The Rand Airshow 2015 once again made for a great day out for the family. Spectators saw the flying aces of South Africa with some tricks, stunts and exhilarating demonstrations. The Rand Airshow 2015 featured old warbirds, helicopters, military displays, aerobatics and much more. The Eqstra Flying Lions entertained with a few North American T-6 Harvard Formation Aerobatics. The Radial Formation, consisting of five Harvards,

one DC3, one DC4, a Beech 18 and three T28s, was a definite highlight for the spectators. For all fans of the vintage WW II aircraft, known to most as the Dakota, Flippie Vermeulen displayed the iconic DC-3, making sure that his performance was in full view of all spectators. Aviation legend Scully Levin and many others left a great impression on the spectators, leaving them wanting even more at the Rand Airshow 2016.

Satire in DIE SUBURBS

LIGTE, KAMERA, ... ASKIES? GRIMERING?! As early as 1964, Gene Roddenberry drafted a proposal for the sci-fi series that would become the beloved Star Trek. The intention of the show was to have a progressive political agenda, reflective of the emerging counter-culture of the youth movements in the 1960s. Roddenberry wanted Star Trek to show humanity what it might develop into, if it would learn from the lessons of the past - most specifically ending violence. Star Trek boasted aspirational ideals, racial unity, and a destiny for humanity that included peace, hope, and bold adventure. The show tackled race, the Vietnam War,

ageing, extinction, power that corrupts, mental illness, personal sacrifice, pacifism and many other social issues. For the last edition of Women’s Month, it is notable to point out that women were all part of the crew, who took over whenever needed, all while wearing miniskirts. These women included doctors, religious leaders, and rebels who fought for their cause. So what can we learn from Star Trek? Absolutely everything. We can take hands as a community and go where no community has gone before… Live long and prosper.

Deur Stefan van Niekerk

Iets vang jou oog. ‘n Vrou verskyn by die deur. Of ander geheime transaksies.

“Do you have a time?”, vra hy. “Eight o’ clock”, sê jy, “eight o’clock tonight”.

Barry Hilton LIVE at

CARNIVAL CITY SKAKEL VERSLAG Award-winning South African comedy legend, Barry Hilton, will be performing at Carnival City for one night only on 28 August. With his quick wit, laugh-outloud physical antics and stomach-crunching facial expressions, Barry is geared to ignite the Big Top Arena with riotous laughter before he jets off to perform at the Kuala Lumpur International Comedy Festival. Barry has performed at internationally renowned venues such as The Royal Albert Hall in London, the MGM Grand in Macau, The Sydney Comedy Store, Harrah’s Improv in Las Vegas, The Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai and The Crown in Melbourne, Australia – the largest casino complex in the Southern Hemisphere. Humble as ever, the hilarious Hilton continues to draw capacity crowds to venues across Africa and beyond. His unique sense of humour has international appeal and has earned him a fan base that spans continents. The seasoned comedian, who performs on stages around the world,

feels a very special connection with South African audiences. “As diverse as they are, the people of SA know how to laugh at life and at themselves. Nothing gives me greater joy than making people laugh,” says Barry. Whether you’re a teenager or a pensioner, a single dad or an internet-dating 40-year-old divorcee, you will laugh till your belly aches listening to Barry’s side-splitting interpretations of everyday events. “I write at least 10 seconds of new material every day,” grins Barry. “So whether you’ve seen my show ten times or never before, there is always new material to make you laugh.” A South African comedy stalwart, Barry never fails to please and always leaves his audience in stitches. “Barry Hilton must be the funniest comedian to have ever come out of South Africa and he is set to be one of the big comedy names in Australia and everywhere else that he is now working,” says Barry’s Australian booking agent, Graeme Gillies, owner of Grayboy Entertainment, based in Sydney but providing world-class entertainment across the globe. Tickets are R100 and are available from Computicket.

Celebrating LEFTIES THE POWER OF SPONTANEOUS CREATIVITY On 13 August Creative Academy Pre-school and Baby Centre celebrated “International Lefties Day.” With only about 13% of the world’s population being left-handed, they have only a handful of lefthanded children in the school, but they all share this unique quality with their assistant Patience.

