Wire transfer scam targets area businesses By Mitch Sneed Outlook Editor
How many times have you received an email from your boss asking you to handle something because they were busy? Ok, lower your hands. It’s a common practice and now some cyber scammers are hoping to play on those routine requests to cheat you out of thousands of dollars at a time. Several local businesses and banks say that the practice known as “spear phishing” has targeted several local businesses. On some occasions, the scam attempt
turned out to be an expensive lesson in the latest in cyber crime. “It’s something that we in the banking industry see almost every day,” said Mark Spencer, senior vice president and central Alabama area executive for USAmeriBank. “The email comes from an address that is very similar to someone in your company. It looks real and sounds like a logical request from someone in authority at your business. “The reason they are so realistic is that this is a fulltime job for these criminals. They study your website, and in some cases get into your email. They do that
to get information that makes the emails look legitimate and extremely realistic. That’s how good they are.” In January, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center issued a warning about the wire transfer schemes that had surfaced. At that time, FBI statistics showed between October 2013 and December 2014, 1,198 U.S. victims and 928 nonU.S. victims of the scam filed complaints about the same basic type scam. The FBI estimated the losses for U.S. businesses over that period were $179 million and for businesses outside the U.S., the losses
totaled $35 million. That’s pretty big money, and it’s happening right here in our area. Just this week, an employee here at Tallapoosa Publishers got an email that appeared to be from the company’s owner, Kenneth Boone. It asked for $18,000 to be transferred by wire to an account that the email claimed was for one of the vendors used by TPI. There were emails exchanged back and fourth and the wheels were set in motion, but luckily, the TPI employee See SCAM, Page 7

John Wilcox, director of online and alternative education for Tallapoosa County Schools, has been named one of five finalists for the vacant position of superintendent of Eufaula City Schools. Wilcox was one of 29 applicants for the Eufaula position. He said he expects the Barbour County system to make a decision either this week or early next week. “I think they will let the finalists know something soon,” said Wilcox. “I expect it Wilcox to be this week or maybe Monday of next week.” Wilcox, who entered education in 1988 after working for newspapers for several years, served as assistant superintendent in Tallapoosa County from 2009 until the recent reorganization of the central office, when he assumed his current position. A Clay County native, Wilcox graduated high school from Goodwater High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in comprehensive social studies education from Auburn University and a master’s in educational leadership from Troy University at Phenix City. Denim and Diamonds raises funds for United Way By Corey Arwood Record Staff Writer
The Lake Martin Area United Way will receive proceeds from what could be one of the most well-attended Denim and Diamonds events so far. Saturday’s Denim and Diamonds Charity Ball, was the fourth hosted by The Dadeville Area Chamber of Commerce at the world famous Rodeo Club. The DACC called the event “An Evening of Giving,” and a portion of the proceeds were set for the LMAUW and the various local charities it funds. “It was a success, we had a great turnout,” Linda Andrews, DACC Executive
Kiwanis get lesson in safety on all levels from Dadeville PD By Corey Arwood Record Staff Writer
The Dadeville police chief and a DPD general investigator spoke to local Kiwanis Club members Thursday as part of Law Enforcement Appreciation Month. The topics varied from local community-relations efforts, crime in the area, national trends and even international terrorism. They were introduced by city council and Kiwanis club member Mickey Tarpley. “Since I was elected to the city council I have learned more about why I am glad I am not a police officer. It’s probably the most thankless job often times that we have in our city. But, we have a great group,” Tarpley said.

Sharon Fuller, LMAUW executive director and DACC board member, said that the auction went well, the music, new this year by Lisa and the E-Lusion, and the food were good, and there was larger turnout than previous years. She said that nearly 200 people had signed up beforehand to attend the event which was more than the last ball. “It was probably the best attendance we had even with the fact that Benjamin Russell was in playoffs, Fuller said. She said that she did not recognize a lot of the faces she saw at the event, and that
Tallapoosa County Schools have a taken a step that no one else in the state has when it comes to protecting its students in an emergency event. In October, the system along with the command staff at the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s office, Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s office dispatchers, the Dadeville Police Department, the Dadeville Fire Department, the Alexander City Rescue Squad and Tallapoosa County EMA took part in a table-top exercise. “I know of no other school system in the state that has gone to the step of table top exercises,” Tallapoosa County School superintendent Joe Windle said at Monday’s Board of Education meeting. “We are on the cutting edge in Tallapoosa County in dealing with preparation and planning for a catastrophic event.” “It is something we have been talking about for several years,” Tallapoosa County Chief Deputy Sheriff David McMichael explained to the board. “We have been training in the schools as first responders but not with everyone that would be involved in an incident. We wanted to go that next step where we had all the parties that would be involved

