SA is getting a new airline and the founder wants you to name it
Kulula-founder Gidon Novick will launch a new airline later in 2020 and has invited South Africans to name the new carrier. The airline, which has drawn inspiration from Uber, is a partnership between Novick and Global Aviation, a leading operator of Airbus A320 aircraft. The airline’s first flight between Johannesburg and Cape
Town, the 12th busiest route in the world, is planned for December 2020, BusinessTech reported. “The pandemic has created a unique opportunity to start an airline that is not only dramatically more efficient but also inventive and creative by tapping into the unique talent that our country offers,” said Novick. He added founding team combines industry experience with
fresh thinkers from the technology and hospitality sectors. “Similar to the way Uber has transformed the point-to-point mobility, there is a huge opportunity for the airline industry to rethink its relationship with passengers and be more ‘customer obsessed’. “This can be achieved by bringing together industry experts, technology and a fresh perspective and strategic approaches from other sectors.” says Jonathan Ayache, an ex-Uber Africa executive who is also involved in the project. Novick has invited all South Africans ‘to put their creativity to the test’ and suggest a name for the new carrier. Without being too prescriptive the new team are looking for a name that is unique, aspirational, and cool. Ideally it should be easy to say and memorable. Entries can be posted on the website brandnewairline.co.za and the winner will be announced within the next two weeks. Novick said that the person who names the airline will win a year’s free travel pass.

UIF To Resume Covid-19 TERS Payments
It is all systems go for the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) to resume its eagerly awaited Covid-19 TERS Benefits payments – a campaign that has put hard cash in the hands of workers to shield them from the worst effects of lockdown as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. “We plan a payment run for all outstanding payments for April, May and June 2020 on Monday and Tuesday. After that, we will plan to run payments for 1 July to 15 August 2020 period from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 September 2020,” said Marsha Bronkhorst, Acting UIF Commissioner. “We are aware that
many workers around the country have been placed on a back foot as a result of the need to ensure that our systems stand up to scrutiny and we close the gaps identified by the Auditor General. While the inconvenience was greatly regretted, we are pleased that we have turned things around in what we believe is quick time and our systems are ready to make a difference in the lives of the workers again,” she added. This twoweek halt of payments came as the Fund was responding to observations from the Auditor General which highlighted lax controls. The report also guided the UIF on the steps to take to ensure that those who are deserving are recipients of the cash disbursements. As things stand, the Fund has scheduled multiple payment runs for the rest of this week to fast track the payments to beneficiaries. In the quest to further stress-test and mitigate the risks to its systems and process, the Fund immediately initiated discussions with government departments such as the Department of Home Affairs, South
African Social Security Agency, and the Department of Correctional Services amongst others. This was done to assist the Fund to synchronise its data to ensure that Covid-19 TERS Benefits payments are made to the right and authentic beneficiaries. While the Fund will start processing payments, unfortunately this applies to competent claims only. Incomplete claims or claims where there is information that is still outstanding from employers will not be automatically processed. “We still have claims that are yet to be processed in the system because of outstanding information. We urge employers to submit this information and we have made it easier for them to know what is still outstanding by developing the Discrepancy Tab in the system and they can also use FAQs on the DEL website,” said Bronkhorst. Ensuring that competent claims are settle expeditiously was also highlighted in the AG’s report and has been part of tough discussions between the Department of Employment and Labour as well as the NEDLAC social partners.
In announcing the new developments, the UIF would also like to take the opportunity to urge employers and employees who have not applied for the Covid-19 TERS Benefits to be mindful of the application closing dates for a period between April to September. The dates are set out as follows: COVID-19 TERS benefit applications for March 2020 to end May 2020 shall close on 25 September 2020, and no further applications for that period, shall be accepted beyond that date. COVID-19 TERS benefit applications for June 2020 shall close on 15 October 2020, and no further applications for that period, shall be accepted beyond that date. COVID-19 TERS benefit applications for July to 15 September 2020 shall close 30 October 2020, and no further applications for that period, shall be accepted beyond that date. The closing dates will not affect claims that have already been submitted, as they will be settled once all the outstanding information is finally submitted to the Fund.

