we can do what we need to do to get those wins, then come February we’re going to be playing the best basketball in the All-Area Tournament,” Taylor said. “Last year was the first year we hadn’t been to the playoffs in nine years and we want to get back.” The Dadeville varsity boys basketball team opens this season at home by hosting Holtville at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1.

be a combination of everybody contributing to scoring,” Taylor said. The coach is aiming for that offense to be an improvement over last year’s average of scoring 50 points a game. “It’s a process,” Taylor said. He hopes that process leads to post-season play for the Tigers. “We want to get to February in the Area Tournament,” Taylor said. That won’t be easy as the Tigers’ schedule includes such stiff competition as 6A Benjamin Russell and Auburn and 5A Beauregard and

Dadeville sophomore Jamela Moss prepares to make her way to the basket during the varsity girls basketball practice Friday.

When the Dadeville Lady Tigers tip off their season next week, they’ll do so with a team filled with a mixed roster. “We’ve got three seniors but we’ve got a mixed group of girls,” said Dadeville head basketball coach Pam Holloway. “We’re looking forward to a very positive year. We’re working hard and trying to improve.” That includes improving the health of some athletes coming in from minor ankle injuries from volleyball. Fortunately, the 4A team is starting off healthy for the most part. “We just pray it stays that way,” Holloway said. The coach is expecting a lot from all of her athletes as they face competition this season. “I want them to be able to step up as a team and do a lot of things on their own, communicating better and talking with one another on the floor,” Holloway said. Several players have gained the coach’s attention for both leadership and performance. Among them is junior Quanesha Presley. “I expect her to be a leader, especially in scoring,” Holloway said. “She knows the

game pretty well.” Senior Raven Tuck has also shown a lot of potential when getting ready to head out on the hardwood this season. “She works really hard and I expect a lot of leadership from her,” Holloway said. While senior Tamya Morgan doesn’t lead in scoring, her contribution should be an integral part of the Lady Tigers’ success this season. “She’s a good leader on and off the court,” Holloway said. Some of the team’s younger members are expected to stand out this season, as well, including sophomores Jamela Moss and Jasmine Hill. “I’m expecting them to step up this year,” Holloway said. Dadeville’s strength will be important in helping the Lady Tigers come out on top as their schedule includes such 6A opponents as Benjamin Russell and Auburn. “We play a lot of tough teams,” Holloway said. “It’s good competition.” That includes 3A foe Central Coosa. “They’re always a good rivalry for us,” Holloway said. The Lady Tigers’ season tips off at 5:30 Thursday, Dec. 1, at home as Dadeville hosts Holtville.

The Dadeville Record

Sen. Richard Shelby’s ride has been long and eventful

O

ur Senior U.S. Senator Richard Shelby will begin his sixth six-year term in January. He is an Alabama treasure. Over the past 30 years as our Senator he has brought millions of federal dollars home to Alabama. Richard Shelby currently reigns as Alabama’s most prominent political figure. He is one of Alabama’s three greatest Senators in history along with Lister Hill and John Sparkman. Shelby is easily one of the most influential political figures in the nation. Shelby has had a perfectly scripted rise to political power and acclaim. In 1970 at age 35, he entered politics and was elected to the State Senate from Tuscaloosa. He ran for an open seat in Congress in 1978 and won. In

1986 he rolled the dice, gave up his safe congressional seat and took on an incumbent Senator. In 1986, Shelby was a 50-year-old congressman, a Democrat who had a stellar conservative voting record. He was safe in his U. S. House seat. Therefore, his decision to challenge an incumbent U. S. Senator was a gamble. His friends cautioned him that it was an uphill battle and he should not risk his safe House seat. His basic reply was, “I’m one of 435 in congress, given the rules of seniority, it will be 20 more years before I can chair a committee or subcommittee. They don’t even know my name up here. I’m either going to the Senate and be somebody, or I’m going home and make money.”

STEVE FLOWERS Columnist

One factor that the average political observer was not aware of that Shelby probably sensed was that his congressional district was destined to be the first African American district after reapportionment in 1990. That is what happened to Shelby’s 7th District. Although it would be a daunting task to upset an incumbent, U. S. Senator, Jeremiah Denton had written a textbook on how to lose a Senate seat during his six-year term. Denton was elected as Alabama’s first Republican Senator since Reconstruction in 1980. He was swept into office on the coattails

of Ronald Reagan who carried Alabama in a landslide. Alabamians knew very little about Denton except that he had been a naval officer and a wellknown national POW in the Vietnam War. His patriotic hero position sold well in Alabama, especially with Reagan headed to the White House. Yet Shelby beat Denton. It was close and Shelby had to spend some of his personal money the last week of the campaign to carry out the upset, but Alabama has been the better for Richard Shelby’s 1986 gamble. He was been reelected in 1992, 1998, 2004, 2010 and now in 2016. I had the opportunity to fly back from Washington with and visit with Shelby a few years after his 1986 victory. He told me

the inside story of the last six days of that campaign that illustrates how important money and media are in today’s modern politics. When he decided to run against Denton, he knew the importance of money to a campaign. He also knew that it was essential to get the best media guru regardless of the price. Therefore, he spared no expense and got the best pollster and media people in America. About six days out, he was six points behind. The pollster told him to put $100,000 of TV ads in the Birmingham market using a certain ad and it would raise him two points. He did and it did. The next day the media man and the pollster told him to spend $50,000 on TV ads in the Mobile market using a certain ad and it would give him a one

point boost. He did and it did. The next day the pollster told him to run a certain ad in the Huntsville market and spend $60,000 and it would raise him a point. He did and it did. Two days out the pollster told him to run a certain ad in both Birmingham and Montgomery and it would raise him by three points. He did and it did. He won by one point. I suspect the ad most suggested by the pollster and the media guys was the one where Denton was saying he didn’t have time to come home and kiss babies’ butts. See you next week. Bentley makes funds available to help fight wildfires STAFF REPORT TPI Staff

MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley announced Monday that he has approved $690,000 in emergency funds to support the efforts of the Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) and fire departments as they fight dangerous wildfires across the state. “In recent months, Alabama has faced extreme drought conditions that have enabled a record number of fires to form across the state,” Bentley said. “The Alabama Forestry Commission and local fire departments are to be commended for their countless hours of service and efforts in keeping Alabamians safe. With no significant rain in sight, I know the emergency funds will help cover some of the expenses AFC per-

sonnel are facing as they are working to contain fires throughout the state.” From Oct. 1 to Nov. 7, AFC has spent $1,128,000 in equipment usage, repairs, fuel, and man-hours worked, as well as 8,000 hours in compensatory time accrual. In the process of battling wildfires across the state, the agency is expending both resources and funding in an inordinately short time. For that same time period, AFC is over budget by approximately $470,000. Although the agency has tried to stay within budget, the wildfires have maxed out financial resources. “These emergency funds will go a long way in protecting lives and property across the state,” said Gary M. Cole, Interim State Forester. “The costs incurred from this unusually intense fall wildfire season have already depleted

the Alabama Forestry Commission’s wildfire suppression budget, and we have yet to face the more significant fire season in the spring. We are grateful to Governor Bentley for providing this necessary financial assistance.” As of Nov. 7, all 67 counties in the state of Alabama have been placed under a ‘No Burn’ order which prohibits all outdoor burning. Bentley is currently offering a $5,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of a person who is responsible for setting wildfires. To report persons burning in violation of this law, contact your local law enforcement. For more information on the current wildfire situation in the state, visit Alabama Forestry Commission’s website at www.forestry.alabama.gov.
