JOB SHADOWING: MY WEEK AT TAME TIMES Letter by Carlyn Reddi

There’s a famous quote that says: “To look into the eyes of a wolf is to see your soul.” Having said that, I had the privilege of meeting man’s original best friend right here in the South – professional animal handlers and conservationists Nicolene Leibenberg and John Wagenaar of the Rietvlei Environmental and Wildlife Education Centre are raising two Canadian Timber Wolves at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. Both seven weeks old, the wolf brothers – Hunter and Phantom – were somewhat rescued from being mistreated by a former owner and are now being reared by the wildlife loving couple. As ambassadors, Hunter and Phantom will be available for the public to view. The Canadian Timber Wolf is the largest sub species of wolf. In the wild, they live and hunt in packs of up to 10 or 12 members. Apart from cuddling the cute duo, I was invited to attend a fun day in nature as part of Zak’s Enviro Club’s kids holiday programme at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. You can read the full story on page 8.

It all started with an assignment given to us by our enthusiastic life orientation teacher at Sparrows Private High School - a simple, nothing extraordinary job shadowing assignment. I called tame TIMES and spoke with Alberton Editor Monica and she agreed to have me job shadow at their offices for one week to learn the tricks and tips to being an amazing journalist. My first day was absolutely nerve-wracking. When I arrived at the offices of tame TIMES, I was very warmly welcomed. Before long I was introduced to everyone and shown around the office. The morning proved to be the busiest time of the day for the journalists, graphic designers, sales executives and editors present; however, as the day progressed, everything fell into a recognisable rhythm and people worked together very well. On my first day, I was asked to compile a list of questions for an interview with famous artist DJ Dino Bravo which my mentors (Monica and journalist Chante) had set up. On the second day, a new refrigerator was donated to Alberton Child Welfare and I was present for the entire interview with the director of the centre. A few pictures were taken and before long a new story unfolded - socks which had been hand knitted by a small charity group recently was also donated on the same day. It was a great experience and I will now feel more confident about my ability to conduct an interview, given the advice and guidance of my mentors. On the third day, we attended a scheduled press

conference at Tribes, a restaurant at Emperors Palace. The press conference was wonderful: we all had lunch and waited for other newspaper journalists to arrive. A Chesa Nyama representative was present to support a charity called Fighting for Angels. Sportsmen turned up to show their support and photos were taken. We left Emperors Palace and rushed to our next story. We arrived back at the office to meet DJ Dino Bravo for his interview. I was very nervous; however, because my mentors were happy with the research and questions I had done the day before, I was confident to conduct the interview. After the interview, my mentors congratulated me on a job well done and I felt very proud. On the fourth day, I participated in a conference in Brackenhurst for a charity called Jacobs Well. Discussions took place in an impressive boardroom. The fifth day… well it reminded me how great life could be when you’re willing to be more than what people perceive. My job shadowing was a complete success, and my aspiration for journalism only grows and I can’t wait to be able to do it, and do it with passion.

IF PRASA’S MTIMKULU HAS QUALIFICATIONS, HE COULD EASILY PROVE IT Letter by Manny de Freitas MP, DA Shadow Minister of Transport Rumours that Daniel Mtimkulu, Head of Engineering Services at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), does not have the qualifications he claims must be disproved if they are not true. I recently wrote to the Transport Committee Chairperson, Dikeledi Magadzi, to request that she summon Prasa and Mtimkulu to appear before the Committee to present the requisite qualifications and proof of the HR processes used to vet these qualifications. It is an easy thing to produce the proof of his qualifications, if he does in fact have them. Should he fail to do so, Mtimkulu must be immediately

suspended pending a full Parliamentary inquiry. Mtimkulu claims to have obtained an engineering degree from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) before studying in Germany to get his doctorate. As yet, Wits has not been able to find any record of Mtimkulu studying at the university. Mtimkulu was introduced as the designer of the Afro 4000 locomotives at a recent press conference held by Prasa after reports surfaced that R600-million worth of trains had been ordered that are allegedly unsuitable for the current South African train track infrastructure, and cannot fit under a number of bridges on South Africa’s tracks. It is vitally important for the effective running of our transport infrastructure, and, in this case, of our railroads, that those appointed in the public service have the requisite qualifications and expertise so that they are equipped to do the best job possible. The DA believes in a public service that is occupied and run by those with the skills and experience to do so.

