BARBARA HITS
THE BIG SCREEN PATIENCE PUTS ALBERTON GIRL ON THE BIG SCREEN
By: Bernard Louw wa-Moselakgomo lasted two days. People seemed to be impressed with the character I portrayed. Ever since, I have received a lot of compliments in a number of places I go to, and this affirmed my acting ability,” said Barbara. “After completing my studies I knew that it would be difficult to crack the film industry, so I was prepared to take up any position, which would afford me an opportunity to enter the industry. “And people usually say one needs to follow your dreams. I believe one needs patience when following your dreams. Being patient with my growth has been key to my achievement.’’ Barbara says the actress in her most probably comes from her father, whom she describes as the “life of the party;” while her mother, who she says is “the centre that holds the family together,” brings out the lady in her.
A l b e r t o n born Barbara Brasington, 26, recently made her debut appearance on the big screen after earning herself a role in Vir Altyd, a South African movie, based on a love story, which was launched on 12 February. Tame TIMES sat down with Barbara to find out more. Confident and lively, with a manner that displayed humility at the same time, she leaned forward in her chair to make each point with clarity. “After studying for a Degree on Live Performance at AFDA, a film institute in Johannesburg, I worked behind the scenes and my tasks, among other things, included wardrobe, make up of artists etc.,” Barbara said. “My director noticed me while I was jokingly acting out something to our crew - that’s when I was asked if I wouldn’t mind acting a small part in Vir Altyd. To my surprise my shoot

HOOGSTE BOME VAL DIE VERSTE
Sometimes in life, you meet old friends at random places. You instantly reconnect and remember why you became friends in the first place. And so the friendship just picks up where you left off. It was the same when I decided to return to tame TIMES. I ran into our CEO, Karin Blignaut one day and remembered all the good and fun things about working with these people. A week later, I was back. I think that if there’s one group of people who can bring ‘’gees’’ to any event, it’s the people of tame TIMES. Last week at the Alberton Business League prize-giving, we took to the dancefloor and had some great laughs. Afterwards we were still laughing about everything on the WhatsApp group, just enjoying everyone’s company. It was a difficult week for South Africa, but the one thing about our nation is that we will always find a way to make our own lives more enjoyable. Theodore Roosevelt said: ‘’Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.’’ We simply have to go on, even when the future seems bleak. The future of my favourite place in Johannesburg, The Good Luck Bar, certainly doesn’t seem bleak. They have been going from strength to strength ever since they officially re-opened last year. Have a look on page 7 to see why you should drop in ASAP!

drug awareness
campaign The Parents of Phumula Primary School came in numbers to listen to Sgt Phumza Mgedezi and Cst Miranda Maseko when the police and Metro Police held a recent drug awareness campaign. The parents were informed about responsible parenting and safe school transport. Safety tips were discussed and pamphlets were handed out. The police, Metro Police, Department of Community Safety, Department of Education and Pastor Dumisani Dube have formed a partnership to fight drug use at schools. All the stakeholders joined hands and visited Alberton Primary School on Friday 19 February, when learners were informed about the dangers of drug use. A pledge was made by the learners to “SAY ‘NO’ TO DRUGS.” More visits to other schools will follow soon. The SAPS, in partnership with Metro Police, conducted a school search at two high schools around the Alberton area, with one school in Sector 1 and the other in Sector 2. In Sector 1 nothing was found, while in Sector 2 dagga, cigarettes and a dagga plant were found at the school. No one was arrested, as the dagga could not be linked to anyone.

to parents South Africa Search and Rescue would like to issue a warning to all parents, as two occupants of a motor vehicle tried to lure children into their vehicle on Friday 19 February at a certain school. The organisation has been informing schools about the incidents and has requested security and patrols to be sharpened, especially during the mornings