Laerskool Orion with HA!Man HA!Man, an internationally recognized cellist, together with Joke Debaere, a Belgian actress and word artist, mesmerized their audience with their performance in Wilropark on Saturday 15 August. The South African born HA!Man, who currently lives in Belgium, is a cellist with an impressive talent as musician and composer.

Jordan Leite, a lefthanded student at Creative Academy

HA!Man and Debaere, together with local choirs, created an evening filled with song and musical wonder. The Orion Primary School Senior choir, the Waterstone College Intersen choir and the well-known Colla Voce choir were all part of this magical evening. Cellist Willie Naudé, a Grade 7 learner from Helderkruin, also mesmerized the audience with his talent.

EDCON DONATES 600 PAIRS OF SHOES On 18 August, a team of Edcon employees donated 600 pairs of shoes to children at Leeuwpoort Primary School in Germiston. The shoes were collected during a Mandela Day event at Edcon’s offices in Edgardale, where staff members, including top management,

paired a total of 300 pairs of shoes during the event. An additional 300 pairs were purchased by staff from a pop-up store that was set up at the Edcon Head Office to ensure that every child at Leeuwpoort Primary School could receive a brand-new pair of school shoes.

Spring is definitely in the air as the Alberton Figures Models and Talent students demonstrated so beautifully on Saturday 15 August at the Bracken Park Hall. They were each given a plain white t-shirt that they had to decorate for the Spring Fever Show – by the time they were finished – the t-shirts did not even look like the originals. There were flowers, butterflies, new trees, ivy, spring hats, Hawaiian hoops and loops galore and so much more. The atmosphere was very festive and hope rode the air – hope for summer to hurry up. The stage décor was just as lovely

with waterfalls of white, red and green spring flowers cascading down the curtain backdrop. Well done to all the beautiful contestants who won, as well as to the graduating students. Each and every student put a lot of effort into their unique designs and made the show a wonderful, springy success.

ABC’S FOR

CONFIDENT GIRLS Lizeth Kotze 011 862 8500 With August being Women’s Month, much attention is placed on the current and past inspirational women, but what about those who will influence the future? In order for the little girls of today to become the pillars of tomorrow, we need to instil confidence and self-assurance in them. By doing this we will empower them to face the future while walking in the shoes of the many inspirational women before them. According to Barb Steinberg, a clinical social worker, confidence can be built by enforcing three key factors, namely achievement, belonging, and competence.

A B

chievement Achievement does not necessarily refer to external achievements, but rather the achievement of developing her self-worth through balancing her mind, body, and heart. Realizing that there is more to life than looks is indeed a true achievement. elonging Providing young girls with a true sense of belonging will provide them with much needed security. Simply belonging to the so-called ‘in’ group among her peers creates a false sense of security. Feeling accepted and valued at home secures a true sense of belonging, which will increase her confidence and make her feel comfortable in her own skin.

C

ompetence Jumping in to solve her problems for her might not be the way to go. Give her the space and freedom to work things out for herself. Praising her efforts and encouraging her to stand on her own two feet will help grow her confidence.

Helping children OVERCOME TRAUMA We live in an era filled with traumatic events: car accidents, hijackings, armed robberies and exposure to violence or death has unfortunately become a daily occurrence. As adults, we sometimes struggle to overcome the effects of a traumatic event and need help in order to move forward. Children are dependent on the support of their parents to overcome the negative effects that might result from such an event. A child’s age, personality and current circumstances all affect how he or she reacts to, and deals with, trauma. As parents, we want to keep our children safe and out of harm’s way, but life does not always work out that way. Unfortunately, children also sometimes either fall victim to, or witness, a traumatic event. It is then up to us as caregivers to offer our support and to help them overcome the emotional consequences. If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having a child who has gone through some form of trauma: • Try to remain calm. Letting your own emotions get the best of you will only make the matter worse for your child. • Offer your help and support to your child and give them the reassurance that you will stand by them throughout the ordeal. • Be prepared for any negative behaviour they might display. Also let them know

It is furthermore recommended that you, as the influential adult, model the behaviour you preach to your daughter. Being critical of yourself, adopting a negative outlook on life and trying to gain external approval are all examples of behaviours contradictory to building confidence.

