MAN CRITICAL Monica Supra

monica.supra@tametimes.co.za An injured truck driver was airlifted to the Union Hospital by ER24 on Sunday after he veered off the road and went down an embankment on the R59. When ER24 paramedics and Midvaal Fire and Rescue Services arrived on scene they found the man trapped in the truck. He is believed to be around 50 years old. Fire and Rescue Services had to use the jaws of life to extricate the driver from the truck. Paramedics assessed the man, and found that he had sustained critical injuries. He was provided with advanced life support treatment and airlifted by the ER24 helicopter to hospital for further medical care. The exact cause of what led to the incident is unknown. The authorities were on the scene.

Alberton History

Over the past few weeks I have come to learn again how often creative people are misunderstood. Not in a ’’myparents-don’t-understand-me-I-justwant-to-focus-on-my-art-right-now’’ way, but in a general perspective. Working in a creative environment is fantastic, but sometimes it can also take its toll on the different personalities. The beauty of it is that we don’t always have to see the world in the same manner everyone else does, and that’s OK. When a difference of opinion pops up, it will be dealt with in a dramatic manner. It will also be sorted out in a dramatic manner. Now take a group of creatives and send them to a small town like Cullinan for a weekend – and it’s exactly what you thought it would be. Within a few hours, the hotel was taken over, with us suggesting new drinks for the menu, playing our own music and making friends with everyone. The following day, the whole of Cullinan knew that we were there and where we were staying. I also learned that weekend, that when something sounds right in your head and you share certain jokes and phrases with your circle, other people will not necessarily understand it, and you will

g e t more than one confused look from people in the vicinity. In the end, it is your vibe that attracts your tribe, making my work environment one to look forward to when I wake up in the morning. On page 4, we placed a piece on entrepreneurship written by Mark Sham. He explains that you spend most of your time at your workplace, which is why the production office at tame TIMES feels it is extra important to keep a peaceful, but really fun, environment. The month of August is dedicated to women in South Africa, to commemorate the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 to protest against the extension of pass laws to women. I’m privileged to be surrounded by strong, creative women in both my work space, as well as in my personal life. I want to thank each and every woman in my life for being an inspiration on so many levels. tame TIMES salutes all women in the community and would love to hear what everyone is up to on Women’s Day on the 9th. Hope everyone has a great week ahead!

Primrose SAPS SUCCESSFUL ARRESTS

COPS FIND DRUGS IN CAR While patrolling Rietfontein Road in Primrose, police noticed a white VW Golf parked on the wrong side of the road. They went to investigate and found three occupants in the car. They then approached the driver and asked to search the vehicle. When the driver tried to get out, police found a Ziploc bag containing a white substance believed to be drugs. The 19-year-old suspect was arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS. He appeared at Germiston Court. VICTIM REFUSES TO GIVE UP Primrose police arrested a 25-year-old theft suspect after the victim of the crime called the police to hand the suspect over. The victim

further informed the police that he was in a train when he took out his cellphone to check the time. The accused grabbed the phone from the victim and ran towards Marlands. The victim chased him and caught hold of the accused, but was overpowered and the suspect ran off. The victim then went to the train station and saw the suspect there, and he caught him again. The security officers saw the incident and assisted the victim. They managed to arrest the suspect and, after searching him, found the victim’s phone. The police were called and responded very fast. The suspect was handed over to the police. Primrose police would like to thank all the parties involved for not taking the law into

their own hands. The suspect appeared at Germiston court. WOMAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT WITH BOTTLE A 21-year-old woman was arrested for Assault GBH when the victim went to the police to lay a charge against the suspect. She alleged that on 27 July, she was at her residence when she received a phone call from the accused, swearing at her and alleging that the victim was gossiping about her. The accused then came to the victim’s house and started assaulting her with a bottle, causing injury on the victim’s left hand and right knee. Police followed leads and the accused was arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS. The suspect is to appear at Germiston court soon. FALSE STATEMENT LEADS TO ARREST A 45-year-old woman was arrested for giving a false statement to the Primrose police. The police were investigating an inquest docket concerning a 15-year-old who was burned to death. When they questioned the mother, who appeared to have neglected her child, she informed them that she was in the bathroom when the shack caught fire during the day. According to the paramedic statement, however, the fire occurred at around 23:00 at night. A witness informed the police that the fire happened at night and that the mother was not home at the time, but was in fact sleeping over at her boyfriend’s house and the child was left alone.

