Pinboard

With only 31 days to go until Christmas, the festive season rush is now upon us. It’s the time for year-end functions, braais and get-togethers, as well as relaxing holidays and family time. I’m quite excited for December as this year I will really get the chance to unwind. I’m looking forward to relaxing at our holiday home on the South Coast in KwaZulu-Natal. Last week I had the pleasure of spending an evening of glitz and glamour with South Africa’s top celebrities and hospitality giants at Gold Reef City’s relaunch. Thank you, Tsogo Sun, for the superb evening! Read about Gold Reef City’s grand reveal on page three. Enjoying the GRC relaunch with the evening’s entertainment - I wasn’t sure where to look with this guy

FIREARM LICENCES Letter by Neville Peters

Hi Candace, I submitted my firearm licence application on 02 April and on 24 June I received an SMS stating that my competency certificate was receiving attention. On 01 September I received an SMS stating I would be notified when the licence would be ready for collection. On 05 September I duly went to Mondeor Police Station to collect the said licence and was told by the controller it had not arrived and they would phone me when it arrived. Well, it has been two months now and I still have not received the awaited call as yet! Something is wrong at the firearms control centre. We are told to renew within 90 days of expiry, yet it takes more than seven months to receive anything from them. I rest my case.

JOZI’S LATEST GOLD RUSH

Once a dusty mining village, the City of Johannesburg sprang to fame after the discovery of gold in 1886. Now Jozi has something new and shiny to brag about – the relaunched and refurbished Gold Reef City, the City of Gold’s prime leisure attraction. Characterised by a unique combination of nostalgia and thrilling entertainment, Gold Reef City has been relaunched following a multi-million rand refurbishment by Tsogo Sun. The glittering launch event took place on Thursday 19 November and was attended by Jozi’s most glamorous celebrities, key media, and leaders of the gaming and hospitality industry. The first phase of what will be a R630million investment by Tsogo Sun into the refurbishment and expansion of one of South Africa’s national tourist treasures has seen the property being elevated to a diverse, world-class entertainment destination. “This investment is in line with the group’s corporate strategy to invest in and expand its operations in South Africa. We are committed to ensuring that our properties stay relevant, fresh and competitive in the leisure market. Added to this, the selection of offerings at our properties are vitally important components in ensuring great experiences for all our guests,” says Tsogo Sun CEO Marcel von Aulock. City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Parks Tau says, “For many South Africans, Gold Reef City conjures up images of care-free days spent exploring the Victorian buildings

and gold mine that provided a perfect blend of educational and entertainment value. Today, Gold Reef City is, without doubt, the premier entertainment destination in southern Johannesburg. We applaud Tsogo Sun for its investment into ensuring that this attraction remains a significant contributor to the City of Johannesburg’s tourism industry, offering local and international visitors alike a truly unique experience.” Operations Director and Complex General Manager of Gold Reef City, Mike Page, says, “There is nowhere else in South Africa, if not the world, where one can experience a worldclass Theme Park, the historical significance of the Apartheid Museum, enjoy the thrill of a casino, an opulent theatre, and the familyfriendly entertainment value of movies, 10pin bowling, a games arcade and a diverse selection of restaurants.” Among the additions to the property are several new and upgraded restaurants, including the stylish Back o’ the Moon, which has undergone a total revamp and offers accessible upmarket dining. The property now also offers a Vigour & Verve restaurant, Spur Steak Ranch, Boston BBQ, Calisto’s Portuguese Restaurant, The Raj Indian Restaurant, Ocean Basket, Vida e Café and Col Cacchio Pizzeria, as well as a food court. Entertainment has also been taken up by several notches with the addition of a Magic Company twelve-lane bowling alley, not to mention cinemas. One of the most spectacular new additions to Gold Reef City is Tsogo Sun’s movie franchise, Movies@Gold

Reef City, featuring a cinema complex themed as a Victorian train station. Six theatres, offering a total of 1 048 seats, four of which have 3D c a p a b i l i t y, provide a variety of cinematic options for Gold Reef City visitors. The largest theatre is Platform 2, called Grand Central, which has 322 seats. Platform 3, which seats 84, boasts luxurious leather seats and a bar, making it an ideal venue for intimate corporate functions and exclusive VIP events. The new Salon Privé features an opulent gaming ambience with its own private entrances, playing areas, baccarat room, internet and cash desk facilities, lobby and VIP desk, as well as an exclusive lounge. A Kaya FM satellite studio is now also housed in Gold Reef City. “Gold Reef City has a long history of providing a unique combination of educational, historical and leisure attractions to the City of Johannesburg. This great heritage has been enhanced with the addition of the new facilities, offering visitors an even wider range of experiences than ever be-