Vivacious Valentine’s Valentine’s weekend comes but once a year and Alberton Figures Modelling and Talent Agency put on a glorious romantic show for their students’ first social event of the year at Dinamika High School in Brackenhurst on Saturday 13 February. The colour scheme of red, white and a little bit of naughty-but-nice black was striking against the bright red stage backdrop. From tiny tots to strutting teenagers, they wore outfits that were soft and flattering and sometimes debonair. Dancers and models mingled both on stage and off and the atmosphere was set for one red-hot show.
The talent was staggering and a well-deserved shout-out goes to the parents and students for their wonderful effort in making this social event a great success. There were 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for the best dressed students and Miss Congeniality and the judges had a hard time making their decisions. Thank you to Dinamika High School for graciously allowing the show to take place in their hall – it was a lovely venue to start off the year. To all the young ladies and gentlemen who participated in the show – you are going to be heart-breakers one day – so watch out, world!
Shalom: Broken heart
Shalom readers, We discuss the topic “Broken heart.” Maybe you have been feeling down, disappointed; you have fear, shame; you feel ridiculous or rejected, abandoned, stressed, depressed. As your friend, I am sorry. But know that God cares about you. Where is God and what was He doing when you were weeping? God was weeping as well, with you. The Bible says in Psalm 30:5, “ Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Now you need freedom because sometimes we become slaves of fear, other people's expectations, past memories, unknown future. All you have to do now is to open your heart to Jesus and give Him your heart. You have no idea of what God is able to do in your life, do you? Jeremiah 32:27 says: ‘’I am the Lord of all mankind. Is there anything too difficult for me? I pray and declare that God will restore your heart and wipe away your tears. Keep on sending us your prayer requests by SMS or Whatsapp on 071 798 2273. Outstanding swimming achievements
After four weekends of intense competition, Germiston’s Nadia Calore (14), who is a Grade 9 pupil of Jeppe High School for Girls, has achieved her goal to swim at this year’s SWIM SOUTH AFRICA Level #1 Regionals, which take place from 1 to 3 April at the Delville Swimming Pool. The last time Nadia competed before the Regionals - last weekend at the Central Gauteng Aquatics Level #1 Year End Gala (held at Ellis Park) - she walked off with a
“Top-1O” finish in all eight of the events in which she participated. Two of these were medal positions (a silver and a bronze). As if that were not enough, she also set two personal best times in the 5Om Freestyle and 1OOm Backstroke. We would like to congratulate Nadia on this outstanding achievement and wish her everything of the best for the Regionals in April.

WHERE CUISINE MEETS CULTURE “ SINCE I WAS A KID MY DREAM
WAS TO BECOME A CHEF. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED COOKING. GREEKS LIKE TO GET TOGETHER IN BIG GROUPS AROUND A TABLE ENJOYING DIFFERENT TYPES OF FOOD, YOU KNOW, MEZE STYLE.
”
Angela Kazakou, owner of Calisto’s Portuguese Restaurant Mall at Newmarket in Alberton, is what one would presume from a quintessential hostess; and with her Greek heritage added to the mix, you can expect to receive the full blown European culinary experience. Sitting down with Kazakou over a cup of coffee and lunch, she delved into her life in detail, expressing her appreciation of food, the love for her family, and her determination to succeed. Hailing from Athens in Greece, Kazakou moved to South Africa in 2013 – a decision she says was tough to make. “I chose to leave Greece before the financial crisis catastrophe struck the country. I decided to move on and start
something new in South Africa; I country I believe has many opportunities,” explains Kazakou. After exploring various industries, she decided to pursue a career in restauranteering given the fact that she has a love and passion for food – something which began from a young age. “In Greece I owned a coffee shop with my mother Currently living in Bedfordview, Kazakou’s first food venture was taking ownership of Calisto’s Bedford Centre Square in Bedfordview in 2014. Then last year she became the owner of Calisto’s Mall at Newmarket which opened in October 2015. “I like Portuguese food – it’s very tasteful. I also like the Calisto’s brand very much,” notes Kazakou. Entrenched in Greek culture, Kazakou’s heritage shines through her actions, personality and the way she runs Calisto’s Mall at Newmarket. “Since I was a kid my dream was to become a chef. I have always loved cooking. Greeks like to get together in
big groups around a table enjoying different types of food, you know, meze style,” she explains. Looking at the menu, Kazakou says that Calisto’s prawns are at the top of her list. She also recommends the chicken as well as the breakfast buffet priced at R89,95 which is offered on Saturdays and Sundays between 07:00am to 11:00am. The buffet also serves a mini breakfast for R39,95. Apart from being a foodie fanatic, Kazakou is also a dedicated mother of two and a studious learner whose goal is to further her skills and experience in the world of cooking. “I’ve learnt that a chef never knows enough – you are always learning,” she says. When she’s not in the kitchen, Kazakou enjoys playing tennis, travelling, studying, and spending time with her kids. Kazakou’s ultimate goal for 2016
is to ensure that Calisto’s Mall at Newmarket is the best franchise in the Calisto’s brand.