STREET LIGHTS STILL BURNING Letter by Resident of Chelverton Avenue, Mondeor Street lights are still burning during the day. I refer to my letter sent to the Editor on 18 June 2015: Why are the street lights in parts of Mondeor burning during the day? Are we not supposed to save electricity? Come on City Power, can you not pull your weight and play the game? The lights in Chelverton Avenue, Mondeor are still burning after nearly a month! Is there really nobody out there that cares?

The Concentration Camp Cemetery and Great Trek Memorial site situated along Columbine Avenue in Suideroord is expected to receive a new lease on life. The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Arts, Culture and Heritage has undertaken to look into the refurbishment of some of the monuments located on the site, which belongs to the Johannesburg City Council. “The monument erected in 1988 to commemorate 150 years of the Great Trek shows severe signs of weathering and weed infestation, and some of the granite slabs are separating from the brickwork on which they are mounted,” explains René de Villiers, elected Ward Committee Member of Ward 54 who operates within the Infrastructure and Development portfolio. Living in Mondeor since 1969, de Villiers passes the site on a nearly daily basis and noticed first the weed infestation, and on closer examination the generally poor state of one of the monuments. “Representatives of the department recently met with concerned residents on the site and will be taking the project forward,” says Johan Human, an avid historian who lives but a stone’s throw from the site. In addition to the visible monuments, there is a small fenced and totally overgrown enclosure near the southern entrance of the site, which de Villiers and Human suspect may be a concrete

Remembering Mondeor

Mondeor has a fascinating history of features, people and places, and longtime resident René de Villiers wants to capture as much of this as possible. “What I have in mind is a pictorial record of the people, places and happenings of the early days of Mondeor. For example, many early residents will remember when the name of the suburb appeared in white painted rocks on the hillside above Ormonde Drive and Colworth Avenue. Who packed and painted these stones? Who remembers the Meredale Pleasure Resort where families had picnics under the trees? Has anyone got pictures of the open veld where Mondeor High stands today? Did anyone take photos of the school when it was being built? Then there is the old “log cabin” at the tennis courts. Surely there must be many photos around of tennis parties?” questions de Villiers. “Under the trees next to the tennis courts is a marble garden bench in memory of Jimmy Lee who used to drive the Greyhound Bus Line shuttle service in and out of town, and later between Forest Hills and Mondeor. This small memorial was erected by the Mondeor pioneers.

Who were they? Has anyone got photos of Uncle Charlies in the 1940s and 1950s? And of the un-tarred roads and of the old post office and Allied Building Society offices next to the old Zenex filling station? And of the very entertaining Otto Kahl Oompah Band? And of the shops before Dis-Chem appeared on the scene? Who remembers the ‘Republic of Mondeor’ bumper stickers? During times of heavy rains the Bloubosspruit used to break its banks near the present Shell filling station, making the road impassable. And don’t forget the Mondeor Meteors! Surely someone took photographs of these things and many more such happenings?” he adds. “I urge people to think back about amusing incidents and anecdotes, and to go looking in their family albums for old photographs. These will be scanned and returned immediately. If our generation does not compile such a record now, I fear that the history of Mondeor will be lost forever,” concludes de Villiers. If you have any contributions to make, contact de Villiers on 083 317 4339.

slab with some wagon wheel impressions in it. “Urban legend has it that the Kruger Millions are buried here,” says Human. “Following discussions with Ward 54 Cllr Sergio dos Santos and representatives of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, I ended up communicating with Mr Eric Itzkin of the Department of Arts, Culture and Heritage. Itzkin has been most helpful - the upshot of which is that we met with representatives of his department on the site, who are currently preparing a budget estimate of the financial implications to repair the monument in question, and to clear the ‘wagon wheel’ site,” says de Villiers. De Villiers, Human and Calvin Montgomery, founder of the Southern Suburbs Heritage Society, make up the nucleus of the current committee driving the restoration process. From 1899 to 1902, the Anglo Boer War ravaged South Africa, and during that time thousands of people, mostly women and children, died in concentration camps. One of the concentration camps was located in Turffontein where the Turffontein Racecourse is situated today. Many of them were buried at the site in Suideroord. “According to official records, 692 people were buried in the cemetery. Of these, some 470 graves are those of people who died in the Turffontein Concentration Camp. The vast majority of these were children under five years of age. Some 32 000 women and children died in concentration camps throughout the country during the war,” explains Human. In 1962, the cemetery was unveiled as a memorial site which was designed in seven coffin-shaped grave areas. “My grandmother was interned in one of the concentration camps in the Free State, where she lost two of her four children. My grandfather was a prisoner of war in the Anglo Boer War and was shipped off to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and was only repatriated at the end of the war in 1902,” explains de Villiers. Human’s grandmother was also sent to one of the concentration camps during the war. A rededication ceremony is planned for once the repairs have been completed. Interested persons, especially anyone who can shed light on what is contained in the small enclosure near the gate at the southern end of the cemetery, are invited to contact de Villiers: 083 317 4339, Human: 082 443 0992, or Montgomery: 073 249 2921.

