The

Pinboard

Visiting several schools in the South on Wednesday 13 January brought back fond memories of my first day of school. My school journey started at Mondeor Primary and I can vividly remember arriving at the school for my first day of Grade One in Mrs Thompson’s class. With my teary-eyed parents reluctant to leave, I can recall sit-

ting in my class giving my mom and dad the thumbs up as they peered through the classroom windows with their oh-so-90s video recorder. My Mondeor Primary school days were exciting and I remember all the fun school activities and events, including the Big Walk in the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, the Goofy Olympics, cake and candy sales, singing in the choir with Mrs Papendorf, and being in one of the school plays. Walking into my old Grade One classroom on Wednesday was

quite nostalgic. Not much has changed at Mondeor Primary except for the new faces. The green and yellow school colours are still bright and bold as ever and the proteas still greet you as you enter the school grounds. My memory of the school song is a bit rusty but what still sticks in my mind is the line: “Floreamus, we will flourish!” What do you remember from your school days? I’d love to hear your memories.

ASSAULT

Letter by Norma Rudham Hello Candace, best wishes for 2016. The following is an incident that happened to me during the holidays - as you know, my life is never dull. On Wednesday 23 December 2015 I drove down Seder Street and turned left into Limpopo Street in which my house is situated. An old navy blue car with a learner driver plate on it was parked in the left lane into which I was turning, thereby forcing me into the oncoming traffic lane, although there were no cars at that time. I could not see who was in the car and hooted once, drove past and

stopped at my house and got out of my car to open the gate, which is operated manually. The car I had passed followed me and stopped by my car and a man got out and started to verbally abuse me. He did not allow me an opportunity to speak. I went to his car window to try to speak to the female driver, hoping they would go away and, as the car had a learner driver plate on it, I assumed that the man was teaching her to drive. The man followed me to the car, grabbed my arm and accused me of being racial and jabbed his finger almost on to my nose. He then said this is not apartheid South Africa and bodily pushed me aside. I made an unfavourable comment about his behaviour and turned to walk away. He followed me, grabbed me by the arm and gave me a stinging slap across the face – I am 71 years old. The woman got out of the car and grabbed him saying, “Daddy no!” I then took the opportunity to enter

my premises and took his car registration number down. I then phoned 10111 and was given a reference number and told that someone from Mondeor Police Station would come to my house – no one did. I then went personally to Mondeor Police Station and was told that before a case could be opened I must submit a doctor’s report. I complied and was given a case number and told that Officer Masongweni was assigned to it. I have since been advised that the accused is no longer living at the premises corresponding to the car registration number so I do hope that the police manage to trace him. I would also like to thank Michelle Pelser for giving me advice and assistance in this matter, as well as Lieutenant Markovich of Mondeor Police Station. As the public are aware, we recently ran a campaign against the abuse of women and children and it is of great concern that

someone of such an apparently irrational, violent and unbalanced disposition should be driving around and maybe even living in this suburb. It was also rather disappointing to find out that many of these incidents are not referred to court so even if the individual concerned is located it does not seem that my chances of seeing him in court are good. However, if there are any further developments which may be of public interest I will forward same for publication. Candace, I hope you had a good holiday. As you see, mine went off very well.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Hi Norma, compliments of the season to you. Hearing assault stories such as yours is disturbing. This behaviour should not be tolerated in our community. Please do keep me posted on any developments in your case.