that these reactions are normal. • Encourage them to talk about the experience, but do not pressure them if they are not up to it. • Answer all questions honestly. • Get them to stick to their daily routine as far as possible. It is quite possible that simply talking to you as a parent might not be enough and they might need additional help to overcome the traumatic event. Children often do not tell you verbally that they need professional help, but show you through a variety of behaviours. These behaviours include: • problems sleeping • a change in their eating habits • withdrawal from friends or previously enjoyed activities • younger children might go back to earlier behaviours like bedwetting • older children can experience a negative change in their school performance Any behaviour that raises concern, whether at home or at school, which has developed after a traumatic event, should not be overlooked. Seek the help of a professional mental health practitioner to help your child overcome the event. If these negative effects are not dealt with in an appropriate manner, the negative effects will persist and could even become worse.

“Life will return to normal, however, after trauma, it may be a ‘new’normal.” ~ Dr Ann Masten

CANCER SYMPTOMS OFTEN OVERLOOKED BY WOMEN Lizeth Kotze

Lizeth.kotze@tametimes.co.za In general women are seen as the primary caregivers and often neglect to look after themselves. When they develop an ailment, they tend to ignore the symptoms in order to move on with their busy lives. Health experts recommend that women take the time to pay attention to any warning signs their bodies might reveal. They urge women to take notice of anything different, odd or unexplainable happening to their bodies, since this could help with the early detection of something serious like cancer.

SYMPTOMS THAT ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED (articles.mercola.com): ● wheezing and shortness of breath ● chronic cough and chest pain ● frequent fever and infections ● difficulty swallowing ● swollen lymph nodes or lumps on the neck, underarm or groin ● excessive bleeding or constant bleeding ● weakness and fatigue ● bloating and abdominal weight gain feeling full and unable to eat

● pelvic and abdominal pain ● rectal bleeding or bloody stool ● unexplained weight loss ● upset stomach and stomach-ache ● red, sore or swollen breast ● nipple changes ● unusually heavy and painful periods and bleeding between periods ● swelling of facial features ● changes in nails ● back pain or pain in the lower right side

Any of these symptoms could indicate a wide variety of health problems, but should also be viewed in a serious light since they could be signs of some form of cancer. Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you are experiencing any of the above.

Indonesian security forces and rescue teams carry coffins containing the remains of some of the passengers recovered from the crash site of the Trigana Air passenger plane at Sentani Airport, near Jayapura, Papua province, Indonesia, yesterday. MaNtuli breaks

THE SILENCE

According to a report on 16 August, President Jacob Zuma was not the one who told MaNtuli to leave the Nkandla homestead. State Security Minister David Mahlobo was the one who asked Zuma’s

estranged wife, Nompumelelo Ntuli-Zuma to move out, along with her three children. Ntuli-Zuma’s lawyer Ulrich Roux told the Sunday Times that the Minister’s reason for instructing his client to leave was because of an alleged ‘’sensitive matter’’ that needed to be investigated. He also said that Ntuli-Zuma was not allowed to be present during the investigation. In June last year, reports emerged of a poison plot allegedly involving Ntuli-Zuma, after the President fell ill. He learned two months later that he had been poisoned. Last weekend, Ntuli-Zuma broke the silence and replied to questions issued by the Sunday Times through Roux. She was ordered to leave Nkandla in February this year. She offered her full co-operation pertaining to the alleged investigation. (www.news24.com)

Beverly Hills 90210 star has

breast cancer Feisty American actress Shannen Doherty confirmed to the media last week that she is battling breast cancer. Known for her roles in hit television series such as Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, the 44-year-old star gave an exclusive statement to People magazine on Wednesday. “Yes, I have breast cancer, and I am currently undergoing treatment,” she told People. “I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life. I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me.” The news came after TMZ reported that Doherty had filed a lawsuit against her former business manager, accusing her of not paying insurance premiums, causing coverage for the actress to lapse. According to the lawsuit, Doherty was diagnosed in March, reports

People. She “discovered that she had i n v a s i v e breast cancer metastatic to at least one lymph node” and “was informed that her cancer had spread during 2014 (when she w a s uninsured).” The suit further alleges that, had Doherty had health insurance at the time, the cancer could have been caught earlier, and she would not have to face the current likely treatment of chemotherapy and a mastectomy. Her former business manager has denied that she let the coverage lapse. Doherty says she is unable to work because of her illness. (www.cnn.com)

