When was the last time you felt your community needed you? I will not attempt to posit and answer. To be completely honest, I do not have one to posit. Whatever your answer, I do know one thing for certain. Your community needs you.

Mr. Rogers taught that the response of God to crisis is seen in the helpers. Whenever disaster or tragedy strikes, anyone wondering where God is in the midst of it needs only to look to the helpers. There you will find the image and presence of God.

This understanding should be all anyone needs to possess in order to be a helper. If we ever wonder if we should offer help to someone else, we can think on this teaching and have our answer. Are we our brother’s keeper? God’s answer is always yes.

As another election season rolls around, perhaps voters should be assessing candidates’ understanding of community above anything else. Are we looking for elected officials interested in nurturing community or in fostering division? I don’t know about you, but that fundamental question influences everything else.
