hyper americana
5
A key concept for Ss18 will be Hyper-Americana. This trend reflects on our retrospective perspective of the 50’s and 60’s, but also parodies the intense patriotic spirit practiced which has framed postwar America and has extended to the present. As the results of the most recent presidential election play out, we are reminded that Americans have deep worries about the future which manifest in sometimes unflattering ways. This trend is very topical as Americans reconcile anxieties they have and are nostalgic for a yearned-for past.
6
The
over-saturated
and neon tones which are used against each other are both visually exciting and exhausting. At first glance the story being told is jovial and alluring but
after
further
inspection there is an underlying layer of aggression and sorrow.

There are two key colour palettes to consider when approaching this trend: the first focuses on a dusty yet farmiliar collaboration of tones: The three colours that stand out mingle as a ballad of ostentatiousness that can also come across as saccharine. Nevertheless, the colours can both captivate the audience and draw attention to the apparel.
9
10
The second concentrates more on the ‘hyper’ ascpect taking inspiration from the west coast and to a time that played ignorance to some of the darker issues that were apparent. The vivid imagery is bright enough that it almost seems to display the motions of an animation. However, these same colours can come across as not only cartoonish, but also vulgar and even possibly perverted.
11
One of the key themes in this trend focuses on the femininity, sexuality and struggles that go hand in hand with what it means to be a woman in America. Simultaneously representing her as both the wholesome housewife and the tempting whore, These colours are eye-watering yet farmiliarly sombre as when combined with each other so aggressively produce an adorable yet tacky result.

As I reflect on this project I am able to come to terms with what I have learnt and it has given me some well needed perspective as to my own personal taste but also my ability to work under pressure and produce what I feel is something I am incredibly proud of. Firstly I must mention that the amount of work I put into this project is possibly more than I have ever done before. I have pushed myself to the point where I believe I have creates something that I did not previously believe I was capable of. That’s not to say that this project was without difficulty. I found when starting this project I had so much research but little guide as to layout and expectations for what the final pack should look like and so when presented with such a huge culmination of product I felt overwhelmed as to what would actually go into the pack. It came to the point where I used very little of what was in my pack and instead looked externally for other images that I felt were more relevant. If I were able to put this together again I would tell myself to do the designs and produce the relating cad imagery much sooner as this was what took up a lot of my time towards the end. Secondly I struggled particularly with layout and if I am honest am not still 100% sure if this is what it should look like. I myself personally love the presentation of it but it’s not clear if it’s correct in terms of what it should look like or what my peers could consider a successful trend package.
37
reflection I feel as though my themes are clear but might be construed as too broad especially as I included two palettes for the fist trend. However I did not want to remove either one as I thought they were essential towards proving or supporting my trend. I therefore stand by my decision as I feel it would look incomplete without one or the other. One aspect that I am very proud of myself for doing was that the majority of the patterns used in my package, I created myself on illustrator, i.e. the pink banana leaf print, the power mesh, the white lace etc. All of which I have saved onto my computer so if necessary I can take inspiration from or use again. I am also very proud that in the last year and a half my skills on illustrator have increased exponentially.
I feel as
though I have put a great deal of work in to create a visually appealing final outcome and have gone the extra mile to appeal to the aesthetic. Now that have completed the task at hand I can reflect on how my package has come together. I think it’s important to acknowledge that this project has been a series of challenges that I have been able to overcome and learn a great deal from and I am pleased with the final outcome.