The wreckage of an Indonesian plane which went missing with 54 people on board has been spotted in the remote western Papua region. Authorities had initially hoped to use helicopters to transport the remains of Sunday’s crash from the site in Papua province, but bad weather meant the bodies had to be carried on foot out of the jungle. Hundreds of locals and rescuers were involved in the arduous task of taking the bodies about 15 kilometres to the settlement of Oksibil, the intended destination of the Trigana Air plane. Captain Beni Sumaryanto, Trigana Air’s Service Director of Operations, said all the bodies had been recovered, and had now been flown on to the Papuan capital Jayapura. The Trigana Air flight lost contact on Sunday 16 August as it flew from the provincial capital, Jayapura, to the town of Oksibil. Indonesia’s transport minister said the aircraft had been found by local people in the Bintang highlands region. Indonesia’s postal office has told the BBC that the plane was carrying four bags containing cash, about 6.5-billion rupiah for villagers living in remote places in Papua. The ATR42-300 twin turboprop plane was carrying 44 adult passengers, five children and infants, and five crew. (www.bbc.com; www.iol.co.za)

CARA DELEVINGNE

DITCHES MODELLING

23-year-old British fashion it girl Cara Delevingne has officially moved on from modelling, saying that she felt ‘hollow’ in her now-former line of work. Last week, Delevingne told London’s The Times that she will “not [be] doing fashion work anymore.” She added that she suffered from anxiety and body-shaming as a supermodel and felt subjected to “disgusting” poses in her early days in the business. “Modelling just made me feel a bit hollow after a while. It didn’t make me grow at all as a human being. And I kind of forgot how young I was … I felt so old.” Through the stress, Delevingne developed severe psoriasis, a chronic, visible skin condition which made her feel even more isolated in the industry. “People would put on gloves and not want to touch me because they thought it was, like, leprosy or something.”

She said that her self-esteem was damaged due to being thrown into the limelight at a very young age. “It is a mental thing as well because if you hate yourself and your body and the way you look, it just gets worse and worse,” said Delevingne. She added, “I am a bit of a feminist and it makes me feel sick. It’s horrible and it’s disgusting...[These are] young girls. You start when you are really young and you do, you get subjected to... not great stuff.” Delevingne has now turned to the film industry and is set on making a career in Hollywood. You can catch her in mystery comedy-drama Paper Towns as well as the 2016 comic book movie Suicide Squad and the upcoming fantasy film Pan, an origin story for Peter Pan and Captain Hook, where she will play a mermaid. Trouble in paradise for

Ashley Madison users

After the personal details of 37-million AshleyMadison.com users - a website used to have affairs - were exposed online, the hackers appear to have upped their game, by taking direct aim at the company’s top executive, Noel Biderman. Biderman is the CEO of Avid Life Media, Ashley Madison’s parent company. The new release was accompanied by a note saying, ‘’Hey Noel, you can admit it’s real now.’’ The company’s former CTO tried hard to convince reporters that the data dump, which includes the details of 175 000 South African men and women, was fake. Rally championship

thrown open The championship was thrown wide open as Toyota’s Poulter and Coetzee secured victory in the tough and dusty Imperial Toyota Tshwane Motor Rally. It was a fascinating, exciting, yet tough duel between the leading championship contender; yet in the end Leeroy Poulter and Elvéne Coetzee (Castrol Team Toyota Yaris S2000) emerged victorious in the Imperial Toyota Tshwane Motor Rally. The outcome of the rally, the sixth round in the SA National Rally Championship, was hanging in the balance until the penultimate stage when Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton (Ford Performance Fiesta) fell by the wayside due to steering problems with their Fiesta. Up to that point, with two stages to go, the championship leaders led their Toyota challengers by a margin of only 1.3 seconds, and all was set for a nail-biting finale to the dusty rally in and around the town of Cullinan in Tshwane. But it was not to be… After winning all four stages yesterday Cronje and Houghton had a handy lead of 12.7 seconds over Poulter/Coetzee, but in the opening stage this morning (won by Henk Lategan/Barry White in their VW Sasolracing Polo racing under Superally rules) were eight seconds slower than the Toyota crew. Cronje/Houghton duly made up the lost time in the next stage, winning it, but then lost 10 seconds to Poulter and Coetzee in stage eight, cutting their lead down to only 2.3 seconds. In the next stage Poulter took another 0.4 seconds out of their lead, to trail by only 1.9 seconds. The Ford Performance pair’s woes in the next stage (they managed to fix the steering, losing 16 minutes, and eventually were classified 15th overall) saw Poulter and Coetzee take their third consecutive victory in the series – thereby level-pegging their championship chances... It also secured a double podium for the Castrol Team Toyota with Giniel de Villiers and Carolyn Swan finishing runners-up – just under half a minute adrift of their team mates. However, getting lost in the excitement of the battle for victory was the mighty tussle between De Villiers/Swan and the

