Hospitals are relaxing their visitation policies Hospitals across SA are relaxing their regulations. Netcare Netcare has relaxed its visitation policies and will now allow birthing partners to accompany expectant mothers to their antenatal visits. Jacques du Plessis, MD of Netcare’s Hospital division, told TimesLIVE the amended policies will be applicable to expectant parents who will be required to undergo strict Covid-19 screening processes and assessments. “Partners will also be required to adhere to strict infection prevention measures that have been put in place to ensure the safety of our patients and health-care workers.” Du Plessis said entry will be disallowed to fathers who display Covid-19 associated risks. The hospital will continue to allow partners during the births of babies as well as rooming in. Du Plessis said in instances where “infrastructure does not make rooming-in possible”, the partner can visit the newborn baby and
mother up to twice daily. General visits Du Plessis said the amended provisions do not extend to general visitations. “Restrictions applicable to the general visitation of patients in hospital, implemented at the start of lockdown, remain in place, with certain exceptions. Requests for visitation beyond the exceptions can be made to hospital management and will be accommodated as far as possible,” he said. In the paediatrics, nursery and neonatal intensive care unit (Nicu), one parent will be allowed at a time after having undergone strict Covid-19 risk assessments and digital screenings. Du Plessis said siblings and grandparents are not allowed into the unit. Mediclinic Dr Stefan Smuts, chief clinical officer of Mediclinic Southern Africa, told TimesLIVE that when SA was hit by the coronavirus, visitations of all patients were temporarily disallowed. He said with most provinces having
passed their peak, non-Covid-19 patients will now be able to see their loved ones. “These measures will allow non-Covid patients to indicate a designated visitor during their admission. The designated individual will have access to visit their relative during a set window period in the day,” he said. Covid-19 patients will continue to communicate with their loved ones virtually. Birthing partners On childbirth, Smuts said Mediclinic had not imposed any restrictions for birthing partners. He said partners were allowed entry if they tested negative for Covid-19 at the time of the child’s birth. “We have also retained the right for a partner to visit the mother and child each day, and where possible, rooming in has continued. While we have permitted partners access to visit once a day, this has not had a time limit attached. Boarding for the partner is still permitted where the facility is able to accommodate this option,” said Smuts.

Virgin Active Biding Time To Structure Safety Protocols President Cyril Ramaphosa said that gyms can open under the condition that they adhere to strict safety protocols that will be outlined in detail in coming days. According to the South African, Virgin Active has announced that it won’t be coming for you with a payment request just yet, and said that they aren’t quite ready to open their doors to their hundreds of thousands of customers. A Virgin Active spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday that the gym would take it’s time and prepare its safety protocols, The South African reported. “Virgin Active engaged Government early into the initial lockdown, making a submission on behalf of the broader fitness industry,” she said. “While we have been given the greenlight to re-open, we will make our specific protocol submissions before we announce a re-opening date. We will not be opening on Tuesday but will update our members accordingly when we have the date,” she said. She said that members will be able to extend their payment holiday for a further two months, giving those who are still feeling a little shy about heading back to the gym a little longer to consider their options. “Members will have the option to extend their membership freeze for an additional two months at no cost,” she said. https://www.virginactive.co.za/stay-active