Police are warning parents not to lock their children alone in shacks when they want to go out, and are asking community members to alert the police should they witness such incidents. The suspect appeared at Germiston court. FIVE SHEBEENS SHUT DOWN Primrose and Germiston Cluster police visited Delport and Marathon informal settlements to conduct an operation during which they managed to close down five illegal taverns. During the closure, five suspects aged between 22 and 49 were arrested for dealing in liquor without a licence. All the suspects paid admission of guilt fines and were released with a warning. Police are appealing to the community to refrain from selling liquor illegally. They have reported that they are encountering challenges of crimes such as domestic violence, assault GBH, murder and robberies within the informal settlements, and have vowed to keep on conducting similar operations until crime decreases. COPS SPREAD MADIBA MAGIC Primrose police and members of the crime prevention youth desk visited the Avril Elizabeth Home for the Physically Challenged on 24 July and spent time with the people as part of celebrating Mandela Month. The police and the youth took time to speak about safety and gave the people safety tips. The Primrose police would like to thank management for allowing them to spend time with the people.

On Saturday 25 July the Golden Lions finals took place at UJ’s Milo Park Stadium. Four teams represented Alberton High School in the finals. The u/16s and the u/14s both played against Carletonville High School. The u/16s won 19 – 12 and the u/14s drew 17-17. Unfortunately both the u/15s and the first team lost against President High School. Our heartiest congratulations go to our awesome u/16s who have won the Golden Lions trophy and also to the u/14s, who will be sharing the trophy with Carletonville High School. We are extremely proud of Alberton High School and our rugby boys. Best wishes from Parents, Grandparents, Families and Friends (u/16 team)!

Figures Models SA rules supreme at IMTA The International Model and Talent Convention held in New York from 20 to 24 July was an absolute adventure for Figures Models SA young talent and models. They competed against the international market, which included the United States of America, Japan, Finland, Australia, Canada and Britain. Our Figures Models and Talent SA group participated in modelling, singing, dancing and acting competitions – they conducted themselves professionally, looked stunning both on the stage/ramp and off, and were always polite and approachable. Many new friends and talent industry contacts were made which will hopefully be the beginning of a whole new chapter to their lives. Some of the most remarkable achievements included

several modelling contracts won with IMG and Wilhelmina, auditions for acting parts in an American movie being filmed next year, winning the group singing competition, placing 3rd in the solo dancing and the model actor of the year, receiving several top 10 placement medals, and two students receiving scholarships from the New York Film Academy and the New York Film Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and placing fourth in the team fashion competition. Figures SA are very proud of the youngsters for giving their best, having a blast and achieving so much during their week-long convention. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours and hope that their individual careers will be just as bright as they are.

Din-Al-View CPF

KENTON PRIMARY

DONKEY

TIP OF THE WEEK

DERBY

BE AWARE DON’T BECOME A VICTIM WARNING SIGNS ON THE ROAD The Din-Al-View CPF Acting Head Patroller would like to provide the information below to all property owners and tenants in their area, which includes Dinwiddie, Albermarle, Castleview, Norton Small Farms & Union. “I had a meeting with security officers I can trust to give me information on trends that criminals use to their benefit on a daily basis. These are serious issues that we need the public to be aware of and patrollers to be on the lookout for. SUSPICIOUS VEHICLES Most of the time criminals are very organised and know how to get away easily without fail. They plan their getaway before committing the crime, and this is why there are crime hotspots – they are easy getaway areas. Some criminals know that CPF know about this, so they improvise. The first place security officers are going to look for them is the station or boundaries, but by the time they get there, the criminals are long gone as there is always a car waiting for them around a corner. When you give a description to the CPF or police saying there were two suspects that fled, all they will be looking for

is the two suspects, and not a getaway car with three suspects inside (one being the driver). This is how they get away easily. CPF members need you please to report any suspicious vehicle standing still in a place where there is no reason for it to do so. Report it immediately - you might be saving someone’s life. HIJACKINGS The Wits Rifles N17 on- and off-ramps are prime hijack hotspots with open fields to watch from far, large bushes and reeds to hide in and a quick getaway to Kathlehong, Wadeville, Rondebult or Germiston - all these places are very high risk and this intersection is unfortunately the crossroad from hell in our area. The security officers also said to watch out for places where there are people begging, as your focus is on the beggar and not on your surroundings. Many hijackers pay the beggars not to warn people, and they comply as they need the cash or are already part of the syndicate. Never stop on the side of the road to help someone change a tyre - it could be a set-up, as the hijackers are sitting waiting for you to assist, to attack. They especially use a woman

to act as if she has had a breakdown. If you have to help, call the sector van or EMPD and tell them that there is a woman stuck at a certain location. Think about it: all of us have cellphones; all of us have someone that can help somewhere. Rather be selfish and safe than become a victim. There are auto assist companies that will help - keep their numbers on you if you really feel the need to help. COMMUNITY – FOOD FOR THOUGHT I would like the community to work with us in making people aware. Remember, you are only as strong as the person next to you when it comes to fighting crime - if you are not helping we lose half the battle. And when it comes to meetings we would like the members to bring the person next to them just once at least. Imagine how quickly and how strong our community would become in the fight against crime if the community stood together and attended meetings. Then the patrollers would be even more motivated and have a reason to spend their free time patrolling for members who do care about the person next to them and do it unconditionally. Please take a half an hour of your time once a month to attend. Much Appreciated.”