ALBERTON HIGH HOSTS
CORPORATE BRUNCH
During February, Alberton High School hosted a Corporate Brunch with popular talk radio host David O’Sullivan, who came to share a leadership talk. Alberton High School, along with the principal of the School of Excellence, Mr Olivier, was proud to have and honour David O’Sullivan. “Our ultimate aim at Alberton High School is to serve the community by successfully educating the child for the future, and with that we provide our students with holistic education. When it comes to the future of our students, there are no boundaries that we as Alberton High limit them to because every opportunity we give to them is for their success,”said Mr Olivier. O’Sullivan also encouraged the youth to work hard and to strive for leadership throughout their lives. He shared the history of his journalism career and how that shaped him into the leader that he is now. Today, O’ Sullivan is a successful radio host and a well-known leader in the field of journalism. “In the past I did my journalism under the Legislation Security Act in the 1980s,” he said. “We were not allowed to report on violence at the time and in the process we went through a lot of political issues. There was a lot of uncertainty in South Africa. Today South Africa is going through a lot of turmoil, but we are a resilient society and nation. We can celebrate our victory in this nation,” said O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan also pointed out the opportunity journalists have today to report good news because they have access to all and any news - both hard news and soft news. He stated “The quality of journalism is disturbing and there is no level of interrogation. Junior journalism in the news rooms ... writing is not in context. Journalists have also stopped going out to find sources, because they are depending on social media platforms.” O’Sullivan also talked about the subject of racism and said that racism is hindering our nation from moving forward. “If we are ever going to move forward we need to address the issue of racism on a more regular basis,” says O’Sullivan. Alberton High plans to host these business brunches every year and encourage their students and community to strive for success and excellence. Mr Olivier said that they as Alberton High want to make this Corporate Brunch an annual event for the expansion of the School of Excellence. Alberton High School also wants to thank all their sponsors and the business partners who joined them: Premilla Hamid, Noel Sanders, Gerard Van Heerden, Shirley Smith and Lwazi from Makro, Lenita Camacho from Alberton City, Caron Hall from Applications Solutions (NPC), Lynne Dunn from Plumblink, George Kraft from Sanitech, Vanessa Pretorius and Haley Webber from Rawson, Andre Rautenbach and Menzi Buthelezi from Konnekta, Elzaan and David from Caxton, Mirriam and Sjoerd from Mardo’s, Gerrie Ferreira from Open Image Photography, Shane Stander and Garin from Tame TIMES, Brian Clack from Clack Air, Erand McLeod, Meis Booysen and Sara O’ Donnell from SA Olympic Health World, Candice Schultz and Eric Mbodi from Builders Warehouse, Cher Pedley and Hannes Hietbrink from DuPont, Paul Vincent from Dekro, Kurt Lubbers from Kalco Electrical Contractors, Jo Shuttelworth from Glenvista Country Club, Alex from Wink Promotions, Giles Geyer from Floorworx and Aubrey Ronne from Graphic Imprint, who joined them at their first corporate brunch of the year. ‘‘We at Alberton High look foward to an exciting year ahead, many new ventures and good relationships. A very special thank you to David O’Sullivan and Paulo Dias for making the day a memorable one for each and every one of us.’’

