Off campus If you are looking for privately rented accommodation in Tallinn, you have plenty of options depending upon your needs. Property search portals: • www.city24.ee • www.kv.ee If you have any questions regarding private rooms and apartments for rent, feel free to contact Ms Margit Joa of Pindi Real Estate via email at margit.joa@pindi.ee NB: Apartment prices depend upon the location and the number of rooms. Utilities are usually not included in monthly rental prices and, depending upon the building, can vary greatly. We advise you to ask in advance about the variable cost of utilities. Tenants can also ask to see bills from previous years so that they can estimate the monthly overall costs. One of the biggest expenses is usually heating during the winter period. Settling in: Information for EU students

Students living in TTÜ dormitories: you should make sure that you get a copy of your rental agreement from the dormitory office. This document is important, as it shows a place of residence in Estonia. Take this agreement, along with your passport or other identification document, to the City District Government Office.

Registering your place of stay in the Population Register

Students with private accommodation: when renting apartments in Tallinn, you should take along your passport or another identification document as well as your rental agreement.

Applying for an Estonian ID card Based on EU regulations (the Citizen of the European Union Act, § 14: Application for an Estonian identity card), international students coming from the EU (including from EEA countries and Switzerland) must obtain the right of temporary residence in Estonia. An EU citizen must, within a period of one month from the registration of their place of residence, personally contact the Citizenship and Migration Bureau to apply for an Estonian ID card which certifies their right of temporary residence in Estonia. Besides being one of the requirements for residing in Estonia, the ID card gives you certain advantages such as, for example, being the only identity document to be accepted on the internet. The ID card enables you to get great discounts when using public transportation, it allows you to apply for scholarships, and you can use internet banking, book cinema tickets, use e-libraries, and also printing services at TTÜ. If you have lost your ID card or if you experience any problems in using e-services, please call the ID card helpline on 1777 or (+372) 677 3377 (when calling from abroad).

Medical insurance According to European regulations, medical insurance which is purchased in one of the EU countries is valid within the whole European Union area. However, in order to be able to use medical services abroad, EU citizens should hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which is issued in the country which forms the individual’s permanent place residence, ie their home country. As a holder of the European Health Insurance Card you have the same right for the provision of medical services in Estonia as do all Estonian citizens. For more information about doctor visits, legislation, and the Estonian health care system please visit the Estonian Health Insurance Fund website: www.haigekassa.ee/en If you are not a holder of a European Health Insurance Card, any Estonian health care institution has the right to charge you for the provision of services. In this case a refund can be made once you turn to the health care fund in your home country. However, the same procedure of making an appointment before visiting a doctor applies for holders of the European Health Insurance Card.

Settling in: information for non-EU students

Medical insurance contract

Applying for a temporary residence permit (TRP) for studying

If you are coming from a non-EU country you should follow the requirements of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board and obtain a medical insurance policy in Estonia for the same validity period as your temporary residence permit.

The temporary residence permit card (the TRP card) is an electronic document which contains your fingerprints and which states that an international student (a non-EU citizen) has been issued with a temporary residence permit for the purpose of carrying out their studies in Estonia. A TRP is issued for a period of validity which lasts until the end of the nominal study period, and for no longer than the estimated duration of one’s studies (three years if you are on a bachelor’s course, or two years for a master’s). You can apply for a TRP at a Citizenship and Migration Bureau Office. The closest one to the Tallinn University of Technology is Tammsaare Service Point (A H Tammsaare tee 47). Public transport: buses No 36 or 45 from the ‘Tehnikaülikool’ stop to the ‘Järve’ station stop (in the Viru direction). To apply for a TRP, you are required to make a reservation in advance. Your reservation can be done by phone (612 3000) or online (broneering.politsei.ee). This electronic document also gives you certain advantages. It is the only document that is accepted on the internet: you can get great discounts on the use of public transportation, it allows you to use online banking services, and to log-in to the ÕIS (the Study Info System), apply for scholarships, book cinema tickets, or use e-libraries. The residence permit card does not function as a travel document: whenever you travel, do not forget to take your passport with you. Migration advisors Migration advisors at the Police and Border Guard Board will help you to understand the legal details in relation to your temporary residence permit for studies, temporary residence permit for work, long-term residence permit, etc. Consultation is provided via phone, email, Skype call, or by appointment. Phone: (+372) 612 3500 (Mon-Fri 09:00-15.00) Email: migrationadvice@politsei.ee Skype: EstonianPolice_MigrationAdvice

Arrange your obligatory medical insurance contract within two months of your arrival in Estonia. Your medical insurance must be available during the full validity period of your residence permit and the insurance coverage for an insurance period of one year must be a minimum of 6,000 euros. If you have any questions regarding insurance matters, feel free to contact: KindlustusEst via email at info@kindlustusest.ee or visit them in person at Mustamäe tee 55, Second Floor, 10621 Tallinn.