Tarpley went to on to discuss the negative image that is brought to mind from traffic tickets and violations that gives run-ins with the police the connotation of something to avoid. However, he spoke about the other aspects of their jobs in regard to crime in the area that he had learned about through his close dealings during his time in office. “We don’t have exactly what’s happening in Paris, France, but we have a lot of things that are very similar on a lot smaller scale,” said Tarpley. On that note he turned the podium over to Chief David Barbour, who in turn introduced and quickly ceded his time to General Investigator Sgt. Jonathan Floyd. Floyd began by commenting on what he said was the importance See KIWANIS, Page 3

County’s jobless numbers improve October’s 5.5 percent unemployment rate is a seven-year low Staff Reports Outlook Staff
The unemployment rate in Tallapoosa County fell to yet another sevenyear low in October, with Gov. Robert Bentley announcing on Friday that the county’s unemployment rate was at 5.5 percent for the month. That rate is down from September’s 5.8 percent and almost a full percentage point under the 6.4 percent unemployment rate posted in Tallapoosa County in October 2014. On top of that good news, Tallapoosa County is showing a better unemployment rate than the state average. According to stats released Friday, Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted October unemployment rate is 5.9 percent, down from September’s rate of 6.0 percent and below October 2014’s rate of 6.2 percent. “More jobs are being created, Alabama’s unemployment rate continues to drop and our economy is growing,” Bentley said in a released statement. “The wage and salary employment is at its highest level for the year. It has not been this high in almost seven years. We are one step closer to full employment and my effort to create jobs will continue until every Alabamian who wants a job has an opportunity to have one.” Statistics show that there were 17,840 working in Tallapoosa County in October, up from the 16,790 during the same month last year. Only 1,043 were listed as unemployed in Tallapoosa County. Wage and salary employment increased in October by 7,200 to 1,965,000 in the state. Monthly gains were seen in the government sector where jobs were up by 3,800, the professional and business services

sector where a 2,600 job gain was seen, and the trade, transportation, and utilities sector where 2,200 were added during the month. Over the year in the state, wage and salary employment increased by 21,100, with gains in the leisure and hospitality sector (+5,200), the education and health services sector (+4,700), and the professional and business services sector (+3,800), among others. The last time wage and salary employment was at this level or above was in November 2008, when it was 1,970,900. “Not only are we seeing the highest wage and salary employment numbers of the year, we’ve also surpassed 2015 growth expectation by nearly 8,000 jobs,” Alabama Department of Labor Commissioner Fitzgerald Washington said. “Economists forecasted wage and salary growth of 33,800, and we’ve already seen growth of 41,700 through October alone*. We still have two months to go, and those are traditionally strong due to holiday hiring. The counties continue to show improvement, as well. All 67 counties experienced decreases in their unemployment rates over the month, and only one county registered an increase over the year.” Choctaw County is the only county to register an increase in its unemployment rate over the year, rising from 7.8 percent to 8.4 percent. All other counties saw decreases over the month and either no change or decreases over the year. Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are: Shelby County at 4.0 percent, Lee County at 4.5 percent, and Elmore and Cullman Counties at 4.8. Coosa County had a 6 percent unemployment

