Turku Bridge Urban design IFHP Summer School Turku, Alto University, Helsinki 2015 Mentor: prof. Ilmavirta Tuomas Group work of 4, various education
02
02 More with Less - From Resource Scarcity to Social Abundance The assignment was to create an overall plan for the areas at both ends of the future bridge in Turku.
02 FIRST PANEL In Phase 1: “Activation that unfolds over a ten-year interval, from 2015 to 2024, waterfront activities are promoted in the areas.
02 The overall concept for this project has been developed around the keyword “zip”. The plan was envisioned with small-scale flexible interventions phased over time, so there is always the possibility to “unzip” a little bit if needed, based on feedback from users.
02 SECOND PANEL
Phase 2: “Diversification”, 15-years long, is emphasised on the addition of housing, and further developing the urban centres in both Hirvensalo and Uittamo.
02 The residential development continues on both sides. Due to the increased number of residents now living in the area, it is expected that there will be sufďŹ cient demand to justify construction of the new bridge.
02 THIRD PANEL
Phase 3: “Connection extends from 2040 to 2050. The proposed bridge is intended to be a destination in and of itself. The design will facilitate public transit and active transportation.

Community complex, meant for young adults moving away from home. Village provides a cheap ďŹ rst apartment with the comfort any young adult would need inside the same complex. An idea compatible with this design was an service box, that can be prior positioned in an apartment in the way user ďŹ nds it best for his needs. According to that they can also acuire an additional kitchen and maybe rent its neighbour appartment for larger family. 1 2

Because the initiative budget is low we came up with a solution of recycling building materials, providing efficient and sustainable structure, that is able to be transformed according to ones wishes. We wanted our apartments to be as versatile as they can get, and came up with an idea of module space that repeats throughout the whole complex with optimal light and can be used for various uses.

Vertical shelves and oor levels
Concept stands on an idea of vertical common space shared among the members. Each user pays a small amount of money per month and therefore gets multiple various sized basins and a tool case, that contains necesary tools, has a space for work and a seed drawer. It is designed in a way that worksurface can be undisturbed while the case is closed. These elements are stored in vertical shelves, accessible from various oor levels where basins with plants are placed. 1

Annual Mappelab organised competition on Italian beach, where young artists / architects design lowcost temporary structure for single-day festival. Exhibition space, stage, bookstore and other similar program designs are needed, including ideas for lighting and furniture details.
06 Rolled fabric Steel bars
Stage with folding technique and structure All materials would perfectly be natural origin, as this way only minimally processed elements could be used, like cotton, steel and wood. But since the price and material’s durability presents possible problem, polypropylene is advised for key material, which is still relatively easily recycled.

Anti-flood sacks, usually negatively associated, give us idea for modular prism elements, made from the same main fabric. Sewn in most versatile shape they are filled with present beach sand and are with positioning and piling used for all necessary elements.