Eyewear Boutique VISITS CREATIVE ACADEMY As part of Creative Academy’s early intervention programme, The Eyewear Boutique conducted their annual eye screening tests on 25 February.
Jayden Trentelman spots the hidden object.
Buhle Nabe has her eyes checked.
Why not shake things up in your child’s lunchbox and take the lead from a few international flavours? There’s a whole world of lunchbox fillings to explore out there, packed with interesting, foreign flair and delicious combinations. Shake things up with these fabulous ideas: Italy Why not add some pizza rolls to your child’s lunchbox? Simply roll out bread dough (you can usually buy this ready-made from a supermarket) or use ready-made pizza bases. Spread over a thin layer of tomato pasta sauce or pesto, then sprinkle over grated mozzarella cheese and dried herbs. Roll up and bake until golden and oozing. For mini pizza rolls, try using classic white bread and flattening it with a rolling pin before adding the rest of the ingredients. Delicioso! Brazil The cuisine of Brazil is as varied as it is delicious, with African and American influences. A popular Brazilian street food that also works well for lunchboxes is elote, a boiled mielie coated with an array of delicious ingredients. Simply boil a mielie or sweetcorn until tender. Mix together mayo, grated cheese, butter, salt and sour cream, then spread over the mielie once it’s cooled. Wrap in cling film and pack as a yummy, healthy snack. Ukraine Take inspiration from a classic Ukrainian dish, blini, for a unique break-time snack. These wholesome pancakes are served with smoked salmon or berries and cream cheese. Mix together cream cheese with a little honey and a drop of vanilla, then spread on to a pancake or flapjack. Top with thinly sliced strawberries or mixed berries and
sandwich together (or roll up if you’re using pancakes). Wrap them tightly in clingwrap to make sure they stay fresh and soft until break time. Greece Tomatokeftedes, a crispy tomato fritter, is a seriously delicious local delicacy – and great to make in advance for school lunchboxes. Mix together chopped tomato, onion, parsley, crushed feta and half a teaspoon of baking powder with enough flour to form a firm dough. Roll into balls and refrigerate for half an hour, then fry in hot oil until crispy. When cooled, pack into a Ziploc bag, along with a small tub of mayo for dipping. Finland Riisipuuro, or rice pudding, is a traditional Finnish dish that’s super easy to make and, if packed in an airtight container, makes for a great lunchbox sweet that’s much healthier than chocolate. Simply cook a cup of rice in full-cream or low-fat milk until it has a soft and creamy consistency (adding milk when needed), then add a small knob of butter and sprinkle of cinnamon. Top with some fresh or stewed mixed berries. Once cooled, pack into a small container, along with a spoon for a nutritious and filling treat. Turkey Turkish cuisine is a delicious combination of Asian and Mediterranean foods. A common savoury treat, borek, is easy to make in advance for school lunchboxes. Mix together chopped boiled spinach with crumbled feta and some extra virgin olive oil, before spreading the mixture out on to a sheet of phyllo or puff pastry, and rolling it up. Cut into smaller rolls and bake until crisp and golden. (Blueribbon.co.za)

GRAAD 8 MAKING A DIFFERENCE VRL AANGEWYS
By Jéan De Witt
Hoërskool Alberton het verlede Maandag hul graad 8 VRL (Vereenigde Raad van Leerders) aangewys, aangesien die graad 8’s nou ware Allies is.
The parents, teachers and kids at Venture Montessori in Brackenhurst wanted to try to make a difference.
Everyone has felt the pinch caused by the drought across the country. The parents, teachers and kids at Venture Montessori in Brackenhurst wanted to try to make a difference to the people affected most severely
by the desperate situation. For just over a week, everyone in the small school community collected empty water bottles, or brought bottles already filled with water. The kids were very enthusiastic about making a difference and
in the end they did. In total the Venture Montessori family collected over 200 bottles of water, 15.5kg of rolled oats, 100kg of sugar, and more than 50 boxes of soup to help those in need, including the animals.