Residents report visit from black bear By Mitch Sneed Record Editor
Living in an area of Alexander City, Johnnie and Adelia Warren are used to seeing wildlife around their Fish Pond Road home. But Thursday night they had a close encounter of the bear kind, as a black bear came foraging for food on their back deck. Johnnie said the bear came around 6 p.m. and he was first tipped off when a motion-sensitive security light came on unexpectedly. “We keep our trash in a heavy, 55-gallon can on the back deck,” Warren said. “I strap the lid down with an elastic tie and then it is tied to the railing with another elastic cord. “When I saw that light come on, I looked through the blinds, out the window and the bear was there already digging through the trash,” Johnnie said. “I turned around and got the camera and went to the back door and I guess in rattling the door to get it unlocked I guess I got his attention.” Johnnie said that as he opened the door the bear was already making his way down the steps and off into the dark yard that is adjacent to a wooded area. “When I opened that door, all I saw
was that black rump as it was moving off the porch,” Warren said. “I guess the noise scared him off. I know the light coming on didn’t stop him. I think he appreciated that because he could find something to eat a little easier. “I guess opening that door and seeing me, he decided he didn’t want to stick around.” Coyotes, deer and other critters are plentiful in that area, Adelia said. They have even spotted bears at times. The difference Thursday is that it was so close to the house. “When we saw the bears before, they were in the edge of the woods,” Adelia said. “We couldn’t believe that it came right up on the house with lights on and everything. That was unusual for sure.” Johnnie described the bear as small and theorized that with the colder weather coming, the bear smelled what he thought was food in the trash and came for a quick meal. “He wasn’t big, but you can tell how strong he was,” Johnnie said. “That’s a big trash can and it was strapped down. He ripped that right down and you can see where he busted the lid all up. He made a pretty big mess in no time.”
While bears being seen in our area is unusual, there are some that roam this area regularly. Last summer, the area was abuzz after a small black bear was spotted in Jacksons Gap and again near Willow Point and in Coosa and Elmore counties. At the time of those sightings, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Conservation Officer Sgt. Michael East confirmed that they were investigating the bear talk and said that they have had numerous reports over the year of bears being spotted in virtually all areas of Tallapoosa County. According to the Alabama Department of Wildlife and Fisheries website, “while Alabama has had a resident black bear population for many years in southwest Alabama, during the last decade, an expanding population has been established in northeast Alabama. The bears have gradually migrated from northwest Georgia following the preferred habitats of the Appalachian foothills as they extend into our state.” East said last summer that as long as the bears are “acting like a bear and not becoming aggressive or being a nuisance,” they typically just “leave them alone. “

of civic engagement and community involvement. He commended the high school key club and members of the Kiwanis Club at the meeting, and said that there was a lack of interest today in the types of civic involvement they promoted. He thanked them for the opportunity to speak. “In a small city like Dadeville, the police department, city government, the Kiwanis Club the high school Key Club, we all need one another,” said Floyd. “There is no room in a community like Dadeville for separatism. There is no room in Dadeville for someone to feel elitist.” He went on to talk about the police department’s efforts in No Shave November. The proceeds from which, he said would go to partnerships with the Child Advocacy Center and efforts to get presents for the children who have been victim to abuse. He said that as an agency police departments have a unique opportunity to have a positive impact on any community because of their presence and visibility. “Truth be known a lot of the negative images and the negative interactions that we have with people were initiated by their original actions,” said Floyd. “We understand that a lot of people do not understand what we do. And if we’re going to better effect the city of Dadeville
and Tallapoosa County we want to educate the community.” However he said the varied nature of their duties and their personal interaction with each call contributes to a lot of the recent negative perception of police. “It was because of your action that we interacted with you,” said Floyd. “He arrested you because of something you did. You initiated the interaction. It was your actions that brought about your meeting with law enforcement we didn’t go seeking you.” He mentioned some of the problem areas for crime in the county and said that Dadeville is not number one, but is too
close to the top of the state charts in thefts and assaults among towns its size. Phone scams, online scams, and what Floyd called “get rich quick schemes” were also high on the list of problem areas. He advised residents to be wary and always expect a “catch” from any offer. After the meeting, members thanked the DPD and asked questions about crime related events around town. Once more the conversation turned to recent international terrorist activity when one member asked about any possible terrorist connection or activity in Tallapoosa County.
Floyd said there was none. However, that morning he had been contacted by a concerned resident who notified him of a Facebook profile that he was worried might have connections to terrorist groups. It was a personal profile with a location as listed to be in the area. According to Floyd there was no indication of threat or any connection whatsoever to a terrorist group. The resident’s concern came from a personal profile picture with what appeared to be Arabic writing.

oday’s Record features another big event that benefits the Lake Martin Area United Way. While final numbers are still being totaled, all accounts point to the Denim and Diamonds Charity Ball at the Rodeo Club being a record year for the event. The ball is put on by the Dadeville Chamber of Commerce and those in attendance seemed to have a great time while helping a great cause. The generosity of our community, particularly at this time of the year, is amazing. The need in our community is great and the agency has asked for area residents to be “Super Heroes” and help the organization raise the funds that will make the work done by 26 agencies possible. We know that this is not the last time we will remind you, but it’s not too late for you to get involved this year. This is probably one of the most important years for United Way to make its goal. There is a large need in the community among local charities. Your donations make sure that people in need have the most basic needs like food and shelter at times when they have few other options. From working to end homelessness, provide youth services, promote early learning, offer health services and help older adults – your dollars do great things for our community. Donations can be made with confidence the money will reach those in need. The program runs with minimal overhead. Our area is made up of people with big hearts and we know that residents will again become “Super Heroes” and give to this worthy cause. At this time of Thanksgiving, we here at the Outlook are thankful for all the good done by the organizations helped by the United Way. Your donations will help make a difference in someone’s life. Let’s continue to do our part to help the United Way help the community this year.

