Cladding Development The cladding systems designed for this proposal were created to allow maximum lighting and minimal energy use. There is a use of mixed materials. Glazing is used to its minimum along the east and west facade in some versions concrete is replaced by metal panels to provide aesthetical qualities and to suggest structure. Core Development The formal qualities of this massing made it difficult to accomodate a single service core. instead it had to be split into to flanking structures of the massing. this allowed for an even distribution of services since the middle structure creates the connection between two flanks. Analysis & Discussion Due to the slanted roofs and the extra service core in this massing proposal the cost of running it would be exponentially more expensive than the other proposals. Despite the costs the proposal provides a more dynamic and aestetically pleasing form that can be further manipulated and explored to create a more undifined building. The way the roofs slant in different directions can be a good starting point for winter and summer lighting.

Preliminary Design Energy Analysis

We selected this proposal because its future potential due to its formal qualities. We also chose this massing because the way it allows lighting in and how the program is accomodated. It is not the most cost effective but be believe there are ways that we can reduce costs.

Structural System and Construction Type

Structural_Wall Section Shade Device

For our project we decided to go with steel structure, so that less space is taken up. A Joist system is being used to have fewer columns. The Joist spans a max distance of 40 feet with a depth of 2 feet. The Structural steel beams we use span a max distance of 12 feet 6 inches with a depth of 6 inches. We use Struc tural steel tube columns which are 4 x 4 inches 12 feet tall. The precast concrete slab is a solid flat slab, with a span of no more than 12 feet the slab only needs to be 4 inches thick. We decided with a thicker slab to be able to support more weight. Structural steel beams - Span of 12’ 6”, depth 6” Open-web steel joists - Span 40’, depth 24” Precast concrete slabs – solid flat slab - Span 12’6”, depth 10”

Fire Escape -There are two fire escapes located at the base of each two hour fire-resistance rated enclosed stairwell, and one hour fire rated doors. Fire Extinguishers -Dry Standpipes are located in each stair well along with a hose cabinet on each floor. -All structural members will be equipped with a two hour fire rating.