THE KLIPRIVIERSBERG NATURE RESERVE

LEFT: Having commenced in October 2015, Phase 2 of Project Eagle Rox involves the construction of a 1000m long boarded walkway within the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve RIGHT: In September 2015 development began at the Entrance Precinct of the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve which includes outdoor gym facilities, landscaping, and entrance gate construction In light of the recent construction in the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve (KNR), members of the community have raised concerns over the procedures and legal implications surrounding the developments, as well as the subsequent destruction of the reserve’s biodiversity. The KNR is a critical biodiversity area, as per the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD). In light of this, a current development at the reserve has damaged this irreplaceable vegetation beyond repair. This was done despite assurances that no developments were planned, says conservationist and grassland ecologist Morné Brits, who has been instrumental in the KNR for several years. “Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) are blithely forging ahead with a [development] ‘master plan’ [for the reserve] that has not been presented to the community and is in clear violation of Section 24 of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA). JCPZ’s activities are illegal and could be construed as criminal according to recent changes in NEMA,” notes Brits. “The KNR is a proclaimed nature reserve and any planned deliberate disturbance to its environment should be subject to the most rigorous oversight and approached with the utmost caution. The construction activities are taking place through primary climax grassland,” he adds. In 2005, JCPZ proposed a development strategy for the KNR which highlighted the implementation of new activities and facilities to be developed in the reserve. On 22 January 2007, former Gauteng MEC of the then Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, Khabisi Mosunkutu, granted certain exemptions regarding the development of the Entrance Precinct of the KNR. In an email letter sent to René de Villiers, a concerned resident who has endeavoured to obtain answers from JCPZ, Mosunkutu said that, “The activity will not lead to substantial detrimental impact on the environment, and [that] potential detrimental impacts resulting from this activity can be mitigated to acceptable levels.” “Exemption was granted with due process and compliance with relevant legislation and

regulations,” added Mosunkutu. As part of a legally mandated Public Participation Process (PPP) which commenced in November 2006, a public meeting was held on 30 January 2007 at which time a proposed master plan, dubbed the Nemai/NLA plan, was presented to a large meeting of the public. The proposed plan, angled around 10 points of development, made provision for, among other matters, a tented camp, scout camps, picnic areas, a panoramic view structure, an off-stream wetland area, a heritage precinct, and an environmental education centre. Members of the public raised their concerns at the meeting and were not in favour of the master plan, says de Villiers, who attended the meeting. “Objections from the floor were dictatorially brushed aside. In short, it was a tumultuous meeting of note. The public was given one single day to submit comments which were then reluctantly extended to a week,” notes de Villiers. “Many members of the public submitted comments on the draft minutes and then the entire issue went silent,” he adds. “The entire process had been thoroughly unprofessional and a major embarrassment, and when nothing further was heard of the matter, everyone who had attended the meeting concluded that cooler heads had prevailed at senior JCPZ management level, and that the proposed master plan had been quietly shelved,” explains de Villiers. In late 2015, development began at the Entrance Precinct of the reserve, which de Villiers and Brits say was given the green light without having undergone the correct legal procedures or having obtained the public’s input. “It stretches one’s credulity that the master plan [of 2005/7] has survived intact, but that all records of the process with which it was introduced, processed, propagated, and, crucially, the reasons why it was abandoned, have somehow miraculously ceased to exist,” wrote de Villiers in an email to JCPZ Managing Director, Bulumko Nelana. Brits and de Villiers unearthed information pertaining to JCPZ’s current implementation of a new master plan called Project Eagle Rox (PER), which includes several development

phases mentioned in the 2005/7 Nemai/NLA master plan as well as “two new and highly intrusive aspects namely a sports hub and an adventure centre (to include a mountain bike trail and bungi jumping) both of which were never part of any previous plans or presentations.” Development on Phase 1 of PER commenced in September 2015 at the Entrance Precinct and includes landscaping and entrance gate construction, among other things, says Brits. “It was however the subject of a successful NEMA exemption application in 2007. Depending on the exact nature of the application and the terms and conditions associated with granting of the exemption, the current construction activities could be legal, illegal or a combination of the above,” adds Brits. Brits notes that Phase 2 of PER involves the construction of a boarded walkway approximately 1000m long. The development of Phase 2 (within the KNR) commenced round about the first week in October 2015. The entire length of the boardwalk has been cleared to a width of approximately 1.5 metres and the vegetation on either side of the walk ploughed up, removed or filled over for several metres away from the pathway.

“According to Section 24 of NEMA, Phase 2 of PER is a listed activity and therefore requires development permission from GDARD. The development permission would be subject to the production of an EIA document or alternately a request for exemption from EIA regulations. JCPZ has not produced any of the requisite legal documents and all current construction activities within the KNR are therefore illegal and criminal according to NEMA,” explains Brits. Brits says that several other phases are included in PER, many of which boast farreaching detrimental environmental impacts and are considered to be listed activities under NEMA. Should these developments commence it would constitute, as for Phase 2 of PER, illegal and criminal activity. “There has been no formal consultation with community members and other stakeholders as far as the content or implementation of Project Eagle Rox are concerned.