ometimes my mind wanders a little. Doctors tell me it isn’t that I’m crazy, but just typical of an aging man with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. So here lately I’ve been trying to channel those random thoughts, but jotting them down or typing them into my phone or recording them on the voice memo feature. See, I’m not afraid of technology. So here is what I salvaged from the useless information that popped into my noggin this week. • I heard a call over the scanner where an Alexander City man had called the police for help. Dispatcher: “I need an officer to respond to a residence. The resident says he needs help or at least some advice. He needs to know what to do about a snake in his fireplace.” Officer: ”Seriously? “10-4. I will respond.” Advice? The first thing that popped in my head was to start a fire. Maybe it’s just me. • There is nothing better than country music to sum up some of life’s unfortunate situations. Take this passage from Sam Hunt’s “Breakup in a Small Town.” “She was over me before the grass grew back where she used to park her car, Now, she’s leaving those same marks in someone else’s yard.” Talk about harsh. That is the kind of quick dumping that any guy can relate to. Hunt

wrote the song with Nashville songwriting legend Shane McAnally. Brilliant. • We have all struggled with teaching our children right from wrong. In talking with some friends last week I was reminded of one of those classics when I was a young parent with my own daughter. While toddlers are scooting around on the floor, we have all seen them drop a cookie or a piece of candy on the floor. Trying to be the good parent, we tried to drill some basic sanitary guidelines into their heads as they tried to recoup their dropped loot and eat it. “We don’t eat things off the floor,” I must have said 1,568 times. One day, I saw my daughter drop half a Girl Scout Thin Mint on the floor. It just happened to be the last one in the sleeve. Not knowing I was looking, she picked it up and woofed it down. “Sydney, I know you didn’t eat that cookie off the floor,” I said. “I didn’t eat it off the floor, Dad,” my daughter said. “I picked it up first.” I think that’s when the fivesecond rule was introduced at our house. • Speaking of child rearing,
my daughter reminded me of another classic tale. Jeff Shockley was my best friend and for a time, he was my girls’ Uncle Jeff. They loved to spend time with him and he would often load them up and take them on adventures. One day he showed up in his truck and asked my 4-yearold daughter Sydney if she wanted to go to lunch. She climbed in the truck and off they went. About two hours later they pulled back up and Jeff walked Sydney to the door. “I enjoyed lunch, thanks for going,” he said as he was walking back to his truck. Jeff isn’t known as a big spender, in fact, I think he invented copper wire by finding a penny and stretching it. She appeared to have something all over her face and shirt, so I had to ask about where they had dined. “We went to Sam’s Club,” Sydney said. “That’s why I have dirt on me. He told me to get dirt out of the back of his truck and rub it on me. That way when we went to sample ladies tables, I could say that I was hungry and we didn’t have any food. Because I did so good, we got lots more samples. It was fun.” That was the last lunch trip they had, but keep that in mind if you go to the grocery store hungry on sample day. It seems to work well. Now I have a clear mind. Hope you do, too. Mitch Sneed is the editor of The Record.

went to West Point Thursday night. Usually when people from the Opelika-Auburn area go to West Point, they are either going to the United States Military Academy or they are going to buy a lottery ticket at exit 2. Well, I got off at exit 2 but kept on going. I had a speaking gig in that general area. It went well. They understood me just fine: southern accent, stuttering, and all. Once, while on R&R in Germany, I offered my assistance in taking a photo to an American family. The mother was taking a photo of her husband and children next to a beautiful fountain, so I asked if she’d like for me to take the photo so she could get in there with the rest of the family. Perhaps it was the stutter, the southern accent, or a combination of both, but she looked at me with a tilted head and crinkled eyebrows as she handed me her camera. After I took the photo, I handed the camera back to her as she slowly and loudly said, “You speak very good English.” “Thank you very much. I’m from Alabama. I don’t hear that very often,” I said, as I walked away. Last Monday, I had a speaking gig for a familyowned company in New Jersey. I was warned by the owners that it would be a