Three found dead in Winchester Hills A domestic worker, her four-year-old son and her boyfriend were found dead on Monday 13 July at 03:30pm in Winchester Hills. According to Mondeor CPF, the domestic worker did not come in to work that day, which was very out of character for her. Upon investigation, the three bodies were found in her room at the back of the property. SAPS, ER24, Netcare and Mondeor CPF patrollers were on the scene. Murder-suicide is suspected, but the causes of the deaths will be confirmed by further investigation.

Prominent property owner “won’t pay”

Five dead in vehicle blaze Five people were killed at Nasrec and Rand Show Roads in Nasrec when a vehicle caught alight in the early hours of the morning on Friday 17 July. When ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on the scene they found the vehicle on its side lying in a bush. It is understood the driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle was on fire and Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the blaze. One person was found close by to the completely burnt-out car and four were found in the vehicle. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could have done for the victims. All of them were declared dead. The exact cause of the incident is unknown; however, authorities were on the scene for further investigations. DA says Booysens train collision a symptom of substandard rail maintenance

On Sunday 05 July at around 02:00am a white Pajero was driven into the wall of a local business premises situated at 69 Hythe Avenue in Mulbarton. The owner of the vehicle, a prominent property owner who lives and works in the area, allegedly fled the scene shortly after the incident occurred and is allegedly refusing to pay for the damages incurred to the property. According to DnD Tactical, one of their security personnel members drove past the scene and contacted the business’s client, SOS Security, to attend to the incident. DA Ward 23 Councillor Paul Smit and DA Ward 23 Vice Chair David Spykerman informed tame TIMES that either SAPS or JMPD were on the scene and that the vehicle was quickly towed away by First Road Emergency. “The driver responsible is not interested in paying for the damage done nor is willing

to engage in an amicable agreement with the owner of the business,” said Spykerman. “When the owner tried to make contact with the driver he was sworn at,” added Smit. Mike Yiannakis, the owner of the business, X-LAN Cabling, told tame TIMES that the driver has shown no remorse. “People can’t just get away with things such as this. What if it was a child?” he said. “I have tried calling the driver and I have visited the driver’s offices but the person in question is never available,” he added. “This is a hit-and-run situation and the driver refuses to pay for the damage. I have opened up a case with Mondeor SAPS and I am willing to go to court with this,” says Yiannakis. tame TIMES tried to make contact with the driver but was unable to obtain comment due to the driver’s unavailability.

Another Metrorail train collision that took place on Saturday 18 July around 06:00pm that left over 230 people injured, of which 100 being seriously injured, is of great concern, says Manny de Freitas MP, DA Shadow Minister of Transport and DA Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South. “Confidential inside sources inform me that substandard materials and weak internal procedures used to maintain our existing carriages and rail system are to blame for these all too frequent train wrecks. It is irresponsible of Metrorail to sideline experienced, qualified and skilled personal and to use nepotistic and corrupt suppliers who use substandard materials instead,” explains de Freitas. The DA was there on the scene to witness a community that came together to assist in what is one of the worst disasters to hit Johannesburg South in recent memory. De Freitas notes that he will be posing official questions to Minister Dipuo Peters via Parliamentary processes about Saturday’s train disaster.

21 July 2015 On Thursday 16 July kids enjoyed a day in the outdoors at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. As part of the Zak’s Enviro Club holiday programme, children between the ages of four and 12 hiked up the koppies to learn more about the history and heritage of the Tswana culture by restoring Tswana stone ruins that are situated on the farm. Apart from learning about our past, the kids were taught about nature and the importance of preserving it. “The only things we leave in the bush are our footprints and the only things we take from the bush are photographs,” said professional animal handler and conservationist John “Tigerman” Wagenaar of the Rietvlei Environmental and Wildlife Education Centre (REWEC). “We are trying to encourage the children to recycle through the holiday programme,” explained Adele Spear, founder of Zak’s Enviro Club. “We want to establish a nature conservation and heritage centre here at Rietvlei,” said professional animal handler and conservationist Nicolene Leibenberg of REWEC. After getting their hands dirty, the kids skewered marshmallows and toasted them on a big campfire in the middle of the ruins.