REUVEN RESIDENTS CONSIDER THEMSELVES FORTUNATE

By Jerry Theys

CHRISTMAS LUNCH: Close to 200 people were treated at Reuven Seniors Complex Reflecting on the past, 2015 was a year to remember with fond memories and much appreciation by the residents of Reuven Seniors Complex. Various religious, welfare and business organisations, schools, societies, as well as Booysen SAPS, Southdale Post Office and a number of individuals, gave so much of their services to the retirement home.

Apart from sharing their talents, many bodies and individuals organised lunches, outings, and entertainment of all sorts and so much more, said Caroline Ngoasheng, Chairperson of the Reuven Committee. “On behalf of the residents and the committee, we wish to convey our innermost gratitude for the love and kindness that we

SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR DRUG POSSESSION

On Thursday 07 January a 42-yearold male suspect, who was visiting an inmate at the Johannesburg Prison, was arrested for possession of suspected drugs with a street value of roughly R3 500. The drugs were wrapped headache powder sachets and hidden inside a sugar packet. The suspect was detained at Mondeor SAPS.

received all year round. To all the local businesses, organisations, societies and individuals, God bless you and may 2016 be a prosperous and a successful year for you all,” said Ngoasheng. The most recent contribution came from one of the residents who appealed to the committee for help. Her three grandchildren desperately needed shoes and school bags. One phone call to Villa Pillay was all it took. He readily responded and made it possible for the children to go to school. Gale Pocket and her daughter distributed Christmas gift-packs to the residents, while Erica Baker and her daughter-in-law Jennifer also distributed books a n d clothing. Meals on Wheels, in conjunction with Busy Fingers, a group of women led by Aneesa Parak, arranged lunch for the residents.

Students from Mondeor High School and Waterstone College entertained the residents with sing-song, music, drinks and snacks. Ann Pynee organised a lunch and Sonto donated clothing. A lavish lunch for was arranged by Pick n Pay The Glen, Southdale, and Southgate. An impressive Christmas lunch was hosted by Sue Lubbe and Friends and many other volunteers who sacrificed their time on 24 December to entertain the residents with a Christmas lunch – close to 200 people were treated at the Reuven communal hall. The decoration and the lively atmosphere added to the joyous mood. Another memorable occasion was when Elder Romeo and many of the members of the Shekinah Glorious Faith Ministries from Booysens arrived with a truckload of groceries to be distributed to the residents. Hundreds of residents received the muchneeded grocery packs. This is the third time that groceries were distributed by the church to the residents at Reuven. The residents of Reuven Seniors Complex would like to thank all of those who made 2015 a year to remember.

STABBING ON VISTA DRIVE A man was stabbed by two suspects on Vista Drive near the scout hall in Glenvista at about 07:15pm on Monday 11 January. According to Mondeor Sector 1 CPF, the victim was walking from work when the suspects approached him, stabbed him several times and then fled. The CPF and Netcare 911 arrived on scene and attended to the victim. The victim was taken to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto and was reported to be stable.

The CPF notes that the area around the scout hall has been a location for street robberies over the past six months, with people walking past in the early hours of the morning or after dark to and from work being especially targetted. “Domestics are namely being targetted as they make their way to and from work. The CPF would like to caution the community about walking during the early hours of the morning and after dark during the evening,” says Mike Fontes, Mondeor Sector 1 CPF Chairman.

(Photo: CPF) ROCK THROWER ARRESTED A suspect was arrested during the afternoon of Wednesday 13 January for throwing rocks from the pedestrian bridge near the Kliprivier off-ramp on the N12 highway. Acting on information received from witnesses, Booysens and Mondeor Sector 1 CPF members responded to calls stating that the suspect, who was seen throwing a rock from the pedestrian bridge at a white MercedesBenz vehicle on the N12 motorway on Friday 08 (Photo: CPF)

January, was seen again on the bridge on Wednesday. The suspect was detained by CPF members and handed to Mondeor SAPS. Two witnesses that saw him throw the rocks at cars on Friday have positively identified the suspect and he was arrested by Mondeor SAPS. The CPF highlights that there has been a spate of incidents where vehicles have been damaged and persons injured by rocks thrown at cars in the vicinity. “We have come across the same suspect in previous rock throwing cases. He has often been seen in the vicinity of such incidences,” says Mike Fontes, Mondeor Sector 1 CPF Chairman. It is hoped detectives can link him to other incidents.