tough crowd. I assured them that it would be ok. I believed in myself and told them about a time I received a standing ovation from a group of engineers at eight o’clock in the morning. Talk about a tough crowd… When the mob, I mean, crowd, gathered in the meeting room, it didn’t take long for me to realize my audience for the evening was a diverse mix of the cast of Jersey Shore, the United Nations, and a loud Texan. It was going to be interesting, but I had no fear. I believed in myself. Ok, maybe I had a little fear. If there was a little fear, it slowly went away as I began to meet everyone. In my travels, I’ve learned that good people are good people, no matter where they are from, even people with gold chains and thick Jersey accents. The night went incredibly well. Following the national anthem and a warm introduction, I had them with my first joke. It was smooth sailing for the next 45 minutes. Good clean humor is good clean humor no matter where you
are. I met so many amazing people that I know will be friends from here on out. The event planner, now my friend, is the owner’s daughter. Leading up to the event, her mom was concerned about the comedian not being funny, because she wanted her employees to have a great evening. The next day, my friend texted me the following: my mom is in love with you. Of course, she’s not really in love with me, but she had a great time. I think I talked to just about everyone in attendance that night and they all had a great time. When discussing a return, a couple of them said, “We need Jody every year.” “The guy last year was entertaining, but Jody is entertaining with heart,” another gentleman stated. I didn’t write this column to brag on my abilities, because, trust me, I sometimes have shows that don’t go so well. I wrote it to encourage you to believe in yourself, to overcome your fears, and to have heart with all that you do, and trust me; that will get you a long way in this life. County secures funds for water in Micah Hill Wilcox Staff Report Record Staff
Gov. Robert Bentley has announced a grant of $200,000 in funds for infrastructure improvements in Tallapoosa County. The Tallapoosa County Commission was awarded $200,000 each from the Appalachian Regional Commission. Tallapoosa County will use funds to provide public water to 50 households in the Micah Hill community. “The Appalachian Regional Commission has made an important impact on the lives of Alabamians,” Bentley said. “I am pleased to be a part of this program and support the improvements it has helped make in communities.”
Residents in the Micah Hill community have been dependent on private wells and springs as their only source of water. As recently as 2000 and 2007, droughts resulted in wells going dry requiring the county to bring drinking water in on trucks to meet community needs. Recent tests also have shown that much of the well water has a tested positive for coliform bacteria making it unhealthy for consumption. The project will involve installing 38,750 of six-inch water line in the area. Nine fire hydrants also will be added to improve fire suppression. Bentley notified Tallapoosa Commission Chairman Steve Robinson and County Administrator Blake Beck that

In my opinion, an active shooter is an act of domestic terrorism.” McMichael went on to explain that the feedback might have been the biggest thing to come from the exercise. “It brought out things people had not been thinking about,” McMichael said. “The goal was to get everybody involved and talking back and forth across the table

He said he sees the position in Eufaula as an opportunity to advance his career that he is compelled to pursue. “They have a good reputation at Eufaula,” Wilcox said. “It’s a quality school system and, for me, it’s a chance to advance professionally. It’s a good school system looking for a good leader and I’m hopeful we can team up.” Wilcox added that he is happy doing what he’s currently doing for the Tallapoosa County school system. “I’m happy,” Wilcox said. “I’m doing what I love and I love what I do. But I’m at the stage in my career when, if I get a chance for professional advancement, I’ve got to explore it. “I wouldn’t leave Tallapoosa County to go just anywhere. In addition to Wilcox, finalists for the Eufaula position include: • John Beasley, current interim superintendent of Eufaula City Schools; • Sherene Carpenter of Alabaster, coordinator of attendance for Birmingham City Board of Education; • Tena Davis of Alabaster, director of curriculum and instruction for Pelham City Board of Education; and • Don McPherson of New Brockton, former superintendent of Coffee County Board of Education. According to the Eufaula City Schools website, the new superintendent will be named on Dec. 1 and his or her hiring will become effective Jan. 1.

legitimate is to talk to the sender face to face. Another safeguard is to talk to bankers at your financial institution that can help verify the information. The FBI offers these tips: • Always use antivirus software and a firewall. It’s important to obtain and use antivirus software and firewalls from reputable companies. It’s also important to continually maintain both of these through automatic updates. • Enable popup blockers. Popups are regularly used by criminals to spread malicious software. To avoid accidental clicks on or within popups, it’s best to prevent them from appearing in the first place. • Always back up the content on your computer. If you back up, verify, and maintain
offline copies of your personal and application data, ransomware scams will have limited impact on you. If you are targeted, instead of worrying about paying a ransom to get your data back, you can simply have your system wiped clean and then reload your files. • Be skeptical. Don’t click on any emails or attachments you don’t recognize, and avoid suspicious websites altogether. • If you receive a ransomware popup or message on your device alerting you to an infection, immediately disconnect from the Internet to avoid any additional infections or data losses. • Alert your local law enforcement personnel and file a complaint at www.IC3.gov.