experienced Volkswagen Sasolracing crew of Hergen Fekken and Pierre Arries. The two teams were swapping virtually identical times in the stages, and at the finish the difference between them was only 7.3 seconds – while they were split by only 5.6 seconds after the first day of the event. While team-mates Lategan and White were making hay under Superally rules, winning three special stages on day two, Gugu Zulu and Hilton Auffray (VW Sasolracing Polo S2000) drove a steady race to secure fourth position. They were followed by team-mates Thilo Himmel and Armand du Toit, scoring a rare race finish in fifth, followed by Ernie van der Walt/Greg Godrich (Vecto Fuel Toyota Yaris) in sixth position, in the process also winning the Northern Championship regional rally overall.

Theuns Joubert and Mari van der Walt (Salom Agri Toyota Auris) drove a measured race to finish seventh overall and win the NRC4 challenge after the Namibians Wilro Dippenaar/Kes Naidoo (North City Panelbeaters Toyota Auris) had to withdraw just before the final stage. This effort also saw Joubert and Van der Walt finish second in the regional event. The battle royal in the S1600 class was highlighted by the spectacular crash of log leaders Matthew Vacy-Lyle and Schalk van Heerden. The pair hit a big jump in stage eight and their Fragram Tool Toyota Etios R2 landed badly, causing it to roll over at high speed. Luckily both of them were unhurt. Meanwhile their fellow Toyota campaigners and overnight class leaders Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy-Lyle (Yato Tools Toyota Etios

R2) stretched their advantage over Chad van Beurden/Nico Swartz (Jem Sport Ford Fiesta R2) after the Ford pair lost over 3 minutes in stage six. With Richard Leeke/Rikus Fourie (ATS Ford Fiesta R2) rolling out of contention after breaking a control arm and AC Potgieter/ Tommy du Toit (Ricky B VW Polo R2) damaging the radiator when hitting a major jump, both retiring in stage nine, Paulus Franken/Henry Kohne (Manitou VW Polo R2) moved up to second in the class, finishing nearly 1 minute and 40 seconds behind the Etios team, with Van Beurden/Swartz third. The seventh and penultimate round of the 2015 South African Rally championship, the Toyota Cape Rally, is scheduled for 18 and 19 September in the Western Cape Province.

South Africa has four new Karting Champions following a dramatic weekend’s action at a hot and steamy Idube Raceway near Pietermaritzburg. Local lad from Verwoerdpark and scholar from Laerskool President Steyn, Altan Bouw stole a dramatic last heat Vortex Mini Rok title; Stuart White from Bloemfontein emerged an easy Junior Rok champion;, Chassen Bright from P.E. took back-to-back Super Rok championships and Nathan Parkins from Pretoria won the SA IAME X30 shifter title. Perhaps the biggest upset of the day saw Alberton’s own, Altan Bouw, score a second and two vital, primary school age Mini Rok 60cc, wins to draw even on points with reigning champion JP Hamman from Worcester and steal the title by virtue of having one more

win through the year. It was a bruising day in Mini Rok with fraught action throughout as Altan stole both wins on the last laps of the second and third heats. Wining the SA National Mini Rok championship ensures Altan a drive at the Vortex Rok World Finals, to fly the SA flag high, in Lonato, Italy end-October.