Registering your place of stay in the Population Register After moving to a new residential address, everyone is obliged to submit their residence details to the Population Register so that their place of residence is officially registered. In order to enter these details, each individual must submit a written residential notice to the responsible local authority department, this being the Tallinn City District Government Office. There are nine city district government offices in Tallinn, and any one of them can be used to register one’s place of residence. Useful information about living in Estonia How to obtain your public transport card

How to get to TTÜ You can reach TTÜ from various parts of Tallinn by using trolleybuses Nos 3 and 4, or buses Nos 10, 11, 23, 27, 33, and 36. From the airport to Tallinn city centre - bus No 2 takes you directly to Tallinn city centre. From Tallinn city centre the easiest way to TTÜ is via trolleybus No 3 or bus No 36. To TTÜ campus by trolley Take trolleybus No 3 from the ‘KAUBAMAJA’ stop just next to the Viru shopping centre. Get off at the ‘KEEMIA’ stop which is about twenty-five minutes from the city centre. The TTÜ campus is located just next to this trolleybus stop. To TTÜ campus by bus Take bus No 36 from the ‘VIRU’ bus stop near the beginning of Viru street in the city centre. After about twenty-five minutes, get off at the ‘TEHNIKAÜLIKOOL’ stop. This is located just in front of the TTÜ main building.

Everyone in Tallinn who has registered their residential address (students with a valid TRP card and EU citizens) can use public transport for free with the Public Transport Card. Anyone who has not registered their residential address in Tallinn or who is not a Tallinn resident (student with visas from third-party countries and EU students, or anyone who has not yet received their ID card), cannot make use of the discounts for Tallinn residents and will have to buy credit for the card system from authorised sellers (R-kiosks, the Post Office in the TTÜ SOCbuilding foyer, etc). After buying your card for two euros you will have to activate your card and add your personal details to it. If you are eligible for any discounts, you must personalise your Public Transport Card in order to be able to make use of those discounts. Personalising cards is free, so either do it online (www.pilet.ee), at the public service office (Vabaduse väljak 7), or at other Tallinn City Government sales points. Elsewhere the service costs €1. Personalised e-tickets are only valid with proof of identity (an Estonian ID card or TRP card). The Public Transport Card can also be replaced by another contact-free card (eg. a student card) which meets the RFID technology standard. Validate your journey with the Public Transport Card immediately after entering a public transport vehicle. Electronic validators are located alongside every door in all public transportation vehicles.

More information about public transport timetables is available at: www.soiduplaan.tallinn.ee By taxi Always check the prices first, which should be posted on the taxi’s right-hand rear window. These consist of a base fare which is usually between €2.20 and €3.20 plus two separate per-kilometre rates (one for the daytime, one for the night), which should normally be around €0.40 and €0.96. When in doubt, you can ask the driver about the approximate price to your destination before you get in. Ordering a taxi by phone is always the best strategy, as you’ll avoid the dishonest taxis that prey on tourists. A list of taxi companies along with their daytime base fares and per-kilometre rates is available at www.taksod.net. Mobile apps, Taxify and Uber, are widely used as an easy and affordable option to order taxis.