MONDEOR SAPS SUCCESSES

From Wednesday 06 January to Wednesday 13 January, Mondeor SAPS arrested 51 suspects for various offences. Twenty-six suspects were arrested for driving under the influence, six for shoplifting, one for attempted carjacking, and the rest of the suspects were arrested for committing crimes ranging from possession of drugs, fraud, assault grievous bodily harm, theft, robbery with a firearm and dealing in drugs. AK 47 RIFLES FOUND DURING ROADBLOCK

QUESTIONED: According to conservationist Morné Brits, the construction activities in the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve have not been authorised by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and are therefore not permitted in terms of the National Environmental Management Act The exact opposite is true - JCPZ has apparently deliberately been trying to hide the details of the project from community members,” says Brits. He adds, “Officials of JCPZ have on numerous occasions deliberately deceived members of the public, calling Phase 1 of PER a concept plan only, promising community involvement and consultation before project implementation and promising that no development will take place in the KNR.” Brits says that the construction activities have not been authorised by GDARD and are therefore not permitted in terms of NEMA. Brits laid a complaint last year with GDARD’s law enforcement arm, commonly known as the Green Scorpions, which resulted in the halting of all construction activities by JCPZ on Thursday 15 October 2015. “The KNR should not be seen as a drain on the City’s resources. It provides ecosystem services in the community. It is wrong to expect the KNR to generate funds to make it financially sustainable through inappropriate developments,” notes Brits. “I’m not opposed to appropriate developments in the

KNR, provided that these developments are done in an environmentally responsible way, that they are sustainable, that they are in line with conservation legislation and that the community is consulted before any decisions are reached,” Brits continues. “Although I’m pleased that JCPZ has agreed to work with the community to find solutions, I am, however, cynical and not sure that promises will be kept. I am dismayed that the 2007 exemption for the Entrance Precinct was granted and that construction had commenced prior to official authorisation,” says de Villiers. “JCPZ is currently in the process of reviewing the master plan of this iconic precinct to ensure that it is in line with the revised business strategy and updated legislative requirements,” said Bukelwa Njingolo, JCPZ Chief Operations Officer, in an email to de Villiers. It is believed that the JCPZ will, at some future date, embark on some form of PPP in relation to the master plan, stated Njingolo. At the time of going to press, JCPZ failed to provide comment.

On Tuesday 12 January a 35-year-old suspect was arrested for the possession of two AK 47 rifles. At 02:00pm on Tuesday members from Booysens Vispol were standing at a routine roadblock, busy searching vehicles. The roadblock commander pulled over a BMW and the members started to search the vehicle. The members searched a big white plastic bag in the boot, discovering two AK 47 rifles with ammunition. The suspect was then arrested, although he tried to offer the members R20 000 to release him. He is now facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well attempted bribery.

only did they overcome tremendous obstacles, either physically or mentally, but they showed perseverance and never gave up on their dreams,’’ the school said. There was a tie for the Principal’s Award between Llewellyn Alberts and Sfisile Mavuso. These learners excelled in terms of their all-round abilities in sport, culture and arts, as well as their interpersonal relationships, enthusiasm, positive attitude, perseverance and leadership. Trophies were awarded in the following categories: sport (athletics, soccer, swimming); cultural; speech therapy; and occupational therapy. Congratulations to all the learners - the school is very proud of you.

On my first day at Grace in 2013, I instantly fell in love with how unique the school was compared to other schools. We share a level of compassion that allows us to be more than just fellow learners, but sisters. Walking into Grace on the first day of 2016, I realised how different and unique our school really is. Seeing both new and familiar faces, the feeling of excitement began to arise. Eager parents seeing off their apprehensive Grade 8 pupils reminded me of my very first day of high school in 2012. Looking back to when I was in the Grade 8’s position, and now as a leader, I have come to realise how important it is to feel comfortable. The orientation at Grace Trinity is very different to the brutality of traditional initiation - instead of breaking down one’s self esteem, our goals as leaders is to build each learner up and create a Michelle Lee, Grace Trinity School bond of sisterhood. for Girls Head Girl 2016 As Head Girl of 2016, I strive to make

SHARIF AMIN

PATIENCE IS THE WAY OF SUCCESS!!