Preventing petrol pump blues Tips for motorists to save costs include: Car pool: If you are using your car to

commute, see if you can offer lifts to two or three colleagues and share the costs. Better still, if they own cars and you can take turns to drive, you’ll also save on maintenance.

Avoid congestion:

Admittedly, this may be easier said than done, but stopping and starting wastes fuel and wears out components such as clutches and brakes. If you’re using your car to commute, leave home a bit earlier. Alternatively, ask your employer if you can come in a bit later and stay in the office until the rush hour is over. If you’re using your vehicle to go shopping or run errands, wait until the roads are a bit quieter.

Drive sensibly:

Harsh acceleration and braking will not only add to the wear and tear on your car, but also wastes fuel. Accelerate gently and change up smoothly through the gears. Don’t wait too long to change up, though, as a labouring engine also wastes fuel. In areas where the traffic lights are properly synchronised, you

should find that you’ll be rewarded with green lights for sticking to the speed limit.

Streamline:

It may look cool to drive around with your window open and your surfboard or bicycle on the roof, but this will add drag, wasting fuel. Taking your roof racks off after your weekend activities and keeping your window up will pay dividends at the pump.

Get serviced:

Getting your car serviced regularly ensures that it runs optimally. Not only will this save you fuel, but preventative maintenance could also help you avoid a big bill when a worn component fails. Something as simple as a frayed fan belt could result in an overheated and ultimately seized engine.

Don’t be lazy: The convenience of cars mean that many of us jump in and start up even if we’re only going a short distance. If you’re just popping to the nearby shops to pick up something you’ve forgotten, think about walking or taking a bicycle. It’ll save you fuel and make you healthier.

In the longer term you may want to reconsider your choice of vehicle. If you’ve bought a big 4x4 for the occasional weekend in the bushveld, but are mainly using it to commute to work you might want to re-evaluate the benefits compared to the cost.

Pluto is turning into

THE PLANET OF YOUR

NIGHTMARES The New Horizons mission to Pluto has been a dream come true for scientists, who’ve waited years to get their first close-up glimpse of the distant dwarf planet. But some of the informal names they’re giving its distinctive features are straight out of nightmares. Since Pluto is named after the Roman god of the underworld, the names of its features are receiving monikers based on subterranean and suboceanic characters from fiction and mythology. One of the dark regions near Pluto’s south pole, initially called “The Whale” when first spotted from a more distant photo, has now been dubbed Cthulhu, one of the terrible “Great Old Ones” from the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. Cthulhu lurks under the sea in the sunken city of R’lyeh. Other features have been named for Mengp’o, the Buddhist goddess of forgetfulness and amnesia, and Balrog, a demon from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series. Two features, Vucub-Came and Hun-Came, are named after Mayan death gods. There’s also Krun, named after a Mandaean lord of the underworld, and Ala, the Ibo ruler of the underworld. Besides being colourful, the names serve a purpose for scientists as well. “We got tired of calling it the dark spot on

the left and the dark spot on the right,” Jeffrey M. Moore, the leader of the mission’s geology, geophysics and imaging team, told The New York Times. The names are considered informal, but may be presented to the International Astronomical Union (IAU), which is responsible for naming celestial objects, to become the official designations of the locations. IAU typically gives naming priority to those who have made the discovery. The names are taken from the winners of an online poll at www.ourpluto.org. Other high-ranking names that could soon find a home on Pluto or its moon, Charon, include Tartarus (the Greek pit of lost souls), Hades (the Greek name for Pluto) and Anubis (the jackal-headed Egyptian god, one of several associated with death and the underworld), as well as several names related to the works of Tolkien. While many of the unusual names have captured the collective imagination of earthlings on the internet, it’s the decision to honour the tentacled Cthulhu that has lit up social media. Gunman kills four Marines R1 COINS BRING FAMILY DOWN TO EARTH AT TENNESSEE NAVY FACILITY