MRS VAN RENSBURG’S
LIVE IN
WALK TO SUCCESS WITH GARIN
Hope is something one needs to live with on a day-to-day basis because with hope one learns to endure through challenges and achieve the impossible. I received a reward from my editor the other day, for my hard work and dedication. It is not just my reward that empowers me to strive harder, but it is also my hope in my dreams and future that empowers me to strive. What is the thing that helps you get ahead in life? Is it your bank account every month or is it simply the hope for a better future or to reach all your dreams in a specific period of time? We all have a list of things we hope for; but, folks, God wants us to place our hope in Him. I hope and pray through Jesus that many people in Eden Park will seek God more, because God has a bright future for Eden Park.
MURDER IN PALM RIDGE
Opelweg Primary School are excited and happy to have their new teacher aboard, Mrs Van Rensburg, who has been with Opelweg Primary for almost 10 years. The tame TIMES had a sit-down with Mrs Van Rensburg to hear about her walk to success, which she said was not an easy one. “I went through a divorce which was a rough patch. Myself and my two children was taken in by my sister Mrs Oliphant, who is the Deputy Principal of Opelweg Primary. She always motivated me and helped me find my feet through my divorce. She took the step to get me involved with the school’s feeding scheme, where I was paid a little income. On a day-to-day basis I prepared food for the school learners and did this for six months,” said Mrs Van Rensburg. Later in the year Mrs Van Rensburg asked the principal, Mr John, if it was possible for her to take the next step and volunteer in the Grade R classes. He gave her permission, with wonderful results. “I later realised that teaching was my calling and told Mr John that I wanted to study to be a full-time teacher. ... Mr John gave me my own Grade R class the following year,” said Van Rensburg. Studying for a teaching diploma at the North West University took Van Rensburg some time due to financial battles, but in the process she continued teaching her Grade R class for seven years. “I always watched
children learning and growing on a day-to-day basis. That empowered me to be part of teaching them and preparing them for the future,” said Van Rensburg. This year she completed her diploma and Opelweg Primary appointed Mrs Van Rensburg “I LATER REALISED as a Grade 1 THAT TEACHING WAS MY teacher. “Now CALLING AND TOLD MR I can give my JOHN THAT I WANTED TO own children STUDY TO BE A FULL-TIME a better life,” she said, “and TEACHER.” I am thankful for that. I am also much more confident and strive for greatness. For people out there that might be in the situation that I have been in a few years back I just want to say that you must keep on praying and believe in God and in yourself because you can become something and someone. There is always light at the end of a dark tunnel.” The tame TIMES newspaper wishes this new teacher all the best as she educates pupils for the future.

Metro needs to take responsibilty because the longer this carries on, the health risk of continuous sewer spills can get increasingly serious,” said Nair. The contractors, she said, also do not clean the illegal dumping sites on a regular basis but only seem to operate on a once-off basis and then after a few months everything is back to normal. “Illegal dumping sites are really unacceptable and Metros have to now seriously start taking action because it has been here for so long, but I also encourage the Riemvasmaak community to keep the community clean and not litter,” said Nair. Councillor Nair took the tame TIMES to a drain that is not properly closed and pointed out the dangers of this. “Metro must take children’s safety into consideration and keep these drains closed permanently and to make sure that after contractors worked on it to close it

great success: ALBERTON BUSINESS
BOWLS LEAGUE
The Alberton Business Bowls League was once again a great success. Despite the fact that the teams weren’t able to play their last match on Wednesday last week due to the heavy rainfall, everyone had a fantastic time at the prize-giving and
supper afterwards. We would like to thank Alberton Bowling Club for organising this much enjoyed tournament. Thank you for the hospitality towards all the teams. The winning team, Gripple SA, received some awesome prizes.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE SPONSORS WHO MADE THIS LEAGUE HAPPEN:

IT’S TIME FOR
SANESA 2016 It is that time of year again. The excitement is due to the start of the 2016 Equestrian Schools League. All the riders are working very hard to prepare their horses and ponies for another exciting year of Equestrian Sport. How does it work? Each province is divided into regions. Gauteng has five regions: Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng, Joburg Metro, Tshwane and West. Each region runs four qualifiers within the first six months of the year, after which the top eight riders of each discipline and class qualify to go through to Gauteng Finals, which are normally held in August. If you have made it through to the finals, you will compete against the top riders in
your province. At finals, the top 12 riders of each discipline and class go through to the Nationals, which are held in October. At Nationals you will be competing against the best riders in the country. Through the Schools League, riders are able to compete for their individual schools, with points being accumulated. Some schools have become really competitive in this and win major category awards each year. SANESA Schools League provides the perfect opportunity for children to get acquainted with the sport. For more information, please visit: www.sanesa.co.za.