TIGERS PREPARE FOR NEW SEASON
Dadeville opens practices to start 2015-2016 basketball campaign By Robert Hudson Record Sports Editor
Preparation for the 2015-2016 basketball season has begun, as the Dadeville Tigers began practices this week. Dadeville held its first practice on Wednesday as it gets set for the season opener on Friday, Nov. 27 at CentralCoosa. Rodney Taylor, head coach of Dadeville, said for whatever the Tigers lack in height this season, they will more than make up for it in athleticism. “It’s the smallest team that I’ve ever had, but we’ve got athletes. I’ve got 11 kids that are athletic,” Taylor said. “The main thing is we’re a team of guards. Of those 11, we have maybe two true post players. I’ve got a couple players in Quay Tucker and LaMeico Black that can play inside or outside.” In terms of starting experience, Taylor said Dadeville will only return one starter in senior point guard Isaiah Hicks. But Taylor added Dadeville is coming off of a strong summer going into 2015-2016. “ShawnD (Jennings) is graduating, so we don’t have him this year. Of my five starters, I’ve only got one back in Isaiah Hicks,” Taylor said. “It’s going to be a learning experience throughout the year. I wasn’t really sure how it’s going to be this year, but we had a good summer and did a lot better than I thought we would in our one play date at home. I thought we did well and it gave us something positive to build on.” While Hicks will be among those expected to take on a leadership role, Taylor said there are also a few others who could provide leadership and energy on the floor for Dadeville this season. “It’s also a young bunch as far as that (leadership) goes. Of course, Isaiah and Quandarius Moss have had a good offseason and he (Moss) has been working hard,” Taylor said. “I’m hoping Quay Tucker will step up and provide some leadership. Margarius Buchanan, as you
saw on the football field, he’s going to compete. The other day, he got hit in the nose pretty good… think he broke it, but he came right back to practice. It’s probably going to be leadership by committee.” However, Taylor is not expecting the Tigers to be a finished product by next Friday’s tipoff, as he fully understands that the various lineups and leaders will emerge as the season progresses. “But as the season goes, somebody will always come to the forefront. Sometimes kids fit into places where you may not have seen them fit into and lineups come together in ways you might not have thought,” Taylor said. “But until you get on that court and compete against other teams, you don’t always fully know how it’s going to come together. We don’t need it to come together next Friday. We need it to come together by February.” And the Tigers will be tested by the time February rolls around. Taylor said this season will present the toughest challenges in his tenure at Dadeville. “It’s going to be the toughest schedule we’ve ever had. Of course, we always play Alex City, LaFayette and Auburn, but we’ve added a game at Wetumpka, going to Clay-Central, Childersburg twice and we’ve added Lanett in the regular season and they’re going to be in our Christmas Tournament. And we also go to Tallassee. So, it’s going to be a tough schedule.” But if the Tigers work hard and develop their roles on the floor successfully, Taylor said their goals for the season should be no less attainable. “It’s just going to be a process every day we practice, every day we play just trying to get better. Our goals are to host the area tournament first, win the area tournament, host the playoff game and go from there,” Taylor said. “Time will tell how we will develop. I think by February, if the kids will develop and we get better as a unit, we could be pretty good team in the 4A Playoffs.”

SEC official Owens talks changes in game of football By Robert Hudson Record Sports Editor
When his face pops up on your TV screen on Saturdays, you’re likely either cheering or cursing. But chances are, if you watch SEC football, you’re pretty familiar with Hubert Owens. The SEC referee dropped by Jake’s in Alexander City on Monday as the keynote speaker for the East Central Alabama Football Officials Association. The association, which is made up of 40 officials who referee sports in Coosa, Talladega and Tallapoosa counties, hosted Owens as the speaker of their year-end banquet, as he spoke about the evolution of the game and why officials do the job they do. “Why do we officiate? Why do we get involved in this occupation? The first thing is probably because you love the game,” Owens said. “At some point in time in all of our lives, we’ve either played football, been around people who’ve played football, our parents have played football … we love the game of football or whatever sport you officiate. That’s why we do it because we love the game and we want to be a part of it. It gives us a sense of pride and something to look forward to when our playing days are over. You can still be a part of a great game.” Owens said officiating is also a good way to give back to the community and the youth. “It’s a way to give back to the communities, it’s a way to give back to the players on the field,” Owens said. “If you’ve ever played, someone officiated your games and you realize the game cannot be a special game unless you have good officials. That’s another reason that we officiate. We support our youth in the community. “There’s a different dialog of the field. You can reach some kids in a way that you might not be able to reach them when you see them out at a restaurant. You have that common bond.” While many would likely think that having thousands of volunteer officials in the stands yelling at you each game day for a call they did not like was tough, Owens quipped that the toughest part was Monday’s small-group setting. “Believe it or not, when you see us on TV making all of these announcements and so forth, that’s the easy part,” Owens