Public and national holidays in Estonia Public holidays (days of rest) 1 January - New Year’s Day 24 February - Independence Day (1918), the anniversary of the declaration which acted as the founding of the republic of Estonia. After this declaration was made, Estonia was forced to fight a war of independence against Soviet Russia in the east and Baltic-German forces in the south. During this war Estonia secured its borders and concluded the Tartu Peace Treaty with Soviet Russia on 2 February 1920. First Sunday after the first full moon of spring - Easter Sunday Two days before Easter Sunday - Good Friday 1 May - Spring Day Seventh Sunday after Easter Sunday - Pentecost 23 June - Victory Day, which commemorates the victory of Estonian forces over those of the Baltic Germans (led by the Landswehr) at the Battle of Võnnu (Cesis) in northern Latvia in 1919, during which Estonian forces thwarted an attempt to restore Baltic-German control over the region. This day is marked by important official ceremonies. 24 June - St John’s Day or Midsummer’s Day and its equally important Midsummer’s Eve is a traditional celebration which is held on the night of 23 June. This day is the closest to the longest day of the year, when twilight and dawn appear to merge. The evening of the 23rd and well into the morning of the 24th is celebrated with bonfires and a traditional celebratory menu. 20 August - Restoration of Independence Day. Dramatic developments in the Soviet Union in August 1991 resulted in the three Baltic countries finally regaining their independence. The Estonian national tricolour flag was torn from the flag pole on Tallinn’s Pikk Hermann Tower and was replaced by the symbol of the new occupation, the Soviet banner. 2 November - All Souls’ Day Second Sunday of November - Fathers’ Day 16 November - Declaration of Sovereignty Day. On 16 November 1988, the Supreme Soviet of the Estonian SSR adopted a declaration of national sovereignty under which Estonian laws should take precedence over Soviet Union ones.

Academic year and terms - an academic year consists of two terms (autumn and spring terms). Both terms are sixteen weeks long, and at the end of each term, there is a three-week exam session. If required, there is an extra week during which additional examinations can be held. ECTS - The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a standard for comparing the study attainment and performance of students of higher education across the European Union and other collaborating European countries. One ECTS credit corresponds to 26 hours of study by a student. Student code - at TTÜ you need a unique student code, one which identifies the student. You will get your student code from your designated dean’s office. To access ÕIS (the Study Info System) there are two options. The first option is with your TRP/ID card. If you have not yet received it, you may also access ÕIS with a username and password. In order to receive these, first get your student code from the dean’s office and bring it to the IT department in SOC 132. Please note that you also need to show a form of ID. You will need your student code to enter onto on all applications, tests, and other papers which you are handed while at the university.

Study Information System – ÕIS

Study plan for degree students

ÕIS is the web-based study information system for TTÜ in which you can: • register for courses and exams • see course timetables • submit applications (for scholarships, a thesis, etc) • provide feedback and receive your study results

Students must arrange a list of courses for the term from their required subjects (compulsory courses) and optional subjects (elective courses), with the available courses depending upon their faculty.

Students are responsible for keeping their personal information properly updated (email address, phone number, place of residence in Estonia) via ÕIS. To find out how it works, refer here: www.ois2.ttu.ee and click on the ‘help’ button. The deadline for submitting your individual ‘Study Plan’ is announced each year in the academic calendar. You may register for courses until the deadline is reached for submitting a final study plan, which is also listed in the calendar. Please note that the deadlines for submitting a study plan vary in different schools. You can find the list of courses which are available in English and also the timetables at: ois2.ttu.ee>ENG>Timetables> and click on the English flag. Please take notice of the study weeks: the first week of each term is always week number one; therefore the term starts on an odd number, with the second week being an even number. Some lectures may take place every odd week, and others every even week. Some subjects are taught during the first half of the term - these subjects are marked S1 (autumn) or K1 (spring) - or during the second half of the term, marked S2 and K2 respectively.

Free choice studies Each curriculum in the university includes a free-choice study module in which the student can choose any courses that they prefer. Courses held by other Estonian universities can also be chosen. Students on free tuition programmes may choose as many subjects as they want. Please note that the majority of the courses are taught in Estonian, so please consult your dean’s office before you register for any courses.

Study plan for exchange students Exchange students should make out their study plans themselves. Study plans are available at: ois2.ttu.ee>ENG>Timetables> and then click on the English flag after which you will be able to find the codes for the international programmes. You may choose from all of the programmes that are taught in English. Click each code under the course’s faculty. Please note that during the two first weeks of the term the timetables may change. When you take courses from different schools and programmes, make sure that the course times do not overlap. If you are using the search button to look up courses, it will display all courses, including those in Estonian. Language courses and sports-related course are not listed in the timetables - these schedules will be forwarded to you by the Mobility Centre. After you have received your ÕIS access from the IT Department in Room SOC-132, you can create your personal timetable (Timetables>Personal timetable). You do not need an ÕIS password to be able to check the timetables. Important information about grading Some lectures, seminars, and laboratory exercises are evaluated as ‘pass’ or ‘fail’. These include Estonian Language and Culture, language courses, and Physical Education (sports). If your university does not accept this grading system, it is advisable for you to avoid taking these courses. Orange - only applicable to degree students Blue - only applicable to exchange students

Registering for Physical Education (sports) Physical Education (PE) belongs to the free study module. In order to enrol for PE classes, you must register via ÕIS. The step-by-step tutorial on how to enrol is available on our website, which you can find here: www.ttu.ee/in-english-8

TTÜ also has bilateral agreements in place with several universities in Asia and North America. These students can apply for scholarships from their destination countries, universities, and private foundations.