The Heroes Of COVID-19 Acknowledged
What started as a small communitydriven initiative to show appreciation to the nursing staff at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital in the south of Johannesburg, unexpectedly took off when residents and businesses from various communities rallied behind the project. Clinical psychologist, Talita da Costa and psychiatrist, Dr Manesh Mohanlal of the Mental Wellness Centre at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital, who led the recent initiative, says: “Frontline healthcare workers, such as our colleagues at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital, have not shied away from the challenges COVID-19 presents and have given their all during this difficult time. “When Dr Mohanlal and I decided to embark on this special community project to give back to the healthcare workers who have been fighting a daily battle to keep our communities safe, we had no idea just how much support from the public we would receive,” says Talita Da Costa. Da Costa and Dr Mohanlal initially aimed to attract donations for food platters as a treat for frontline staff but were totally unprepared for the enthusiastic response they received from the community and businesses. “Residents within various communities, some of whom have had loved ones with COVID-19 admitted to hospital, as well as persons who had lost family members to the disease, came out in full force to support the project. We are also grateful for the support of businesses, including Roman’s Pizza, Osteria Rossa, Owl Day Care, Tiddly Winks Play School, Cremalat Cheese and Bem Bom,” adds Da Costa. While Da Costa and Dr Mohanlal initially sought to provide treats for around 140 nurses but the response from the community was so overwhelmingly positive that they secured enough platters to serve tasty snacks each and every person working at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital. “To see the effort that the community put into thanking the hospital staff served as a reminder to them that their hard work, dedication and commitment do not go unnoticed. We would like to thank all of the individuals and companies who so willingly contributed, the gesture was most appreciated and boosted the morale of the staff at the hospital,” concludes Nellie Koen, general manager for Netcare Mulbarton Hospital.
Crime Reporting And Alert App Launches In South Africa Knowledge is power in the effort to stay safe. Now you can stay informed on crime and safety issues in your neighbourhood through a locally developed app called CrimeSpotter. The citizens of a country feel the effects of crime the most, and should be given more direct participation in the reporting and discussion of crime. More needs to be done to intensify the fight against crime by using what is available today to improve communications and information gathering.
FIGHTING CRIME WITH TECHNOLOGY What is needed is a drive to use technology to widen the crime-fighting capabilities of South Africans and to unite against a common criminal enemy. CrimeSpotter is an easy to use crime reporting and alert app. Using the power of the community to gather and share data. Bringing communities closer together with technology and information that can be shared quickly and centrally. Developed independently by In-Detail Advertising, a Johannesburg based design agency who developed the free app to try to curb the rising crime in South Africa. NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH The aim of CrimeSpotter is to mobilise South Africans in crime prevention by becoming the eyes and ears of their community and actively reporting all crimes and providing any additional information possible on those crimes which have been reported by others. For example, most property crimes can be prevented by taking simple steps such as locking doors and removing valuables from plain view. If you know that these types of crimes are being reported in your neighbourhood, you can better prepare to protect your property. CrimeSpotter is ideal for Community
Policing Forums (CPFs), neighbourhood watches, townships, estates, road closures, security companies and active citizens. The CrimeSpotter app allows users to rapidly report crime incidents and suspicious activity. Crimes are mapped, and nearby users instantly notified. Providing incident awareness to all residents, security companies, CPF members and the police. Reporting incidents on CrimeSpotter does not replace an official police report and is done to alert others and to contribute valuable data to the central crime database. Data that can assist in the formation of crime prevention strategies of law enforcement and security companies. Crimes can be searched or browsed as pins on a map or in a timeline format. All crime information is public, as this is the guiding principle behind the project – to map and share up-to-date countrywide crime trends. TRENDING CRIME STATISTICS Many crimes go unreported as the only incentive to go to a police station and report a minor crime is for insurance purposes. As the yearly crime statistics rely on these official police reports, there is an inaccurate depiction of crime levels. This app aims to solve this and provide realtime t r e n d i n g crime statistics. Whatsapp groups are widely
03
used for sharing community information but are often segmented to roads or small private groups and are prone to local politics and abuse. CrimeSpotter simply connects all residents based on their location and is centred purely on safety and security. The alert radius can be set to anything between one and ten kilometres providing users with localised detail. While the app makes use of your current location, additional places may be added should you want to monitor other addresses pertinent to you. CrimeSpotter is a free app and allows for anonymous crime reporting. In order to protect privacy, no personal information is included in incidents mapped by this service.

SA’s Wade van Niekerk makes winning return to international races
It was a proud moment for South Africa on Tuesday night as our very own Wade van Niekerk took first place in the international race event that took place in Switzerland. Wade, who was running in lane four, made it to first place at 45.58s in the 400m race. The South African runner and previous world record breaker got in swiftly ahead of Netherland’s Joachem Dobberlands, who came in at 45.78s
in second place. Karel Zwelskski from Poland came in at the third spot at 46.03s on the clock. Wade’s first international win comes after failing to compete in an Italy race due to a harrowing positive coronavirus test. While the outcome of the test stopped him from attending the competition, his symptoms remained asymptomatic. Wade, who finally made his way back to international racing after three
years, did not manage to achieve his goal of winning in 43 seconds. In April this year, the racer had mentioned in an interview that reaching the finish line in 43 seconds was something he was determined to achieve. “I still believe I can go sub-43. I can go way better than what I have in 100m and 200m, that’s where my mind was before the injury and that’s where my mind is at for the future,” he said during the interview

Pitso reveals the secret behind his success at Sundowns Having the power when it comes to signing players, unlike his counterparts in the Premier Soccer League, has been the secret of Pitso Mosimane’s success at Mamelodi Sundowns. This is according to Mosimane, who has brought 11 titles to Sundowns in his eight years in charge of the team. Unlike his PSL counterparts, Mosimane has the final say on who comes and who leaves at Sundowns. “I just feel if results are on the coach, then he must fall on his sword. I just believe that you bring the players, train them and substitute [them],” said Mosimane, who won the treble this season. “If you don’t win [the club can say] we allowed you to do that and you did not do that. “But you can’t say results are on me but certain things are not on you. Then I will say but that player is not the one I bought. I did not want that one, I wanted this one. That’s why he is not scoring goals. So we can also have an excuse that this is not what I wanted. I just believe it is a principle. It is my opinion.” “Jingles” enjoys a full managerial role at Sundowns where he also owns the dressing room, a benefit that other coaches don’t enjoy. “I believe it is a principle that if you are responsible for results, if you are going to be fired for the results, get fired for the work that you do,” Mosimane said. “That’s my opinion, but I don’t want to say that clubs should do this and that. Yes, everybody has ambitions and there is a player that he likes. Some coaches have won with [clubs signing players for them], some not. The question is what are the chances? It is better I choose the players that I want. “(But) it is difficult because it is not your club and also, there are roles that are played. Technical directors, what are their roles? If he is here to buy players, then he is responsible for the results.”