said. “The hard part for me is being in a group like this when all eyes are on you. This is tough. Bryant-Denny Stadium in front of 104,000, that’s easy.” One of the areas Owens highlighted on Monday was the way football is changing and how officials are adapting. With new rules emphasizing safety and more spread offenses on the field, one of the key effects has been more officials on the field of play. “The game is changing and it’s ever evolving. Most of you remember the old term ‘three yards and a cloud of dust.’ When football was like that, there were four officials,” Owens said. “Then we started to move to the passing game … they started to open it up a bit. It moved from four officials to five and six officials. Then we got to the point with spread
offenses, all of the complicated defensive fronts and schemes and we’re now in the era where we have eight officials.” However, Owens said the new rules and changes that emphasize safety, as well as more diverse officials on the field are for the better in preserving the game. “The game is changing. Of course now the NFL and various associations have female officials, which was unheard of 25 years ago,” Owens said. “But it’s evolving and we have to change with it. The changes are for the better, I think. “The changes are in order to preserve the game.” One of the biggest challenges of being an official, Owens said, is making meaningful calls. He said officials never want to make a call that changes the outcome
of a game, but that they always look to make the calls that have a direct effect on each play. “If you try to be a rule book official, you won’t go very far. You have to know when to apply the rules,” Owens said. “I hear it all the time, ‘they’re holding ref, every time.’ You’re right. They’re probably out there holding every down and you could call holding every play. But what separates the good officials from the mediocre ones is the ability to call that hold when it really matters, when it’s significant and when it has an impact and an effect on the play. They did hold over there, but did it have an impact on what’s happening over here where the ball is? Those are the type of things we work on as officials to get better.”

Hanna Elsho stands outside her solar-powered bike that she is using to travel across the country to raise awareness for Lions clubs as well as to thank Americans’ for saving her life when she was a child in Germany. The 73-year-old Elsho has been on the road since May 1 and stopped in Alexander City Sunday night, went through Dadeville on Monday on her two-year journey. Right, she makes her way across the River Bridge on Highway 280.
THANK YOU TOUR By Jessica Sneed and Mitch Sneed
A German-born immigrant is on a two-year bike ride to say thank you to the American people and raise awareness for the Toastmasters and the Lions clubs of America. Sunday, Alexander City became the latest city to welcome 73-year-old Hanna Elshoff as she makes her incredible journey. Elshoff left Chatfield, Minnesota on May 1 and has ridden more than 1,500 miles in her solar-powerassisted bicycle. “People ask me why I’m doing this and it’s just really a way to say thank you, Elshoff said Sunday. “I was born in Northern Germany in 1942 during the war and the Nazis had orders to load me and my family on a truck, but when the Nazi officers were just about to follow their orders
American soldiers came and the war ended. “So America saved my life. The Toastmasters saved my soul and the Lions gave me a purpose. That’s what all this is about. Elshoff said her ride is planned for two years, covering most of the eastern United States. Sunday she made her way from Sylacauga to Alexander City and had hoped to make it to Dadeville, but instead spent the night in the Quality Inn here in town and was back on the road Monday morning. “I think I’m headed to Auburn or Opelika, I guess it is, Elshoff said. “That’s the beauty of this, I really don’t have any schedule or any deadline. I just kind of ride by the seat of my pants, I guess you could say. But all the people have been so kind. This is a great town. “But all along the way it has been the same way.
People have been so nice. It has reinforced that same sense of thankfulness because the people have been so good to me. It’s the same no matter where I go. She created a stir in town, as she rolled in and made several stops before settling in. When you hear bike, Elshoff’s ride isn’t the traditional two-wheeler. The bike that had onlookers in awe is known as an ELF, which stands for “Electric Light and Fun. It uses a combination of pedal and solar power to propel the craft down the road. Elshoff said her mission to say thank you started in 1999 when she wrote a letter to the editor of the Post-Bulletin in Rochester, Minnesota. She thanked all the World War II veterans for saving her life. She said that became a recurring theme and eventually led her to embark on this journey.

