TOURISM IN TALLINN March 2009

Among primary markets, British tourists stay the longest (2.48 nights), and Latvians spent the shortest time (1.40 nights).

In March 2009, 125,000 tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments, 50% of whom stayed in Tallinn.

Shorter length of stay among tourists in Tallinn The average length of stay for tourists in March was 1.67 nights (-9%).

71% of foreign tourists stay in Tallinn for leisure purposes, 21% for business, 4% for attending a conference and 1% for other purposes. 57% of domestic tourists visit for leisure purposes, 33% for business, 9% for attending conferences and 3% for other purposes.

Room occupancy rates and price of bednights ** decreased In March 413 accommodation establishments offered accommodation services for tourists; 7 173 rooms and 14 441 beds were available for guests. The room occupancy rate was 30%, 12% lower than in March of the previous year. The average cost of a bednight in an accommodation establishment was 538 kroons, which is 6 kroons less expensive compared to March 2008.

Decline in passengers in air and sea travel The number of passengers at Tallinn Airport was 113 627, down 25% compared with March the year before. The number of passengers passing through the Port of Tallinn totaled 477 894, down by 4% compared with March last year. Tourists staying in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments During the period from January to March 2009, a total of 180,800 tourists stayed in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments (13% less tourists compared with same period in 2008). Altogether a total of 150,900 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments (-9% or 15,800 tourists). The number of domestic tourists decreased somewhat, numbers accommodated fell 28%, by 11,500 tourists, for a total of 29,900. (-9%) Bednights spent by tourists also shrank during the first quarter, with a total of 320,600 bednights (-17%) spent in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments. While bednights by foreign tourists shrank by 13% (totalling 274,000 bednights), bednights by Estonian residents were down by 35% (total 46,000 bednights). During the first quarter of 2009 the average length of stay for tourists in Tallinn was 1.77 nights (-4%).The average trip length among foreign tourists shortened by 4%, from 1.89 to 1.82 nights. The length of stay for domestic tourists decreased even more, from 1.68 to 1.55 nights, or 10%.

Tourists from Tallinn’s primary target markets (Finland, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Russia and Latvia) make up 85% of all foreign tourists in the first quarter 2009.