Join us for a fun-filled evening at the races on 22 August at the Kenton Primary Hall. Time: 18:00 for 18:30. Enjoy a spitbraai meal. No drinks served, own drinks welcome. Dress: funny or fancy. Prizes for the most amazing outfit. Adults only. Tickets: R150. Book at gill.storbeck@ telkomsa.net or phone 082 496 4825. Gauteng on mission TO END CRIME

should not repeat crime,” said NkosiMalobane. She also encouraged communities to form social movements against crime and emphasised on the importance of neighbourhood watch in fighting crime. MEC for Health in the province, Qedani Mahlangu delivered the key note address for the launch stating that the objective of the campaign is to make crime history in the province. “Community Police Forum (CPF) should be eyes and ears of the police and our children’s future depends on our actions today. We should mobilise communities against crime and reintroduce the same tactics we implemented in defeating apartheid. Crimes affect the image of the country and let us together declare war on bribery. When people pay bribery we are encouraging bribery to exist and we should all stop bribery in all government structures” She advised people to implement signals which would make resident aware when criminals attack a household. Mahlangu further recommend residents to make it their mission to know how their neighbours survives especially when they are not employed but living lavishing lives. ADVERTORIAL

Gauteng Department of Community Safety launched the Take Charge Campaign on 30 July at Sebokeng Zone Seven Stadium to mobilise citizens to partner with law enforcement agencies in fighting crime around the province. The campaign was also aimed at revitalizing and strengthening Community Policing Forums (CPF) around Gauteng. Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, Gauteng MEC for Community Safety urged people to refrain from buying stolen goods because that makes them accessories to crime. “We should all join hands in fighting crime to make our country safe. We should drive criminals out of our communities. Prisons should help to rehabilitate prisoners so that they

province will be no go area for criminals. “We should play a leading role in reducing murder, hijacking and house breaking. We should all refrain from buying stolen items from criminals. People should inform us whenever crime occurs and parents always dislike when informers report that their children are involved in criminal activities. Lets us become active citizens by joining patrollers and CPF in large numbers,” he said. Mothiba warned residents to stop taking law in their hands through mob justice and informed residents to hand over the criminals to the police when they catch them.

Thank who, thank you To end off a marvellous campaign of ‘’Thank who! Thank you!’’ the Grade 6 and 7 pupils of St Catherine’s accompanied Miss Hearnshaw and Mrs Coetzee to the Kinross Old Age Home in Germiston. They handed over pamper boxes filled with toiletries, socks, sweets, etc. to the

admin, kitchen, cleaning and nursing staff who care for the 72 residents to show some gratitude to people who serve in the community. The gratitude was overwhelming. There were a few goodies and cake left for the residents to enjoy as well. The learners enjoyed the experience and were kind

enough even to sing happy birthday to a resident, which ended their visit with happy tears. St Catherine’s pupils spread some warmth with pamper boxes at the Kinross Old Age Home.

THE DAY THAT

“OVER 20 000 WOMEN FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE CAME TOGETHER IN 1956 IN PROTEST AGAINST WHAT THEY BELIEVED WAS UNFAIR LEGISLATION AGAINST WOMEN.”

BEAT

PAPER IF YOU STRIKE A WOMAN YOU STRIKE A ROCK Lizeth Kotze 011 862 8500 The month of August is known to the South African public as “Women’s Month.” This is due to the women who marched to the Union Buildings in 1956 in protest against what they believed was unfair legislation against women. Over 20 000 women from all walks of life came together for this historic occasion. Many advances in the field of women’s rights have been made since then. Women have certainly stepped up to the occasion by fulfilling their rightful role in the corporate world. Many now occupy leadership roles while others have entered into what was once known as maledominant areas of the corporate world, and are doing so with great success. The women of 1956 gave all women a voice, paving the road for a better tomorrow. (Source: www.gov.za)

