The votes are in, and this week’s Herald Fans’ Choice Player of the Week is Wetumpka quarterback Nate Rogers.
Rogers earned 348 of the 585 total votes cast. He beat out Elmore County wide receiver Garrett Allen, who had 193 total votes. Edgewood Academy’s Gabe LeMaster earned 44 total votes this week.
Rogers, like he has done over and over again this season, shined in the Indians’ homecoming win over Greenville. In the 42-21 win last week, Rogers accumulated three touchdowns and over 100 yards both through the air and on the ground.
He completed 7 of his 16 pass attempts for 150 passing yards and a touchdown, and he rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns to complete his game.
This season, Martin is third on the team with 74 rushing yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. He is averaging 3.7 yards per carry and his longest run is nine yards.
He has also been effective in the passing game as he has recorded six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. He is seventh on the team in receptions.
Martin has helped lead Jackson State to a 4-0 record this season. The Tigers are 1-0 in conference play and they have been blowing out their opponents.
His performance helped the Indians move to 5-1 with the win against Greenville on Sept. 22.
He continued his play for another week and led his Indians to a win over Stanhope Elmore on Friday, Sept. 29. Wetumpka is now 6-1 and has already earned more wins this year than they did all of last season.
Against Stanhope Elmore, Rogers threw a touchdown pass and caught a touchdown pass on a trick play. The Indians turn their sights to a matchup with Carver Montgomery this weekend.