THE DEATH OF COMMON SENSE Bill Barnes brings to our attention the plight of the loneliness of many of our pensioner population who have been dumped in places of retirement and boast no family support whatsoever to rely on. Very sad circumstances indeed and ones I can relate to. When my mother-in-law lived in Reuven Senior Complex, many of her friends were completely on their own and neglected by family. I know many young families have emigrated overseas and left loved ones behind but it seems incomprehensible that children and relatives, or even old friends, would fail to visit their own parents from time to time? What is the world coming to? It needs the residents of the complex to rally round and bring these lonely pensioners into a social network – a coffee club, bingo or games evenings and to find an interest that will draw out the recluses to take part in any activity they find interesting. Good luck with that - it won’t be easy. Bill, I’m glad you enjoyed ‘10 Pointers on How to Stay Young’; I have a similar article in the pipeline offering

further information and advice on the same subject. Look out for ‘Wisdom from the Golden Generation’ in a future edition. I thank you again for participating in our Pensioner Power pages and do hope this column continues to generate interest, not only on behalf of our many senior citizens but also among the many businesses of the South offering promotional incentives to assist our pensioner population. With Christmas and the festive season just around the corner - which only adds to the pressure on pensioner’s incomes - please continue with your special offers. From the feedback I receive, the discounts and incentives are greatly appreciated and the pensioner population will be only too happy to support your business. Till the next time. Pensioner Power.

This week I decided to share American columnist and author Lori Borgman’s famous tongue-incheek obituary for Common Sense which went viral after it was written in 1998. I’ve tweaked the essay here and there. I hope you enjoy it. Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird catches the worm; life isn’t always fair, and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned, but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a

classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their naughty children. His health declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student, but could not inform parents when a student fell pregnant and wanted an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as certain churches became businesses and criminals received better hospital treatment than their victims. Common Sense deteriorated further when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason. He is survived by his four stepbrothers I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame and I’m A Victim. Not many attended the funeral for Common Sense, because so few realised he was gone. If you still remember him, treasure his memory and pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

LOCALS RIDE FOR A PURPOSE

DADS AND DAUGHTERS: Glenvista residents Johnny De Nobrega (pictured left) and Quentin Jan participated in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge on Sunday 15 November. De Nobrega participated with his daughter Jessie (pictured left) while Jan’s daughters Carmen and Shaylin showed their dad support on the day

Candace King candace.king@tametimes.co.za Despite the sweltering heat and the 95km of road that had to be conquered on two wheels, Glenvista residents Quentin Jan and Johnny De Nobrega participated in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge on Sunday 15 November and finished with flying colours, representing their charities of choice all the way. Having ridden since October 2013, Jan took part in the 94.7 Cycle Challenge for the third time this year and has supported various charities without fail. “The first year I rode for the Sandton SPCA, and last year and this year I rode for the Reach for a Dream Foundation,” said Jan, who recently joined the Albion Wheelers Cycling Club. “I think the Reach for a Dream Foundation is a worthy cause to support as it gives children with terminally ill diseases an opportunity to fulfill their dreams. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the smile and happiness on a child’s face when their dream comes to pass,” noted Jan. With a starting time of 07:10am, Jan completed the race in three hours and 20 minutes, which he says he is very pleased with. “I managed to better my time against the previous two years,” he said. Jan added that there was a good atmosphere among the riders on the way, and gave the organisers an overall thumbs up. Along with his daughter Jessie, De Nobrega rode the challenge in support of the Special Wings Foundation, which raises funds

T

for the education and therapy of children with special needs whose parents are unable to afford the education that they deserve. “It all started three months ago when we challenged each other to do the 94.7 Cycle Challenge. We bought two bikes and like they say the rest is history,” says De Nobrega. Riding for the first time in a cycle challenge, the De Nobregas were met with challenges during the race but this did not deter them. “We were seeded in separate starting groups which meant I would start six minutes ahead of Jessie so we decided I would join her starting group. The start of the race was so exciting I can hardly describe it,” explained De Nobrega. “About 8km into the race I got a flat rear tyre. We stopped to change the tyre and lost a significant amount of time which now put us right at the back of the race. We were surprised to still see so many spectators on the side of the road waiting to cheer on the last of the riders,” he added. Once the dad-and-daughter duo were on the N1 freeway, they were psychologically challenged by the number of participants who were on the side of the highway with broken bikes or because they had just decided to stop due to the heat, the wind or the toughness of the race. “We struggled along to Joe Slovo off- ramp where we found the third hydration point

after 39km; this was another psychological challenge as the station was different to the last two - as this had a sweeping station, so we knew we had made it through the first cutoff point. I encourage every dad out there to do something crazy like this with their children – it was the best event I’ve ever participated in. To the sponsors and organisers, you did an excellent job!” With almost 33,000 people participating this year, the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge Ride for a Purpose campaign has proved to provide an incomparable platform for cyclists to create awareness about personal causes that are close to their hearts, and this year was no different.