6 years of pain, disappointments and unhappiness in life. I didn’t know who was behind my suffering until when I saw SHARIF AMIN on TV from Pemba Island Zanzibar. I travelled all the way to Zanzibar to meet him and I explained to him what was happening in my life. And they performed a special prayer (Duah)for me I didn’t believe what I saw and he showed me the source of my suffering . My husband passed away fours years ago, all our wealth and properties were taken by my mother -in-law and her family who did black magic and cursed me that I will never get married again, and I will never give birth to any child and I was also fired from work but when Sharif Amin prayed for me all things started working out and he bathed me in crystal water and performed cleansing rituals to clear away the curse and I am now happily married with three kids and working . SHARIF AMIN specialise in traditional, spiritual, herbal healing and he also performs special prayers (duahs, ta’awiz ) for all denominations (religions) and races

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!

Compliments of the season to our senior citizens and pensioner readers and, may I add, the very best wishes for the new year. Remember that famous catch phrase from the movie Toy Story by the toy space ranger hero Buzz Lightyear? He was only a fictional cartoon character, after all, but nonetheless it is good advice to take into January and we might very well re-phrase it as: “Live happily into the remainder of 2016 and beyond,” and consider the following:

Your kids are becoming you, but your grandchildren are perfect Going out is good, but coming home is better You forget names but it’s okay because other people forgot they even knew you The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but really do care that you don’t care to do them anymore You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It’s called ‘pre-sleep’ You miss the days when everything worked with just an “ON” and “OFF” switch You tend to use more four-letter words such as “what?” and “when?”

Now that you can afford expensive jewellery, it’s not safe to wear it anywhere You notice everything they sell in clothing stores is now ‘sleeveless’

Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, yet the youngest you’ll ever be, so enjoy this day while it lasts and remember this: it is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold or silver.

What used to be freckles are now liver spots Everybody whispers You realise you’re never going be really good at anything – especially golf You have three sizes of clothes in your closet – two of which you will never wear again Being old is good for some things – old songs, old movies, and best of all, old friends

Hi Gary, thank you for responding to my letter regarding the one pound sterling coin. I appreciate your efforts to find the answers to my questions. Firstly, I asked for the meaning of the inscription on the side of the coin and also its value. I read with interest the history of why the coins were engraved – imagine carving off chips from the sides of the coins to make other coins or even jewellery. People everywhere will go to great lengths to make a bit of extra cash because carving off bits from the sides of a coin must be a strenuous exercise. It makes me think of the illegal miners here in Gauteng and the dangers they encounter. Your article on the old fogey is a good one it makes sense. I think I fall into that group. Keep up the good work.

PENSIONER POWER WITH PROBUS

ICE-BREAKER: Heads and Tails

AN ENJOYABLE DAY: The first PROBUS meeting The first PROBUS meeting for 2016 took place on Wednesday 13 January at the Reading Country Club in Alberton. PROBUS is an association of retired and semi-retired persons who join together in autonomous clubs throughout the world to stimulate thought, interest and participation in activities at a time of life when horizons are narrowing and opportunities to make new friends are limited. The word PROBUS is an abbreviation of the words PROfessional and BUSiness, but membership is not restricted to these two groups. The basic purpose of a PROBUS Club is to organise regular gatherings of persons who, in retirement, appreciate and value opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances and who enjoy similar interests.

The local PROBUS Club was fortunate to have a former firefighter, Deon Van Staden, take the time to speak to the members about fire safety. DEON GAVE SOME TIPS AROUND SAFETY AROUND YOUR RESIDENCE IN THE CASE OF FIRE: Always know where your keys are preferably next to your bed - so you are able to get out of the house.

If possible, have two different escape routes and an escape plan – and test it.

Leave your personal belongings and get out as quickly as possible.