Enrolment takes place during the first two weeks of every term.

Do not miss out on your chance. Studying abroad will change your life! Please take time to view more information which is available here: www.ttu.ee/studyabroad and www.ttu.ee/internship

Students who don’t pay a tuition fee can enrol in two terms of PE courses free of charge. After that a small fee is applied. For fee-paying students, a fee for courses is applicable.

Scholarships

You can choose between: • badminton • basketball • volleyball • table tennis • gym • aerobics • additional sports will be added during the year - keep yourself up-to-date by following our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ttusport/

TTÜ students with a good academic performance have the option to apply for scholarships. More information can be found here: www.ttu.ee/scholarships Students can apply twice a year for a scholarship - in autumn and in spring. Since the most important factor in applying for a scholarship is the student’s grade point average, students who have just begun the first term of their studies cannot apply. Scholarships are also awarded by the TTÜ Student Union. The purpose of the student council scholarships is to reward entrepreneurship and study motivation, and to provide support to students who have special needs (disabilities) or a difficult socio-economic situation.

Students who are training on their own can reach an agreement with a coach to earn three ECTS without attending PE classes. Contact the TTÜ sports club director, Rait Käbin, to sort this out: rait.kabin@ttu.ee If you have any questions then please contact us at: sport@ttu.ee

Exchange studies abroad All students at TTÜ have the opportunity to enhance their studies by spending at least one term in one of the many TTÜ partner universities. Exchange studies at those universities which are located in EU member states are funded by the Erasmus+ programme. With the Erasmus+ programme, students may go abroad for periods between two and twelve months. The same student may be applicable for grants to study abroad for a total of twelve months maximum per study cycle. You can also carry out your internship in EU member states.

Student life The Student Union at Tallinn University of Technology TTÜ’s Student Union (SU) is an organisation which represents students and student groups inside and outside the university. The SU has the role of a creator and promoter of opportunities at the university. In general, the best and most supportive learning environment for students is created in the form of their own organisations. In doing so, the most important values of the organisation are upheld - democracy and solidarity. The SU supports groups with knowledge and financial resources. Negotiations are held with various university departments, and student organisations are aided in finding rooms and other relevant facilities. The SU also coordinates more general processes that take place in the student body, but only for groups which represent students. Year-by-year, the function of the SU in overseeing other student groups has become more pronounced, and event coordination at the university, for example, has been left for the most part to other specialised organisations. Be sure to contact us under the following circumstances: • if you feel that your rights as a student have been abused or your opportunities deliberately limited and you feel that the problem is too great for you to be able to solve on your own; • if you wish to make recommendations and suggest ideas about how to improve the support and administrative systems at the university; • if you wish to promote student life and thereby build up valuable experience, knowledge, and acquaintances for life. Faculty student councils

Student life events

Every faculty or college at TTÜ has its own student council. Student councils stand up for the well-being of the students in their faculty, as well as keeping them informed and ensuring that each year is memorable. They are in active contact with the dean’s offices and they organise events for the students.

The ‘International Dinner’ is an event to which both international and local students are welcome. The ‘International Night’ is a mixture of various nations, cultures, and cuisines. The evening stars are usually the TTÜ’s international students, who introduce their culture and cuisines to their guests. The evening ends with a big international party! Everyone is welcome to attend, to acquaint themselves with various traditions, and to taste food in the TTÜ Student House.

TTÜ Student House TTÜ students do not need to go to the city centre in search of fun. Instead they can find it in the TTÜ Student House! The student house is unique in Estonia and in fact across the entirety of the Baltics. While it is mainly a place in which to relax and take a break from studying, it is also home to active student organisations, providing them with a space to collaborate and develop together. You’ll find culture and entertainment here all of the time! During the day, the student house is meant to be used as a place in which you can spend your free time. However, there are a good many evenings in which it transforms itself into a top-level club, where students gather to dance and have fun. Events vary a lot but there is something happening for every taste. The student house is a good place in which to rent rooms for various occasions. Our rooms are meant to be used for organising conferences, workshops, parties, or gatherings, or for studying or group work. You’ll find a student café here, plus a large and a small hall, small conference rooms, and student organisation offices, plus a pool table and board games.