Reality was no laughing matter for a family that decided to spend their monthly income using only R1 coins in July, when the cash was dramatically dumped on their living room floor. They are the One Rand Family, who are taking part in Sanlam’s Savings Month experiment - a year after the One Rand Man piqued the curiosity of South Africans

with a similar stunt. The family lives in an upmarket home bought late last year and, on the surface, life is great. But they suspect they are living beyond their means. According to City Press personal finance journalist Maya Fisher-French, the family’s suspicions aren’t far off. “The family has no contingency budget and is spending a huge amount on depreciating assets – for example, their cars,’’ FisherFrench said. With their online banking blocked, their bank, credit and store cards safely locked up, and their salaries lying in a massive heap of coins on the floor, it remains to be seen how dealing with one rand coins will impact the family’s attitude towards money. (www.fin24.com)

The gunman who shot and killed four Marines on Thursday during two attacks at military facilities in Chattanooga, Tenn., has been identified as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, a law enforcement source confirmed to Fox News. Abdulazeez, 24, was born in Kuwait, a U.S. official told Fox. It was not immediately clear if he was a U.S. or Kuwaiti citizen. He was reported to be from Hixson, Tenn., just across the Tennessee River from Chattanooga. The law enforcement source said preliminary reports indicate Abdulazeez, who also died, was not on the FBI’s radar leading up to Thursday’s attacks. A defense official told Fox he was killed by law enforcement officers and did not commit suicide. The U.S. National Counterterrorism Center said it has seen nothing so far to connect Abdulazeez to any terrorist organiation. But it noted that the Islamic

State group (ISIS) has been encouraging extremists to carry out attacks in the U.S. “We are treating this as an act of domestic terrorism,” said Bill Killian, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee. At a news conference late Thursday, FBI agent Ed Reinhold said there was “no indication at this point that anybody else was involved.” (www.foxnews.com)

THE LUXURY OF FREEDOM Redefining freedom, the all-new Toyota Fortuner makes its muchanticipated global debut. The new Fortuner eschews a purely utilitarian presence for cool new styling, an additional helping of luxury features and a refined drive, while still

Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Toyota South Africa Motors, the brief was simple: “Design a Fortuner that can compete in terms of style and aesthetics while staying true to its authentic SUV characteristics and genuine 4WD performance.” He adds, “I

THE ALL-NEW, BOLDER TOYOTA FORTUNER BOWS IN epitomising strength and genuine allterrain capability. Fortuner’s lineage is interesting: the SUV derivative of Hilux began life in 1998 with the introduction of the Hilux Sport Rider which was built in Thailand and initially sold only in selected southeast Asian countries. In 2005, however, this model went global (selling in 110 countries and produced in 11), started distancing itself stylistically from its Hilux stablemate and became known as Fortuner, earning admiration around the world for its impressive quality, durability, reliability and off-road ability. The Fortuner name evokes an image that is strong yet active, allowing it to cross borders easily to be accepted by people around the world. The style and quality are clearly apparent on the outside, and this assures you of the fine quality and detail of the lining on the inside, even though you may not be able to see it. In other words, there’s nowhere I can’t go and nothing I can’t do with my Fortuner, but I’m sure going to do it in style!” The completely redesigned Fortuner enhances driving confidence on every level and, in the process, sets a new standard for SUVs by excelling in four areas: design, utility and luxury, performance and safety. The all-new Fortuner launches in South Africa during the second quarter of 2016. Full local range and specs will be disclosed closer to launch-time.

SPRINGBOKS DEFEATED

The Springboks experienced a heart-breaking defeat in their game against Australia in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship played in Brisbane, Australia on Saturday 18 July. It looked like the Springboks had the game in the bag after 70 minutes of play, leading with 20 – 10 against the Wallabies. However, for the second successive year, the home team snatched the game during injury time, with Tevita Kuridrani (centre)

scoring the match’s winning try. The final score was 24 – 20. According to SuperSport, “The Springboks will travel back to South Africa in two groups and will only have a light flush-out session on Monday before hitting the training ground on Tuesday. The team to face New Zealand next weekend at Emirates Airline Park will be named on Wednesday.” (source: www.supersport.com)

The stakes were high in the third and final ODI Series between the Proteas and Bangladesh, with each team having won one ODI. At first it seemed as if the series would end in a draw due to heavy rain delays, but after three hours of waiting the skies cleared and play could continue with the overs being reduced to 40. The Protea wickets fell quickly with only Miller and Duminy managing to push up the Proteas’ total. Bangladesh was clearly ready for the challenge, hitting 21 fours in just over 26 overs to clinch a victory by 9 wickets.
