INTRODUCTION M
y goal in pursuing landscape and architectural photography is to make impactful images that create a strong emotional response with viewers. With each photographic piece I attempt to convey the incredible senses of awe and wonder experienced when visiting the many marvels of our world. I am profoundly impacted by the beauty that can be found in subject matter ranging from epic vistas to the details and colors of smaller subjects. Although I typically research each location I visit thoroughly, the weather and light conditions that I encounter are always unique and unpredictable – the creative opportunity that arises from this balance of planning and luck is what I enjoy most. I love exploring each location, finding new compositions and angles, and observing the variations that occur in a single scene with changes in weather and light. To me, each photograph represents a very special moment of experience comprised of both memory and feeling. I vividly remember standing above the Grand Canyon, feeling icy winds rush past me while cautiously peering over the edge at a ray of sunlight piercing through the dark clouds and illuminating nearly two billion years of the Earth’s geological history. I recall the adventure of climbing into the surreal environment of a slot canyon formed by years of flash floods, where sunlight can focus into magically distinct beams of light and simultaneously be reflected into a rainbow of colors illuminating the stone walls. I remember hiking for miles up steep and muddy terrain in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and reaching the calm, solitary stillness of a panoramic vista with majestic mountains, valleys, forests, and water of incredible color and beauty. These are the experiences that I treasure, that my photographs represent to me, and that I hope to share through my images.
This portfolio includes selections of some of my favorite and most popular works, and I thank you for taking a moment to share these images and experiences with me.
MY PHOTOGRAPHY STORY
I
have always had a passion for art, music, and all things creative. My journey into the world of photography was certainly not a direct one. The path I took started with a love of art and drawing (mostly comic book style superheroes), branched into music (playing and teaching guitar), then returned to visual arts in the form of a brief period of landscape painting. Somewhere in the middle of this journey, I also became an engineer which has been helpful in mastering many of the more technical aspects of photography. A few years after graduating, I received my first digital camera as a gift, a two megapixel (yes, two whole megapixel) Canon Elph. That little camera became my constant companion and helped me to discover just how much I love photographing landscapes, nature, and architecture. In 2010, I made a personal commitment to follow my landscape photography dreams. Entirely self-taught, since then I've absorbed every bit of information that I could find about equipment, photographing techniques, and processing techniques. I have practiced (and learned from many, many mistakes), practiced more, traveled as much as I could, and have even faced a few fears along the way. I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to visit some amazing places and meet some wonderful people on this adventure - two things that I am very, very grateful for. It has been an extraordinarily fun, educational, and deeply rewarding journey and I'm excited about all of the new adventures ahead.