The Opening Bash is a strictly voluntary continuation of the Opening Bash Orientation. It is a grandiose party which marks the beginning of the academic year. This party knows no limits - almost 1,000 freshmen and students have a blast together! It is a celebration to remember until you reach your graduation day. The party takes place in the TTÜ Student House, where you can listen to a famous Estonian performer who lights up the party! The Student Body Birthday is a day upon which student life once again becomes a year older. No birthday passes without a proper celebration and this one is celebrated with a great annual party taking place in the underground car park, attracting around 2,000 students. All true TTÜ students, student-minded professors, graduates, and students from other universities will be there! TTÜ Student March to Toompea - the republic of Estonia celebrates its anniversary on 24 February. Students have always celebrated the birthday of their homeland. It has become a tradition that people go up to Toompea to see the flag raising ceremony at sunrise. Even when the weather is a rather chilly -25 degrees Celsius outside, students will be there. TTÜ students who share the same tradition will march to Toompea with flags in their hands while they sing songs all the way. Later, TTÜ students will gather in one pub in the Old Town, where they will continue to celebrate the anniversary. Student Summer Games - an athletic entertainment event which can be attended by students from all universities and colleges. The Student Summer Games traditionally takes place at Kääriku Leisure and Sports Centre. Around 1,700 students show up to have fun and enjoy the sun. The Student Summer Games offers participants the chance to take part in several sports, ranging from volleyball to swimming, and Lake Kääriku activities such as the belly-flop contest and women’s mud wrestling.

TTÜ Cheerleaders and Salto Boys -perform at games which involve the university’s sports teams, and at company parties and fashion shows, in clubs, and at other special events. Training for cheerleaders takes place between three and five times a week. They dance and perform acrobatics, and use as many different styles as possible: hip-hop, jazz, show dance, and various acrobatic elements, and also cheerleading of course. Since there are a number of dancers with different backgrounds, each one of them brings something new and interesting to the group. The focus is on lifts and acrobatics. Tallinn University of Technology symbols

Student Union website - information concerning the university and help from the Student Union.

Tallinn University of Technology (founded in 1918) is one of the oldest universities in Estonia. Over the course of nearly a century, TTÜ has developed certain characteristics that symbolise our university.

Student Life website - information concerning organisations and student life. Studioosus - the TTÜ student magazine is released once a month so that it can broadcast various subjects such as events, education, debates, etc: www.ttu.ee/studioosus. Tipikas TV - a video portal for TTÜ students. You can upload your own videos or just keep yourself tuned into student life via podcasts: www.tipikas.tv. Mailing lists - every student at TTÜ is part of a mailing list. This is a great way of providing information to the TTÜ student body. Subscribe to our newsletter at: www.ttu.ee/students/newsletter. Weekly newsletter - this is sent out to students via email every Monday by the Student Union. Newsletters serve to inform students about what will be going on during the week: events, debates, trips, etc: www.ttu.ee/nadalakiri. LCD Screens - positioned all around in the campus and carrying everyday information about what is going on in the university. Poster panels - covering various events and happenings. Juulius Tipikas Facebook page - up-to-date information about different events, projects, internships, etc: www.facebook.com/Tipikas. Instagram channel (@juulius_tipikas) - pictures of students’ day-to-day life.

The TTÜ visual identity is based on three colours: • cherry red - which represents buoyancy, active people, and a vibrant student life • steel grey - which symbolises the steely persistence of our students’ spirit and the die-hard nature of knowledge acquisition at the university • white - a symbol of peace, progress, and higher morals; this balances the combination of steel grey and cherry red Tekkel - a college cap with a steel grey bottom, a white welt, and cherry red prink. You can always recognise a real TTÜ student by their college cap. The traditional TTÜ college cap symbolises unity, high authority, and a will to act. Juulius - the mascot of TTÜ, the eternal student. If you are interested in purchasing TTÜ merchandise, please visit the shop in Room U03-104 or via www. ttu.ee/pood. Rings and college caps can also be purchased at the Student Union Office (U01-217).