You may want to check the expiry 118 Newborn Babies Abandoned date on that beer before you pay At Gauteng Public Hospitals Once bottled, high-alcohol spirits including whiskey and vodka are considered shelf-stable. Bottles may carry dates on their packaging, but from a consumer point of view, all that matters is an unbroken seal, Business Insider reported. That is less the case with beer. “I’d say you probably have at least a year after the best-before date to drink it, but personally I wouldn’t try it,” one liquor store owner says. “Beer absolutely goes off, and it can be pretty horrible.” Beer is complex, so complex that the way it changes in the bottle is not entirely understood. But “nonbiological instability” can cause haze, foaming, and changes in flavour. Due to the way oxygen, carbohydrates, proteins, and other elements interact, temperature and light are particularly important in how long beer will actually be good for, and the extent to which changes may spoil the experience. Interference by light is significantly reduced by brown and green glass bottles, or opaque cans. (Without UV blocking, beer can turn “skunky”, though anti-UV coatings mean the actual colour of the glass is no longer that important.) According to Business Insider, during lockdown, several liquor store operators said, they didn’t keep expensive fridges
running: every beer was basically sitting on a room-temperature shelf, even if it was technically locked in a fridge. What that means will differ from product to product, brand to brand, and even store to store. Complaints about beer that has gone off, experts say, are few and far between. But never in modern brewing history has so much stock sat for so long on so many shelves across South Africa, so a grand experiment is about to take place. And it will be up to buyers to watch out for trouble. Not all booze sellers even track expiry dates to being with, because they are so rarely an issue, liquor store owners told Business Insider. Those who do are about to face a rough ride, as consumers demand instant satisfaction while supply lines are still catching up. The level of incentive to make sure they don’t sell expired product? “Zero,” says one experienced liquor trader. By anecdotal counts, anything between 5% and 10% of the short-life booze products currently on liquor store shelves may be close to, or past official expiry dates. So, according to Business Insider you may want to check the expiry date on that case of beer.
The Gauteng Health Department on Thursday said in a statement it was concerned about the high number of abandoned babies at public hospitals after birth. This year alone, the department recorded 118 infants abandoned at various hospitals. The department said that the reasons for this ranged from teenage and unwanted pregnancies, lack of financial and emotional support systems, undocumented mothers, and no support from the fathers of the babies. Kwara Kekana said that the department was looking at ways to reduce the numbers. “Through networking with child protection organisations, hospital social workers are able to provide mothers at risk for
abandonment, with basic material support for both mother and child,” Kekana said. “This provides the mother with some immediate means to care for herself and the baby until she can make an informed decision. In instances where the mothers agree to care for the child, upon discharge, she is referred to a child protection organisation for further support and care options,” she added. Public Warned Against R35k Labour Scam
The Department of Employment and Labour wishes to reiterate its warning to the public to remain vigilant of a scam that continues unabated on social media promising them a pay out of between R33000.00 and R35000.00 The scammers have re-created a fake Department of Employment and Labour website using the old coat of arms/logo in which they ask members of the public to check if their names appear on the list of those that are entitled to withdraw these funds. The fake website claims that “workers who have worked between 1990 and 2020 have the right to get R35000.00 from Department of Labour.” The Department of Employment and Labour has not asked anyone to come forward to receive any of these benefits and will never do so in a manner that it is done through this website. All the benefits from the Department are received by those that have worked for them or are entitled to
receive them and are processed at its 125 offices that are spread across the country. When in doubt, members of the public are advised to visit the Department of Employment and Labour Provincial Offices or a nearest Labour Centre to seek information. Members of the public are also cautioned to refrain from sharing this information as they are assisting the scammers to reach out to many unsuspecting people; and are also advised to not share their personal information on these social media platforms or website as they are not authentic. The Department’s suite of services is offered free of charge to the public. To report any suspected criminal acts, members of the public are requested to inform the South African Police Service; report on the Department’s fraud hotline number: 08600 22 194 or email – fraud@ labour.gov.za and or visit the nearest office of the Department.

Is time running out for SA Rugby to return to the field?
The move to level two lockdown has been gratefully received but even better news for rugby in this country would be an okay from the government for contact training to resume. Time is running out for South African rugby to get back on the field of play, and on Thursday it will be two weeks since SA Rugby submitted its plans for return-to-contact/play to the government. This was after Sports Minister Mr Nathi Mthethwa on August 6 gazetted a return to competitive action subject to compliance with measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19. SA Rugby responded with its plans but to date, the green light has not come. And it needs to come this week so that the country’s players can get down to the serious business of getting battleready for game situations. As it stands, players across the country can train only in groups of five and the sternest contact they can take is tackle bags. Meanwhile, football in South Africa, also classified as a contact sport, is into its third week of play while rugby in the Northern Hemisphere resumed this weekend and, most relevant to South African rugby, New Zealand has
already finished its post-lockdown competition, the Aotearoa Cup, and in Australia, Super Rugby AU is well past the halfway mark. South Africa’s players will be feeling they are being left behind, and if they don’t get going soon there are serious concerns that the Springboks will not be competitive in the Rugby Championship that is scheduled for New Zealand in November. Springbok coach Jacque Nienaber has stated that he cannot take Springbok players to the Rugby Championship that have not had at least six Currie Cup games under the belt, and if that is to happen, the Currie Cup has to begin by mid-September. SA Rugby said on August 6 that their plan for the Currie Cup has an “early September” kick-off but with the delay in receiving the go-ahead for contact training, that date is likely to be pushed back —the Currie Cup coaches across the board feel that players need at least four weeks of contact training before they will be ready to play a match. Also, the later the Currie Cup kicks off, the less chance of there being a full-blown, double-round competition given that the final needs to take place a week before Christmas.
Cricket SA needs to treat black players fairly, says Thami Tsolekile’s mother Nontuthuzelo Tsolekile, the mother of former Proteas wicketkeeper Thami, is grateful that his side of the story is being heard. In a number of radio interviews over the last two weeks, the former Protea opened up about the 2015 domestic cricket match fixing scandal and highlighted instances of racism that have followed him throughout his career, from when he was just 12 years old, to when he was a member of the senior national cricket team. “I felt so relieved that the country is finally hearing Thami’s side of the story, and I’m glad that he’s coming out to tell the story for the whole country,” she said in a video chat with African News Agency. Four years ago, Tsolekile was handed a 12-year ban from all cricket for his role in the 2015 match fixing scandal that befell domestic cricket, and because of that, his relationship with his mother was affected. “The relationship between me and Thami, which was so strong, was

never the same. I wanted him to apologise, but he kept on saying, ‘I didn’t do anything wrong’, and I never believed him. But now that I can hear the story, I do believe him,” she said. Tsolekile’s mother added that she hoped her son’s allegations of racism in cricket served as a lesson to Cricket South Africa in how they treated players of different races. “This must be a lesson, that they treat each and every child, despite colour, race and language fairly and with respect and dignity,” she said.