The Dadeville Record
If Hubbard survives trial, still tough road to governor with all of the negative publicity
L
ast week I gave you an alphabetical list of the 18 potential horses in the 2018 Alabama Gubernatorial Derby. We will begin this week handicapping them in descending order. The Number 18 horse is current Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard. We will know whether the beleaguered Speaker of the House will remain in the derby by next March. He is on trial in Lee County. A grand jury indicted him over a year ago on 23 felony counts of ethics law violations. If he is convicted on any of the 23 charges, he becomes a felon and will not only be removed from my 2018 Alabama Derby, he will be removed from the House of Representatives and as Speaker of the House. If Hubbard survives prosecution, he will definitely be in the Governor’s Race and he will be in with a vengeance. His followers assume that he will be the beneficiary of a tremendous sympathy vote. He will have the benefit of being able to raise a large amount of campaign dough by virtue of being Speaker of the House. This has been his most advantageous attribute all along and his fundraising ability will remain intact and might even be enhanced. However, Hubbard’s
STEVE FLOWERS Columnist
name identification has been badly damaged. Even if he survives the trial, having been the subject of very negative publicity for nearly two years will be difficult to overcome. Regardless, if found innocent, Hubbard will most likely run for governor. He will remain on my list of viable gubernatorial candidates and probably move up significantly from Number 18. However, he will not make the top 10. The Number 17 horse is Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jim Main. Under Alabama law, a judge cannot seek election after they turn 70. Therefore, Main will be age limited from seeking reelection to the Court in 2018, but he is a young looking 70-ish fellow and not ready to go to the house. Judge Main has been around Alabama politics all of his life. He grew up in Union Springs, went to Auburn and became a pharmacist like his father. He then went to law school and became a lawyer. He practiced law in Anniston for 20 years, then moved to Montgomery to practice law with Jere Beasley.
In the late 90’s, Main was Gov. Fob James Chief of Staff and legal advisor. Main then became a major player in Bob Riley’s administration as State Finance Director. He was appointed to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in 2009, and later to the Supreme Court. He won a full term in 2012. The Number 16 horse is Greg Reed, a young promising State Senator. Reed came to the Senate with the GOP takeover in 2010. He is a Jasper attorney and very popular in his home district. Most political observers predict a bright future for Reed. He is plain spoken and his word is good. People trust him. That is why he has already risen to the rank of Majority Leader in the Senate. However, in all reality, Reed will probably not be a candidate for governor. Some would assume that he might run for lieutenant governor and he could be a viable candidate for that post but it is going to be a crowded
field. My guess is that Sen. Reed remains in the State Senate and becomes President Pro Tem of the Senate. The three GOP leaders ahead of him probably will not return to the upper chamber. Jabo Wagoner is expected to retire and Arthur Orr and Del Marsh more than likely will run for statewide office. Today, being President Pro Tem of the Senate is a lot more powerful than lieutenant governor, which is nothing more than a ceremonial position. The Number 15 horse is State Senator Arthur Orr of Decatur. Senator Orr is Chairman of the Senate Finance and Taxation Committee. That position allows him to raise lots of campaign money, which he has already done. He was unopposed in his last race and stockpiled a lot of money. He is handsome and marketable for television. My belief is that Sen. Orr starts out running for governor, but drops back to the lieutenant governor’s race. The Number 14
horse is Anniston Mayor Vaughn Stewart, a fourth generation Annistonian. Stewart wants to run for governor and some folks in Calhoun County say he has been running for governor all his life. He is a former University of Alabama SGA president and a lawyer by profession. It will be interesting to see if he pulls the trigger. We will continue
analyzing the potential horses in the 2018 Alabama Derby next week. See you next week. Steve Flowers is Alabama’s leading political columnist. His weekly column appears in over 60 Alabama newspapers. He served 16 years in the state legislature. Steve may be reached at www.steveflowers.us.

If you have a store bought turkey, let it thaw out for at least an hour or so. Preheat the oven to 500 degree, too. 2. After the turkey has thawed, put any sauces or spices that you need to on there. You many want to put some butter on there or put stuffing in it too. 3, After the oven has preheated, put the turkey in a pan with a tall lip. 4. Put the turkey in the oven. Let it cook for 3-4 hours.
5. Take it out an hour or at least 30 minutes before it is done. Take a knife and make a small cut into the turkey. If it doesn’t look done enough, put in the oven again for however long you desire. 6. Take it out, put a litter pepper or something on it, and you have a turkey.