Society has become dependent on smartphones to operate and for many, they have become like a ‘drug,’ with ‘addicts’ constantly feeling the need to check texts, emails or the latest news on various forms of social media. The constant need to keep in touch has led to a new and very real addiction to be born. “Nomophobia, the fear of being without your mobile device,” is viewed as a serious condition that some experts believe warrants the intervention of a rehab facility. Paul Hokemeyer, a therapist and addiction expert, explains that smartphone addiction causes the ‘feel good chemicals’ like serotonin and dopamine to be released. This provides a form of gratification to the abuser in the same way as any other addictive substance would. “Obsessive and compulsive smartphone use is a symptom of underlying behavioural health and personality issues,” Hokemeyer explains. “What happens is that people who are suffering from issues like depression, anxiety, trauma, and socially-

challenging personalities self-medicate by reaching for things outside of themselves to manage their internal discomfort.” STEPS TO GUARD AGAINST CELL PHONE ADDICTION (www.psychcentral.com): Monitor your cellphone use Keep a journal of how much time you spend on your mobile device. Start cutting back Allow yourself to only spend a limited amount of time on your device per day. Live in the moment Experience the joys of the present by switching your mobile device off every now and again. Aim for deeper connections Getting a ‘like’ on social media isn’t as valuable as affirmation in real life. Distinguish between what is really important Every message or email isn’t life or death. If something is that important, someone will call you. (Additional source: www.shape.com)

your world this week Possible part of Flight MH370 found Officials are “highly confident” that a piece of wreckage found on the shores of a remote Indian Ocean island on Wednesday 29 July belongs to the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. People were cleaning a beach on the French island of Reunion and found an object that derives from a Boeing 777. “The only 777 aircraft that we’re aware of in the Indian Ocean that could have led to this part floating is MH370,” said Martin Dolan, Head of the Australian agency coordinating the underwater search for the plane. Aviation investigators will analyse the wreckage this week. Flight MH370 disappeared nearly 17 months ago with 239 people aboard. (www.cnn.com)

Swedish electronic music band Little Dragon has kept local fans in suspense for several months since their South African tour announcement. On 27 April 2015 the band announced via social media that they would be performing in the country and only revealed tour dates some three months later on 25 July. Early bird tickets went on sale on 28 July and were sold out in less than 24 hours. Following a sold-out tour of South Africa in 2012, the band will be touring to Cape Town and Johannesburg later this year. Formed in 1996 in Gothenburg, Little Dragon consists of Yukimi Nagano (vocals, percussion), Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrik Källgren Wallin (bass) and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards). The band decided to call themselves after the nickname given to Nagano due to the “fuming tantrums” she used to throw while recording in the studio. Little Dragon boasts four albums to date. Presented by Red Bull Studios, Little Dragon will perform in Cape Town on Friday 16 October and Johannesburg on Saturday 17 October.

Tributes paid to courageous Rice Former South Africa and Nottinghamshire captain Clive Rice has been hailed as “courageous and inspirational” and “a giant of the game” after his death at the age of 66. Rice was a hugely respected captain and player, notably for Nottinghamshire and Transvaal, but saw his full international

ambitions thwarted for 20 years by South Africa’s sporting exile during the apartheid era. Eventually, at the age of 42, he captained his country in three one-day internationals against India after readmission - the so-called ‘Friendship Tour’ marking the start and the end of his South Africa career. MTN DISCONNECTS QHUBEKA CYCLING TEAM

Despite their superb debut performance at the Tour de France, team Qhubeka’s sponsorship from MTN has been dropped after eight years. The title sponsor of the African cycling team said on Wednesday that it was ending its agreement, saying that the partnership had “reached its conclusion.” The mobile phone provider added that it would not be renewing. MTN’s Group Corporate Affairs Executive, Chris Maroleng, said the team “put on a fantastic display of power and athleticism at the Tour de France and we are very proud of their achievements.” He added, “Our partnership with the team has come full circle and we wish the team the absolute best in the future as we pass on the baton to the next sponsor.” Since 2007, close to R120-million had been invested in the South African-based team, said MTN. “As a normal business practice, MTN embarks

on a review of its sponsorship portfolio. We take into consideration the alignment of each of the sponsored properties to business objectives and thus we are not renewing the contract with the Qhubeka organisation,” concluded Maroleng. Team Qhubeka finished fifth overall out of 22 teams in the team classification at the Tour de France. The team also achieved several firsts at the Tour – Qhubeka became the first African team in the Tour’s modern era and allowed two Eritrean riders to become the first from their country to ride at the race. Eritrean cyclist Daniel Teklehaimanot became the first African to wear the polka dot jersey as leader of the mountains classification, and the Briton Stephen Cummings won a stage on Mandela Day, Saturday 18 July. Making Africa even more proud, the nine-man team set a target of financing 5 000 bicycles for children in South Africa at the Tour.
